Lion, versions, restore and iDisk

I've been working extensively in Lion for about a month, writing a novel.  Mostly I love the interface and workspace improvements.  However, recently I lost work in a scary way, at least twice, while moving from my laptop to my desktop and back.  This transition has worked seamlessly for several years for writing projects, with all of my work and source files stored on iDisk and synced to both Macs.  I always make sure to sync before switching computers. I think the problem must have something to do with the "version" and "restore" functions of Lion.  Let me explain the main apps I use, all of which are the latest version:
Preview.  I have a library of approx. 1000 e-book source materials, most of which I have converted to PDF so that I can view them all in Preview.  I have one workspace dedicated to having several sources open in Preview, and I annotate them with bookmarks and highlights.
Pages.  I maintain my workfiles in Pages.  I usually have several Pages windows open at a time, in a workspace they share with StoryMill.
StoryMill.  The actual pieces of the novel are stored and arranged in StoryMill, basically a specialized filesystem/database for writers.  This is a Mariner Software app, for which they have not released a Lion update.  However, it mostly works fine with their latest Snow Leopard version.  I wouldn't be complaining about problems with a non-Lionized app, if I weren't having exactly the same problems with the two native Apple apps above.
Firefox.  Obviously, for any research I don't have in my own library.  I save tab groups and sync Firefox using its own native sync.
The main problem that I have is - when Lion restores my workspaces and windows, it seems to restore the last version I used on THAT MAC, rather than going to the actual document on the iDisk.  This is apparently true whether I'm on the laptop or the desktop, and the desktop is always online.  However, I did not realize that it was doing this, so a couple of times I began working after transitioning from one computer to the other, and did a significant amount of work in the Pages files before I went "woah, what happened to the stuff I did last night?"  By this time, Lion had already done whatever it does behind the scenes with versions, and I could not figure out any way to get the lost work from the previous file back without dumping the new work I'd done since.
This also happens with Preview, which like Pages is a native Mac app.  And of course, it is happening with the non-native apps StoryMill and Firefox as well.   Preview only reloads the bookmarks and highlights that were previously created on THAT MAC, even though both Macs are working from the same documents on the same iDisk.  And StoryMill, like Pages, restores whatever I did several days ago.  I realize that the iDisk may not be capable of finishing its sync quickly enough for the other Mac's version to be loaded during the restore process at startup.  However, if that's the case, the apps like Preview and Pages should be declining to re-open the document's window until they can actually access the document, rather than just defaulting to an old version without telling me.  The whole point of the iDisk, and especially the sync function, is to allow moving back and forth seamlessly between two computers.  I know iDisk has always had its flaws, but it only got THIS flaw after Lion.
In sum, giving me a version that Lion automatically saved a couple days ago, without checking against the actual file location and WITHOUT WARNING ME is a very bad idea.  I suspect lots of people are going to lose work in this way if they use iDisk with Lion.  Despite the fact that I love the workspace-restore function, due to my three-workspace-multiple-windows setup, I've had to stop using it because I don't know what it's restoring, or why, and it takes me longer to check each document window to make sure it's the latest version than it would to restore the workspaces manually.
If there is a command line fix to force Lion to check source files on "restore," rather than just defaulting to a local autosaved version, I'd like to know about it.  And, like many people who know how to hit the save button, if there is a command line way to turn off versioning completely until Apple gets the bugs ironed out, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks and good luck with Lion.

Lion was not and is not available from the iTunes Website, perhaps you used the Mac App Store to purchase it?
To restore: reboot your Mac and hold down the command and R keys as soon as you hear the chime. When the recovery manager loads Instal OSX is one of the choices.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Connecting your MacBook Pro and your MacBook Air will be the fastest way, but you have to spend money on cables and adapters (also, your MacBook Pro doesn't support Thunderbolt).
As you have a Time Capsule, one thing you can do is to start your MacBook Pro and make a Time Machine backup. Then, turn on your MacBook Air and set it up. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so select the option to restore the backup from the Time Capsule and be patient. This can take a lot of time if you have to migrate a lot of files

  • HT4859 I have just restored and updated my ipad 2 with the new iOS 6 software resulting in me losing all apps and items i had saved wen i had the  version 5 software. How do i restore my files from icloud if its possible

How do i restore my files back onto my ipad 2 from icloud. I lost all things while updating to iOS 6 software. I can see that all the items are there on my icloud but i cant see the restoring option

    Hi Taunda
When you went through the iOS 6 set up - did you see the option to restore?
When you go through Setup Assistant on a new iOS 5 device, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.
After your device restarts, your settings and accounts are restored and Backup starts downloading your purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, books, Camera Roll, and other content.
Note: You may be prompted to enter the passwords for all accounts enabled on your device. You may also be prompted to enter the password for for any iTunes, iBookstore and App Store accounts for which iCloud Backup is attempting to restore content.
A progress bar will appear underneath the apps that are being downloaded. To prioritize the restore of a specific app, tap its icon. Restore will attempt to download the same version of the app that you had installed previously. If that version is no longer available, the latest version of the app will be restored.

  • Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

My MacBook was not normally booting up. It would turn on, make the Apple startup noise, and the bottom loading bar would progress just a little bit, then my MacBook would shut down. I tried rebooting it many times and the same thing would happen, it would just shut down. Then, I read that I can reset the PRAM (by holding Option+Command+P+R after the Apple startup noise comes). That worked, but now I get a screen that asks me to choose one of the 4 options (see:  http://images.macworld.com/images/article/2012/07/lionrecoveryutilities-289404.j pg). I choose Restore From Time Machine Backup, but it progresses to 17.6% and gets stuck there forever. I tried doing it again, and it got stuck at 17.6% again. That is why I am asking if I should just reinstall Lion, then restore a previous backup on the fresh new Lion?

I installed Lion OS X and Logic Pro won't run. I downloaded the 9.1.5 update: "An Eligible Logic Pro Version Was Not Found in the Applications Folder.  This Update require Logic Pro Version 9.0 or higher".  I have Logic Pro Version 9.1.1 installed.
I even pulled the dmg file into the Logic Studio folder in my applications directory and it still does not recognize it.  What do I do now?

    Niel:  Thanks.
For others benefit, here is what happened.
I had installed Logic Studio 9.1 some time ago.......not knowing what all the programs were nor what they did, I created a "Logic Studio" subfolder in my applications folder and put all Logic Studio programs into it so I'd know where they were and could review each at my leisure over time.
My assumption now is that when the updater looks for the Logic Pro program, it looks only in the applications folder.  It seems lame that it would not also look in the subfolders of the applications folder, but that apparently IS the way it works.  Because my Logic Pro program was located in the "Logic Studio" subfolder, the updater just didn't see it..hence the error message I received when I tried to update.
Solution:  I moved all the Logic Studio programs out of the subfolder and now they reside in the applications folder. Ran the 9.1.5 updater and it worked like a charm.

  • OS X Lion Version 10.7.5 and after new hard drive I have lost iPhoto, iMovie, etc.

I have the OS X Lion version 10.7.5 and after a new hard drive I have lost iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band etc. I have tried the re-install of the OS X Lion and checking the app store under 'purchases' but none of these options were successful.
When I click on iPhoto in the App Store, it says that it cannot update because version 10.9 is required (I tried to transfer iPhoto from my brothers computer but he has a newer laptop which means I cant open it whcih is why it says 'update' but have deleted it now). When I go to iMovie on the App Store, it says I need to pay but the only reason I dont want to do that is that it origionally came on the computer and after paying Apple to install a new hard drive I dont want to have to pay for all the apps that origionally come on it.
    Can someone please help

Then you will need the Original System Reinstall DVD discs that came with the system to reinstall the iLife suite of apps then you can update them from the Mac app store or through Software Update.
Those discs came in the box the computer came in. Hopefully you still have the box and those discs.

Restoring previous backup will NOT revert to the older version of iOS.
    Downgrading iOS is not allowed.
    What are your problems?
Maybe if you list them here we can help you to fix them.

Someone tried to email me a video that is larger than 10.8 MB, and it bounced back to her.   I have IMAC G5, Lion, Version 10.7.4

Some ISPs impose email attachment limits and that is quite often 10 mb, some have other maximums. Additionally, not all users have fast connections, so someone may not appreciate getting large attachments. It is usually recommended to upload videos you want to share to an online site to share them with others. In your case, your friend should check with her or his ISP to ask about maximums.
FWIW, you need to update your profile. If you are running Lion, you do not have a G5 - those were PPCs and discontinued in 2006 when Intel iMacs were introduced.

    Has iOS8 destroyed my phone?

    Hi vijay294,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you received a restore error while attempting to update to iOS 8 and now you see the Connect to iTunes graphic on your display. In this situation, I would recommend using recovery mode to restore your iPhone. Please use the instructions located in the attached article to complete this process.

  • I can't install last version iOS and can't restore my iphone

When I tried to install iOS 5.1.1, my iPhone crushed. Now I can't install last version iOS and I can't restore, because iTunes asks the last version iOS in order to restore .. Does anyone know how I can restore ?

Did you buy this phone new from an authorized Apple dealer? The only reference I can find for that error message is for a previously jailbroken iPhone.
    Regardless, you can try this:

Update: I see Mende already suggested that. You next step would be to get the iPhone serviced.

If you backed up before the upgrade, restore the backup.
If not you are going to have to erease the disk and install the older OS.
You should back up any data you want before so that it can be restored afterwards.
Is there a version of you CAD program that is Lion compatable? That would be an easier solution.

  • How do I save as with Numbers 2.1 Lion version

ok so I've been a user for about 6 months. Moved to Lion OS X and now the "Save as" option is missing. So if I have a spreadsheet that I want to keep but modify and call something else aka using the "save as" how do I now do this?

    NO, NO and NO !
Save a version doesn't give the ability to change a name. It doesn't open a dialog. This is why there is no ellipsis at the end of the menu item.
It allow us to save the changes applied to a document in the hidden folder folder
“.DocumentRevisions-V100” which exists at the root level of every volume connected to a machine running Lion.
Save… allow us to save a document which was never saved before. The ellipsis means that the feature open a dialog.
Duplicate create a replicate of the current document giving it a default name based of the name of the original minus the extension (.numbers). On a French system a replicate of azerty.numbers is named azerty - copie.
One more time the, good old rule apply : no ellipsis = no dialog.
    If you don't believe me,
create a doc and save it as azerty.numbers.
    Type B2 in cell B2
    Save a Version
remove the contents of the cell B2
    Save a Version
Type OK in the cell B2
    Close the document
    Re open it.
The doc will contain OK in the cell B2 and, if you look at the versions available you will see at least one with OK in B2,
    one with nothing in B2
    one with B2 in B2
If you have an external device, HD or memory stick, copy the document to the external device then open it.
It will contain OK in B2 but will no longer have access to the versions.
Saving a version saves nothing in the doc itself.
What save datas in a doc are :
the initial Save which create the file on disk
    the automatic autosaves
the close action which in fact execute three tasks:
    (1) save the document
    (2) save a version matching the last state
    (3) close the doc.
I put 'save the document' at 1st position but honestly I don't know if the system save the file before saving the late version or if it save the late version before saving the file.
I will try to describe every cases
    (A) open an existing document
    trigger Save a Version
you will not be able to give a new name.
    (B) open an existing document
    trigger Duplicate.
you will get a window entitled oldname - copy
look at the file menu, there is no "Save a Version" item but a "Save…" one
Trigger "Save…" This time you may edit the name and the location.
After that, you will be allowed to trigger Save a Version for both documents but this will add nothing to the docs themselves.
It's really important that it behave this way.
    (a) it would be a bit annoying to send a file to a correspondant with the different intermediate versions embedded.
    (b) Apple failed to deliver the required tools but I built a set of three scripts giving up the ability to extract the versions, even if the main document is corrupted. This way, assuming that you worked during two hours on a doc saving a version every ten minutes, and that two days after Numbers prove to be unable to re-open its own creation (not a rare behavior).
With my script, you will be able to extract the different versions stored in “.DocumentRevisions-V100”
Maybe the more recent will be unreadable but the one before will be readable so you will recover quite all your document.
More, as I never got explanations of the scheme corrupting the files (except when two users try to work simultaneously on a document stored on a network) it's not impossible to have a corrupted main document and a correct 'late version" in the “.DocumentRevisions-V100” folder.
