Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro WONT INSTALL!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought the $69 Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro (still running leopard) and when I insert the drive, the Lion Install screen opens up and it say "You cannot use this version of the application Install Mac OS X Lion with this version of Man OS X."
The Guy at the Apple store said it should just install! I hope somebody can help me through this, I shouldn't have to pay another ******* $30 to run something that was supossed to work in the first place!
< Edited By Host >

Does that mean I will have to re-install all apps? Will I have to do this regardless??
I found this article written before the Apple Lion thumb drive came out and it references the quick but techie way at the bottom of article of altering the file /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
http://www.macworld.com/article/161087/2011/07/install_lion_over_leopard.html
Will this work?

  • Replacement hard drive for late 2008 Macbook Pro

I need to replace my drive in a late 2008 Macbook Pro 15".  I can access the battery and what looks like the hard drive from the underside, if this helps.  Would this be a good replacement choice?
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279
Finding exact specs for the drive has been tricky, or maybe I just need to have the physical size verified.  What I know/have found is:
5400rpm       (would a 7200rpm improve performance, or am I limited by hardware?)
SATA II        (does this matter tese days?)
    2.5" drive   (needs verification)
open drive?  (do I need this or not?)
Any other options or advice?  I'd like to spend a small amount since this is an older computer and won't be around a whole lot longer anyway.  Thanks in advance!

  • How to update graphics card drivers for late 2008 macbook pro with Nvidia 9600m GT?

Can anybody help me update the drivers for my 9600m GT graphics card for my Late 2008 Macbook pro? I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5 with a Windows 7 partition. I have tried finding support on Nvidia's website, but at least for the 9600m GT, it isn't supported for my operating system. Would I have to update it from my Windows side? And if so, would the update apply to my OS X side as well? I have a little computer knowledge, but nothing indepth.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In OS X, Apple provides the GPU drivers and you cannot update them from NVIDIA. They are updated with each OS X update, so you are running the most recent drivers for your OS X version. OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks have got more recent GPU drivers, but it's not worth upgrading unless you need newer drivers for an app (I highly doubt this).
However, you can update the GPU drivers in Windows, and you should do it to get the best performance. You can download them from the NVIDIA site > http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us Note that drivers are only applied in the operating system you are installing them, so they will not be installed in OS X

  • Replacement optical drive for early 2008 MacBook

I own an early 2008 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" MacBook that appears to have developed a fault with the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E optical drive.
Unfortunately I am unable to get the optical drive replaced by Apple, as it seems they don't keep the parts for any machine over five years old. So I plan to replace the faulty unit myself. Can anyone recommend a replacement? The UJ-857E model doesn't appear to be available anywhere other than in the United states and then only as a refurbished unit and listed as an 857C which I assume to be from an earlier model.
I was wondering if there might be a more recent equivalent available that I might use instead. There seem to be several UJ-898 models for late 2008 MacBooks available, but I have no idea how much of a change Apple made to the internal configuration from early to late 2008.
Does anyone have any experience of replacing or upgrading their optical drive that they would be willing to share? I plan to follow the IFixit tutorials for the procedure. I just need to know what unit to buy as a replacement.

I would stick to what OWC (macsales) offers.

  • Replacing Display housing for  Early 2008 Macbook pro. older housing ok?

Hi guys! i have the newest Penryn Early 2008 Macbook pro 2.6 and have had an accident with the aluminum of the display housing. I am currently trying to find a compatible case to replace it with. I cant seem to find spare display housing that are made particularly for the new macbook pros for some reason =(
I've heard that there are different moulds of the Display housing since there are 3 different manufacturer for the LCD screen? (LG, SAMSUNG,CHIMEI)
Would the display casings of the older Intel Macbook pro work as long as I match the manufacturer? (e.g. if i have the display casing from a samsung early 2008 macbook pro, would this be compatible with the 2006 or 2007 samsung display housing?)
i have found a case for an older samsung http://www.welovemacs.com/9227221.html and chimei here

There is a service that I have yet to try but it looks pretty reliable and they service macs in virtually every way possible. Go to macservice.com and just follow the steps and choose what you want to repair. For MacBook pro you an get the display housing replaced for about $200, I know that is a bit steep but it's the easiest way to get it repaired. If you do use it let me know how you liked it.

  • New macbook pro battery for late 2008 macbook pro dies fast.

I have a late 2008 macbook pro 2.4 HGz Intet Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of ram. I've had it since 2009 and just got a new battery, as the old one finally gave up. That being said, the new battery dies quite fast and I'm not sure why. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thank you

Only problem is that maybe the battery you were sold was manufactured around the same time as the Mac. And LiPo batteries die because of old age as well as use. Take it out and carefully examine all markings, especially anything that can date when it was made, like copyrights or such.
With that evidence you can go back and demand a refund.

  • 2008 Macbook Pro wont print through Airport Extreme

    Hi,
We recently got an airport extreme and have our printer (Epson Stylus NX400) plugged into the USB port. My computer (2009 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) will print wirelessly fine but hers (early 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.5.8) will not. Plugged in it will print just fine but it is a hastle to unplug the printer from the airport and plug it into her computer any time she wants to print. When she tries to print wirelessly, the print command goes through but then doesn't show up on the print que. The only difference I see between our computers when we print is hers pulls up some information from Epson regarding ink levels when plugged into the printer. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

Have you guys tried updating to 10.4.6
I believe they addressed some airport issues in the update.
Also you could download the firmware update

But I believe that just updates your firmware to work with boot camp and doesn't really do anything else.

  • Sata ll or sata lll for a 2008 macbook pro?

Just wondering about compatibility. I see both versions available. My macbook pro is a 4,1 model from spring 2008.
Thinking of the seagate momentus to replace my six year old hitachi. 7200 rpm. 16mb cache. The price is right, about 65 euros. And I've read user reports on amazon.fr that the disk runs quiet. Just getting a little nervous about all my work on a six year old disk. Think to upgrade withiin about a year to a new computer. Maybe an imac.
I am tempted by the ssd drives, but not sure it's worth the bucks right now on this six year old computer.
Any recommendations for a case so I can clone my current drive to the new one?
    Ok. thanks in advance...

Youre riding the edge of disaster, you must must have external backups of your data.   Nobody should be in that position ever.  Thats just a tragedy in wait.
SATA III,   however avoid the Seagate, unless price is a very serious concern, the reliable Hitachi is not really anymore expensive

yes, there are very few reliable HD enclosures, however JUST to clone the data, any cheap HD enclosure is fine.

When I plug a PNY 8Gb USB thumb drive, nothing happens and the MacBook Pro can't see it. Is there something I need to do?

If you are looking for it in Desktop, it's normal that you feel like your Mac doesn't detect it. By default, OS X doesn't show external drives in Desktop, so you have to access to them from Finder. To do it, open a Finder window and choose your external drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
If you want to show the external disk in Desktop, open a Finder window, go to the Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and mark "External drives"

  • SSD for Late 2008 Macbook Pro 15

    Hi all,
I'm looking to upgrade my old Macbook Pro 15, late 2008 model and would like to ask for recommendations from anyone with experience here.  I'd like to get a 500GB range SSD. Both link speed and negotiated link speed are 3, which I think is SATA III correct?  Any recommendations on the optimum drive that will boost performance for this setup?
    Thanks in advance!!

A 500 GB SSD will be $250-300. Why would you throw that kind of money to such an old machine which is very underpowered by today's standards?

  • External desktop drives for early 2008 Mac Pro: USB 2.0 or 3.0 question

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 (OS 10.6.8).
I currently have a 1 TB Fantom Drive with USB 2.0 that I use for the Time Machine. I want to get the second external drive to use as a boot drive so I can install & boot from Mountain Lion to use Maya 2014 3D application software that requires the Mountain Lion OS. For all other applications, I want to stick with Snow Leopard (10.6.8), which works well for me.
Most of the searches I've done for external drives have USB 3.0. Some have USB 3.0/2.0.
    Questions:
    1. Will one of the USB 3.0-only external drives work with my early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1, which is only equipped for USB 2.0? If so, would I need some sort of adapter? (I realize that the speed would still be USB 2.0 speed.)
    2. Or do I need to get the USB 3.0/2.0 external drive (which is more expensive)? I am assuming this would not require any adapter.
    3. Will I be able to boot from the external drive with Mountain Lion?
Thanks for any help with this.
    S

First, many thanks to both Grant Bennet-Alder and The hatter for their fast responses to my questions. I really appreciate this information. Based on your suggestions I did some research in order to better understand the proposed solutions.
    Grant Bennet-Alder wrote:
You can add a PCIe card to get these interfaces:
    eSATA
    USB-3
    1. Does one need to get a separate PCIe card for each interface, or is there one PCIe card for multiple interfaces?
    The hatter wrote:
Installing or cloning OS X should be done on SATA II drive bay or external and then moved to the PCIe - depends what card you buy, and some issues are with arrays (no need for system on one).
    2. I went to http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/faq/, which says, "By default, a single 3 Gb/s Serial ATA -- sometimes referred to as SATA 2.0 or SATA II -- hard drive is installed in the first of four bays for all models." I interpret that to mean that SATA II is a in the first bay located on my internal hard drive. Can I create a partition here and install Mountain Lion as a separate system, and then move it to a PCIe SSD?
    3. Or, can I install it on my external Falcon Drive (which has a Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table, and which, I believe means it is not a bootable drive). Following that installation could I then move it to the PCIe SSD and boot Mountain Lion from there?
    4. Or, if partitioning is an option, can I just clone it to the Falcon Drive for backup?
My apologies for my ignorance. This is not my forte. Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Clean Install of Lion on SSD For Brand New Macbook Pro

I'm considering purchasing the base model of the current 13" Macbook Pro.  If I do, I'm planning on purchasing an SSD (most likely a Crucial model) and installing it.  My question is, before installing the SSD, do I need to format the SSD?  Additionally, am I able to simply install the SSD and then install Lion through the internet recovery option?  Finally, can I do all of this before ever turning the Macbook Pro on with the shipped HDD?  Or do I need to turn it on once just to register the OS and the iLife Suite to me so that I will be able to redownload them to the new SSD?  Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's an answer for you.
Buy an external usb enclosure. About $10.
Install your new SSD in that enclosure.
Open disk utility and format/erase your SSD using MAC OS Extended Journaled.
Once that's done, open Carbon Copy (free download if you don't have it).
Clone your old drive to your new drive.  You will get a pop up message saying that your new drive doesn't have a Lion Recovery Partition.  Create one using Carbon Copy then proceed with the clone.
After all is done, take out your old hard drive and install your new SSD in your Macbook.
Install your old drive to your external enclosure for back up purposes.
Turn on your Macbook and you're done.
