Lion server - is it right for me?

We are currently using a Mac Mini in our small office for file serviing. It is running 10.6 (NOT server). I have some software running on it that allows me to set up "mount points" for different user groups. I run the mini headless, and am able to "screen share" via the local network or through my MobileMe account using "back to my mac."
The setup works fairly well, but can be difficult to administrate.
I am considering the jump to Lion server. Looking past the marketing department descriptions I want to make sure it is the right choice for me. Here are some of the things I am doing and would like to do:
- I would like to continue sharing files. We have about 5 users. I would like to be able to set varying levels of access for each person. I can do this on an individual basis but would also like "workgroup" permissions/access.
- Right now we only have local access (except for my admin login). Ideally I would like to have the same file access (with restrictions and permissions) extended to sharing files via internet. Even better if I could limit which files or folders are available over the net for all except me.
-Looking beyond file sharing, I am interested in the WebDAV features discussed on the promo page. The short description of these features seems like I can basically run an iDisk on my mini. I can then let workers upload and download pages/keynote/number documents. We can also use this to coordinate calendars locally and across the internet. Plus it will sync with our iPads and iPhones. Am I understanding this correctly?
-Along the same lines, there is also iCal Server 3. The way I understand it, this can basically act as a replacement for the old MobileMe calendar, right? I see how calendars can be shared and understand how that works. But can these calendars also be administered, with permissions, from the server? In other words, can I (as admin) create calendars for Bob, Tom and Doris - let's say a personal and business calendar for each. Then set it up so that Doris can see Tom's business and personal calendars but only Bob's business calendar?
-Web server: I have played with the Apache server on previous non-server OS X versions. Can Lion server be easily set up to run as an INTERNAL web server? (Web pages viewable on the local network). If we wanted to make those web pages viewable outside the local network, is the process very difficult? We have a company to host our regular web and email services. I am only looking for some simple "company news" type information and maybe a small Filemaker database for a handful of employees.
We don't currently have a static IP, which I guess would be necessary for making some of these features accessible from outside the office. Do I need to get a static IP from my ISP, are there features in Lion Server that eliminate the need for that (e.g. back to my mac) or are there other options that provide a workaround for this?
Based on the above, is Lion Server what I need? Is there another product/application better suited for the above tasks?
Thanks in advance for any ideas, help or suggestions.

Do you think the monitor on the new Imac is good?
Yes, I use mine for both digital photography and working with video. The extra screen real estate is extremely handy.
If you need portability, I would keep the iBook also.

  • OSX LION SERVER on Mac Mini for a home media server?

Would a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion Server be a good alternative for a home multi media movie server?
    Has anyone done this?
If so please give advice or success stories vs. HP Home Media Smart Server (i added a link to the HP server)
    http://www.hp.com/canada/products/landing/mediasmart/ex.html
I would really rather use a Mac product but not sure what Apple offers and  if it will do the same or better than the HP Media Smart Server.
Again, any advice would be great.
    Cheers,

It would make a great server. Bonus over Apple TV for example is that you have access via both wired ethernet and wireless. Plus if you load tools from XBMC, Firecore and others you have a significant media server. Cost is right too.
Many people are doing this - google mac mini media server or other for more info.
Total downside to any windows based system - dealing with constant anti-virus, major security hassels, lack of true media integration and PITA to update, etc.
You should be aware that Lion Server is not ready for prime time - it stil has significant issues if you are migrating from SNL 10.6.8. If you buy an apple fresh Lion Server mac mini you should have no problems.
    You'll probably be pleased.

  • Is there a manual for Lion Server?

Where can I find detailed documentation for Lion Server?

Piggy-backing but the lack of official documentation amazes me and can be seen as a sign of immature product roll-out.  My similar question is below, but unless something has changed I will be looking at 3d party books (yes, in paper).
What is the best overall documentation and guide for using OS X Lion Server?  I am using a Mac Mini (2.3/8GB/500GB) and learning the server in preparation for a small office server.  I am just using it at home now but going to try multiple user config for iCal, document sharing, remote access, VPN server, print server, mail server, and back-up.  I am suprised not only by the presence of so much adverse comment but even more by the apparent lack of solid and readily available documentation from apple--maybe it is there and I have just missed it.  I downloaded from apple.com the .pdf
    Lion Server
    Upgrading and
    Migrating
For Mac OS X v10.7 Lion Server.
Not much there for getting started from scratch.  I viewed www.apple.com/macosx/server/  which is more marketing than help.  I also went to https://discussions.apple.com/community/servers_enterprise_software/mac_os_x_lio n_server and ended up back here.  Is there a good old fashioned paper book that I can sit in the sun with a cup of tea and start to both skim and study?

  • Mountain lion server won't take my password for install

I have never run a server version of apple software.  I am wanting web sharing to host a small website.  This option was removed from sharing preferences in mountain lion.
I purchased server to avoid the need to use the command line interface.  It was requiring a password and I don't use a password on my system and it wouldn't take a null.  I am finding a similar problem with attempting to install server on mountain lion.
When I run the mountain lion server installer it prompts for an administrator password.  I hit return as I set up the system without an administrator password.  This fails, but works with all other admin password requests for software installation.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    David Finell

I just decided to setup passwords.  I just wanted to avoid the pain.  It worked.  Now to figure out how to share folders over the web in server.

  • Out of office Relpy for apple Mail on Mountain Lion Server

We just recently switched our server from Lion to Mountain Lion and now we can not figure out how to create and launch an Out of Office Reply for Apple Mail on the new Mountain Lion Server.  I have searched the internet for an aswer and/or instructions on how to do this and haven't found any.
As anyone figured out how to create and launch an Out of Office Reply for Apple Mail on the new Mountain Lion Server?

Eustace - Thanks for taking a crack at it!  I saw this same post as well but it doesn't answer my question about how to create and launch an Out of Office Reply for Apple Mail on the new Mountain Lion Server?
I'm not looking to create an out of office rule on my computer but on our Mountain Lion Server like we used to be able to do on Lion Server.

  • LDAP and NFS mounts/setup OSX Lion iMac with Mac Mini Lion Server

    Hello all,
I have a local account on my iMac (Lion), and I also have a Mac Mini (Lion Server) and I want to use LDAP and NFS to mount the /Users directory, but am having trouble.
We have a comination of Linux (Ubuntu), Windows 7 and Macs on this network using LDAP and NFS, except the windows computers.
We have created users in workgroup management on the server, and we have it working on a few Macs already, but I wasnt there to see that process.
Is there a way to keep my local account separate, and still have NFS access to /Users on the server and LDAP for authentification?
    Thanks,
    -Matt

  • How do i configure my lion server to update my other workstations

I have a brand new Mac OS X Lion server. How do I go about setting up my Lion server to download updates for my other workstations (about 30). These workstations are mixed with Macbook Pros using 10.6 as well as some using 10.7, iMac's using 10.6 and 10.7 and Mac Pros using 10.7.
What do I need to do on the client side as well so that they can download from my OS X server. I have created a DNS entry for my OS X server in my DNS as well as a static IP.

How do I go about setting up my Lion server to download updates for my other workstations
Use Server Admin to turn on the Software Update Server. Give it a while to download all the updates. Done.
What do I need to do on the client side as well so that they can download from my OS X server
How do the clients connect to the server? Are they using central accounts via Open Directory? or are they local accounts on each machine.
If you're using Open Directory you can control the software update server via Workgroup Manager, otherwise you'll need to walk through each machine and update its software update configuration. Apple have a tech note that describes how to manually configure each client to use your server.

  • I downloaded OS X Lion Server using my apple developer account? Will it stay after my enrolment is over?

The title says it all. I downloaded OS X Lion Server using my apple developer account? Will it stay after my 1 year enrolment is over? I basicaly signed in and redeemed a code to download OS X Lion Server. It is now in my purchased list in the Mac App Store. But I got it by redeeming a code that I got through being an Apple Mac Developer. I wanted to know if I decided not to pay $99 next year to renew my enrolment, will I still be able to keep OS X Lion Server in my purchased list in the Mac App Store. When I click on More Apps by Apple in the Mac App Store, it takes me to the page with all their apps. OS X Lion Server says it is installed. But I want to know if it will still be in the purchased menu after the enrolment is finished and not renewed.

I am a new Mac Developer. I checked the page you gave me and I think it's more to do with topics about programming and using the developer tools and pre-release software. I don't think my question relates to any of the topics there. OS X Lion Server has already been released and is available for the public. I was planning on buying it. But before I did that I wanted to become a developer. So I enrolled in the Mac Developer program and I went to download OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2 when I realized that I could also download the already released OS X Lion Server which was available for $50. So instead of buying it from the Mac App Store, I just got the redemption code from the Mac Developer Center and downloaded it free of charge (I did pay the $99 to be a Mac Developer though). Now it has been added to the purchased list in the Mac App Store and when I click the More Apps by Apple button in the Mac App Store, it takes me to the page with all Apple apps. And now on that page it says that OS X Lion Server has been installed. I am just wandering if once my enrollment is over next year April, and I decide not to renew my enrolment, will I still be able to have the OS X Lion Server in my list of purchased apps and still be able to re-download it? Sorry if this is too long, but I am trying to be as clear as possible. Sometimes when I ask questions, I wait a whole day and go back there, only to find out that they didn't understand what I meant. Thank you .

  • Need help setting up Lion Server

Here's my story... I got a 2006 Xserve for free. It has 2 dual core 2.66 Xeons, 4 GB of RAM, and 2 300 GB SAS drives that I have turned into a RAID 1 array. I've installed OS X Lion Server on it and all is running okay. My OS X Server knowledge is slim to none. I do a little work with it at my job, but our main servers are Windows. I'd like to set it up as a DHCP and Open Directory server at home, just for fun. My home network consists of this Xserve, my 27" iMac, a MacBook Pro, an Xbox, a Samsung TV, a couple of iPads and our iPhones.
I go from my Charter modem, to my AirPort Extreme, and then broadcast wirelessly to my other devices, and have my Xserve plugged into port 1.
To get DHCP working, do I need to go from my modem to my Xserve, and then from my Xserve to the WAN port on my AirPort Extreme? Or do I just need to configure something?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

If you have just Lion Server installed, go here for the rest of the tools:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1528
This will include Server Admin.  It will allow you to define DHCP, DNS, and other services not available in Lion's Server.app.
You networking knowledge will apply here.  It sounds like you want to use the Xserve as the NAT gateway.  This is possible, but you will need Server Admin to make it easier.

  • Lion Server - OpenDirectory migration woes

    Hi,
We had a solid Snow Leopard Server but we needed to upgrade to Lion Server.  We waited for 10.7.3 and went for it as per the Apple upgrade guide.  O....M....G.  What a mess.
OpenDirectory was trashed and pretty much discarded by Lion and any attempt to restore from a backup taken before the upgrade failed miserably.  Tech support from Apple was woefully inadequate.  The priceless "Yes, we have had a few reports of that problem" didn't fix the fault and neither did the "It will be easier for you to restore from a time machine backup but that doesn't back everything up".  So that was a waste of an hour.
Fortunately, we had a Snow Leopard Server running a replica of the directory and I promoted that to master which allowed users to log in.  I've also imported the users into Lion's directory but that only seems to create a link to the OD master on the SLS server.
Has anyone else come across this problem and how did you get around it?  Doing an archive of the SLS OD Master and then restoring that on the Lion OD Master doesn't seem to work at all.
Very reluctant to upgrade the SLS OD Master now following the pain that has ensued from the last upgrade.
    Any input very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Solved my own question here.
THE only way around this was to Export users via WM from the SLS OD Master and then Import users via WM into the LS OD Master.  This process lost all user passwords so all accounts needed a password adding through WM and then all users were forced to do a password reset through the Default Website "Change Password" link or by forcing them to change their password on next logon in WM.
All sorted here, though.  Not ideal and a lot of pain for the user base but all working fine now.

  • Lion server, basic questions

    HI,
    I have three questions :
    1.  If I install Lion server on my desktop iMac, can I exchange files or document from my Macbook Por from my school.  Before I was ablle to do it in ftp, now how is it work ?
    2.  Is my Time Capsule is sufficient for routeur ? I mean, do I have to put my Time Capsule in bridge position and get a linksys routeur for example for controll the passage to my iMac ?
    3.  I my network, I have a G4 on OSX 10.4, will it be yet possible to acess to my iMac in server mode for it, and will it be posible to access to the G4 from my iMac on Lion server ?
    Thanks,
    Claude

Thanks for quick response.   Indeed, in hindsight, it appears that they had only installed the Server App, but not the Server Admin tools.
Unfortunately, I am not a system admin, but I played one on TV <grin>
All kidding aside ... I'm willing to learn, but would need most of the basics controlled through the GUI ... and then feel comfortable reading up and editting configuration files and running commands from the Terminal.
On this line, is there good documentation of this, or is this something that you know because you are familiar with Unix?    ie something like the alternate port issue ... is this something in the GUI, or something I would have to edit via Terminal?
Just trying to make an informed decision before jumping platforms.
    Thanks
    David

  • Missing Lion Server Directory

After getting Lion Server up and running for a few days, I ran in too several issues.  First, when Server.app is open, I receive errore reading settings when trying to enable web service.  I have looked at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15859672#15859672 as well as https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/10.7/#apd163efc3a-1465-4a44-ad2d- c76094144512 but get invalid command error.  I then deleted Server.app and emptied trash adn rebooted.  Then went to the App store and DL'd it again.  Now the odd thing is that in /Library/Server/ there are only folders for iChat and Podcast Library.  and in About This Mac, it shows as v. 10.7.
Anyone have any thoughts or solutions?
    Thanks.

  • Lion Server Purchased in App Store

    Hi,
I purchased and insstalled Lion Server in App Store.  It went fine, but when I look in "Purchased" tab in App Store, "Lion Server" is listed as "INSTALL" as opposed to "INSTALLED."  Is it normal??

Thank you .

Simplest way is to write the program to create anew thread to handle each client
when the ServerSocket accepts a new connection a new thread should be created and that will handle the client. The main threadshould go back to accept next client
    while(true){
       Soeket socket = serverSocket.acept();
new ClientHandler(socket).start(); /ClientHandler is the class that should be handling the communication with the client
    }

  • OSX Lion Server vs FTP home server

After using macs for so long, this might be a dumb question. I have a small home studio and have the need to set up a server for file sharing and syncing with my two partners, one here in GA and one in New Jersey. I was reading on OSX Lion Server and a few features have been removed or is not up to par with SL Server. Is the Lion Server a good choice for me? No need for email server as we all have IMAP email accounts, syncing them is not an issue. Would Lion Server allow me to remotly log in into my Mac for file editing, just in case? Perhaps something similar to dropbox file syncing?
Is there any other good choice? We're all Macs of course, at home I have a Mac Pro and an iMac that I'm planing to set as a server. I guess my questions is, what's the easiest way? Or Do I just need an FTP Server at home?
    Help appreciated.

    great plan pointm!
VPN is a (almost) secure tunnel to your local network.
Doing it that way will simplify security and administration. Security will rest in VPN encription, and all the tests you run in your local office will work for your remote partners when they are connected to the VPN.
Throught VPN, the use of FTP or other insecure protocols is not potentially harmful, because they travel throught the VPN encripted/secure tunnel.
So finally, only VPN will be available from outside your local network.
This simplify the configuration of your firewall / router, and reduces the risk of having multiple services public on internet.
With this setup you'll also have all the magic that happens when two Mac's are on the same local network (bonjour, Network browsing, you know).
    regards! T
