Lion Reinstallation problem

Hi.
I'm in the middle of factory resetting my MacBook Pro (Lion) and i've come across two major problems
By using Lion's OS X Recotery Disk Assistant (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433?viewlocale=en_US) i made a virtual cd on my external harddrive (Western Digital, 500gb (350gb free disk space)). So I could install the OS after cleaning the computer.
These are my two problems:
1. The installation reaches "Install OS X Lion" and asks for my Apple Id that it wants controlled by Apple. When its Ok'd the window goes back to "Install OS X Lion". The harddrive is ofcourse plugged in when doing this.
2. When im trying to use the harddrive on my other computer (Macbook Pro 2.3ghz Retina) im not able to se the content of the harddrive. Just the virtual cd.
I would aptriciate if anyone could help me with any of these problems.

I might have to setup a Genious Bar visit. I am experienceing problem #1 in your list. Unsatisfied with overheating/high CPU usage with Mountain Lion, I wiped the drive with gParted (including the recovery partition) and forced Internet Recovery Mode. Install went fine, but everytime I create an account for the machine, it takes me back to the "welcome screen." Interestingly, I know the account was created because I can no longer use the same username or full name again.

  • 10.6.8 and Lion wifi problem

    hello,
I am trying to use my mac for one week...... ;(
everything was fine until update to 10.6.8... wifi problem as many of you already know. tried to update to lion, same problem. Got back to 10.6 and then update to 10.6.8 using software update... then formatted again, fresh install 10.6 update to 10.6.8 using combo update, same problem.
tried to delete firewall file, turned off ipv6, changed security of my router from wpa2 to wpa, tried different channels, reset SMC and RAM, all the solutions we can research... all the same
now I am on 10.6.7 and seems i still has the problem happening....
hello apple, more than a month and no solution yet????
I've read somewhere a new procedure that consists in update to 10.6.8 and before restart do some procedures.... but I can't find it anymore, any help?
I guess that solution is the only one remaining I did not try yet.
    thanks and regards,

well, it's caused by software only, there is nothing wrong with airport hardware

  • LIGHTROOM 3.3 REINSTALLATION PROBLEM

Hi, LIGHTROOM 3.3 REINSTALLATION PROBLEM. I had an operating system problem with my pc. A friend took an image of my disc. I have the computer running again now but I dont have any of my Loghtroom edits. I was advised to get a .lrc (or something) file but that only had a copy of the very first backup that I did. I didn't backup using the Lightroom backup that pops up when closing te program. How can I retrieve all my edits, it amounts to many, many hundreds of hours work? I'd be very greatful of some help.

Thanks guys. I cant even find the disc image file so I am going to have to wait till me mate gets back from overseas to do any more.
I still have my image files but I am really worried about the edits. That is a heap of work. and I have sold heaps of images, I'm screwed if I get asked for a second copy, or anything for that matter.
My email address is [email protected] do you mind if I contact you directly? John is not due bak in OZ for a few weeks yet, then he's going to Japan for a couple of months.
    Cheers, David

since installing LION having problems getting photo images to upload? anyone else havie this problem? I did finally get a message that the format was wrong, but I have changed nothing on my camera. Only change was the installing of LION.

This is from the Kodak site which says there is no Lion compatible driver/software yet, but it is coming in late August:

Reinstalling OS X doesn't affect user data, provided nothing goes wrong. But it would be very unwise to assume that nothing will go wrong, especially if you're having (unspecified) system issues. You should try to back up all data before you reinstall or do anything else. There are ways to do that, even if you're unable to boot.
If your backups include only user files, you won't be able to access them in Setup Assistant.

  • Lion sleep problem

    Hi folks,
I read all messages on the Lion sleep problem, verified all relevant settings, and tried all that was recommended and applicable, but to no avail.  The display goes to sleep as set in energy saver but not the disk.  Does anyone has more to offer on this subject?  And apropos SleepPlease: I in principle refuse to download software that puts the machine to sleep when it's supposed to do so on it's own.  Any help is appreciated.
    Best
    Frank

I tried both of those suggestions an am still having the problem.  My settings are set to sleep the display and the monitor after 10 minutes.  Most times it wakes up fine, but it seems that since the update it does not wake up after being asleep for a considerable amount of time....  I have to do a hard reset to get it to come back up.

  • Mountain Lion WiFi Problems (recap)

Folks, wanted to recap this as I am finding the problem much more broad than my original post (here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19123146#19123146). Here's my setup:
    MacBook Air 13", Mid 2011
    Mountain Lion
Wifi Problems, cannot connect to open wi-fi and Sprint hot spot.
CAN connect to Time Capsule (at least I could before I started futzing with my setup while on the road)
here's what I've done so far:
    Reset SMC
    Zapped PRAM
    Reduced MTU to 1300
    Set hotspot to 802.11g only
    Set IPv6 to Local-link only
Set up a new user account, no connection there either
    Repair disk
    Repair disk permissions
Removed WiFi in networking control panel and re-add.
Remove the network from control panel AND remove keys from Keychain
What I have not done but will try later:
    Reinstall ML
    Disable WMM
    Observations:
ML seems to think there is a connection to the wi-fi, but it can never get an IP address
Using a static IP on the network doesn't help the problem
My hotspot never really registers the MBA as a connection

Tell you what worked for me .. finally.
Had two Apple technicians on the case - over the phone. Have to say, those guys are awesome! - with patience of saints! But to the point! As there was nothing obviously wrong with operating system, they promised to call me back the following day but suggested talking to my Internet Service Provider about the router (D-Link router). The ISP remoted to my iMac and logged into router site and changed channel selection from automatic to manual. He chose channel 13, and suddenly my MBA connected and has been connecting smoothly ever since. The reasons I had problems was that there was over 10 available wi-fi networks in my flat, some of which showed as having stronger signal than my own. The ISP guy told me this, increasingly, becomes and issue, especially in blocks of flats - the ether is  filled with wi-fi networks to the point of saturation. He also said, his choice of channel 13 was just a fluke and it might turn out I'd have to change it again.
So, although the problem is now solved, there still remains this one nagging question: Why did the wi-fi connectivity zonked right after Mountain Lion upgrade?

  • Do i have a virus, or is it just Mountain Lion teething problems?

Ever since i upgraded to Mountain Lion, it has impressed me, but also shocked me. It has some really useful features, and looks beautiful, but i cant help wondering if Apple is loosing it's touch, when it behaves like Windows Vista. The first problem was that it randomly kept restarting whilst in sleep, whick causes lots of problems. That has stopped now, but the are even worse problems. Web based application ofthen crash and are unresponsive, and it denies the existance of my Air port, which it is connected to, which keeps all the backups. Also, I recently noticed a Java DMG in Disk utility, but it wasn't in finder, when i looked, so i ejected it using disk utility. These are all tell tale signs of a virus, however, it also claims that the bootcamp partition doesn't exist, (yet i can still boot from it, and use windows), and also it told me that it couldn't eject Macintosh HD, because itunes was using it. Why would I ask my best computer to commit suicide? Also, when i connect my portable hard drive to it, it doesnt show up, but if i connect it in Windows or on another Mac, it works fine. So, it's either a virus, a reliability issue in Mountain Lion, Please help.

You don't have a "virus." That's the Windows way of thinking. You have a misconfigured system. What exactly happens when web-based applications crash?

  • New Mac Mini with Lion Video Problem With Dell E228WFP monitor

Just purchased a new mini Mac 2.3 with Lion pre installed.  I connected to my old Dell E228WFPI monitor via the Mini Display to VGA adapter.  The mini mac worked fine for an hour until I put it to sleep.  It would not rewake.  After rebute the gray screen and apple logo appear with clock, but after clock screen to black and monitor goes to power saver mode.  Took unit to apple store twice and could not resolve problem by changing resolution or other methiods.  Finally, we learned that the system works fine using Belkin HDMI to DVI cable.  This Dell Monitor had DVI connector.  Hope this helps...

How can a computer that's been turned off (and I mean completely OFF) get a network request? Only a sleeping computer should react to such a request. If you're sure you shut down (Apple Menu, Shut Down), then only an internal power supply or logic board problem should cause this. The only way it could be software is if Lion is not shutting down the computer but is instead putting it to sleep. Is it a new Mac Mini? If so, you should have it replaced or repaired.

  • Logic 9 + Mountain Lion = Performance Problems

    Hi,
After months of debating to upgrade to Mountain Lion, I did it (and regret it like iOS 6).
I'm just wondering if anyone gets the issue with Logic 9, where it works for around an hour no problems, then the CPU meter goes mental and causes glitching in the audio no matter what I/O buffer size I choose, or what sample rate my projects in, OR how many plugins/instruments I have open?
It's really starting to affect my clients as to solve the problem the OS needs a full reboot.
I am fully updated in Software Update and it worked perfectly until Mountain Lion.
    Hope there is a solution!
    Tim

Your question is too vague... More details are required...

  • Many Lion Server Problems

I think I have run into most of the Lion Server issues mentioned so far and perhaps a few self inflicted new ones.
    1) Upgrade from Snow Leopard worked except the migration failed.  Naturally I did not have a backup of the server configuration.
    2) Manual configuration has many problems related to the machine name.  I was using a linux box for DNS and a private LAN DNS name space.  My router is configured to forward many services to my OSX Server box.  Somehow I could not configure Lion Mail to operate.  The machine name, Internet name, local internet name, etc. are very confusing and different things happen depending upon using Server or Server Admin.  In Snow Leopard I could use a command line utility to set the return mail address to my MX record but under Lion I had to eliminate the private LAN name space, configure Lion to be the DNS before I could get e-mail to operate correctly from both IMAP and WEB mail.
    3) Once you attempt to use Open Directory the only way to correct a failed configuration is to re-install from scratch.
    4) If LDAP and the Password process fail to launch then they ping on/off every 10 seconds forever.  Only a re-install from scratch is the fix.  When this happens it appears that the permissions on the boot drive are hopelessly broken.  I do not mess with the permissions but now I am pondering a nightly permissions repair script.
    5) Using self signed certificates seems to cause many problems.  If I use them for the mail server everything is OK.  If I use them for Open Directory I cannot seem to get the other systems to connect.
    6) Under Snow Leopard I could see all users and their pictures on the remote Mac's.  I can't find this on Lion.
    7) Open Directory quit after a week of operation requiring a clean install from my backup.  I turned off Reserve Server Resources.  I hope this helps.
    8) Timeouts on Lion seem to be infinite.  Once one application falls into a timeout you eventually must power cycle the whole machine.
    9) The first time a user users mail I have to force kill it and restart before it performs the initial configuration.  This has happened 3 times so far.
    10) Manually editing user permissions from Finder within the Admin account (i.e. correcting my old user directories to match my new user ID's) is an exercise in futility.  Using the command line seems to be the only reliable way.
    11) I still cannot get profiles to work but I am afraid to try because the server seems to fragile.
    12) Carbon Copy Cloner is a required tool with Lion.  As soon as you have something working, make a fresh backup so you do not have to redownload everything.  I now make a nightly backup of the boot drive with CCC and cron.
    13) Some settings only take affect on a reboot, when you are making/testing changes this causes an interesting phase delay between making a change and observing an effect.
My system is a Mac Mini with 8GB and 24TB of RAID storage on Firewire.
It hosts home directories, e-mail, wiki's, etc for my wife & kids.  All data is on the Mini so the other macs at home are bare except for OS and Apps.
This upgrade has caused more trouble than all other system upgrades I have ever done.  It is making me think seriously about making another stab at LDAP/OD on Linux for my home server.

You might want to take a look at the much more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion on a "test" Mac to see if that works better for you. Oddly, 5.6 was released on the same day as AirPort Utility 6.0.
You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on a Mac (You cannot delete 6.0).

  • Mountain Lion download problems with Lion 10.7.5 (no VirusBarrier issue)

I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro. From the factory it came with Snow Leopard but has since been upgraded to Lion OS X 10.7.5. I do not have VirusBarrier, I am writing from a recently clean-installed Lion.
I have now been troubleshooting my Mac for several days. When I wrote first, I had an issue with Safari having been damaged and so I wasn't able to reinstall Lion - but after a certain extremely helpful community member I finally succeeded in installing Lion.
But the issues with the App Store still persist. All my Mountain Lion downloads fail, getting the error message "can't verify, might be corrupted" what many here have also been getting. However, most solutions were related to VirusBarrier (which I don't have), or /var/folders errors (Console does not show any var-related errors).
So if it's not a var-related issue, or related to firewalls or virus softwares (I have disabled the Firewall and I have no virus software installed), what could it be?
When the download and install of ML failed last time, Console showed the following messages:
    11/30/12 11:54:44.617 AM com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right 'system.install.app-store-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/in stalld' [235] for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app' [567]

...and a bit later, upon re-starting the download:

    Problem elimination:
    * I don't think this is a router-related issue: I have downloaded and installed other softwares outside App Store successfully
    * As said, I don't think this has anything to do with Firewall or Virus settings
    * Nor has this anything to do with /var/folders as far as I can tell
    What I've tried so far:
    * Repaired disk permissions several times
    * Rebooted
    * Restarted App Store
    * Following one advise found on the net, I deleted preflight.pfpkg just in case
    * All the time I have made sure my OS has the most recent Software Updates installed (most of them downloaded successfully, while with Safari and OS 10.7.5. I had to try several times before they were downloaded succesfully)
I just reinstalled my OS X Lion, only to use it to jump on to Mountain Lion - so I am pending my migration until ML is installed. I would like to fix this soon, since I'd like to get the migration done and my real work started. I would really appreciate your help.
I'm not very adept at using Console or Terminal to troubleshoot, so if someone could guide me through the problem identification, that would be great. Unless someone already knows exactly what's going wrong and can show me a working solution - that'd save my day!
    Thanks!

In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.
Would that work out for you?

  • Significant slowdown of Time Machine after upgrade to Lion; indexing problem

After upgrading to Lion over the weekend I notice a significant slowdown of Time Machine processing.  I assumed the first backup or two would take some time but it's been a couple of days.  The process always hangs up at the "Indexing backup" stage.  It takes a couple of hours to finish.
I found several threads relating to slowed down backups on Lion, most seem to hang at the "Preparing" stage (not the same symptom) but I did find some good diagnostic pointers.  I installed the widget to see what kind of messages were being produced and found a few dozen "Waiting for index to be ready (100)" messages at the end of the stream.  Further research - this is not a good thing :-)  It seems a couple of such messages can be ok, but this many usually indicates a problem.  I'm going to discount the possibility of a hardware failure because everything was perfectly fine up to the point I made the upgrade.  Plus the prepare and copy seem to proceed at the expected speed (I watched the most recent cycle just to be sure).

I further found the advice and instructions on how to run the disk utility on the sparsebundle.  I did a verify and repair, and the results came back that the drive appears to be ok (it did not say that it explicitly repaired anything).
    But the problem remains.
I use a 1TB Time Capsule with plenty of free capacity (only half full).  The TC and my MacBook are both hardwired into the home network, networking speed has never been an issue.
I'd sure hate to delete the backup file and start from scratch, there's over a year's worth of data there and I have, occassionally, wanted to go in there and pick up a downlevel or subsequently deleted file.
Any advice on other diagnostics or repair options to take?  Thanks!
    Paul

After posting I decided to keep trying to slog my way through the troubleshooting guide.  Some of the steps are beyond my understanding but I did follow the advice in #D2 to delete the .Spotlight-V100 file from the sparsebundle.  That action does seem to have done the trick, the backups are now completing in normal time.  I ran a couple just to be sure.  I've verified the backups with BackupLoupe and entered the Time Machine, all appears to be in order and as expected.  The only odd side effect is that the backup volume is no longer ejected after completion but that might just be an artifact of all my mounting/de-mounting and playing with Finder.  Anyway a very small price to pay for what looks to be a working system again.
Hopefully the good behavior will last through a few days and a few reboots :-)
