Lion update 10.7.5 crashed my Mac Pro

After completion of the 10.7.5 update from the Software updater, my Mac Pro would not boot from the 10.7.5 startup drive.  I have 4 hard drives in the machine.  A 1TB startup disk running Lion, two 1.5TB drives in a mirrored RAID config with OS X Snow Leopard (the last Apple OS that would allow a RAID'd startup drive), and a 3TB disk configured as a Time Machine backing up the other three drives.  I've been wrestling the problem for over a week now.  So far I've observed:
I do not think its a bad hard disk:
I bought a new 1TB Seagate drive to replace the failed 1TB Western Digital thinking I had a hardware problem.  The Seagate loaded Lion 10.7 fine and booted fine, until downloading the 10.7.5 update from the "Software Update" in System Preferences.  Same result.  Dead computer as soon as the install completed and attempted to boot.  The crash screen is solid grey with a text warning in the middle that reads something like hit a key to try again.  It's an infinite loop from there...multiple failed boots leading to "hit a key to try again."
Curious thing, I can use the failed drive, just not as a startup disk:
So I pulled the Lion drive and booted from my old RAID'd pair running Snow Leopard.  Ran great, except of course all the applications that no longer run in Snow Leopard etc.  I set Snow Leopard as the startup disk, and rebooted with the Lion drive pushed back in.  System booted fine into Snow Leopard and I could see the Lion drive, open it, move files around etc.
Mountain Lion didn't work either:
Then I thought, well, I wanted to move to Mountain Lion anyhow, no time better than now!  I formatted the Seagate that had the bad 10.7.5, and installed a fresh copy of Mountain Lion.  Guess what?  Same result.  Infinite loop of grey screen of death.  But like before, if I booted into Snow Leopard, I can look into the Mountain Lion disk like I could with Lion 10.7.5.
Stuck with 10.7.4:
Next step was another format of the Seagate.  Re-installed Lion 10.7, but this time only updated it to 10.7.4 (vice 10.7.5).  Now I'm going through all the pain of restoring with Time Machine, reconfiguring software, and typing in keys.
The final situation is still worse than I was before I started:
Somewhere along the line, bluetooth stopped working ("bluetooth not available"), even after trying a SMC reset.  Also, I think mutliple initializations of my apple ID in the cloud resulted in password insanity on our iPhones and iPad...even after typing in a password, they only seem to work for a day before I get another pop up on my iPhone that my passord is wrong.
Maybe the "incremental" 10.7.5 will work?
Apple released the 10.7.5 update on 19 Sep 12.  This is the update that caused all this pain.  I noticed there is an incremental update to 10.7.5 released 4 Oct 12.  Does anyone know if it will fix all this?  I'm not to excited about pushing the "I believe" button again...
Frustrated in the Corn Fields,
Jeff Brown

I have had exactly the same problem on my older 17" MBP. (I think its a 2009) Upgraded from 10.7.3 >> 10.7.5 necessary to synch with Iphone etc and on powerup you simply get the screen "You will need to hold down the power button....
Formated, Re-installed and PRAM's all to no avail.
Finally downloaded Mountain Lion and created Boot USB, again performed clean install, this time 1/2 way through the installation (Im guessing after it has created the rescuse sector and re-boots) it came up with Grey Screen - Computer needs to re-boot itself.
Was able to continue the installation however whenever it booted up it would come up with the same grey screen - computer needs to re-start....
Now after 3 days I have returned to Lion 10.7.3 frustrated and £13.xx out of pocket, unable to synch with Iphone
Grrrrrrrr

  • Anyone have a solution to why Illustrator CC crashes on Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8?

Anyone have a solution to why Illustrator CC crashes on Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8?

We recently (yesterday) upgraded our Adobe apps to CC versions. InDesign, Photoshop and Bridge all run perfectly. Illustrator crashes at startup. Tried launching it from Administrator account and it crashes. I have disabled fonts except the bare minimum, no success. If it would launch, then I might be able to narrow it down to an incompatible print driver, but it has to actually be running first. We use no third party plugins with it, so I doubt that is the issue.

  • TS2951 Is there a way to make a dvd Boot Start Up Copy for Lion 7.4.1 ? on a MAC PRO 2011

    Hello,
Is there a way to make a dvd Boot Start Up Copy for Lion 7.4.1 ? on a MAC PRO 2011 ? I only have the Newest
Lion Thumb Drive 7.0 and will not allow me to ever Reinstall my MAC.  Which I like to do from time to time....
Is the Thumb Drive Suppose to reinstall the entire computer or just upgrade ?  Apple Store does not know what
level each customer is at so the Thumb Drives must Totally Start from Scratch.
It worked Once in Nov a Month after I Bought the MAC PRO in 2011 by customer care telling me to Hold down the Option Key When I Turn on the MAC ?  I hope That is Correct.
SO WHAT I AM REALLY WANTING TO KNOW ABOUT MACS IS CAN YOU MAKE A BOOT DVD and NOT with Time Machine or an External Hard Drive.

  • LR 5.6 crashes my Mac Pro

Ever since upgrading to LR 5.6 it appears to crash my mac pro after editing a few photos...I have tried all the suggested fixes of creating a new catalog and re-importing files, reinstalling LR, etc...still have the same issue. Baffled as to what to do.  Has anyone had this issue and found a fix or know what might be causing the problem?  If I can't solve this quickly Im going to need to move to another photo editor...dont have time to be Adobe's QA lab....

What would help would be if you can tell us if it's always the same kind of images or edits resulting in the crasher.
    Thanks,

  • Mountain Lion install crash on Mac Pro

    Hi,
Just started the install on my Early 2008 Mac Pro and it's completely crashed the system. The app downloaded fine and ran OK in 10.7 doing the setup and then tried to reboot. As soon as it rebooted I get a Kernel Panic and the 'Please Power Off your System'.
I've managed to get into Recovery Mode and am going to restore from Time Machine and try again but has anyone else had this?
There were no warnings or errors before the kernel panic at all.......
    Thanks,

    This worked for me....
    Restart
During restart, hold Ctrl + Command + P + R to reset the PRAM
After this, the computer will flash and reboot again and should boot into the Mountain Lion Installer.
    Good luck.

  • Photoshop CS2 Trial Install Crash on Mac Pro

Well, I've seen the benchmark sites running Photoshop CS2 on a Mac Pro, but when I try to install the trial version, it crashs during the install process. I tried re-installing Mac OS X and re-installing Photoshop first thing, but with the same result.
A search only brought up a previously known issue with QuickTime 7.1, but the fix was to update to 7.1.1 - since my install has QT 7.1.2 this doesn't seem applicable.
Doom3 is the only other Rosetta app I've tried, and it runs fine - heck, I didn't even initially realize that the demo is the PPC-only version.
Has anyone else gotten it successfully installed? I don't want to spring out the cash for the full thing until I know it works (and I want to test out the Kodak Digital ROC plug-in to make sure it works as well.)
(I'm asking here since my lack of search results leads me to think it might be Mac Pro specific.)
    Take care,
    P.M.
    Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   (2.66/160GB/7300GT/2GB/BT + 250GB PATA drive)

    This worked for me....
    Restart
During restart, hold Ctrl + Command + P + R to reset the PRAM
After this, the computer will flash and reboot again and should boot into the Mountain Lion Installer.
    Good luck.

  • Crashes with Mac Pro and Wacom Cintiq?

Anyone else here running a Mac Pro with a Wacom Cintiq? I am having issues with this configuration since I updated to 10.5.3. Mac OS X would crash while I am using the Cintiq.
I have an 8-Core Mac Pro (Early 2008) with the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB GDDR3 memory (two dual-link DVI). I got a Wacom Cintiq 20WSX and I am running it as a secondary display with a 30" Apple Cinema Display. I mainly use Adobe Flash CS3 to do animation.
I was able to run with this set up for a month trouble-free until I noticed it crashing (gray curtain of death) recently. That was when I updated to 10.5.3.
I tried to downgrade back to 10.5.1 and found that the set up runs more stable with that version. However, I have some apps (such as Aperture 2) that I need to run, hence my persistence in running under 10.5.3, or 10.5.4 even.
I have the latest Wacom Tablet driver installed, by the way.
I just wanted to know if anyone else have this same set up but is having no issues. I would love to know what settings they are using that makes their setup trouble free. Or am I out of luck and should just revert back to 10.5.1?
    Thanks.

Hey, hopfully anyone here could possible help me with this...
I have a MBP and when I bought a Wacom Cintiq half a year ago, Wacom told me already that there are problems with the NVIDIA 8600M GT. At the beginning everything run normal. Whenever I used the Cintiq to draw or just as a second monitor. BUT whenever I didn't connect it to my MBP my Intuos was not recognized (the tablet prefs where not in the System Preferences). As soon as I plug in the Cintiq and would un-plug it right after, the Intuos is recongized (and the Wacom prefs where in the System Preferences). When I installed the latest Wacom software (I un-installed the old one before), it seemed to work. I started my computer and it recognized the Intuos straight and the Wacom prefs, YES! BUT since yesterday, I believe the first time I used the Cintiq since I installed the new Wacom drivers, the same problem appeared again. In my System Preferences I get the message, "A USB tablet was not found when the system started....". This is driving me insane, to basically need a second monitor to plug in first in order to use my tablet?!?!?! This way I am not able to use my tablet when I am mobile and that is a big handicap....
    Thanks.

  • Random app crashes on Mac Pro

When I got the mac pro I notice when copying my data from my mac g4 quicksilver over the linksys router that the finder was crashing on the new mac pro 2.66 I figured it might be my linksys router that was 2 yrs old so I bought an external drive copied all my data that went fine but when I was importing my itunes and iphoto catalog would crash so would quicktime and system preference so I decided to format the 250 gig hard drive zero out data and started over even though disk utility said the hd was fine thinkg that there might be something wrong with the factory install. I also checked the memory and added another 1 gig of apple memory.
So I started over and the same problem continues. Last night I ran the diagnostic test from cd disk 1 by holding down d on the keyboard ran that everything past. I can not update the EFI firmware now either. What gives??? Is anybody having this same problem? I am going to call apple but with all the tests passing I'm afraid there is nothing they will do.

Hmmm… a stab in the dark but why don't you try resetting PRAM and NVRAM…

  • Xbench Crashes on Mac Pro 2009

    Hi,
I was running Xbench (http://www.xbench.com/) on the new Mac Pro to see how it stacked against the old generation and I found it quite weird that it crashed every 1 out of 3-4 times (sometimes even more often). So I've tried running Xbench on my other Macs and it didn't crash at all. I would very much appreciate it if some other people with the new Mac Pro run Xbench and let me know if it crashes for them as well (I just run it without the Disk Test (so it can finish quicker) about 7-8 times).
    Thanks a lot,
    M

    Hi Milen,
since XBench has not been updated in 2.5 years (last version is from 2006) it might simply be possible that it is not compatible with the new Mac Pros.

  • Can't Reinstall OSX Lion on a new HD on my Mac Pro????

I have a Mac Pro Desktop that i bough on ebay and just got a new HD500Gb so I want to use the 500GB HD as my primary HD and use my current 320GB as my secondary. I did the boot sequence by holdin the opt/alt key at start up picked recovery option went to disk utilities wiped it clean got out of DU and got to the instal page with Lion on front chose the hard drive I wanted to install it to which was my New 500GB HD and it asked to be signed in to appstore to validate apple id  signed in it let me agree to terms then when I went to download and install it it said that my apple id did not purchase the a copy of OSX Lion( ah duh ) because I am not original owner,it says that i have to use the apple id that was used to purchase OSX Lion originaly? there is my problem How dow I find out who was the original person who download it in the first place? yes I got it clean fresh install NO problem but now I want to switch hard drives and cant do it!!!
if I recall right OSX Lion didnt come with any Disks so that option is gone, and I am not the original owner that bought the installed copy of OSX Lion that instaled on here now.
So is there any way to find out that info of the original owner and thier apple id or
bypass it cause with out it I cant do Squat!!!!

It does indeed take 1 to 3 days, because a person has to intervene and send you a couple of emails with redemption codes that you will enter to get access to the download.
Once you have downloaded Lion, your Apple-ID "Purchases" page will evermore show Lion as Purchased and re-downloadable, like this one:

  • Premiere CC and Media Encoder crashing new Mac Pro

Since installing CC on my new Mac Pro (Late 2013) Premiere and Adobe Media Encoder have been continually crashing my system.
At first, my comp would freeze and I'd have to hard restart, then it switched to rebooting on in's own. This would happen 10-20 times a day while editing.
This began shortly after I synced settings from a previous version of PP but since I've installed new RAM; reinstalled CC/PP; reformatted my HDD and reinstalled Mavericks, CC, PP; and have not synced my settings. I've also tried editing multiple projects of different sizes with different media types -- all are experiencing the same problems.
When I edit the same projects on my MBP, everything works fine.
Recently, I have disabled GPU acceleration in all of my PP projects and that seems to have solved the problem.
My office received 3 Pros at the same time with the same hardware configurations and software -- I am the only one experiencing this problem.
    Here are some specs:
    Late 2013 Mac Pro
    2.7 Ghz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
All drivers, CC, and software is up to date.
So what do I do now?
    Any help is much appreciated!

  • Photoshop CS4 crashes on Mac Pro – log mention "ATIRadeonX1000GLDriver" etc.

    Hi!
Since switching from Photoshop CS3 to Photoshop CS4 one users here at work started to get stability problems.
He said it happens mostly when ”painting” layer masks.
Mac Pro (first generation) 2.66 GHz
    Mac OS X 10.5.6
    5 GB RAM
    Photoshop CS4 Standard version 11.0.1

Here's another that talks about ”com.apple.HIServices” and other things:

    Any ideas what's causing this?
Is something still remaining from the CS3 installation that's causing conflict? Shall I clear the caches?
    I'm thankful for any suggestions.

  • Surprise! Mountain Lion only available as a download? Mac Pro 3,1 Early 2008

Just purchased Mountain Lion to upgrade one of my Mac Pro's 3,1 Early 2008 hoping to get the CD but it seems like it's only available as a download. Is that accurate? Did I miss a link to get the actual physical item? If the download version happens to be the only one available, how should I work around this, given that I would like to upgrade my 2 Mac Pro's and probably my work MacBook Pro? Help please...

I have made backup installers of Lion through Mavericks on flash drives using Lion DiskMaker, which BTW is now called DiskMakerX.  It works really well. Before creating the flash drive installer, don't immediately run the "Install OS X Mountain Lion" application, which you will find in your Applications folder: save a copy of it to another location. After ML is installed, the install application gets sent to the cornfield (thanks, Apple), so you will need a backup copy of it.
For Yosemite, I followed these instructions to make a flash drive installer: http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/16/make-os-x-yosemite-boot-install-drive/. I'm not sure if DiskMakerX works with Yosemite. Anyone else know?
