Lion server in windows network

what are the steps if possible, to migrate a Windows Server 2003 network, into a mac mini with lion server, and terabytes of data storage connected?

Too vague of a question.  What does your server 2003 network do that needs to be migrated?  Just a file server or more than that?

  • Apple os x server in windows network?

Does the OS X server running with Mountain Lion work as a network server in a Windows environment?  In other words replace a Server 2008 domain controller.

No.  You can not replace a DC.  You can add a Mac server as a domain member and it can host services like file services.  But you can not make it function as a Windows Active Directory Domain Controller.
If you have all Macs, you can configure it as an Open Directory Master, and this will provide functionality on par with Active Directory.

  • I want to add a new Lion server to my network.

I am at the screen asking me if I I want to setup a new server or Transfer. Right now we have a 10.6 server that is doing the heavy lifting in our network.
My end goal is to use the new lion server to authenticate users, file sharing to osx and ios, vpn and maybe some server apps down the road.
My 10.6 server is now doing all of that. (minus the ios sharing and vpn)
What I like is to make the 10.6 server have some file sharing duties and well and a few other server apps, while the new Lion server authicates users, ect.
Will I be better off using the transfer wizard or just setting up new then configuring the two servers.
    Thanks!
If I have left out any important details please ask me.

You don't need to configure it manually. Just choose
Settings > Mail, Contact, Calendars > Add Account > Google
and enter your Gmail email and password.

  • Mountain Lion Server with Windows 8.1 Client communication problems

We have a Mountain Lions Server and several diffent Clients that need access to it.
Macs work fine  Linux clients work fine
Windows 8.1 only "sees" the router but not the Server or the Printer
the "Windows proofs" tell me its a Problem with the server
has anyone an Idea what I can do?
And pls don't tell me I should change all Windows clients to Mac. If I had so much money I would, but at the moment the existing systems need to stay.

I know this is a Mac Community
and no google doesn't solve all Problems

Well no, Google doesn't solve all problems, but its a great place to start.
As far as your issue goes, you need to provide more details before anyone could begin to guess, as we're not mind readers here.
What do you mean by "Windows only sees the router, not the server"?  What does "sees" mean in this context?
Who / what is Windows proofs?
How are you trying to access the server?  SMB file sharing?  If so, how are you trying to connect?  What happens when you try?  Do the users trying to authenticate to the server have an account on it and access to the necessary services?

  • Accessing Xserve with Lion Server from Windows 7 PC via VNC Viewer

    Hello everyone-
At work we have an Xserve running Lion Server that we are trying to access from a Windows PC runnig Windows 7. We have turned on Screen Sharing on the Xserve and we are using RealVNC's VNC Viewer client to access the Xserve.
Everything works OK except the Control key is not being passed through to the Xserve, so you can't to teh usual copy/paste commands etc.
I have checked on the Web but found nothing to resolve this problem. The settings in the RealVNC client are set to pass through special keys, but it is as if the VNC server on the Xserve isn't seeing them.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Lion Server VPN dual network cards

I have a XServe running Lion 10.7.3.  When I connect to the vpn I can only connect to the server and nothing else on the network. How can I set it up to see the whole network?

    Simple. Configure your VPN correctly.
Of course, you might have done that, but since you're so light on details there's no way for us to know.
From your description, though, it sounds like you haven't configured the server to hand out the right range of VPN networks. When a client connects, the VPN server sends it a list of networks/subnets to send over the VPN tunnel - e.g. "hi, client, send me all traffic for 10.1.2.0/24".
If you haven't set this then the the client doesn't know what traffic to send over the VPN vs. sending to the public internet. That's what I assume is going on here, but I could be wrong.
If you have got the routing correct the next issue would be DNS - have you set the right (internal) DNS server in the VPN server settings, so that the server knows to tell the clients what DNS server to use? If you haven't then the client will continue to use its normal DNS server which likely doesn't know anything about your internal network hostnames. Pinging a resource by IP address rather than hostname would be a simple check for this.
So check your VPN configuration and report back if that's not a solution. Either way it likely comes down to a configuration error on the server.

  • OS X Server on windows network

    Hello,
I have Mac Pro, running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8. This is school computer (university) so far we just bought server, but nobody is familiar with Macs (makes no sense) and we want to set it up to serve Apple devices that we have in school. Network we have in school is windows based on Windows Server 2003, my question is is it possible to setup this Mac Server to connect to Active directory and all Apple devices to connect to directory through this Mac instead of setting up each Apple device to join active directory? I know it is possible to connect to active directory, but is it possible to serve Apple devices with it? In addition to that not only active directory I would like to connect, I would also like to connect more services like file sharing, etc. If answer is yes, can you provide me with some link with basic tutorials how to setup network environment, or some kind of manual, I would really appreciate it.
    Ivan

    Is this possible?
    Who can tell?
Without some idea of what you intend to do with the server, no one can answer that.
Servers come in all shapes and sizes, and mean different things to different people.
For example, just out of the box Mac OS X can act as a directory server, a file server (4 different ways), a mail server, a web server, a DNS server, a DHCP server, a VPN server, a video/music streaming server, an instant-message server, and more. That's before you start to add third-party applications.
So, the question is what do you want to do with this?
There's certainly no issue plugging it into the network and turning it on, but beyond that you need to define your needs/expectations more to determine if it's worthwhile.

  • Mountain Lion server and windows 7 clients

    Hi guys!
I have a MacMini Server (with OS X 10.8.3 server). Several clients connect to the server everyday. And weird thing is happend. I cannot delete any folder when I am logged on with Windows 7 (it's ultimate one). Every users can do 'Read & Write' and I can delete the same folder with Mac OS X (With Same user account, even it's not admin)
The only condition that I can delete forders is.....
    1. The folders have to be made by the users who create.
    2. Without logging out (After log out and re-log in, I can't delete even I made the folder)
I don't know why it's happening. Is there any suggetions that I can try for this issue?
Thank you! Have a nice day!

  • Publishing iCal - which URL of lion server in private network???

I was looking in apple support and in the web for hours, I simply want to publish may calendar on my private server (NOT in the internet!) services are already running (profilemanager, iCal...). When I open iCal on my client (MacBook) and want to publish my calendar, I am asked for the base-URL of my private server, I tried it with "server.local", "macintosh.local", "192.168.1.xx" - always get the answer: "invalid URL"

I would suggest creating a directory in the Documents directory called something like ical. Do a "sudo chown www:www ical". Set the Web folder in Server Manager to /Library/WebServer/Documents/ical and you should be away. The URL for publising would then be http://aaa.bbb.ccc/ical
(I also turned off the performance cache.)
I've had a range of problems with the way virtual hosts work on 10.4. (It seems even the order of stuff inside each virtual host file in /etc/httpd/sites can screw things up - go figure) As you guess, permissions seem to be at the heart of it.
    Hope this helps

  • Creating a simpel network with Lion Server, and add Windows XP computers to it

We have a Mac Lion Server and 3 computers with Windows XP. Previously we had a Windows 2003 server with a domain name: "MYDOMAIN". When logging into Windows it logs into this domain.
I would like to replace this Windows 2003 server with my new Mac Lion server so, I build up a test setup. I connected the Mac Lion server (iMac) with my Windows XP pc with an ethernet cable. Then, I setup a DHCP, DNS and Open directory in the Server Admin. Added users. I configured the IP adres of the server to a static one by setting the IPv4 to "using DHCP with manual address".
Then I wanted to let my Windows XP server join the domain of the Lion Server, however I cannot let my Windows XP client connect to the domain of the Lion Server.
I read in the advanced administration that you can set up Windows XP for domain login. Where do I find the name of this domain? It should be stated in the server admin, open directory, settings, general tab, but the only thing I find here is: Role: Open Directory Master.
In Windows XP, when I explore in explorer the Microsoft-Windows Network I can see in "MYDOMAIN" the MacLion Server and my Windows XP pc. So sharing files is no problem.
However, I really want to create a new domain with my Lion Server and let the Windows XP pc's login to the new domain.
I hope anyone can help me.

    Thanks for the info.
I read some stuff about this indeed, so I was thinking, because we have a small network, could it be possible to share files on the server via a workgroup?
If we add the 3 Windows XP pc's to the same workgroup as the Lion Server, would there be a problem?
Then at startup of Windows XP, should we login to the pc instead of the domain? And where would I find the Lion server in Windows XP?

  • Linking a Lion server to AD on Windows server..............

Seen many forums about this, most of which states issues with trying to do this.
Basically we want to intergrate Lion server with Windows Active Directory so that the mac clients can login using their user names and passwords and gain access to their home folders on the AD.
Obviously the macs have multiple users, hence the reason for doing this.
We also want to be able to access extra raid storage which is connected to the Lion server for video and photography storage via share points.
All the macs are running Lion
    Is this feasible??

ok, thanks for the reply, let me try and shed more info on this
10 imacs running lion on a wired network
mac mini server running lion server on the same network
Raid box connected to mac mini via firewire
all the imacs need to be able to connect to the mac mini server in order to access the raid as a share point to store work ie photos and videos
at the same time, the imacs must have locked down desktops to stop students removing, downloading and using stuff they shouldn't
at the same time the imacs need to be able to access individual student share folders located on the windows server (active directory)
so there are 3 main challenges really.

  • Mountain Lion Server with Network User

I have a Mountain Lion Server with a network user. The whole system has been redone from Lion Server and on top of that I moved location, ISP, hardware and a few other things. The way I used the setup on Lion was to bind my MBP to the server and login from the MBP login window with the network account. If for whatever reason I wanted to look at the network account on the server, I could fast user swtich and everything that was open ie Safari, Mail, etc would be the same as it was on the MBP.
Now if I'm logged into the network user on the MBP and then go to the server, it logs in as if I've just booted. They share the home folder and any new files/folders created on one shows on the other. But if Mail is open on the MBP it won't be open on the server.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks for your reply.
I believe I got it to work, but,... How do you get the network account users to show up on the login window of the client computer? The login window shows the name of the client computer and the local accounts on the client computer. When I select Other in the login list I can login using a network account user id and it logs in. The network account user names do not show up on the login window

  • How do I connect a pc to mac mini lion server?

Have recently purchased a mac mini lion server and have had no problem connecting macs in a small office. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to connect the 2 PC's in our office...
I am not an IT person - doing this with complete ignorance!
    Any help much appreciated.
PS. I have enabled SMB on server, but still can't see the server on PC networks

    Hi frustrated,
    (I know what you mean...)
In any case, let me attempt to help you...
First of all, on the Lion Server machine (let's say this machine is named MyLionServer), open the Server app, click on File Sharing, and add the mount point you want to share.  Let's call this mount point Drobo (just in case you have a Drobo attached to your Lion Server), but it could be any folder or disk attached to your Lion Server machine or on your local network.  Edit the mount point share (highlight Drobo and click on pencil icon), and add the users (click + button and add the usernames) you wish to access the Drobo share, and how they access it (read only, read/write, etc.).  Also make sure to check the "Share with Windows clients (SMB)" button.  Click done and wait for the Server app to restart all of the file sharing servers.
Now for the Windows PC (I have just tested this myself on a PC running Windows XP Pro):
Click the "start" buttom, click "My Network Places".  In the My Network Places panel, click on the "Add a network place" button.  This brings up the "Add Network Place Wizard", highlight the "Choose another network location" and click "Next>".  In the Internet or network address box, add the following: "\\MyLionServer\Drobo" (yes, I know the slashes are backwards from what you normally use in the MacOS - also, the name Windows wants may have only the first character capitalized, as in "\\Mylionserver\Drobo"), then click the "Next>" botton, then click the "Finish" button.  The first time you perform this for the first share on your Lion Server, a window opens and asks for a username and password.  Enter one of the usernames and passwords that you gave read/write access to in the File Sharing panel for the Drobo mount point on your Lion Server.  This brings up a \\Mylionserver\Drobo window on your PC that is mounted to your Lion Server's Drobo.
    Hope this helps,
    Switon
P.S. As I said, I tried this out on my own PC as I was typing the instructions into this reply, and the above works for me.  But I did it on Windows XP Pro on a 6 year old PC laptop, and all machines and Windows OSes are different, so it will probably require you to do something slightly different from what I described above unless you just happen to be using Windows XP also.  Good luck.

  • Native iOS L2TP VPN not working on Lion Server

    Hi Folks,
I have a very strange issue concerning making VPN work on two iOS devices I have. I have recently setup Lion Server on a MacMini here in the office with L2TP VPN using a shared secrert phrase and a password authentication.
I have Lion running on an a MacBook Air (which I setup VPN using the provisioning profile "VPN.mobileprovision") and Snow Leopard running on an iMac. (VPN was set up manually). Both systems have been tested to work both inside and outsideof my internal network as I have tested with an air card.
I also have an iPhone running 4.3.4/4.3.5 that I setup by emailing the provisioning profile and and iPad 1 running iOS 5 beta 4 setup with the vpn provisioning profile. Neither the iPad nor iPhone seem to work at all either internally nor externally. In fact I never see any activity in the vpnd.log when I attempt to connect to with these devices. All I get is the standard "The L2TP-VPN server did not respond. Try reconnecting. ..."
Based on my success with the OSX Clients both inside and outside my local network I feel it is safe to say that I do not think the issue resides on the Lion Server nor the network/firewall configuration. I am running a Time Capsule with FW 7.5.2/7.4.2. There was no change in behavior with either version of the Time capsule firmware for the clients whether they were OSX or iOS. I must be clearly missing something here and I don't know what. Any help any of you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Issue is resolved. I used the initial random generated shared secret that was generated by Lion Server. The shared secret has special characters. IOS did not like the special characters. See iPhone Console Log below:

That is why I never saw any attempt to connect. The actual process would bomb out before attempting to make a connection to the server.
    The shared secret key was:

Looks like it was the " or the ? symbols.
Once I changed the shared secret key the issue went away and the iPhone and iPad could connect to vpn without issue.
