Lion's Text edit has no 'Save As'

There is only a 'Save a Version' on the menu, no Save As. I have no idea where these versions live, ut I need to save the text in a specific folder with a specific title and cannot do this. I guess theworkaround is to open it is Word (ugh) and save it there.  This defeat the whole beauty of Text Edit. Is there something I am not seeing? or doing?

I do not understand it, but this may be changing.  Here's a screen shot of a text document I just created with textedit.  When I went to "Save ..." this is what I got.  Has it changed?
Opening an existing textedit document, I got the "Save a version" menu.
Magic, I guess.

  • Text edit won't save documents

Several days ago i started having a problem i never had before in a zillion mac years.  I use Text Edit a lot, to take quick notes or copy and paste things.  I save the documents, give them a name, put them in a folder, or throw them away.  Several days ago, i had some trouble saving.  This being Mountain Lion OS 10.8.5, i have to hold down the option key to get Save As to come up in the File menu. i don't really need it because Save will ask if i want to Save As, but it took me a while to understand that and by then i was in the habit of the option key.. Anyway, a few days ago, when i would click Save As, the file menu button would light up but instead of just quickly opening a Save As window, there was a delay.  Then, the window opened and i saved. As time went by, sometimes the File menu button would light up and just sit there, no window would come, and then after maybe 10 seconds, the light would go off and no save option window came up. That is the problem i'm having now. I have a bunch of text edit documents on my desk top, Untitled, Untitled 2, Untitled 3, etc.  I can't save them.  I click on Command S, same thing happens, i try clicking the Close button (red button in upper left) but it just lights up for 5 or 10 seconds and goes off. It doesn't ask me if i want to save before closing, as it used to.
Has anyone heard of anything like this before?  Is there anything i can try to fix the problem and to be able to save my documents?   If i force quit, will there be a saved version of the documents anywhere?  I have a Time Capsule. i've never tried to retrieve anything from it.  What a hassle.  i'd appreciate some help if anyone has heard of this issue.  I'm able to save/save as in Preview and in Word.  As far as i know the problem is just in Text Edit.

Control- or right-click on the file in the Finder & choose "Compress" from the contextual menu that appears. The option is also available from the File menu in the Finder.

  • Upgraded to OS X Lion and now Pages has no "save as" option

I upgraded to OS X Lion, and my Pages has mysteriously removed the Save or Save As options.  It gives me "Save a Version" but doesn't allow me to edit the document name or decide where to save it.
    Help!

Which operating system are you running ?
Here are four screenshots which I took under 10.7.0.
CAUTION, in French, Save… is spelled Enregistrer…
This one was taken just after creating a new document from an in-the-box template.
    The Save… item is available.
This second one was taken after:
changing a word just below the date then duplicating the document.
As the duplicatewas never saved, the Save… item is available.
Thirs third one was taken just after replacing the string "titre" par "un titre" in the duplicate.
As this one was never saved before, the Save… item is available.
This 4th one was taken after saving once the duplicate then inserting "nouveau" between "un" and "titre".
As the doc was already saved once, the available menu item is no longer "Save As…" but "Save a Version".
I hope that this time you saw the Save… (Enregistrer…) item.

  • Pin Wheel, Save As-Text Edit

    On the MacPro/
This seems to be more evident on fresh restart vs a second attempt from the first.
From simple Text Edit document, and save as, he Pin Wheels for maybe 10 seconds like it can't find the Finder.
Doing the same on the older G4 Powerbook is instant.
A quick 'Disk Utility' reads OK.
From 'Activity Monitor' would the 'Sample Process' or 'Inspect' and save to file show existing issues?

  • Opening PHP File in Text Edit

I was opening a .php file in Lion using Text edit instead of my usual code editor. To my amazement it tried to open the file as a rtf file.
Then it told me the file was locked and then it automatically saved it as .rtf file and ended up corrupting the file and my php wasn't even reconizable.
To replace the file I grabed a backup and replaced the .php file and know never to open any .php files in text edit again.
The problem is that I was able edit php files in text edit in Snow Leopard without an corruption.
I do this type of editing very rarely. But I point this out to show the problems that this Lion has created with the automatic revisions.
That in addition to the lost of the Save As command leaves me somewhat hindered to use text edit as the basic editor of anything.

I'd love somehelp if anyone can tell me how to stop text edit from coverting files?

There really is no way to "address your issue" except to suggest you use TextWrangler instead, and also complain to Apple. You can not stop auto-save nor versioning in TextEdit (nor in Preview or Pages for that matter), nor get 'Save as...' back.
That said, TextEdit should not have done anything to a php file except open it as a plain text file. The "Locked" that appears in the title bar means in order to change anything in the file you have to mouse over the "Locked" in the title bar until you see a small undistinguished triangle, and then click on the now visible disclosure triangle that has appeared and either Unlock, to change that file, or choose Duplicate to get a copy to work on. Or you can simply attempt to make a change, and you will get a drop down sheet offering those two choices. If you unlock the file "Locked" will change to Edited and the disclosure triangle will then allow you to look at your current version and the original, and you can restore the original.
I assigned php files to TextEdit to open, and I also have "Ignore rich text commands in HTML files" checked in TE prefs, Open and Save section, and the default format is Plain Text.

  • How to specify 125% or 150% zoom in Text Edit?

I have just installed Mountain Lion (coming from Snow Leopard), and Text Edit has done away with the zoom selector in the bottom right corner of the document window. As far as I can tell, the only zoom options now are in the View menu, which provides a rather ham-handed 200% zoom. It's way too much, and precludes being able to view the entire page. So it appears that the only choices are too small or too large.
I'm probably missing something, but I can't find anything in the Help documentation. Is there are way to get 125% or 150% zoom, or has Apple killed that functionality entirely?
    Thanks!

Never mind...I figured out a very simple solution.
I still have a Snow Leopard boot volume on my primary drive, which means I still have a copy of the trusty Text Edit v1.6 that comes with Snow Leopard. Guess what...it works just fine in Mountain Lion.
So, I created a folder called "Text Edit 1.6" in my Mountain Lion Applications folder, moved a copy of Text Edit v1.6 into there from my Snow Leopard volume, and...ZAH! — I'm back to running a version of Text Edit that provides the very useful 125% and 150% zoom levels.

  • Older version of text edit won't open protected file

An older version of Text Edit has replaced the copy I had. It is not opening. I have a disk mounted password protected file that holds a Text Edit document. Clicking on the document isn't working.
I tried to find a download page for the current version of Text Edit, but I didn't see one on Apple's site. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I am trying not to go back to the Genius Bar, as a stray Text Edit icon from yesterday's session (another issue) started this mess!
    Thank you!

No need to open Textedit - just select it in Finder, then press Command I (or Finder - File menu - Get Info) : a new window should open with information about the item, including the version number.

  • Create a new page in Text Edit?

I know Text Edit has limited functionality but I havent been able to find any tutorials or basic information on Text Edit and eventually I may get Pages or Word for Mac, but for right now, I dont really need anything fancy so I'm hoping Text Edit will work.  Im thinking there's no reason you couldn't do a resume even on here - although I think Pages has pre-done layouts which would make it look a lot prettier.
Anyway, simple Text Edit question:  Is there just a way to create a new page - basically a page break like you did in Microsoft Word on a PC where  you would hit control+enter.  Im assuming there should be as that seems like a pretty basic function.
Also if anyone uses Text Edit regularly, can you tell me what are the basic things it can and cannot do...what do you need Pages (Or word for mac) for and for what will Text Edit suffice.  (I assume, for example, that Text Edit is not going to allow you to automatically do page numbers while Pages will)

  • Lion - no more "save as" in text edit

    Or am I blind?

Apparently it's one of the 'advances' in human interface studf.
Autosave is the default in Lion, hence the absence of a Save function after the initial doc creation and naming.
Apparenty some of the "old" Save As function's abilities are made available through the Export or Duplicate function in Lion.
    And then there's "versions"....
Personally, I like Save As, especially in a graphics app.

  • I started to learn HTML, and I'm using text edit and everything is going fine, when I save the file with a .html extension and open it with safari I only view the code and not the webpage that was supposed to be created.

I started to learn HTML, and I'm using text edit and everything is going fine, when I save the file with a .html extension and open it with safari I only view the code and not the webpage that was supposed to be created.

That is because you don't have a web server configured and running to serve the html page. In order to see the page in a browser you need to access it using a url similar to http://localhost/~yourUserName if you are serving the page from your user account.
Prior to Mountain Lion you could go into web sharing and turn on the web server. With Mountain Lion there is no option, other than using terminal, to turn on the web server. The web sharing menu item has been removed in Mountain Lion. Apache is still on your computer but it will take a little searching these forums or the Internet to find how to turn it on.
If you want a graphic user interface to turn on/off the Apache server you could download and install a server application like xampp, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html. I use this and it works well.

  • Safari Mountain Lion text editing glitch

Has anyone else seen problems with the latest Safari on the latest Mountain Lion where text that is being edited causes flashing? I found a YouTube video that demonstrates the problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYkqXkJXod4
This is very similar to what I'm seeing on my early-2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. It's especially bad in Google Docs, but it seems to happen when editing text in lots of web apps. The creator of the video suggested turning off the Energy Saver setting "Automatic graphics switching."  He said that fixes the problem but also drains the battery a lot faster.  And I can attest to that.  Just during the time I've been typing this message, my battery has gone from 58% to 54%.  But I haven't seen any of the text editing glitch.
I never saw this in Lion, so I'm guessing it's a new bug introduced in Mountain Lion, or Safari, or in one of the video drivers used by the early-2011 MBP.  So I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, and if Apple is already aware of it, and if anyone has a better workaround.
    Thanks,
    Todd.
ps. Battery is now at 51%.

This thread seems to be dealing in the area where I am having a problem. I can easily from Safari email the link to a page but if I choose in the mail side to have it as pdf it simply goes into mail and just sits there and keeps displaying the message loading in the mail message it opens.
If I do it from safari by going to the print menu and selecting from the PDF area of the print dialogue mail pdf it will open a mail message with the pdf showing as an attachment. Similar happens if I choose to send it as a web page. Does not seem to matter on either if I have it set to rich text or text in the mail same behaviour.
Any idea with what might be going on. thanks
Am using lated Mountain Lion 10.8.2

    Hai All,
I need to save the changes made to the text in my Text Edit Control, i know how to handle the Save command but my problem is the SAVE button doesn't appear in the Toolbar of the Text Editor. I have searched through the SDN but in all of those threads they already have the SAVE button and hence only the logic was discussed. But i need the SAVE button to appear in my Text Edit Control. When I click "Buy Now" in iPhoto's book I get the following message: "Your book appears to have default text that has not been edited. Printed books will not include this text. Do you want to continue?"
How do I proceed?  How do I identify which is "default text?"

What version of iPhoto are you using?
Go thru each page, check the layout to see if there's a text box included on the page and make sure there is text in that text box.  If not it may show the "holding" text like this:
If you don't want to change the page layout to one that only has photos and no text boxes just select that holding text and put a space in its place.
