Lion, VM Fusion, missing Intel processors?....Help!!

I just tried opening VM Fusion for the first time since installing Lion (I ran it on Leopard and Snow Leopard no problem) and it stated that it could not connect? I read some bits in the VM Ware forum that advised I reinstall Fusion which I did, but now I have a message come up saying that my iMac does not have an intel processor??  It definitely has a 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo!!
What do I need to do?................any help would be gratefully received!!
Thank you!

...the version I have is v2 but I have no idea on the build number?...
VMware Fusion Menu, About VMware Fusion.  The build number is in the parenthesis.
...found one post that "suggested" that v2 is not compatible with lion...
VMware's Knowlegebase article says Fusion2 is not compatible with Lion:
If you are running an older version of VMware Fusion, upgrade to VMware Fusion 3.1.3 before upgrading to Lion. Fusion 2.x is incompatible with Lion.
If I have to upgrade and change the partition, I now hae concerns that I will lose my data stored on VM?
You "should not."  But as always, backup, backup, backup, just in case.   Use an imaging program to backup your Windows partition.  (IOW, imagine what you would use to backup and restore in the case of complete hard drive failure and the hard drive is going "thunk, thunk, thunk.")
Also, not trying to take away a potential sale from VMware, but VMware is working on a new version of Fusion that has support for Lion VMs, and it seems close to ready.  (VMware doesn't announce future plans so there is no specific date of release yet.)  If you don't need the capability of Lion VMs and need your Boot Camp VM right now, then go ahead an update to Fusion3.  Otherwise, if you can live with just rebooting to Boot Camp, you may want to consider waiting for the next version of Fusion.

I just purchased $29.99 upgrade disk for Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and ten minutes later recieved an email from apple offering a free upgrade. I have been getting these warnings to upgrade to get to the CLOUD because my email account was going to be lost. Now my computer will not upgrade due to it not having an intel processor. This is ridiculous!! Does anyone know what I can do. This may end my relationship with Apple!!!!

Hello, don't worry, you CAN set up Mail in iCloud at the very least.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993

Everybody is out for the bottom lines these days, careful what you get locked into, especially with Apple moving towards more locked in everything.

  • Nvidia to put more force behind Intel processors

Nvidia, a maker of graphics chips, on Friday announced plans to create a version of its nForce chipset for Intel processor PCs. That's something Nvidia couldn't legally do in the past but can do now, thanks to a broad patent swap with Intel.
A chipset is a PC's nervous system; it stewards data as it travels through the machine.
The patent swap will help give the chipmaker access to a broader swath of the chipset market. Nvidia--along with ATI Technologies, its rival in the market for graphics chips--entered the PC chipset business several years ago in an effort to remain competitive as desktop and notebook PC makers moved to so-called integrated graphics chipsets, which incorporate graphics processors.
"Our view is that it'll give our customers another choice...and a choice from a company with a very good reputation."
    --Chuck Mulloy,
Intel spokesmanDespite Advanced Micro Devices' efforts to encourage companies to build chipsets for its processors, Intel still dominates the PC processor space, with around 82 percent market share.
Intel's large processor share, in turn, bootstraps shipments of other companies' chipsets, making it important for manufacturers such as Nvidia to offer chipsets for both Intel and AMD processors.
But despite the fact that its nForce chipset has been popular among owners of AMD PCs, Nvidia wasn't able to build a version of the chipset for Intel processors until now because it lacked a license for Intel's front-side bus, the pathway for shuttling data back and forth to the processor.
The agreement between the two chipmakers--which spans years, product lines and product generations, the companies said in a statement--also grants Nvidia a multiyear license to the Intel bus, paving the way for an nForce for the latest Pentiums.
Nvidia didn't announce details on when it might begin offering nForce chipsets or which types of PCs the sets would fit. However, when the company does start offering them, it will face stiff competition from Intel--which makes chipsets and motherboards for its own processors--as well as from several other chipset manufacturers. ATI, Nvidia's chief graphics rival, along with Acer Labs, SiS and VIA Technologies, all have agreements with Intel to build chipsets for PCs based on its chips, and thus offer numerous chipsets for Pentium processor PCs.
Intel still enjoys a lion's share of the chipset market and lately has begun viewing chipsets as a much more important part of its business, as it can use them to add new features to PCs and thus boost processors sales. It also aims to make its chips more attractive by bundling them with new elements, such as wireless modules. Centrino, its chip bundle for wireless notebooks, is one such example.
However, Nvidia and other chipset makers have an audience in submarkets, including smaller PC manufacturers and enthusiasts who build their own PCs.
Yet Intel's licensees have proved more aggressive than the chip-making giant, adding new technology more quickly (which has helped them gain the loyalty of enthusiasts) and building speedier graphics into their chipsets. Thus they have able to carve out niches in the business. ATI's Radeon IGP chipset, for example, has been used in numerous notebook PCs.
Still, Intel, which once protected its bus technology much more closely, leading it into legal battles with Via Technologies, regards its agreement with Nvidia as a positive for its customers.
"Our view is that it'll give our customers another choice...and a choice from a company with a very good reputation," said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

I just hope Nvidia doesnt loose focus and work harder for the Intel community, as there biggest thing is graphics chip sets and AMD is the better CPU when it comes to games.
    1) How can a company make chipsets for 2 different companies without making one better than the other?
    2) How can they guarantee that they will not be biased to one platform?
I believe this was a desperate move form Intel because of the announcements from DELL using AMD processors.
Nvidia stated a long time ago that they weren't making chipsets for Intel because they'll have to pay royalties to them.

  • HT1338 I have a canon pixma ip4300 ij printer connected to my mac G5 with an intel processor, i cannot print cd labels since i changed from the old mac OSX  processor.

I have a canon pixma ip4300 ij printer with software to print cd/dvd labels ,i origonaly had it connected to a mac with the old MAC  OSX processor, since i have changed to a mac with MOUNTAIN LION the new intel processor i cannot print the cd labels, i have downloaded software update for the printer but it still reverts back to the old software , can anyone help  thank you   Allan R

So do you have any problems using the iP4300 to print from other applications on 10.8? Just trying to get an idea of your current setup.
I ask because Easy PhotoPrint (EPP) will use your existing printer - there is no need to create a new printer. So when you open the software and select to make a Disc Label, when you get to Step 4 -  Print Settings, the software looks at your existing printer setup to check that you have a printer that will support CD/DVD printing (not all models of Canon inkjet support this).
So with regards to the problem connecting to the iP4300, is the software failing to locate a supporting printer? Can you give me a bit more info as to what is happening when you attempt to print a CD/DVD from EPP?

  • I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have a macbook about 3 years old running leopard. I amwondering ifitwouldbeworth the trouble to install snowleopardand then lion ($60.00) or just buy a new macbook pro ($$$$$$). How does lion perform on an intel core 2 duo processor?

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.

  • 2005 PowerBookG4- Replace Power PC w/ Intel Processor- Possible?

I have a 2005 Powerbook G4, PowerPC, version 10.5.8. I want to know if I can get an Intel (or other) processor to replace the old Power PC, and with that, install the current OS, which I think is now Mountain Lion. In othe words, I want to avail myself of the latest software innovations, and am willing to cobble together the hardware to make that happen, within reason. I like the physical design and architecture of the old G4 and am reluctant to part ways with it. Is this at all possible/practical,, or just too much $$ and hassle? I'm an old school guy who is happy luggin' around an older 'heavy' PC andf can do without tablets asnd such.

Its amazing how many people come in here and always ask this question or same sets of questions over and over again. Can PowerPC G4/G5/G3 be upgradable to Intel? Can I place an Intel processor in my Powerbook??, I don't mean to be rude or come off sounding bad towards those who ask these questions, but its getting rather long in the tooth.
PowerPC Macs, depending on which you have can go as high as 10.5.8 Leopard and thats all. Some can only go as far as 10.4.11, but those would be your low end PowerPC machines.
The best PowerPC Macs for Leopard would be the following:
    G4 MDD dual 1.25/1.42
Any upgraded G4 based machine with a strong graphics card for core image(speeds up video acceleration under OS X) and processor. e.g.: Sawtooth G4 500 upgraded to 2.0Ghz PowerLogix.
All G5's in my opinion should have no problems running Leopard up to and including 10.5.8.
G3's are best suited for Tiger 10.4.11 and Panther 10.3.9(Low low end G3s).
A rule of the thumb: if its PowerPC it can't be upgraded to INTEL, period!
Hope I wasn't too rude.. didn't mean to ruffle any feathers here. Just tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
enough ranting! Now, who's up for installing Leopard on their PowerPC Mac?

Mountain Lion fails to install saying it cannot create the recovery; I had a similar problem with Lion and the Apple Store that helped me resolve it gave me an installable version of Mountain Lion on a flash drive for my inconvenience....is there some trick I am missing or do I need to make an appointment with a genius...

I have the MacIntosh volume and the Boot Camp partition only.  I know that when I installed Lion, I had to go through a whole back-up and recovery of Windows and then re-format the drive.
The tech at the Apple Store had a previous life as a MSCE and was very helpful.  I believe he even said that I should not have htis problem with Mountain Lion which is why they gave me the flash with it onboard.  I was in the process of starting a new job when I went to Lion, so I have waited to do this next and probably last upgrade to this old MBP since I doubt Apple will support this MBP in Maverick.
I do not have another installation, so that is not an option.  I will try to create an external, I have plenty of hard drives around and see if I can get it done that way.  It might take me a week or two to get back to it, but I will comment back upon completion of that effort.  Thanks for your help....Dave Iverson

  • What is the operating system available for Macbook Dual core Intel processor  system

what is the operating system available for Macbook Dual core Intel processor  system

Exactly what model? Do you really mean the old MacBook with the dual core processor or do you mean one using a Core 2 Duo  processor?
The last OS X that runs on a dual core Mac would be:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements

Hi, on my old iBook, DW MX worked fine. I moved my files to a

  • Final cut pro 5.0 with intel processor

Hello there, I have an offer to purchase final cut pro 5.0 and was wondering if it is compatible with my intel processor imac w/ snow leopard? I have searched the forum, but haven't found this specific question answered. Can it be made to work with an upgrade and if so, which specific one?
    thanks for all your help,
    Paul

    Apple trivia....
Mxxxx are the numbers used when Stores/resellers order Apple products. Not to be confused with model numbers or model identifiers.
Example: the current Mac Pro has the order # MC250 (4 Core) and MC561 (8 Core)
Model # for both is A1289, model ID is MacPro 5,1.
Order numbers (Mxxxx) and model numbers (Axxxx) never get repeated. Each revision or version is always unique. ID # might be continued across product refreshes of hardware but rarely over more than two generations.
The A suffix at the end of an order number is the country code for USA (I think). It differentiates the local keyboard layout on a computer or in the case of software, the accompanying documentation.
Z is used for international products. My Pro has a D suffix because it was bought in Germany.
    So now you know!

  • Installing an intel processor on a power mac G5 (2004) with mac os Xpanther

    Hi everyone,
I really need some help, I need to update my Power Mac G5 because I discover that almost every single new upgrade for Final Cut Pro is for Intel Macs, so i would like to know if it is possible to install this processor to my oldie computer or can I upgrade my panther system to a leopard and being able to run the new programs??'. Thanks a lot

You can't install an Intel processor in your G5. For Intel you need to buy a new/newer Mac.
Here's the *Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements*
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24950 To upgrade, you can skip Tiger 10.4.
Recommend you increase RAM more than the minimum.

  • Windows and Linux on a PowerPC G5 1.6 GHz 768 MB RAM,  no Intel  processor?!!!!!

I have a PowerPC G5 1.6 GHz 768 MB RAM,  no Intel  processor, and I run OSX 10.5.8. I have installed a 932 Gig slave drive and partitioned it in 4 blocks.
I downloaded and installed the Q Emulator BUT I CANNOT get it to target my slave drive and the partition I want my windows XP on; and you can see the message I get in the jpg below. Can anyone instruct me how to do it?  THX MUCH-

Why do you want to run Windows?  What applications are you missing?  You can ususally find a free application if you look.
The benefit of running Windows is to learn how bad it is.
Unix command ln  -- The Unix make link command. I have a copy of virtual PC.  It insists on using a folder in my documents folder for saving all of the virtual machine information.  This folder is rather large.  I used the terminal command ln to move the folder to my external hard drive.  Virtual PC had no problem with this move.  I do not think that Mac applications notice the ln redirects.
You can use the Unix command ln to redirect a reference to folder on your small partition to a folder on  your larger partition. You need to be careful when you pick the folder. You best avoid any system folder, those folders needed at startup. You could pick some user data folder.   Home folders, that is folders in /Users, are a good choice.  Please try this when you have a full backup.
mac harddrive > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    man ln
    ln -s target source
    example:
let's make like my Christmas card folder is on my desktop and make like the names is cards.
    mac $ ls /Volumes
    GREEN/          Macintosh-HD@
    mac $ ls /Volumes/GREEN/Christmas\ Cards/
