Lion tore apart my digital audio!

Hi everyone,
i have just upgrade my system to 10.7.2 from 10.6.7 and everything work fine except my audio thru optical output. I have pluged to my mac mini's optical sound output and my problem now is that, when I play EVERY MOVIE it works fine the first time, then something happens and no other sounds play.. no itunes, no standard stereo movies ect..
any solution to fix it?
thanks in advance

Which card do you have exactly? Audigy 2 NS isn't a valid product name, do you mean Audigy 2 ZS or Audigy 2 NX (external)? It sounds like you have an Audigy 2 NX as you referred to an optical input (but that there's no coaxial input, like there would be on the dri'vebay from an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum or Platinum Pro kit).
If you have the Audigy 2 NX then no, unfortunately, this isn't possible, as the device is not capable of decoding the signal from an external source.

You can output audio thru HDMI, with appropriate adapter.
You can use additional cheap external usb audio for monitoring.

  • No digital audio out since Mountain Lion install

MacMini 2009.  Digital audio out was working fine with Lion.  Installed ML from scratch (had unrepairable filesystem).  No digital out since.
During install I migrated from a time machine disk which installed SoundFlower.  I've since removed SoundFlower.
Internal speakers work with nothing plugged in.  Headphones work.  Digital out doesn't.  Sound Preferences has only a single output device that changes depending on what is plugged in.  That is, Internal Speakers does NOT show when headphone or digital out is connected.
Have reset PRAM and rebooted several times.  Deleted sound preference file.
Audio MIDI setup defaults to 44100hz "2ch-24bit Integer".  If I change it to "Encoded Digital Audio" then Play in iTunes does not move the position indicator - ie looks like it is still paused.

I've the same problem but i don't realy understand how you have fixed it. It's my first macbook so i try to understand everything.
At my mac there are also ? In the places of adressbook and ichat, and i couldn't find imessage/message.
    Please help me
I hope you understand my bad english, i'm from the netherlands.

My MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.2, only audio on the headset, and speaker mute. With Windows, the audio works in speaker and headphone jack. What is the problem? What's the solution?

There is probably a red light on inside your headphone port, indicating that the analog/digital switch in there is stuck in the digital position. Insert a headphone plug and wigle it around, especially in the horizontal plane, as you insert and remove it several times. This will usually unstick the switch and restore normal operation. If it doesn't, the machine will need to be repaired.
This has been a fairly common problem, but in most cases it is easily cured as described above.

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

  • Won't Change Back to Regular Audio After Setting "Encoded Digital Audio"

I have a first generation Mac Pro, and I've just recently upgraded to Lion. I used to play a fair bit of DVDs on the computer, but recently I've slacked off doing that. Today I popped in a DVD to play and then opened DVD Player up. Everything worked fine as it was supposed to. I've got the DVD player set to send digital audio out so I can get surround sound through my receiver. When I quit DVD player I don't get sound anymore through the optical out unless it's encoded digital audio. I've had that problem before, and to solve it I'd go to Audio Midi Setup and change the format to what it was prior to being set to "Encoded Digital Audio" by DVD Player. However, now with the upgrade to Lion it will not switch back. The option to do it is there, and I can click on 16, 20, or 24bit audio all day long and I won't get audio output from that port unless I restart the computer.
This is obviously a system bug that needs to be reported to Apple if they aren't aware of it already, but what I'm wanting to know is how can I avoid restarting to get audio back? Restarting Core Audio doesn't do the trick as I've already tried that.

From the iPod's Main Menu choose Videos -> Settings and make sure TV Out is set to Off.
Otherwise, try a hard reset as well.  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Mountain Lion Fixed 24/192 digital out or still 24/96?

Seems running Windows on a Mac the chip set puts out 24/192 audio. If that is true, has Mountain Lion "fixed" this issue? If the hardware is capable of 24/192, why handicap it ?! Anyone with information on Mac digital audio output with Mountain Lion? Thanks in advance. Actually running 10.7.4, not 10.6.8...update profile needed...

I am running Mountain Lion on Mac Pro (early 2009) and the Audio MIDI Setup does not allow more than 24/96 for both Toslink and USB to my DAC - but it may be different on your machine.

  • HT2844 iMac 27"(late 2009), Audio in/Optical digital audio out port, stopped recognizing my new Bose speaker system, previously working...

    Hello,
My iMac 27"(late 2009), Audio in/Optical digital audio out port, stopped recognizing my new Bose speaker system, previously working through that port. I tested the speaker system through my iPhone, and it works fine. I hooked it up to the Headphone out/Optical digital audio in port, and it works through that port also. I did a computer restart, I also checked all wiring and did a system repair on the computer. I also restarted the computer in mode where I could use the system utility, and the computer still did not correct the matter, and it reported everything as being "ok". I wented into "sound", through system preferences, and the computer does not recognize anything I plug into the Audio in/Optical digital audio out port. When I plug the speaker sysytem into the headphone out/optical digital audio out port, it does recognize the Bose speaker system as being "headphones".
Reading through a lot of forums, I hear everything from compatibility, to the port being stuck, and on and on. Since the port was working before, and just quit working one day, I wonder if there is a capacitor or fuse or some type of similar thing is blown, and causing the port to be unfunctionable. Maybe the port went bad, but before this time, I had never used it, and the computer does not move around, and I never plug in and pull wiring out unless needing to, and that being rare.
Here is a link to Costco, where I bought the system, and the exact system I have, if this is any help:  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku= A4092931&ST=pla&dgc=ST&cid=262075&lid=4742361&acd=1230980794501410
By the way, I am running OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5). I upgraded to Mavericks about a month ago, and expeirienced a number of issues, and had to take my iMac into Apple. Talking with the tech, I decided to wait for a while more before I upgraded to Mavericks. I try and keep the computer maintained.
If any of you have any ideas regadrding wear and tear, and fix I can do, etc., besides having to take my computer into Apple? Thank you, and potentially all of you, for your time and effort in helping me with this issue. Thank you kindly.
    davE

Okay, davE, first, you have posted in the "Mac Pro" forum (not Macbook Pro), so we can't be super helpful
but we help you. First, hold down the Option key while clicking on the speaker icon at the top of your screen. This should show you all the inputs and outputs you have. you could check in "About this Mac" then "More info" to see whatever's recognized. Then, maybe, fire up Audio MIDI. your speaker system should show up there. something might have gotten set incorrectly. You can test it there.  I guess you are using the good ol' analog cable for connection, and it works on your iPhone, so the cable isn't bad.  You could try this. it 's an adapter which might solve your problem

depending on which model of Bose speaker you have, you might try doing a product reset
turn off speakers...unplug power cord from outlet...wait 1 minute..plug cord into outlet..turn on speakers..
    \\turning off automatic standby||
press and hold top of control pod for 6 seconds until you hear 2 tones that go from high to low
other than that ,I  don't know

  • Can't output Digital Audio in Windows 7 (Macbook Air 2011).

    Hi All,
I'm using my MBA 2011 to play 3D Blurays Movies.
    The problem is...
    > Lion works fine (with HDMI audio) but i can't play 3D Blurays in LION, just 2D Blurays. [I can send...DTS/DOLBY etc etc to my RECEIVER with no problems using the "Moshi mini DP to HDMI adapter".]
    > In Windows i can play 3D Blurays (using Power DVD, Corel Win DvD; Arcsoft total media...etc) but i can't use the mini DP digital Audio function as in Lion...(So i think i need a better support driver here....from Intel, Apple or
In the device manager i have an "Intel (R) graphics audio" """device""", but i don't have it listed as a device/extrernal-speaker in Windows interface, i currently have..."just the cirrus logic internal speakersdriver" and the "cirrus logic headphones analog output".
So, anyone know how to output DIGITAL audio using Windows 7 bootcamp?
    Best Regards,
    Sebastian.

Thanks for your comments. To answer your question theologos, the difference in battery life is huge. I only ran down the full batery in windows and it lasts for a little over 3 hours, depending on how you use it. Fully charged, OS X says I have a little over 7 hours to run although I've never tried to see if it actually gets that much. It seems to last a lot though. I almost never use OS X because I need to do run a lot of windows programs and a lot of statistics in Excel which is disabled by microsoft on office 2011 for mac. Heat levels in windows are acceptable. For general tasks CPU temperature stays below 70 degrees and the laptop is only mildly warm. Even playing starcraft 2 on full settings doesn't cause it to heat up to unomfortable levels.
I realise that graphics switching is disabled in Windows and I hate Apple for it, I know they are doing it on purpose. This is not a question of which OS is better, they both have their merits. However, my guess is this is done via the bootcamp drivers for windows. Since the AMD Radeon 6750 M has graphics switching and is able to perform it with no probs on other non-mac windows laptops I was wondering whether I could remove all the apple graphics drivers and install the default AMD ones. I'm specifically referring to the catalyst driver ackage off the AMD website for this graphics card. If the hardware is there and there are drivers for windows why would it not work on a Mac? If I were to format the system and simply install Windows how would the macbook pro know to keep the integrated graphics disabled? My worry is that if I install the AMD drivers and remove some of the bootcamp ones this might screw up bootcamp if it doesn't recognize them. Anyone tried to do this with any success?

  • MBA 2011 - Bootcamp "Digital Audio"

    Hi,
Anyone of you (Users of Macbook Air) could export DIGITAL AUDIO when using Bootcamp ??? (with Windows 7 in my case) [I mean...using DisplayPort/Thunderbolt interface].
I can't output Digital audio when using bootcamp and i wanted to know if all have the same problem.
In that case, i think we need a fix in Apple's "Windows Support Software"
So help me using the feedback please.

Please i still need help with this.
I can play BLU-RAYS and high bitrate mkvs with no problem in Windows, but i really need to output 5.1 digital audio...
In lion i can play some MKVs but can't play high bitrate blu-rays because its very slow.

  • Digital Audio not working on Satellite A505 S6012

My digital audio stopped working suddenly.  I use HDMI to send the video out of my laptop to my projector.  I had been successfully using, for over a year, a digital audio cable in the headphone (SP/DIF) jack to output the sound to my home receiver.  The default audio set in the control panel is Realtek Digital Audio.
If I set the output to speakers and plug headphones in the jack, I get sound.  If I set the output to Realtek Digital Audio and plug the digital audio cable in, I get no sound.  I've tried new cables, changing the input to a different conection on my receiver, reinstalling the Realtek driver, and, as a last resort, completely recovering my laptop to the factory setting.  Digital Audio still does not work.
Any suggestions?  This is the main way we watch movies in my home.

  • How to connect a APExpress to a digital audio console

I have a Yamaha M7CL digital audio console that has an Ethernet connection. I want to control the desk wirelessly using the APExpress. I know how to do it with a Linksys or Netgear router. With those I need to plucg into one of the 4 LAN ports. Not the WAN. And it works great. Since the APEx has only one port (LAN or WAN?) How can I make it work. The console has Network settings that can be changed but I think my issue is that the port on the APE is looking for internet. I'm not interested in using this set up to surf the web I only trying to connect the 2 and wirelessly connect with my laptop. With all the different settings I have no idea where to begin. Can anyone give me a clue. Thanks.

Hello steviee7. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In order for the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port to perform as a "LAN" port so that the Yamaha can access the network/Internet, it would need to be reconfigured as one of the following:
For both the 802.11b/g and 802.11n versions of the AX:
o As as relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
    For the 802.11n version only:
o As an extender of a wireless network created by another 802.11n AirPort or Time Capsule.
o As a wireless Ethernet bridge (ProxySTA).

  • Digital Audio output for W series - Alternatives

There's a thread talking about the displayport does not have audio-output.  Its true and some people get victimized by ill-trained sales people who think their displayport is standard.  There's no literature on Lenovo website warning users about the audio issue either - such thread is closed with the fact that (some) other manufacturers in the same period does have have audio either and Lenovo think they should be in the same boat.
Let's not go into the blamish again, but discuss what we can do with existing options with alternative digital audio out and line-in that the W series really really missed.
We have (1) mini-dock and (2) USB soundcard listed as options
I currently use a USB DAC (digital to analog) system and it do really good in terms of stereo music enjoyment.  However my particular system does not have digital manupilated sound like 3-D surround or multi-channel output and not suprisely, laptop USB generally produce greater latency than desktop USB ports.
Besides USB, we have 1394 and express card 34 as expansion options.
What's your setup for digital audio out?  Anyone know any internal soundcard that fits the slots of Wireless USB/Turbo memory PCI ports that all W-series have?

    Other alternatives include
I know on mackbooks I've seen firewire used as an input for a Weiss Dac if you're into two channel audio.  Do any reiceivers take firewire as an input for hometheater?  Has anyone tested Firewire outputs on their W series?  I'm told that firewire is sometimes preferable to USB, I'm not sure why this would be, can USB support passthrough of DTS encoded signals?
In the case that firewire works and you Do not have a firewire source, maybe something like this would be of value  It converts firewire to digital coaxial s/pdif and allows passthrough of DTS and AC3.
    http://www.m-audio.com/images/global/manuals/FireWire-Audiophile_Manual.pdf
As I'm into audio the critical thing here (and what you're paying for when you purchase blue-ray, is maintaining the digital information from the disk in an unconverted form.  You want a direct bit pass through, and you want as little jitter introduced to the signal as possible.  You most certainly don't want the sound card getting in the way, Digtital to Analog converting and then reverse packaging it up and putting it out over the soundcard digital out.  My problem is I'm not familiar enough with computer audio to know how exactly the sounds is transmitted from your blue ray drive to the digital interface you've chosen.
Anyone know why USB digital out would not be a prefered method?

  • I'm using MAM-A blank CD-R for digital audio and I would like to know which speed do I set to so I can get the best sound? Thanks Joe

When making new digital audio cd's which burn speed is best used with MAM-A 74min/650mb digital audio CD-R's?Thanks Joe

In theory, the slowest speed should result in the most accurate duplication (best sound).  This will take much longer than if you were to use use faster speeds and whether that in practical terms is necessary is debatable.  Remember, the quality of the disc will be no better than the source material.
    Ciao.
PS:  You may wish to experiment by making disks at different speeds and listen to them if can detect difference between them.
