Lion Server Time Machine with Lion Client

I have had a Lion Server running for a couple of months with no problem acting as a repository for Time Machine Backups from 4 Snow Leopard Clients. I have two external USB hard drives partioned for each user's Time Machine.
Today I upgraded the clients to Lion, and now Time Machine on all of the clients cannot see the partioned disks on the Lion Server. Therefore, I have no disk to select for the client's destination.
The Lion Server is updated to most recent and at 10.7.2. The File Sharing switch is on and nothing has been changed as for as permissions or security on the external disks. The external disks show up in the Finder and can see contents and info in them. They also show up as share points on the Server App.
The clients are now also Lion and updated to the most recent.
Seems pretty basic, don't know what else to do.

Finally figured it out on my own 2 weeks later.
You have to open the Lion Server app and then turn on Time Machine on the server.
It will then ask what disk you want to use, which in my case was an external 2tb USB.
My confusion was that this is not they way you had to do it on Snow Leopard Server.
On SLS, I never used Time Machine, but had to partition my external disk individually for each user. e.g. 2tb disk was partioned into 4 separate volumes. This was necessary to keep one user's Time Machine backup from taking up the whole disk and not leaving room for the other users.
You then setup these partitions as Time Machine Sharepoint which would then show up as a choice on the users machine under Time Machine preferences, select disks.
Therefore, under SLS, a user could select from any number of partions to backup to on the server. On Lion Server, it appears you do not have a choice and can only backup to the one disk you selected on the Server App.
At the risk of carrying on a conversation with myself online, my concern is now about limiting the size of the individual user's sparse bundle to again keep one user from taking up the entire disk for their Time Machine. I guess that is another fight for another day.

Best Setup for Lion Server Time Machine Backup with Drobo?

I've been thinking about this a lot, yet I don't feel I have a good solution for this, so I'm going to throw it out to the community.
I have a home server setup using a Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.2 with a Firewire 800 Drobo attached. The Drobo is used for both Time Machine backups and files. I also have a Powerbook G4 running Leopard and a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.2 which connect to the Server and the Drobo wirelessly thorugh an Airport Extreme.
I want to use Time Machine to have all of my computers back up to the server & Drobo, but realize there are several ways to go, each with their pluses and minuses:
Server Time Machine Backup:
+ Centralizes backup process, rules, and other elements
+ Currently Mac Mini is backing up to the Drobo correctly using this process
+ Have setup size limit on Server backup so that it does not eat up file space
- Would combine laptop backups with server backup into one sparse image: this would lead to the computer with the largest backup needs taking up too much space
Client-Driven Time Machine Backup:
+ Allows for customization of backup processes by computer
+ Can setup specific space requirements for each computer
+ Backups are separate from each other
- Wireless backup from laptops to Drobo is not functioning currently
Any thoughts or experiences on how best to set this up? I tend to do most of my work on the MacBook, hence I am concerned about it having it's backup space eaten up by the server, but that may be more of a theoretical issue than a real one.

Well I'm not sure if I am following you but I will explain how I set mine up. When I got the Drobo I inserted 2 drives and selected the highest available volume I could (16TB). My drives are 4 TB each and I knew I would soon add 2 more. Then Drobo did its thing and prepared these drives. The Drobo shows up on my mini desktop as an external drive. When I log into my server from my other computer I can see the mini server volume and the Drobo volume. I can access each no problem. They act as regular volumes. Soon after I added the second two drives and everything stayed the same meaning I could still see and access the Drobo on the desktop of my mini. So it sounds like you used the Drobo dashboard to partition yours for two volumes? Are they both showing on the desktop?
"Maybe the Drobo needs to be mounted on the desktop to be considered AFP feature enabled." I could be wrong and hopefully someone will correct me but I think the Drobo (or volumes) have to be mounted on the desktop to work with AFP.

Lion Server Time Machine sparsebundles

Subject indicates where I think my problem lies, but for background:
MacBook Pro got bit by Thunderbolt firmware upgrade snafu last week. Contacted Apple Store the next morning, saw Genius at 11:00. Concuded hardware and firmware were OK and because I had a Time Machine backup less than an hour old I gave permission to install a fresh 10.7.3 image on my bare metal.
Got home and booted Command-R. Happily saw my Time Machine shares on Mac Mini Server running Lion Server 10.7.4. Yes, "shares." A Backup and Backup-1.
As a Lion Server novice I found a tip here to "defaults write /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/Backups timeMachineBackup '(1)' to make my shared mountpoint work with Time Machine over the network. Perhaps thats how one does it if one doesn't have Server. I later found the Time Machine panel in Server and turning that on gave me a Backups-1 share as well.
So back with Command-R my MacBook Pro saw both the Backups and Backups-1, I navigated to Backups and it saw its previous Time Machine archive. I started a bare metal restore and happily went to bed. Next morning found the restore stopped at about 20% of the progress bar and message instructing me to reboot the computer. Repeated, same results.
Back to Command-R I reinstalled a new copy of Lion from Apple over the internet. Did minimal configuration until I could get into Time Machine and try to manually pull files. Again it quit unexpectedly no matter holding the Option key to Verify Backups passed.
So back to the Mac Mini Server I turn off Sharing from System Preferences and Time Machine from Server. The /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/Backups file disappears when Server Time Machine is turned off.
I have attempted to move "David Kelly's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" from "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Backups" to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Shared Items/Backups" where Server Time Machine seems to expect it. The problem now is that the MacBook Pro doesn't see this Time Machine archive in that location, or see it at all.
I have performed the Disk Utility verify tasks listed in the Time Machine FAQ with no errors found or repaired.

Restore Lion OS from Lion Server Time Machine Backup?

I am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install. I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use. In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc. I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. QUESTION: When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store. I'd really love to be able to do this with Time machine. Any chance? or do I need to do the dark deed of 2 days of backup?

Sorry, I don't mean to be stupid, but I want to be sure. My impresion of Time machine disk images (I'm not a computer genius, but I'm , lets say, an expert novice) is that disk images (my term for the 'total view' of a computers main disk), differ depending on the OS. I assume that applications and preferences referenced under SL could not be seamlessly imported into a Lion environment. I'm assumng that the upgrade to Lion server has irrevocaby altered my startup/main volume into a "Lion Server" volume, and that if I try to pull my applications/data/preferences/mailboxes back onto a fresh Lion interface, it won't work. Are you saying I'm wrong, and that I can simply erase my disc, clean install Lion via an internet connection, and re-import my "lion Server- altered' stuff back from aLion-server Time Machine disk image, seamlessly, into a Lion OS environment? Sorry to be so concrete, but my wife will kill me if I %$@ the bed on this. I appreciatre your help.

How to reinstall on client from Lion Server Time Machine backup?

I have a Mac Mini running Lion Server and a black MacBook running Lion. I recently needed to to perform a format and reinstall of the MacBook, so I used the MacBook's Recovery HD partition and reinstalled Lion. I then went back to Recovery HD to reinstall apps from my Time Machine backup' which is managed by the Lion Server Mac Mini. On first attempt, I saw the right files, but in the process it hung. I recently tried to do it again, and now it claims that there are no backups found.
My suspicion is that as this is a Lion Server managed backup, it bundles the server backup and the MacBook backup in the same bundle. Revovery HD looks for the latest compete bundle, then finds the matching backup for the MacBook. However, if the Mini is continuing backups of its own, the more recent bundle backups only have mini info, not the MackBook, hence they "disappeared".
I can see older backups when I look at the backup drive, so I suspect that my MacBook files are still there.
Any suggestions on how to recover and get my MacBook files reinstalled? I'm new to this home server thing, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

One partition 2.5TB will be my new Time Machine Backups and the other 2.5TB for iTunes Library so I never have to worry about this again.
Your worry now is what will you do when the single hard drive containing both your library and its backup makes a screeching sound one day and is toast, or get stolen?

Lion server, time machine for clients on multiple hard disks

I'm trying to setup a macmini server with four different firewire drives (has this working in 10.6.8 working great) however in lion server you can only have ONE timemachine backup destination.
apple put an Share items/Backups folder with a .com.apple.timemachine.supported file in it. and set permissions to a group com.apple.backup_access
However i can't dublicate this setup and have the system accept an extra folder on another drive.
Anybody has any ideas to get this working ?

Network drives and time machine with Lion

Since upgrading to Lion my MyBookWorld network drive is no longer working with time machine. The drive is recognised as being there by finder and time machine but when I try and connect to it as registered user there is a warning saying There was a problem connecting to the server "MyBookWorld.Local". This drive was working fine until I upgraded to lion. There is no new firmware from Wesern Digital for the disc. It looks like that will be the solution. does anyone have any idea when that may be forthcoming?

How to restore from time machine with Lion preinstalled?

Yesterday I got an iMac and OSX.7 Lion was preinstalled. I set up a time machine disk and performed a full backup, and it will work for file histories, but if my main disk fails how do I restore from this time machine backup?
I never had to restore in Leopard or Snow Leopard, but I believe the procedure was to insert your optical install and/or rescue disk and from there was an option to restore from a time machine backup. If I don't have a rescue disc, as no media whatsoever came with the iMac, how do I perform a restore?
I think if you upgrade to Lion it gives you a recovery partition but I don't think I have that with Lion preinstalled. At least I can't find it. Ideas?

Sorry, I RTFM'd and found this: "To open the Mac OS X Utilities application: Restart your computer while holding down the Command and R keys". From there you can restore from a time machine backup. Sorry for the post.

How to restore iCal using Time Machine with Lion OS

Just got off the phone with Apple Support. With Lion, your User/Library/Calendar file is now hidden. Here is how to find it in order to restore data to your iCal.
Close iCal
Open FINDER
Use “GO” button located across top
Hit and hold the OPTION key on your keyboard
You’ll see LIBRARY appear in the list (this is a hidden file you cannot see otherwise)
Select LIBRARY
Select CALENDAR
(you can see all the .calendar files under this item)
Open/Enter TIME MACHINE
Go to day/time you want to restore back to
Highlight the CALENDAR file (which can now be seen by virtue of your efforts above)
Select RESTORE from Time Machine
Open iCal to view the updated data.

I've got a dumb question - I've tried this a number of times. You have given the clearest directions that I've read so far. However, after trying a number of different dates, it still will not populate. Most of my calendar entries were done with an iPhone, then synced via iCloud to laptop. Would that prevent them from being synced to the Time Machine? I'm at a loss (in more ways than one).

Problems Ejecting Time Machine with Lion

After installing Lion, I plugged in my Time Machine (don't have Time Capsule) to perform a new backup, post-Lion install. Worked fine...went to bed. Woke up this morning and noticed it was in process of backing up 560 KB. Progress showed "Backing up 0 KB of 560 KB". It stayed on 0 for about five minutes with no progression. I went to manually eject Time Machine and it said "Stopping Backup". It remained on that for another five minutes without completing the ejection request. I did a "Relaunch" of the Finder, as that was the only thing running, then I got the spinning beach ball. Waited another five minutes and it did nothing. I then decided to hold down the Power button and force shut down my Mac. That was the only way I was able to safely unplug my Time Machine. Has anyone else experienced the same issues when using an external HD for Time Machine? Not being able

Wanted to add one more note about this - I was able to do a complete backup successfully (about 9 GB) before turning in last night. I ejected Time Machine so I could check my email and do some surfing. Before going to sleep, I plugged in TM again and left it alone till this morning. That is when I noticed it said "Backing up 0KB of 560KB". So I was able to perform a full backup successfully, post-Lion Install, but can't get it to eject when I want it to now without stalling/freezing.

How to find backup on Lion Server time machine backup?

I have a MacBook laptop running Lion that has gotten automated Time Machine network backups by my Mac Mini running Lion Server. Had to do a reformat of the laptop and when I used Recovery HD from the laptop to find the laptop backup files on the server, I can't find them. I can find the server backup file, and the network version of time machine may bundle the laptop backup and mini backup in that file, but Recovery HD claims there are no valid backups.
Am I doing this the wrong way? Any help?

Bootable Time Machine with Lion 10.7.2 - Boot Camp issues.

Hey all,
I have done as I was told and updated Lion as the updates have appeared. Now, it seems, I have a bootable Time Machine drive where before, I have not been able to boot from the Time Machine drive (never installed a System folder, etc.).
The problem here is that when I try to use Boot Camp and still have my Time Machine drive installed, (I see the drive when holding the option key to select boot drive), Boot camp gets "stuck" not knowing how to boot unless I disconnect the Time Machine drive. It appears that Windows thinks that it has two boot drives and doesn't know what to do, until the Time Machine drive is pulled.
Anyone else, or is this just me?
And when did Lion install the bootable folder on Time Machine??

Sometimes. Sometimes they can be repaired by Disk Utility. Sometimes only a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app like DiskWarrior ($100) can fix them. Sometimes nothing can. Sometimes you can restore some individual items, sometimes not. Sometimes you can do a full system restore from some backups, other times not.
does it help that I am using a Gigabit WIRED connection between iMac - 10/100/1000 switch - Airport Extreme Base Station?
Probably -- you won't have WIFI interference.
But if you have an iMac, why not just connect the external HD directly to your Mac? That's much faster and more reliable (and supported).
You'd need to erase the disk in that case, since Time Machine won't bother with a sparse bundle at all on a direct backup. Just format the disk as GUID, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and let 'er rip!

What OSs does Lion Server Time Machine Support?

Obviously, it supports Lion,, but can I backup to a Lion server running Leopard or Snow Leopard? Anyone know for sure?

Hello, I hope someone can point me in the right direction,
I recently upgraded (clean install) all of my machines to Lion. I decided to "start over" with a new time machine setup where each computer would have its own partition on the external drive. I hooked this drive up to a mac mini I had and connected all the other machines to it via the LAN and everything went well for a few days... until I tried to be clever. I decided to try Lion Server on the mini. After I added Server (which just seems to be a bunch of admin utils) and rebooted, my time machine setup stopped working. I am now getting the dreaded "the network backup disk does not support the required AFP features" (specifically TM Lock Stealing). From the client log:
8/7/11 9:31:28.531 PM com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
8/7/11 9:31:28.548 PM com.apple.backupd: Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM

Also, that volume doesn't appear anymore in the "Select Disk" dialog of the client. The volume does appear in sharing and I can copy files to/from it via Finder on the client.
Now, I went in to Lion Server and enabled "Time Machine" and set the "backup destination" to the same volume. That works fine. I can select that location and backups from my client go with no problem. That makes me think this is an arcane configuration issue... how can I get Tiger Server (or maybe it's on the client end) to recognize that the exact same disk/partition, just a different Folder is ok to save TIme Machine backups?
In other words... One share: "Yggdrasil TM" is at the root of a partition, which used to work for Time Machine in Lion prior to Server. Another share, "Backups" is inside "Yggdrasil TM" (/Volumes/Yggdrasil TM/Shared Items/Backups on the mini server). Any ideas?
I did notice that /Volumes/Yggdrasil TM/Shared Items/Backups has a .com.apple.timemachine.supported file in it, but it still didn't work after I "sudo cp -p" that file into where my older sparsebundle was.
I even went so far as to double check permissions and ACLs for both directories as being the same:

Hi, it's been a while, but what I think I did was when I enabled the "real" Lion Time Machine Backups location, it created a sharepoint called Backups.plist. I looked at what was set in there to see if there was anything likely with this command
sudo defaults read /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sharepoints/Backups.plist
and I found this bit, which looked interesting
timeMachineBackup = (
1
so, I figured I'd try it in the other plist files where I really wanted the backups as I was basically stumped. Luckily for me, it worked.
As for how I figured out where the sharepoint plist files were... I have a long name and I got tired of seeing the mounts show up as "MyFirstName MyLastName's Public Folde" (note truncation) on all my macs, so I went looking for those files some time ago. :-)

When I try to enter a time machine with Snow Leopard backups Lion I get an error code -6584 ... how to fix?

Hi.
I had a first gen time machine with backups all on Snow Leopard.
This died (power supply), and I bought a new time capsule, because to fix the old one would cost nearly the same amount.
Since, I have started using Lion, and backed up onto my new time capsule in Lion.
Unfortunately, there was a file I deleted that I really need for a Logic Audio project, that is only present on the old time capsule.
I got the old time capsule fixed, so it powers up. I even extended my current wireless network with it. I can see inside it -- all the data that I dragged onto its HD in the past is present, and the "Sparse Bundle" containing the data for the time capsule save-states is present too.
Now, when I try to "Enter" my old time capsule, I get this error message:
I tried entering the time machine via WiFi and via ethernet, to no avail.
Can anyone help me to access these old save states on my old "snow leopard" time capsule?
I was thinking maybe I need to try to access it from a machine with Snow Leopard?
Please help.
