Lion vs X11?

I run X11 routinely.  My mac is first and foremost a portal to the unix machines I work on professionally.
After the lion update, I find that clicking on an X11 window no longer brings me to the X11 menu.  Instead, some previous app's menu remains on the screen.  This makes it difficult to, for instance, start a new xterm or quit X11.
This seems like strange new behavior.  Is anyone else seeing it?  Is there anything I can do to fix it?
Are there any other X11 alternatives for Lion?

Er... how could my .Xfiles have anything to do with MacOsX app behaviors?
FTR, I'm seeing this behavior consistently on several machines.
I'll try creating a fresh user...

Have a look in your Utilities folder - X11 should be there. Launch it and you'll be offered the option to install.

Since downloading OS X Mountain Lion my WordSearch9 will not open. I got a message saying that X11 was not supported and directed to a site to download an update "XQuartz" which I did. Now when I try to launch WordSearch9 I get a message "X11 cannot be found". I did follow the instructions to download and install XQuartz, but there still seems to be a problem. Anyone have an idea?

Your report indicates Mountain Lion, but your footer indicates Lion.  I'll assume you're on 10.8.2; on the current Mountain Lion version.
    Rebooting is fine.
The posted diagnostics look like there might be a problem with the Xquartz install, or it is not starting, or it's not authorized for the sandbox.  (But I don't know enough about that to be certain.)
Try launching X11.app directly from your Applications > Utilities folder, and see if that works, or if shows any dialog boxes, or that reports any errors.
If you had an Xquartz kit installed and it's not the 2.7.4 (current) Xquartz kit, then please update to that version.  (I'm assuming that site is where you got your Xquartz kit from, too.)
I'd also suggest also discussing this more directly with the Xquartz folks via mailing list or the IRC channel, or collecting up the Xquartz logs and then posting a bug over at the Xquartz site; here are the details on bug reporting for Xquartz.

  • I need to reinstall X11 on Lion. How can i do this?

After having downloaded and installed Wireshark I'm experiencing  some trouble with X11. It continuosly crashes and restart untile i logout. So i thought i need to reinstall X11. Is this correct? Is there someone having the same issue? How can i do it?
    Thanks in advance
    greetings

Hi guys, I have attempted to follow the steps above, but still nothing.
Running the following gives me no result:
    find /Users/me/Library -name '*X11*'
I have moved /fink and /opt (darwinports) out of the way but still getting crashes
Also, no .xinitrc anywhere in the system
And as you can see below, even though I am on a MacBook air
which has pre-installed Lion, it's still priced at $30
I know it's a user configuration problem, as if I log in with another
user I do not get any crash...
Does anybody know how can I find out what's crashing it?
I attach my crash log here

  • X11 unstable since upgrading to Lion

    Hi,
I used to connect to several Linux servers via ssh. Since I got updated to Lion, my X connection is lost when I close a X11 window. An example should be better.
    I use:
    MacLion$ ssh -X myName@ServerLinux
    myName@ServerLinux$ firefox &
    it works,
then I close the firefox window,
    then
    myName@ServerLinux$ firefox &
    The application 'firefox' lost its connection to the display localhost:10.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
    the application.
    myName@ServerLinux$ gedit
    The application 'gedit' lost its connection to the display localhost:10.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
    the application.
    Is there a solution ?
    Thanks a lot.

If you do not want to mess with emacs, you could use nano.
If you do not want to mess with sudo, then you could create a ~/.ssh/config using nano
    nano ~/.ssh/config
    then add the
    ForwardX11TImeout 596h
Control-O Control-X (see menu at the bottom of the nano display).
NOTE:  using ~/.ssh/config is specific to the current user.  If you use multiple accounts on your Mac, the other accounts would not be using the same ~/.ssh/config file.
And if you want to specify the value on a per ssh session you can use
    ssh -o ForwardX11TImeout=596h [email protected]

  • Reinstalling X11 in Lion impossible ?

    Hello
I crashed my X11 (Lion) and I cannot start it again. I also can't reinstall it because the checkbox to choose X11 during installation can not be clicked. What shall I do ?

    Hi,
I did manage to get hold of my son's MacBook Pro and check this part out when he Upgraded.
He clicked the Link in the App Store
This downloaded th Install Package which he then elected to run (without making a Backup Install Disk)
On checking his disk I could find no trace of a .dmg or other stuffed file or any Download in any of the places I would expect to find one.
On checking the App Store Again there was no obvious way to get the Download to start again.
That would seem to leave Time Machine and any Backup that created between the Upgrade time as the iChat App  is seemingly failing to start properly.
If you have a Backup then go to the Applications Folder.
    Start Time Machine.
Go back to the oldest Backup.
Highlight iChat in that Windows and then Click Restore.

  • X11 breaks in OSX Lion 10.7.5?

This is more of a bug report than a question, but it needs to be confirmed first.
Description: After downloading the two 10.7.5 updates, X11 breaks completely: it will and cannot open anything. When you open a file that runs in X11, it doesn't do anything; you're lucky to get a black screen. As a result, all Wine Users on mac and probably all GIMP, etc. users may be affected (I have only tested Winebottler, not MacPorts Wine or any other applications). From constant testing, I know that X11 ran perfectly fine before the update; I have test data to prove that if needed. The issue is that now, it's broken, and I'd like to know if there are any alternatives or if there is anyone else who has encountered a problem like this.
Other variables: Java Update, Winecfg, WineBottler itself (like I said before, this wasn't tested on a self-made package of Wine)
    X11 Version: XQuartz 2.6.4 (xorg-server 1.10.6)

Edit: Using XQuartz 2.6.4, xorg-server 1.10.6, which came with my mac (and whose Apple project has been discontinued). This is the 'About' for the application in question.
This is NOT the XQuartz that is downloaded from the XQuartz website.
Test Data: Only Winebottler 1.4.1 was tested in conjunction with X11. However, it worked fine before the Java Update and the Booster update for 10.7.5.
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 13 inch Macbook Pro
    That's the computer I'm using.

  • Where do I send a long list of problems I have with non-functionality with the Lion OSX and new Safari for Lion.

In the past two weeks I have been documenting my Lion problems.
First, Arrows gone from finder windows; makes it difficult in comparing long lists of files in folder, or compare documents when reviewing line by line. This is obviously a change by people who do not compare long lists in windows comparing files between versions of projects ... the click to next screen is NOT equal to arrows.
Second, Finder Redreaw - doesn't. Move files to a fold, if there are a lot of files, they image of the files being moved remains in finder (see attached screen capture) until Finder is restarted and if COPY function is running. last files in Copy queue are not copied.
Screen capture 5 minutes after moving files to a folder - the selected file images are still in Finder after the move was completed.
Third, it is SLOW, particularly going to an "Attach file" in email, drawing the content of a folder to select an attachment is long enough for me to go to the kitchen, get a drink and come back. Just like the old days of OS7.
Fourth, shifting/recentering screen away from where I am working. Several programs, browsers, Adobe Photoshop/inDesign, and dear old Pages re center my screen - not to the center, but if I choose 30 of 70 images in a folder, it will shift … somewhere else in the folder instead of where I just clicked. If I am working on a document in inDesign or PhotoShop it will do the same - the cursor and screen drift elsewhere to find something it has been amused by. Sometimes it is a word, or a file, but often it is off the pastboard and on the etherial pasteboard on which the pages sit. Or if I'm zoomed in on an image, it moves to somewhere else.
I use a mouse and keyboard, both Apple wireless. I do not use a trackpad, but have a tablet/stylus I am afraid to put into the mix until this crap is stopped.
Fifth, SAVE AS… is gone. You must unlock, duplicate and edit the duplicate … and must rename it in Finder, or use EXPORT to save as the same format under a new name. SAVE AS… worked. Not broke, why fix it?
Personal Comment: The problems seem to be the triumph of coked up software engineers ooohing and aaahing over "Wouldn't it be cool if..."   Cool, if they were Microsoft, and required everyone change how they have worked on Macs for the past (almost) three decades. Triumph of brainstorming over functionality.
Sixth, I can't use Cocoa Booklet, but that really started in OSX 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Most of my X11/Cocoa programs stopped worked about that time. Apple is no longer supporting "open source"?
    But Wait! There's More...
Seventh, Tonight, trying to download a 1.7 gig archive onto a disk where 280 Gigs were supposedly free, it would not download because, according to the wonderful new Safari and the wonderful new Lion, there is not enough disk space to download a 1.7 gig file in a mere 280 Gigs of free space.
I might be able to move Snow Leopard onto the iMac, but my deciding factor was that Apple, in its wisdom, decided to make iBook Author unable to run under Snow Leopard. So moving to Snow Leopard means I have lost the ONLY benefit I get from the new computer and the new system.
    This really stinks.

  • On new Macbook Pro I7, 4GB, X11 takes 1 minute and 45 seconds to load.

Any ideas as to why X11 takes so long to load on a new Macbook Pro?  On my last Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, X11 launched in 15 seconds or less.  Is there another Lion-specific version of X11 which did not come with the Xcode toolkit?

I have X11 version 2.6.3 that installed in the Utilities folder. I just checked the checkbox for X11 when I installed Mac OS X (now 10.7.2). Boot up in 10 seconds on  a Mac Pro (tower).

  • Parental Controls bug in Mountain Lion 10.8.2

For years I've used Parental Controls, not to restrict my daughter's web content, but to limit her time on the computer.  But tonight I upgraded Mountain Lion from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2 and something broke.
Suddenly every secure web page she tries to access (to include google, gmail, amazon, etc.) fails.  It says "Parental controls restricts access to secure websites".
A little hunting around turned up the following Apple Knowledge Base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2900 that says "https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. For this reason, encrypted websites must be explicitly allowed using the Always Allow list. Encrypted websites that are not on the Always Allow list will be blocked by the automatic Internet content filter."
I understand that logic however that should NOT apply to me since I'm not trying to automatically restrict her adult web content or create allowed/blocked site lists, etc.  She has *unrestricted* web site access, so the Internet content filter shouldn't even be in play here.
Just to get this up and running, I did type the Admin account and password in at the prompt to let her gain access to the web pages.  However that did not work.  Even though it said it would now allow access - it did not.
I also tried going into Parental Controls, turning ON web site filtering, going into Custom, and adding in approved secure web sites (google, etc.)  Even *that* did not work.
Everything was great until 10.8.2 came along but now her account is for all intents and purposes unusable.
    Help?  And thanks.

Same problem here. Apple seems to be neglecting the parental controls. First, they broke X11: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/439. 10.8.1 didn't address that problem. Not only does 10.8.2 not address the X11 bug, it actually breaks secure web browsing!
Just to add a little more information, secure browsing on Safari seems to work OK for me once authorized. However, neither Firefox nor Chrome work with any secure site even after they have been authorized. Unfortunately, my daughter's school site is secure and it doesn't work on Safari so her Mac is useless for school now.
Looks like I'll have to restore using Time Machine and not update again until I know this has been addressed.
    Apple, I'm not impressed.
    Mike

  • Can I copy fonts from /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts to /Library/Fonts ?

    Hi,
    Short Version
The short version of my question is in the subject (specifically, I'm referring to files of type afm, pfb, pfa and maybe some other sort of pf? located in /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/)
    Long Version
Here's the long version, along with an explanation of why I'm interested. Please keep in mind that the only thing I know about fonts is what is contained in the xfig documentation.
I'm using LaTeX Equation Editor. (It, in turn, is using the TeXlive 2007 distribution of (La)TeX. Yes that replaced some "system files" like /usr/bin/pstopdf, but I recovered them from another Leopard Mac.) However, the equations which LaTeX Equation Editor is rendering just look wrong; for example, the equation $a=b$ renders in a boxy upright font, whereas the symbols are supposed to be italicized (math mode). Some symbols (for example $\epsilon$ a.k.a. ε) just don't appear. However, I found that the directory /tmp/random string of hyphenated numbers/ contained equation.tex, equation.eps and equation.pdf (among other files). Examining equation.eps using gv renders the equation correctly. However, viewing equation.pdf in Preview reproduces the faulty rendering. The faulty pdf is reproduced by regenerating equation.pdf using epstopdf (as supplied by TeXLive). Using (Apple's) pstopdf instead results in a slightly better result, but symbols like ε are still missing.
Just using the eps file is not useful (in addition to being kludgy) because the problem is also reproduced if I import the eps file into Keynote. Using Grab to take a screen shot of gv's successful rendering eliminates the transparent background, which results in an ugly import into Keynote.
Incidentally, I did not have this problem when using Tiger.
I'm assuming, particularly since gv didn't even work properly until I had installed fonts following the xfig documentation, that this is a font issue, and that, in particular, my X11 fonts are not transferring to Aqua. Is there a way of transferring the X11 fonts I installed for gv etc. to Aqua and if so how? Do I have to worry that font files in Aqua appear to be named after the name of the fonts, whereas under X11, the map from font name to font file appears to be the purpose of the extra file /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/fonts.dir?
    Thanks!

You must in fact add your custom fonts, as the default font set will be the same on all macs running Lion.
You do not offer details, but I may confess what I do in order to have the same font set on all macs at home, just in case someone needs to work on another computer. Usually, they are linguistic fonts.
    - I do not install additional fonts, bar the first time when I install a new Mac OS
    - save all fonts stored in System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts unto an xternal drive, just in case something wrong happems
    - I have a folder with my custom fonts, which are added to all macs around
I do not know what you want to do, but I offered a hint.

    Error: Can't open display: 10.1.4.123:0.0

    Feedback would be appreciated.

If your Mac OS X X11 Display server is properly forwarded, as in -X or -Y, would have the remote system's DISPLAY environment variable holding something like
    DISPLAY=localhost:10.0
It would not be 10.1.4.123:0.0, which is in the error message:
    Error: Can't open display: 10.1.4.123:0.0
10.1.4.123:0.0 implies that you are NOT using the ssh X11 tunnel that -X or -Y would create, but rather you are attempting to directly connect to the Mac OS X X11 Display server without using the ssh X11 tunnel.
Also, you should at least experiment with -X or -Y to see if that does work as expected, and even compare the ssh debug output from your setup vs an -X or -Y connection.  It may be useful.

  • Custom installation of Lion OS X?

In Snow Leopard and Leopard, it was possible to customize the isntallation of OS X, by removing printer drivers, languages, fonts, X11, etc.
It seems that the option to do so in Lion is greyed out. Why? And how do I customize the installation of Lion?
I like choice in the matter of how much disk space something will take up...
    Thanks!

None of the optional packages are installed by default anymore (including printer drivers).
If you want a optional package such as a printer driver or Java, you will get a prompt asking you to download it from Apples servers the first time you try to use it.
Other things that used to be on the install DVD such as Xcode now come from the app store if you want them.
Edit: I'm not sure about Languages though, they might still get installed.
