Lion vs. Snow Leopard. What would you rather use?

There has been debates about software upgrades. people are saying its not easy to use. blah blah blah. tell me what you think, and i wanna know why.

No matter what you do, whether you switch OS's or not, always have a backup, preferably two.
Asking which is better, lion or snow leopard is a loaded question.  Almost like religion.
Personally I think Lion is a dumbed down version of OSX attempting to merge the ipad with OSX.  As you also discovered no Rosetta (ppc support).  Obviously you can tell I'm pro-snow leopard.
Let the (religious) war begin...

  • Would you rather use libevent or libev?

Both provide the same basic functionality. Libevent is being worked on more at the moment (and is also in [core], iirc), while parts of libev have stagnated a bit (though it is a much smaller library).
The thing that bothers me is that the whole premise behind libev is that it's faster than libevent.. this claim doesn't really hold up under scrutiny. I built the latest libevent (2.0.3-alpha) and libev (3.9) sources and ran libev's bench.c* on it. On my arch64 laptop, libevent consistently wins handily.
    * http://libev.schmorp.de/bench.c, was pulled and modified from the libevent test suite. The "ts" timeval struct seems to be the counter for libevent's routines, while "ta" is for libev. Libevent is finishing 100 to 150 usecs quicker than libev on my computer. I compiled with: gcc -O2 bench.c libev-3.9/ev.o libevent-2.0.3-alpha/*.o -lm -lpthread -lssl -lrt -o bench_test.
Please let me know if there's something wrong with the way I compared the two libraries. If you have any experience with either, I'd like to hear what you think of them.

The results are bogus - bench.c has to be linked against the library you want to test, and is not ABI-compatible with the default libev, so you have to compile in ev.c and event.c as well.
All you did was benchmark libevent against itself, and if you got different results, this is just variation (proof: it would segfault if it called the functions in ev.o).
If you compile two binaries you can run three benchmarks - libevent, libev+event API and libev+native API.
Then you will get the expected result, actually worse with libevent-2.0 when compiled with pthread-support, as it locks the loop on every single access, something not required by libev.

  • IMac 2011 Lion to Snow Leopard if needed?

    Hi all.
I've posted in another discussion about my gradual move over from PC to Mac and the possibility of dual booting but this thought occurred to me. I'm now looking at getting an iMac after using a borrowed mini for a few weeks but finding that multiple monitors/keyboards etc are getting in the way. Plus I need the floorspace the PC is taking up so KVMs and the like aren't really an option.
Anyway, I don't know where Apple are up to at the minute with their hardware/software combinations but if I were to buy a new 27" iMac tomorrow (I'm not: not THAT soon anyway) would it come with Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard installation discs? Would it have Lion preinstalled? If it DID would it come with any discs at all? I believe the recovery partition would handle that part of things (dead HDD notwithstanding) so my suspicion is that no recovery media would be included.
Now, what if I REALLY didn't like Lion or found it had too many problems with my other hardware (I currently have a Lacie NAS drive for example!!) is there any way I could replace Lion with Snow Leopard? Would a retail boxed version, which I think is 10.6.3 have the necessary drivers or at least adequate ones to boot and run Software Update? Would the install disc that came with the MacMini work? My first thought is no it wouldn't. Am I right in thinking the installation discs that ship with a machine are model specific? Would an iMac preinstalled with Lion even be capable of downgrading (we can discuss whether Snow Leopard is a downgrade or not another time)
Anyway, all suggestions welcome as long as they are clean.
Edit before posting: Having said all that if the rotten AppleTV/iTunes keeps losing Home Share connection and kicking me out after 10 minutes of watching a movie then I might just stay a PC user and sell the Apple stuff that isn't working to some unsuspecting numpty. Might just go over to THAT discussion in a minute and add my voice to the ones having issues.......

I suspect the person buying your equipment would be no more a numpty than the original purchaser. Ive been using Lion for some time now and it has frankly no more problems than any other newly introduced software/operating system.
I went through the Windows/PC to Apple a few years ago after much deliberation (and time wasting) I am glad I did it and would not go back. Hving said that I still have a Dell XPS Laptop that is purely used to run Quicken (Windows 7) and nothing else. I could do this with Paralells or bootcamp, but at the moment I see no point. Make the jump to Apple you will probably not regret it. Your wallet might.
My Apple TV works perfectly unless my wireless network is playing up and I suspect Apple cannot do much about that.

  • What would you have?

I have the opportunity to get another Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 2gb memory. I have to replace it with something else though. Its my moms and she was doing some video editing a while back on it but has quit since then.
I figured it would be great to have another Mac Pro so I planned on getting her a new Mac Mini. What would you rather have? A new Mac Mini or Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 that was introduced sometime in 06 or 07?

What would you rather have? A new Mac Mini or Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 that was introduced sometime in 06 or 07?
Other factors such as space availability and usage aside and considering only performance, I'd take the Mac Pro, no question. It'll run circles around any Mac mini and never break a sweat. For many people, though, that extra power isn't needed but the compact size of the Mac mini would be an advantage. For use as a media device, for instance, the power of a Mac Pro would be largely wasted and it's size a serious disadvantage.
So which to choose would depend on many factors which you haven't enumerated here.
    Regards.

  • Lion to Snow Leopard using Time Capsule

Hello folks. Despite all the perks of Lion, I have too many programs that arn't compatible with Lion. How do I know whether this is leopard or mountain?
What would you advise that I use as I need to be running OS X 10.7?
Also can you advise how I upgrade please?
    All help appreciated.  Thank you.

Thank you for your response Niel.
I do run Microsoft Office 2011 - will Snow Leopard support this?
Finally why snow leopard and not mountain lion?

  • What happens when I upgrade to mountain lion from snow leopard?

I currently have 2 partitions. my mac side and my windows 7 home side.
If i upgrade to mountain lion from snow leopard will i be expected to reinstall bootcamp and windows7 home along with all my other windows programs?
What happens to the partitions? do they stay the same or does the upgrade pretty much do a factory restore and make me start from square one again?
I have a time capsule. but do not really know how to work it like its supposed to. i just really use it to store data that i do not need on my partitions at the current times.

I do not have any knowledge about boorcamp but on my old MacBook with snowleapard,
I was not able to upgrade to Mountain Lion Because of my hardware I think.
    And about tha bootcamp partition:
there shouldn't be any problem with upgrading "if even possible" because the Mac partition
    can't edit the Windows partition.
I hope this helps you, but I would do some more research befor upgrading instead of completely trusting on my advise.

I wanted to buy a Dragon ,Speech Recognition Programme for Mac but it says its for OS Lion, and I have OS Snow Leopard. Would it have worked on Snow Leopard?

The simplest method would be to ask them for their Snow Leopard version and say you can't upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8. I'm almost sure they will sell you a copy.
Generally if your machine can only upgrade to 10.7 Lion and not directly to 10.8 Mountain Lion, then it's best left on 10.6.8. in my opinion as your going to loose too much other software and slow down your machine in the process.
This rapid OS X upgrade cycle has caused plenty of problems for users and developers alike, so I suspect you will find a sympathizer with the developer.
In fact I'm not recommending Mac's to anyone anymore because Apple simply has lost touch with reality.

You need a "Core 2 Duo" for lion, and I'm guessing you only have a "Core Duo"  My wife's macbook is also a "Core Duo" and has Snow Leapord, but cannot install Lion.....

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!
To learn how to stay safe (with or without anti-virus software), and how to decide whether to use anti-virus software, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • Can I have both Lion and Snow Leopard on One Hard Drive?

My problem is I need to run a PowerPC game on Lion which Lion no longer supports. So i thought i could download Snow Leopard back to my Mac and partiition my hard drive in the process as that is the only way i know of to have both Lion and Snow Leopard. I went through the Boot Camp Asistant process and it seems it will only partition Windows 7 to my Mac when i need Snow Leopard. If anyone has any idea how to help me have both Lion and Snow Leopard at the same time on just one hard drive or figure out how to run the PowerPC programs on my Mac (if there is a way around it). The help will be well appreciated!

How To Run Snow Leopard On A New Mac
This does not apply to new Mac Minis or MacBook Airs. When newer models are introduced that also require Lion for hardware support, the techniques described below will no longer work with the possible exception of using Parallels 7.
    What has to be done:
Create a new partition on the hard drive.
Get a clone of a 10.6.8 Snow Leopard system. Put the cloned Snow Leopard system onto the new partition.
Step One: Create a new partition on the hard drive
To resize the drive and create a new partition do the following:
    1.    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2.   You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3.    In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4.   Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Step Two: Obtain a clone of a Snow Leopard system:
You will need access to a Mac already running Snow Leopard. You will need a 16 GB USB flash drive or an external hard drive to which you can clone the Snow Leopard system from the Mac that has Snow Leopard installed. Alternatives are:
    Option One:
Install a new Snow Leopard system onto a USB flash drive. Boot the Mac used for installing with the USB flash drive. Update the flash drive system to 10.6.8 using the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard. Verify that you can boot the Mac with the USB flash drive.
Take the USB flash drive to your new Mac and try booting from it. If it works then clone the system from the flash drive to the newly made partition:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new partition on the internal drive. Source means the USB flash drive.
    Option Two:
If you have a large enough external drive you can erase and use, then it would be easier to just clone the entire Snow Leopard system from the source Mac computer to the external drive.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the Snow Leopard Mac's internal drive.
After cloning verify that it will boot the source Mac. If so then take the external drive to your new Mac boot with it. If all is well then restore the clone to the new partition on your new Mac:
Restore the clone using Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new partition on the internal drive. Source means the external drive.
If the above seems too daunting then you might consider running Snow Leopard inside an emulator such as Parallels 7. You are permitted to install a single copy of Snow Leopard inside a virtual machine. You will need to first purchase a copy of Parallels 7 and install it on your new Mac. Create a new virtual machine configured for Mac OS X. You may then install Snow Leopard in the virtual machine then download Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and update to 10.6.8. Be sure to include Rosetta in your initial Snow Leopard installation. Rosetta is not installed by default rather it's an optional install.

  • What would you do with Intel iMacs with WM97/Thus-T in Word ?

In a school in Marin County there are 20 Intel iMacs running 10.4.11 (512 MB RAM) all networked and running fine.  Several students reported a Macro warning notice when launching a Word (Mac 2004 Student edition) document (.doc).    Have looked over the current available anti-viral programs running under 10.4.11 and submitted several files to three different websites which analyze the file against 20 or more virus detectors.  Most sites and local apps found the WM97/Thus-T virus in all the offending files.   The only free application which cured the files, rather than quarantining them or deleting them, and ran with 10.4.11 was Sophos.   Sampled only one of the iMacs with a full Sophos scan of the User folder, and it found 47  "WM97/Thus-T" infected files, and cured all of them.  Repeat scan of Home folder ----> no threats found.   Some of these infected Word files go back three years, and the machines are running fine.
The students are not supposed to bring files from home, nor are they supposed to take files home.  There are a few PC towers and PC laptops on site, all with anti-viral software. The students do not currently e-mail this files nor receive e-mailed files.  For fun, I tried e-mailing one of the infected files to myself, and aol and gmail both blocked the transmission.
QUESTION:   What would you now do ?  It doesn't seem this WM97/Thus-T is a threat to Macs.  Would you feel compelled or it's mandatory to run Sophos on all the Macs on site ?
What about liability ?   If one of these infected Word files found its way on a Windows PC would the school be liable ?   What is the worst case scenario of this virus on the Mac platform ?    On the Windows platform ?

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
    For Tiger:  http://www.clamxav.com/download.php#tiger
and for Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion from here:  http://www.clamxav.com/

  • IMovie won't open after downgrading from Lion to Snow Leopard

Okay iMovie 08' and 11' both worked absoloutly fine on my MacBook Pro (17" Core 2 Duo 2009 model) when I had Snow Leopard installed.
I then upgraded to Lion and iMovie 11' still worked fine but Lion had a lot of bugs so I decided to wipe and install Snow Leopard again. I then used the Migration Assistant to move my Apps from a Time Machine backup to my Mac. Everything worked okay except Java was broken. Everytime I launched a Java application it would say Java 1.5 not found. I managed to fix this with a lot of Googling.
But now I've come across another issue. I noticed that iWeb, iPhoto and iMovie will not open. The icons bounce in the dock and then they finish bouncing and it appears to have loaded, the top menubar says the application name and I can click on File, Edit from the top menu and all the normal options are presented to me. But the main interface of these programs simply does not open. I managed to fix iPhoto by reading online about removing a folder called ProKit.Framework in my Library and that worked for iPhoto perfectly it now comes up and loads like normal. But iWeb and iMovie still do not load. I don't really care about iWeb but I do care about iMovie not working as I use that all the time.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
    So far what I've tried:
    1. Remove all traces of anything iLife releated on my Hard Disk including pkg receipts, cache files, .pref files and so on
    2. Tried just reinstalling the entire iLife suite several times
    3. Tried installing Quicktime 7 from the Snow Leopard Optional Installs DVD
    4. Tried changing colour profiles on my Display (I read this worked for someone else, did nothing for me)
    5. Made a new user account on my Mac and tried to run iMovie from that account, same result it 'runs' but the interface doesn't show up.
Thanks for any help you can provide

I just thought I'd reply to say that I just fixed this by deleting the following folder and afterwards running software update.
    iLifeMediaBrowser in /Library/Application Support
It would appear that if you erase this folder and then reinstall iLife it does something that brings this folder back or recreates it. But if you run Software update after erasing it, it downloads this folder from Apple (about 2.5MB) and that fixes the problem completely.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Macbook Air with no OSX (Mid 2011) ... cannot install Lion nor Snow Leopard

I have a Macbook Air with no OSX (Mid 2011) ... and I cannot install Lion nor Snow Leopard.
I purchased this Macbook Air 13" and found that the OS had been wiped off. Since then I've been able to get the Recovery Disk Assistant to get me into the Recovery Partition on the MBA... but when I try the "Reinstall Mac OS X" from within Mac OS X Utilities, the download fails after 30 sec. and I get the error message, "Could not find installation information for this machine. Contact Apple Care". This MBA is still covered under Apple's Applecare, but the nearest Apple Store is 3 hrs away and from what I've read, they may not be able to help me.
I know all about Build 11A2063 but cannot figure out where or how to get that.
Also, I've tried making a bootable Lion Drive from my Mac Mini onto a flashdrive, but this too did not work on the MBA (I assume because it isn't Build 11A2063).
I have a huge expensive paper weight with no idea of where to go from here. Any help would be much appreciated.

Where did you buy an MBA without an operating system?  Was this from another individual who took the liberty to remove the Mac OS X before selling it to you?
You might try calling Apple customer support and have them walk you through the process, as they can figure out just what version of the OS should be on that machine.
