Lion restarting all applications without warning?

Hi there,
I'm experiencing some extrange behaviour in my Mac Pro (MacPro1,1) with Lion 10.7.2.
All of a sudden, all the active apps (and a couple other more) get restarted, without fully restarting. No warning at all.
I have disabled the 'Restart automatically if the computer freezes' option, but it is not like the computer freezes.
Has anybody experienced anything similar? Any ideas?
Roberto

I'm not sure I understand completely. Generally, to quit an application, you go to that application's name in the menu bar at the top of your screen, click on it, then scroll down to Quit (Application Name). Also, the universal Mac keyboard command to quit an application is Command + Q.
Now if you're talking about applications that are not responding, you can go down to your Dock, find that application's icon, right click on it, and then select Force Quit. Or, if you prefer, you can hold down Command + Option and then click ESC. This will bring up a Force Quit Applications window.
And if you're referring to certain application processes that are running and not responding, or running and you want to restart those processes, you'll have to launch the Activity Monitor. It's an application that resides in your Utilities folder. You can view all running processes with this application and force them to quit. However, if you don't know what you are doing, you can force quit certain processes which will automatically trigger a Logout or Restart, which is contrary to what you want to do. You can also, if you're not cautions, quit certain processes that will render your Finder inoperable until a Logout or Restart.
Hope this helps.

  • Classic app changed to epma application without warning

    Hi!
I have an application which was initially created as classic planning application. (version 931)
Today when I opened this application I noticed that dimension members were not editable any more, which led me to think that application has "evolved" to an epma application.
I do not remember having upgraded application (have just checked if it was upgradeable, even today it is upgradeable???).
When I browse application library this application is not visible anywhere there. So it seeems that it is not an epma application, but it does not have the classic application features either.
Can I somewhere check whether this application is currenty classic or epma?
Is it possible to copy epma application to classic application using copy app (just wild question...) I think i already know the answer, but has anybody tried?
    kind regards,

Have you eve used the EPMA file generator as I have seen it change the classic settings so it looks to be an EPMA application without warning.
You can revert it back go into the planning system tables.
First look in the HSPSYS_APPLICATION, note down the APP_ID for the planning app in question.
Next go into the table HSPSYS_PROPERTIES, look at column PROPERTY_NAME = EDIT_DIM_ENABLED for the ID you had in the step above, change the PROPERTY_VALUE from false to true.
    Restart Planning application service.
    Ok?
    Cheers

  • Give helpdesk ability to restart ALL SERVICES without making them local or domain administrators

I have a windows server 2012 environment using Active directory.  I need to give my helpdesk group the ability to stop, start or restart all services on the machines located within an OU, but I do not want to make them local admins because I don't want
them to be able to install software, create users etc.
I have found articles that allow you to grant this right on a PER SERVICE basis, but I am looking for a solution that allows them to restart any service...not just named services.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • FURIOUS!! - Automatic iPad Sync Deleted All Apps Without Warning

My iPad, 3rd Generation (6.0), is set to wirelessly sync with iTunes (10.7) in Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Today I opened iTunes and was greeted with the a message advising me that the iPad had new apps that were not yet synced back to iTunes. I was in a rush so I declined to sync the new apps. But as soon as I pressed the button, iTunes proceeded to delete all of my apps from the iPad, including all the data associated with those apps (including PDF files with annotations). I attempted to restore from an iTunes backup, but I got nothing back.
    My objections:
    (1) This is seriously unpredictable and harmful behavior in iTunes.
    (2) My iTunes backup utterly failed or was overwritten after I declined to transfer the apps
    (3) This is not a new problem: See http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=889859
    My feelings:
Now I have to spend hours recreating what I had on the iPad. I'm a patient man, and very computer savvy. But this has me wanting to throw my iPad through the window.

    To JimHdk:
Will do. I checked my support options before posting, but they are fairly limited after 90 days. What I really wanted -- which is apparently too much to expect -- is for someone from Apple to engage me on this without my having to pay for additional support. My product is less than 6 months old, but Apple offers  support only out to 90 days. The support tree ends in two places: (1) with my paying for  telephone support or (2) submit my question to the community. That seems like pretty sparse support for a premium product.
Apologies for winding up here, but this is where I was directed by Apple. My hope was that there would be Apple reps trolling these forums with their ear to the ground. But maybe that's too much to hope for.
    To Julian:
Sorry for shouting. Apple gave me no other place to go with my frustration.
What do I want fellow apple users to do? Be warned, I guess.
I now see the fine print under the notice which states:
"If you do not transfer these purchased items to your iTunes library, they wll be removed from the iPad."
It looks like that's exactly what happened. But that's very odd for two reasons:
    (1) I've had most of those apps for quite a while and they've been transferred back to iTunes in previous syncronizations.
    (2) Why should iTunes force delete apps that I've bought and paid for on my iTunes account, but for reasons of my own have chosen not to sync? It seems extreme. And it's a wide open window for this kind of unintended damage.

  • Backup restarts all over after  WARNING 20510

    Hi,
I'm experiencing this problem : while backup is performing we get this message :
WARNING<20510> - Backend Database - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - WARNING: Log log.000XXXXXXXXXX has been swiped out from under me! (retrying)
then backup starts all over the directory server.
I checked in previous posts and it says that this message comes one database is being written???
Has anyone an idea about this? How could I avoid the restart without taking the directory out of modification (if this is the problem)?
    thanks

The problem is that transaction logs roll over before backup is finished (Server is really slow)
Sun's answer that the restart is the normal behaviour and we shouldn't interrupt it, they offer an unspported Patch if needed.
A workarround is to hold writes on the server, back it up and accept writes again.

  • OS lion crashes all applications randomly.

Hi - i'm at my wits end regards this problem. my macbook pro 17' intel core 2 duo was recently updated to lion os (a clean install - no old file brought over e.t.c) with any operating system updates as they became availalbe.
Since upgrading i have had nothing but trouble from the computer. the problems range from 'black screen' to simple random crashes of applications. i have a error log that's massive (happens several time a day) - i'd paste them in here but it'd be a massive amount of text so i'v simply added one. so far fireworks, photoshop, the app store, disk utility, chrome, firefox, word, flash, i-tunes, safari, e.t.c have all crashed at times. the list is longer than my memory regards it.
i have been to the 'genius' bar where i was told that they dont know what's going on (and that i should go back to leopard!). i then searched online only to find so many examples of os lion users having similar problems that the responses are so vast i dont know which applies to my situation.
i have checked the activity monitor and that seems fine. i then ran disk utilities which shows a few repairs necessary but doesnt repair any of them.
i would appreciate anyone who knows how to read these reports to have a look and point me in the right direction as i am about to throw this thing in the bin.
The computer is super slow all the time even doing ridiculously simple tasks like opening a document or something like that.
    any clues?
    regards
    Mark

think i may be on the way to resolving this.
Currently we suspect RAM to be the culprit. even though i memory tested the RAM and it passed no problems. if i run the computer with only 1x4gb slotted then the computer runs fine. it's when i add a second 4gb that it start doing all the crazy things i described.

  • ITunes doesn't show even though open, then freezes all applications

To continue the title of the thread "iTunes doesn't show even though open, then freezes all applications and warns me of a failed raid 1 array on shutdown, even though it works fine"
Hi, I have this problem where I press the iTunes shortcut and nothing happens. I look a the processes and itunes.exe is running using its normal 34mb of ram (or something like that). After I've done this, if I try to load firefox or IE, they also freeze and won't load.
Then when I goto restart it warns me of iaamonitor notify app. After googling, I leanrt this is something to do with failing raid 1 arrays, but everything is fine.
I am now in vista on the same pc using dual boot, where iTunes is running fine, but since this problem has started I have tried deleteing the itunes stuff from application data in the documents and settings, deleting the my music folder, turning off all services and startup that isnt microsoft in msconfig and uninstalling and reinstalling itunes and quicktime. Nothing has worked.
Can anybody help me? I've read so many pages from google that this seems to of happened to a fair few people in the past and I don't want to have to resort to formatting my PC. Any help would be very appreciated.

Thank you! You guys are the best! It would have taken me awhile to figure that one out! These Support Discussions have helped me out over and over.

    CRASH REPORT
    Product:  Adobe Photoshop CC
    Application running on:
    Apple iMac 3.5GHz late 2013 / Mavericks 10.9.2
Application crashes without warning.  Symptom:  Drop down boxes go blank white  (I shot screen captures of blank drop down boxes) and application stops working, actions for appox. 10 minutes preceding crash are lost. Force Quit  required to quit unresponsive / frozen  application and then Restart of  Adobe Photoshop CC
Crash Frequency:  Three time in this work day, 5.6.14  Once a day sporadically (approximately 10 times) in past two weeks.
Other applications running at time of crashes:  Adobe Bridge - NOT effected.  Computer was on line with no browsers open.
Otherwise computer continued to operate normally.
I have been using Adobe Photoshop CC for approximately two months.

    Thanks, Chris,
I hope that this is the solution.
re:  "And a crash report without an actual crash report (a long, detailed text document available from the crash report dialog), is not all that useful" :
I did in deed submit a homemade crash report.
I would have submitted "an actual Crash Report "  and sooner, but:  When this event occurs. there are NO dialog boxes.  All frozen / blank.  No possibility of "actual crash report" !
    Thank you!

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

  • Mountain Lion Desktop crash? Randomly it returns me to the login screen and I have restart all my apps

So after install of Mountain Lion (never happened before) my desktop crashes and it returns me to the login screen.  After I login I have to restart all my apps.
One morning this happened 5+ times in under an hour.  So my productivity has gone down :-(
I work around this by only running three apps (finder, terminal & firefox), and then it sees to only happen 2-3 times a day...sigh.
The only other odd thing and have no idea if it is related is that firefox was showing some animated image from the olympics and when I had it on one screen it was fine, when I had the window on the other screen, the image was not the right image, it looked like it had reached into the screen buffer of other applications and was displaying that (e.g. where there was a scrolling flame for the right image, there was some scrolling upside down text from my terminal when I had it on the other screen where the flame was supposed to be).
An help on how to debug/solve would be helpful.

You're welcome. If you use Zoom often try the new show controller feature. It's below where you turned zoom off. Once you turn it on you can use it to turn Zoom on and off. Plus you can use zoom as a magnifying glass instead of full screen.

  • Explorer.exe (?) crashing without warning, closing all open programs

Hello! I recently got a windows 8.1 computer and have been using it for only a week, but I've been having issues with what I can only assume is explorer.exe.
The taskbar will randomly completely disappear, leaving only a blue empty space at the bottom of the screen (possibly getting rid of my desktop background as well), close every program I have open without warning aside from the one I'm using at the time
(generally google chrome) and doesn't seem to restart itself on its own. I have to ctrl+alt+del to get to the task manager to manually start explorer.exe again, which works without an issue aside from possible lost unsaved progress from the closed
programs. I don't get any pop up saying windows has encountered any errors, it just does it for maybe no reason.
I can't think of why it would be doing this because again, I've only been using it for a week. It doesn't happen often, it's done it maybe two or three times but it seems it might not be stopping any time soon. I checked the reliability monitor and
it doesn't seem to recognise this issue as anything, nothing shows up for this. Any help to resolve this would be much appreciated, or even just finding out why it's doing it. Thank you!

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.
The work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
    Press Win+"R" and input regedit
    Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

  • All apps close or quit without warning

    Hi All,
I am experiencing an issue in which all apps running close without warning.
    Scenario:
I'm working away with 5-6 open apps: Photoshop, Mail, Messages, Safari and Firefox etc.  Withourt warning the iMac cycles through and closes all apps and other things like the Wacom Tablet driver.  There are no unexpected quit messages.  Everything just closes within maybe a second or two as if I intentionally shut them down except all open docs just close - no warning.  The screen looks like it's flickering or more likely it's just cycling throug the apps as they close.  It happens so fast it's hard to tell.  This has happened three times in the last month.
The question is how do I diagnose?  I suspect that it might have to do with a USB or Thunderbolt hub that I'm running but how in the world could I tell?  I can't work without them and there's no way to work in safe mode for a month. Any thoughts?

  • After  i have upgraded to Lion OS, this computer has become the worst computer on this planet. Everything is so slow as if i am in 1990's, where you can click on something and take a coffee break. Constantly get errors on MS Outlook and all applications

After  i have upgraded to Lion OS, this computer has become the **** computer on this planet. Everything is so slow as if i am in 1990 where you can click on something and take a coffee break. Constantly get errors on MS Outlook and all applications are taking for ever to open up. If you guys can't fix it i am going to throw this out the window. Completely fed up with this. Have always loved apple but this is the worst experience i have with the MacBook Air and its not even 1.5yr old.

There are two ways to upgrade to Lion - one is to install Lion overtop of the existing Snow Leopard and the other is to erase the hard drive, install Lion, and then migrate your applications and user accounts. This second option takes a good deal longer than the first so the preferred method for most is the first method and in most cases it works fine. But not in all.
captfred has told you what I'd start out doing if it were my computer. There's a good chance that you can identify an application or plug-in that's causing the problem. Upgrading the involved item(s) can solve the problem. Of all the Lion upgrades I performed I had a couple that weren't completely successful even though I'd looked for programs and plug-ins that needed upgrading first. I missed a few but I found them after the fact and had happy computers.
There was one computer that still had problems. With this computer I reinstalled Lion right over the old version. (If you didn't keep a copy you'll need to download it first.) I still wasn't satisfied so with that computer I rebooted into the recovery partition (Command R after restarting) formatted the hard drive, installed Lion and then migrated. That did solve the problem.
