Lion Slow Boot on MBP 2010

I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010) with i7 4GB ram with OS X Lion (installed correctly) with Windows 7 on bootcamp. It takes me 1 minute to boot into lion but before with snow leopard it took me less than 30 seconds. My friends who have lion also take 30 seconds or so. I have regularly repair my permissions and clean cache and cookies with CleanMyMac. I have also run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) and reset my PRAM. All went okay and there wasn't any difference. Is bootcamp effecting my Lion boot time ?
Thanks,
Arush Wadhwa

Hi I,
You can check for any boot arguments in your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
If you have any Kernel Flags your Mac will observe it when booting, mine has no Kernel Flags.
You can read about it by using de command line "man com.apple.Boot.plist" in your /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application. After reading hit Q key to quit the manual displaying and use "exit" before quitting Terminal.
I made a quick search and found this 54 replies topic here, it seams to be an update issue, check it out, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2141922&tstart=1
Good luck.

  • Slow boot/startup MBP after Mavericks upgrade

Hi Macbook Pro users out there!
Since upgrading my MBP Mid 2009 from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, a simple system restart takes about 3-5 minutes, compared to about 15-30 seconds before the upgrade. Most of the booting time ist consumed after entering my password.
    Some more technical details:
    * MBP equipped with SSD and 3.01 GHz Intel Core Duo
    * I did a "clean" install from an Mavericks image and used a time machine backup to reinstall apps & docs
    * I switched ON file-vault
    * volume check shows no errors; access rights check shows a lot of issues, but they cannot seem to be repaired (tried this several times!)
    * only few background processes running and no active applications
Does anyone of you have a hint or advice for me, how to speed up the system-boot process? Everything worked perfectly with Mountain Lion. Is anybody experiencing similar problems? What exactly happens after entry of the password, besides loading of active apps and processes? Is there a way to find out, which part of the boot process takes so long?
Thank you for your help in advance!

I have a new Macbook Pro 15 Retina, and since installing Bootcamp I have a 3 minute boot time before my password.  Bootcamp installation was quite a chore, so I am not wild about wiping out the machine for a clean install, especially if this is a product of Mavericks (I would get the same result).  The original clean machine booted in 20 to 30 seconds...just a bit longer than my 2010 MB Pro with Snow Leopard and Bootcamp.  I assume there is a diagnostic tool to figure out what is slowing the boot, but I have not found it yet.

  • Is Lion slow booting up and shutting down?

After I installed Lion, my macbook pro is slow to boot up and shut down.  How can you turn off "re-open windows when logging back on"?

The beeps on startup are often indicative of RAM problems.  The opening chime is the only normal noise on startup.  Shutdown should be essentially silent.  To the Apple store, PRONTO!
    Ciao.

  • OSX Lion not booting on mbp early 2011

Hi I have a 2011 early mbp. Ive never had any issues with and and I upgraded to Lion when it came out. About 4 days ago it just would not boot into Lion at all. Would get stuck at the Apple Picture and the circle thing and thats it. I tried to boot the recovery partition and it would still get stuck at the same spot. I took out my hard drive and connected it Via USB on my iMac and it boots up just fine. I than used the recovery from the iMac and reinstalled Lion on the mbp hard drive. I put the hard drive back and it still wont boot up. Any ideas?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode ?
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
If still failing, sounds like an internal component failing and would visit an Apple Store and show them it's not the hard disk since it boots via USB.

  • Imac 27 Lion slow boot (2012)

    hello
After several months looking for answers and try to do everything that was said inmany forums. decided to put my question here and explain what I have done.
My imac already had a boot 35 seconds, is now with 1:40 m.
    What I have done:
    Clear chaches
deleting the Networkaccount-Server (System Preferences->Users->Login Options) ( i never had)
repaired permissions ( i do all the time)
closed apps before shutting down ( i like to turn on and have the app opens like i have before turn off, but i did that and the time is teh same)
uninstall Little Snitch (some people said, that delayed a few seconds at startup)
selection of the boot drive in "Startup Disk"
    reset nvram
Have much space avaible in startup disk.
in network change DHCP to manual
startup apps I already deleted but no results and i put again the apps.
    Nothing worked
And I think the mac has gotten slower over time
Here some prints from my system

    Hi ...
Open System Preferences then select Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab.
Click the lock icon bottom left corner of the window to make changes. You may be prompted for your admin password.
Delete all the applications you have listed in that window. You can do that by selecting an app then click - (minus)
Now disable the Lion "resume" feature.
Select the General tab in System Preferences.
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
    Restart your Mac.
If that helped, you can re add one app at a time to the Login Items window then restart your Mac to test startup time. As many apps as you have listed there, I'm not surprised it's taking so long for your Mac to boot.

  • Slow boot on mbp running 10.6.4 with progress bar

    Hi
My Macbook pro running 10.6.4 has recently become slow on boot up.
When i do a clean boot or restart i see a progress bar on the apple logo which now seems to take a minute or so to load.
    I've never seen this before.
I've tried things such as PRAM reset, cache clears, etc
disk utility isn't showing any hard drive errors
    any suggestions?

  • Lion "Option" boot issue on 2010 Mac Mini?

Last night I came across an odd problem.  I wanted to
boot into my Window7 partition so I could watch a new
BluRay I just purchased and doing the "Option" key
power on, it just sat at the gray screen for more than
a minute.  Thinking I may have encountered a "freeze"
issue I let go of the "option' key and in a few seconds
    started to boot to Lion.
I realized I had a Firewire drive attached that I use for
various temporary storage of videos, software, etc.  I
ejected it, shut down and tried the process all over.
This time, the "option" boot brought up the usual selections.
Well booted into Win7 and watched my BluRay.
Afterward, I shut down and did some tests.  Plugged in
my clone drive and did the "option" boot and all was normal
getting the display of all the bootable volumes.
I then repeated the original process that I had the problem
with and got the same result of sitting for ever on the gray
    screen.
I then tried plugging the drive in via USB and the "option"
    boot worked properly.
Okay, so I thought maybe that even though the drive in question
showed no faults with various tests may have been flakey in
some way, I tried another drive that I use for photo backup
and plugged into Mini via Firewire and tried the "option" boot.
Low and behold, I had the same gray screen forever until
released the option key and booting proceeded to Lion.
So, question is, has anyone else seen an issue like this
where if a Firewire drive is attached without an OS the
boot process hangs when doing the "option" boot?
Also, this behavior did not start until after Lion
    was installed.

THanks ds store for the links.  I had previoulsy seen those but was confused as I've seen some other postings saying that yes you can use Time Machine and go back to a previous back up when Snow Leopard was installed and it will reinstall Snow Leopard and all files at that time and remove Mountain Lion.  Other posting such as the ones you linked say that I have to use the Snow Leopard Install Disks- erase my hard drive and basiclly start from scratch reinstalling all applications and user files/documents that I've saved etc....  If the time machine option will work - I'd really like to go that route.

  • Mountain lion slow boot

    Hello All,
I'm having a lot of issues with Mountain Lion, it crashes a lot with the most easiest tasks. Also, the boot time went from 37secs to 15-17mins. I did not make a fresh install, just installed over OS X Lion.
    Please help!!
    -Paul.

That question mark means it can't find the original for what was in the Dock. You can just drag those out of the Dock and replace them if you want. I'm not exactly sure what you meant by "erase them," but I'm assuming you mean remove them from the Dock and not delete the entire application--that won't solve the problem you are having.
To replace them (if you know what they were), find them in the Applications folder and drag the icon to the Dock.
What do you mean by "Crashes?" Are they kernel panics?
If so, can you post a panic log?

  • Why did Mountain Lion slow down my shut down and boot up time for my MacBook Pro?

I had Snow Leopard, and not Lion.  My shut down time rose from about 5 seconds to 10-15 seconds.  My start up time also increased noticeabley.  Any reason why because I thought Mountain Lion was supposed to be faster.

I have very few apps other than what came on my MBP.  I've checked most other, really dont think this is the problem.  My MBP is not junked/cluttered up.  Not many programs, just pictures, videos, and some docs.  Everything seems to work smoothly once on, but the start up and shut down times are still double what they were when I bought with snow leopard (Not Windows like, but scary close).  I cannot find any solution that will work.  My opinion, should not have to do a clean install for it to work.  Some folks have not experienced these issues, so I think its some setting or something else that is my problem.  I have 4GB RAM, and considering increasing to 8, but from what I have read else where thsi will not increase boot or shutdown, way even increase.  Right now, not sure if the new ML features out way the slow boot and shut down.

  • Slow Boot MBP 2012 SSD on 10.8.3 - Tried several fixes

    Hi,
    I have a MBP 2012, I upgrade it with Samsung SSD 830 256GB and 16GB RAM.
    Boot: 50 seconds
Shut down: 20-30 seconds (uncheck documents on iCloud preferences and seems to shut down on 3 to 5 seconds)
Since the begining I figure how to make it work properly.
I made a backup with SuperDuper! and later, after some time when I want to repair permissions I realize I have lost my Recovery HD, after some Google magic I reinstall ML and solve the problem.
Start up time was too slow, then I do some search and anfer SMC + PRAM (NVRAM) reset everything seems to work fine, for some time.
Every time slow boots and shut downs come back, I do more searchs and find some fixes, but those fixes dont work the sameway for everybody, even on same machines and dont last forever.
Uninstall Little Snitch, Clean Caches, Fonts, Uninstall Parallels, Do some vudu with Cocktail and Onyx, Reinstall Mountain Lion, Update my System to the last 10.8.3 with the Combo Update, Selected my boot drive on system preferences (I just have one disc on my mac, no Fusion Drive so I dont understand why I have ti try this but did it).
I repeat some of the fixes, but always the same result, Boot time always on 50 seconds.
After some research on forums I look at mi Console and found those under BOOT_TIME

Waiting for an answer I decided to start from RecoveryHD, delete my Macintosh HD and Reinstall Mountain Lion.
I have my data safe, I just have to copy my Documents and stuff and reinstall a bunch of apps if everything goes fine.
I would like to solve this other than have to do a Clean Reinstall.
Last night try to do a clean reinstall, but nothing change, still at 50 seconds boot.
Start to thinking if its something related to my disk. Seems to be the in the last firmware available for the SSD 830. TRIM is not enabled at this moment on my mac, and write & read speeds are fine.
    After last boot found this:
    26/04/13 13:28:09,338 root[109]: /usr/libexec/ntpd-wrapper: scutil key State:/Network/Global/DNS not present after 30 seconds
Google a little an then found this:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4070843?start=0&tstart=0 and decided to try a Hardware Test. The first Test ant fine in less than 5 minutes, now trying a complete test: After 75 minutes everything is fine. Hardware test OK.
I will continue updating this if I can fix it.

  • MBP early 2011, slow boot, have tried: PRAM reset, SMC reset, permissions, login items, verbose mode. It stops for 2mins on spinning gear

I've read quite a few similar posts and tried most of the advice given. It seems to me though that it could be a number of things, but I just haven't found the right fix. I understand that getting an SSD would help greatly, but the MBP started doing the slow boots quite suddenly, so I don't think it's because of gradually filling the HDD with stuff. When I startup in verbose mode, it stops at running fsck, and just stays there for a while. Working in Lion is not as slow as the startup, but definitely not as fast as it should be, and shut downs are not slow at all.
I have used about 500gb of the 750gb HDD, and startup times used to be at about 30 secs, and are now over 2 mins, without increasing or decreasing.

Update: also tried Repair Disk and even reinstalling Lion (not clean).

  • MBP retina slow booting after repartitioning and cloning OS X

I bought a Macbook Pro retina 15" (512/16GB) few days back. OS : Mountain Lion 10.8.4
I wanted to partition the SSD to have Windows 7 in Boor Camp (120 GB), then a partition with ExFAT (260 GB) for shared data between Mac and Windows and lastly Mac HD (120 GB) with Mountain Lion OS X.
After searching in the net, I got this link :http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?/topic/139815-successful-setup-os-x-lion-bo otcamp-win7-data-partition/page__st__14 and followed the steps as described the steps in pane # 21.
So to state again what I did,
    1. Used the disk utility to resize the Macintosh HD to 120 GB.
    2. Make another partition of 260 GB in the remaining space. So I now have three partition, the first with Mountain Lion, the second (260 Gb) and the third (120 GB) free.
    3. Booting with the recovery option, cloned the Mac HD from first partition to the last partition.
    4. The system was booting fine with the newly cloned Mac HD (last partition).
    5. Then again booting with the recovery option erased the first partition and formatted with ExFat to make it Bootcamp.
After these steps the system is booting fine with the cloned Mac HD bootable drive but booting is very slow. It takes a minute to show up the apple logo. How can I fix this ?
Should I do a fresh installation of OS X in partition 3 ? Please advise.
    Thanks and best regards,

I solved the problem of slow booting.
Selecting the Mac HD from the start up disk option solved the problem. There was only one option : Mac HD , so I thought it is selected by default. But after selecting it manually and restarting, now boot takes only a few secs. Thanks.

  • Slow Booting time after installing MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 on 13 Inches Mac 2010 model

I'm experiencing a slow boot time after my computer installed a MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 itself on 13 Inches 2010 model, how to downgrade or fix it?
My computer is starting 2 times slower then it should be, why Apple done this to me?
Please help who really know somthing about Macs.

I have the same problem, especially when I open my laptop from sleep.  It takes at least 2 minutes for the computer Internet connection to work.
Never had that problem prior to the last firmware update 2.7.
Is there a way to revert back to 2.6?
