Lion Taking longer to shut down?

Hello!
I downloaded and istalled Lion with no problems. I noticed however an increase in the shutdown time. With SL it would shut down almost instantly. With Lion I'm getting the spining wheel for about 20 seconds before complete shutdown. Is it normal?
I have a brand new Macbook Pro 13'' (i5, 4Gb RAM).
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Marc

Please note that I managed to fix both the boot and the shutdown time by uninstalling some applications not currently compatible with Lion, WITHOUT A CLEAN INSTALL!
I tried the cache cleaning trick using iTweax, but the shutdown time was still horrible. My boot time was close to 1min30
I read in another thread that someone deleted old applications not compatible with Lion and it solved their issue, so I tried it.
I uninstalled Mac The Ripper, which was not compatible with Lion (the app was "hidden" inside a sub-folder and it was missed during my day-1 Lion cleanup of all the apps bearing the "not compatible" icon). I uninstalled Gimp! which I don't use anyway.
Note: I erased all related files using the very good App Cleaner software which finds and lets you remove everything related to an app.
I tried to shutdown again, though I had Skype and MSN Messenger on, and those slowdown the shutdown process with all the questions "are you sure you want to terminate this chat session". Still it was very fast, no beach ball and no hiccups.
The boot time is now 52 seconds up to the login screen. This used to be my shutdown and boot time together before Lion.
Running Mid 2009 15'' Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz, 8GB RAM and 640GB 5400rpm Toshiba HDD.

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard then Lion and the computer shut down after installation.
Now when it starts up it gets as far as the apple icon and then shuts down again
whenever I turn it on it loads that far and then closes.
    HELP!

Restore your bootable backup/clone  or Time Machine backup of Snow Leopard, launch Disk Utility from the install disc, repair the boot volume, and reinstall Lion.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Mac OS X takes very long to shut down because processes are still alive

    Hello everyone!
Since the latest update to Safari 5.0.1, iTunes 9.2.1 and Trackpad Update, the system takes unusual long to shut down.
The screen gets the usual blue, a spinning wheel appears and is there for about 20-30 seconds.
Before the updates, it was about 5-10 seconds.
When booting in verbose mode, it tells me at shutdown that some core system processes (among them launchd and other boot stuff) are still alive (or, as the OS says, "PID XXXX is still alive").
The only thing to workaround (which isn't the solution for forever!) is to run "sudo shutdown -s 0" on the console.
Is there a way to avoid this waiting for still-alive processes?
    Thanks in advance!

I have just restored my hard drive and now I too have this same situation. Have you been able to resolve it. If so would you be good enough to tell me how.
    Cheers,

  • Why is it taking too long to shut down

all this while it just took 2 sec to shut down ... thn suddenly my mac book pro retina takin more thn 10 sec to shut down... plizz someone help me!

MacBook Pros do not run Mac OS 9.2.x.  They may run Mac OS X 10.9.2, which is an operating system that is at least 11 years newer.    Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to verify your Mac OS X version.
10 seconds is still not bad, but any software you may have installed may slow it down.   Also, remember, Macs do not always quit applications when you close their last window.   Go to the menu for the application to Quit it.  Use command-Tab to verify nothing else is open other than the Finder, as that is always open.

  • OS X Lion has begun to shut down VERY slowly

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem — the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
If there are runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
    Linc,
Thanks for your offer of assistance.
For some reason, I could not find the kernel.log on my startup drive (anything). I did find a kernel.log on my alternate local drive from an old system from Sept. 2012, but it appears to be irrelevant. Note that I am running ML (Mountain Lion) 10.8.2 on a Mac Pro 3,1.
    A couple of other notes:
Doing a Permission Repair seems to alleviate theproblem, short term. It recurs.
Doing a P-RAM reset helps for awhile.
This same problem occurs on two other machines, MacMini Running OS 10.8 Server, a Macbook Pro (with the same client OS)
The Crash Log saves as a new name?
    Crash Log (also called filecoordinationd??)

  • Recently OSX takes longer to Shut Down is this a sign of impending failure?

Just in the last week or so OSX 10.5.1 is taking a longer time to Shut Down.
When I first got OSX Leopard the desktop icons would first disappear and then the whole thing would Shut Down about 4 or 5 seconds later.
Now, all the desktop icons disappear as soon as I hit Shut Down but the purple screen behind them is left lingering for a good 30 seconds before it finally closes and the little spinning wheel keeps rotating so something seems to be causing it to hang in the Shut Down mode.
Is this a sign of impending doom?
I only installed it about 3 months ago, and up until this started, it's been fine.
    No other problems are apparent.

Does it make any difference if you manually quit all applications first?
I'm not sure if this would show you anything useful, but you might launch the Console utility and look for messages from the time of the shutdown process.

  • GT70 takes longer to shut down with Windows 8.1

    Hello all,
Hope at this time I am not the only one experiencing my laptop taking longer to shutdown before 8.1. I am wondering what I can do to lessen my shut down time for my laptop. I have a GT70-0ne. The shut down process before I upgraded took less then three minutes but now that I upgraded to 8.1 takes around five to six or even longer.  I have read several ways to get rid of the longer shut down period is two make two accounts and delete one, change the performance options, and last revert back to regular windows 8. Hope to hear some advice on the best option to resolve the issue.

Lots of things can prevent Windows from shutting down. Even when I forgot to close my document file, Windows just won't shut down and won't log me off, instead it just dim the background and pop up some options.
Having Malwarebytes and Kaspersky running is not ideal, because they will likely to conflict with each other. Turn off 1 of them.
It can also means your hard disk fragmentation is high. Try to defrag your harddisk once in a while.
It could be one annoying features that Windows try to compensate its sluggish OS called hybrid shutdown (this is to hibernate your computer instead really shut down, so your computer can boot up faster in the next time you turn it on). You can google it.

  • Lion os can't shut down

after the installation of lion, my macbook pro cant not shut down, anyone has this experience and any resolution?

Guys, glad to inform the problem solved after a fresh install of lion. Here is what I have done.
    1. Redownload lion -
    - go to app store, press down option key while click the purchase in app store, click install to redownload again. The lion app will sit in the application folder. For details, google redownload lion.
    2. Burn the lion start up DVD -
    a. Right click on Lion installer and choose the option to “Show Package Contents.”
    b. find the SharedSupport folder, and inside the SharedSupport folder find the “InstallESD.dmg.”
    c. Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to another folder.
    d. use disk utility, click burn and select the installESD.dmg, burn it.
    3. start mac with the DVD - keep press option while press the power button, choose dvd as start up, then reinstall the lion.
    notice:
    1. You may want to buy a new hard disk to install a fresh lion. If you dont want to spend for a new hard disk, backup everything before you format the existing hard disk. A reinstall on the existing "leopard to lion" system wont resolve the shut down problem, coz I tried already. You need a fresh hard disk or partition.
    2. iphone user make sure unauthorize the existing computer for itune, if dont want to use up all the 5 accounts.
    3. Microsoft user remember to export all email to olm files or backup.
    4. The loading of lion DVD can take long time, my trial is 5-10 mins, be patient.
After the fresh install, lion can work normally as expected.

  • Computer takes too long o shut down

Recently noticed that sometimes when you turn off the computer  takes a long time I have to keep the power bottom tight  until it shuts down sure that , my question it is a hardware isues??? . Please can you tell what to do.
    Thanks,
    Oscar Velasquez

You shouldn't have to use the power button. When you choose Shut Down from the Apple menu in the upper left corner, how long does it take? How long have you left it trying to shut down? It isn't instant.

  • Mountain Lion won't sleep, shut down, restart, or log out.

    Hi All,
After Mountain Lion my 2010 iMac 27" won't sleep, shut down, restart, or log out.
Basically most functionalities of clicking the apple icon are disabled - "About this Mac" doesn't work either.
    Please help!
Before Apple fixes this, is there another way of putting my Mac to sleep or shut down?

Just adding another voice to the chorus.  Since upgrading to Mountain Lion my computer will not sleep.  The cursor freezes when I try to invoke sleep but the computer and monitor remain on.  The cursor unfreezes when I tap the spacebar the way I would normally do to wake from sleep.  Fortunately, shutdown, restart and logout function normally, so I guess I should count my blessings.  This isn't my only problem with Mountain Lion, but I didn't want to muddy the waters on this thread with other issues.

  • Longer to shut down

before I installed Lion my computer use to take 5 seconds to shut down, loved it, now it takes 15 seconds, not complaining but wondered if this is normal.

  • Why does plugin-container.exe start 15 times (and then stop) during shutdown (taking MINUTES to shut down)?

FF takes forever to close (minutes). When using process explorer I see that as many as 15 instances of plugin-container.exe will be opened during the shut down process. I think this means that a plugin is crashing. I disabled all of the plugins and it still happened (but maybe not so many times). An obvious answer is to leave FF open but that seems kinda dumb. I haven't seemed to be able to find this addressed anywhere. I am using updated Xp, on a many year old machine. Please help.
    Thanks, John Rooks
(also, my submit button doesn't work when I try to send this in via the feedback form. (happy, sad and idea page)

It is caused by Firefox asking plugins like Flash to remove their cookies and other locally stored data.
