Lion will not install. tried everything... i think.

followed every 'get ready for lion' guide on the web.
tried out every forum and blog troubleshooting suggestion I could find.
meets the system requirements
Mac OS X 10.6.8
Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM
30 GBs free space
repaired and verified my disk
repaired and verified my disk permissions (from snow leapord install dvd)
backed up using Time Machine
tried installing normally from the app store, and then from an a USB drive
tried deleting the install app and re-downloading it
tried a double hard restart
where im stuck is right after the restart
it begins installing, says 'about 33 minutes remaining', but doesn't progress at all.
checked the install log, and the last two lines say:
13 Jul 20 18:57:07 localhost OSInstaller[352]: Can not connect to /var/run/systemkeychain.socket: No such file or directory
13 Jul 20 18:57:07 localhost OSInstaller[352]: PFPackacge::packageWithURL - can't instantiate package: /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg
help is greatly appreciated

and now I feel very silly.
apparently the install was just very slow. there was no error. I waited maybe 30min to see that it had progressed about 20%.
I'm one of those guys who will never again let my computer sit for 4 hours and come back to see 0%, but I guess this time, I just over-anticipated error.
don't know if you guys have different problems. try all the things I did above. if not,
patience was my solution.

    Hi..
Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
OSX v10.6.6 or later (V10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available spare
From here > Apple - OS X Lion - Technical specifications
If your Mac meets the requirements, installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo reinstalls the App Store for you which may help.
Restart your Mac after instaling the combo installed. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8.
If you have anti virus software installed, you may need to disable that in order to install Lion.

  • OS X Lion will not install

I have purchased OS X Lion, and, the program will not install on my 2007 IMAC currently running Snow Leopard. I get a message stating a recovery system cannot be created. I am also running bootcamp on my Mac.

I had the same problem.  10.6.8, Bootcamp with XP and Parallels and 400GB free space.  "recovery system cannot be created" I tried all the Apple help topics and forums with no success. The only way to get it to install was to delete the bootcamp partition.  Unfortunately this also meant that I couldn't reinstall XP as it can't be installed under Lion.  I still think it was due to Parallels but I can't prove it.
I wish I didn't keep trying to install it, though.  Lion is the worst OS ever created by Apple.  I've been with OS X since Cheetah (10.0), and Lion was the only version that made me go back out of necessity. I could live with Rosetta and peripherals that are no longer supported.  What I can't live with is bugs like no search in mail, display issues, mouse issues, programs opening old documents at launch even though its been turned off, apps changing file extensions, incomplete results in Spotlight, etc..  It wasn't stable enough to even bother to try any of my third party apps.  I didn't even get far enough to find out if I had the wifi or samba bugs that most have.
Lion turned my iMac into a buggy, unstable, 27" iPad. Everything has been oversimplified and hidden. iCal and Address Book have been crippled.  Even simple things like Spotlight showing the path to a file (that is if it can find anything) have been removed. Everything Lion "replaced" has been made less functional, like iCal, Address Book, Spotlight, Spaces and Expose.  Everything Lion "added" is nothing but gimmicks, like Launchpad.  Then there's the removing things for no reason, like Frontrow. To top it off, 10.7.1 fixed absolutely nothing.
The best advise is to keep the Lion installer tucked away until the 10.7.5 update comes out. Maybe by then it will be stable enough to be used for anything other than a toy and maybe you'll be able to install it without trashing your bootcamp partition. Till then, enjoy the superior functionality of Snow Leopard.

  • Mountain Lion will not install on MBP (late 2011) Macintosh HD: "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer"

Tried to upgrade from 10.7.4 on relatively new MBP. It appears that Mountain Lion successfully downloaded from App Store. However, ML will not install to the hard drive because "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer". Thanks for advice.

  • IPhone 4 will not restore - TRIED EVERYTHING

So I have a multitude of issues with my iPhone 4 and after trying a multitude of fixes that I could find, no change.
Here are the issues I'm currently facing:
    - iPhone will not turn on whlie NOT connected to power source
    - When connected to computer, iPhone will display apple logo then switch off then back again continuously
    - I can put the phone into recovery mode (with itunes logo and cable display on screen) but am unable to put into dfu mode (I've tried everything)
    - when put into recovery mode, iTunes will recognize a general iPhone 4 connection and prompts to initiate a recovery
    - iPhone only registers with iTunes not with computer
    - Recovery yields either error 21 or error 3194
    I have tried:
    - Tinyumbrella: iPhone shows up under "Recovery Devices" with a question mark and a series of random numbers
    - altering host file
    - all manner of restore in iTunes
Is there ANYTHING else I can do to fix this **** thing?

What I would do is run an anti spyware scan / anti virus scan with the iPhone connected to the computer. This way all of your files from both an be checked. It sounds like you have a Trojan that often causes computers of any type to force a shutdown and go into a reboot mode. My guess is you might have had this occur recently on a computer you linked to. If not it may have come from a shareware program or a download you've recently installed. You can down load all of your iPhone files to your computer, run the scans, disconnect your iPhone before file deletion sir scrubs , reset to company settings/ default mode then plug it back in so you can re download your files once they've been scrubbed. If this doesn't work try to disable the location off mode and redo everything again. This way your privacy settings might block or scramble the malware or virus that's tracing your device through your computer. This is the best advice I have. Web root Spysweeper will destroy anything and use a full based line antivirus program. If you connect your device to a work computer chances are it came through an email while it was connected. At any rate good luck and this is the best home remedy I can come up with. iPhones aren't supposed to be inflicted because they don't run on most active x programs, but if a file you're using does that may be your intersection point.

  • Folder Actions will not work - tried everything

Recently Folder Actions simply stopped working on 10.6.4. They worked fine before then recently just stopped working.
I've tried everything I can think of, including:
    1. completely removing enabling & disabling & enabling folder actions through the setup app.
    2. trashing folder actions plist files in user domain and relaunching
    3. disabling related launchd processes with lingon
    4. trashing launch agents in user domain and also trying to unload them in terminal
    5. trying to kill the folder actions dispatcher process in activity monitor (just relaunches, as it should)
    6. emptying system caches including dyld shared cache using cocktail
    7. doing most of the above and restarting
It's driving me nuts. Any other ideas?

I finally go Folders Action to work, after being unable to use it even for a simple beep for years now.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Changed permissions to 755 for the following folder and two contained files (note that 775 didn't work for me)
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist
    2. Changed the following lines within ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.FolderActions.enabled.plist (using TextWrangler)
    from:
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <false/>
    to:
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <true/>
Prior to the permissions changes within #1 above, the value of <true/> kept getting changed back to <false/> by something in the system... and though
there was improvement by the permissions changes, the following console message appeared until false was changed to true.
    com.apple.FolderActions.enabled[4127] launchctl: Error unloading: com.apple.FolderActions.folders
At this point true is staying true, and not being changed by unknown forces to false, and the above message is not appearing.
    3. The only other thing I did prior to #1 and #2 above, was to run the script (unsaved),
tell application "/System/Library/CoreServices/Folder Actions Dispatcher.app" to tick
This little tell line caused something to occur where my Folder Action surprised me and worked for the first time though it took about 30 seconds and was erratic,
sometimes performing, sometimes not, though if I would do move something into the folder to trigger the action that should occur, and did not occur, then at the point
running the above tell line or script would cause the action to occur.
    4. At this point I don't fool with the tell line or script from #3, and it seems that systemevents has gotten involved, as well as launchd, and with my simple Folder Action script
I'm getting the folder action within 10 seconds compared to 30 to 45 if ever seconds.
    5. This is still too early to tell if this is the wonder pill I've needed since Leopard, and now Snow Leopard (and maybe Tiger as well: I forget when I even tried Folder Actions).
There was a time when I moved things around, so that the items normally found in the former AppleScript folder, were placed elsewhere in subfolders, so I don't know if that lead to this...
because I could get Folder Actions to work on Macs in the Applestore, but not my own Mac. Watching the console messages was helpful. I don't think it's a big concern that
deprecated messages are found sometimes. That's a just a normal part of the constantly rebuilding of things that goes on. It's more like a reminder that we've got an upgraded
OEM part were going to start using, and the older part won't be available after such and such date, so program accordingly, and in the meantime drive.

  • Mountain lion will not install because time machine uses hard drive for back up.  What should I do?

I have downloaded Mountain Lion but it will not allow me to install because the time machine uses the hard drive to back up.  How do I solve this problem?

Unless you are trying to install on an external hard drive that actually has been used for Time Machine backups, this is usually caused by having a folder named "Backups.backupd" on your hard drive somewhere. It may be at the root level of the hard drive, but may also be elsewhere. Try searching for it, and then delete it. (You shouldn't need it.)

  • In the installation process lion will not install as message  reads MAC HD 904 gb available this disk is used for time machine backups .What is the next step

After downloading ,completing the lic agreement phase, the next step is where to install and automatically' MAC HD with 904 gb available this disk is used for time machine backups' is shown and installation is blocked .
Any body got any idea what to do next ?

Time machine needs its own partition to operate. So you are not going install a OSx Lion on that volume.
If there is enough room you may be able to partition the drive on the fly with DiskUtility
Are you saying you clean installed Lion and you are trying to move your user Data over with TM via the migration Assistant?  Please explain.

  • Mountain lion will not install - messages says the hard drive is for time machine

basically i have gone thru the install process
I get to screen that asks which drive to install
I have 3 drives that show up
    Mac-ssd
    bootcamp
    mac storage drive
it will not let me pick any drive(have not tried bootcamp)
it says that this drive is being used by time machine
    lesnorvell

Your Mac has a directory named Backups.backupdb located on it.  If you have good time machine backups somewhere else, you can delete the directory and ML will allow you to select the drive.

  • Lion will not install

My computer crashed. Installed new hard drives in Raid configuration. Downloaded Lion from Apple. have 10.6.8. Previously had 10.7
    Now 10.7 refuses to install.
    Any suggestions?

Don't try to put 10.7 on a RAID. it does not Install, and it is a waste of drives to RAID the Boot Volume.
If you want performance, establish a separate Boot drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden Unix files including Paging/Swap. Using a fast rotating drive will give that setup a boost. Using an SSD gives it an even bigger boost. Move User files off to a Data drive (or two, or three).

Please help! After several years of working without an issue, I tried to sync my itunes library to my ipod recently (the only changes were that I edited existing playlists, no new music was added or deleted).
    The issue appeared as follows:
    - Firstly I saw error 69.  I removed all music that appeared to be an error (given that no songs had given this error beforehand, I don’t understand why all of a sudden itunes wouldn’t allow my ipod to sync with songs it had previously synced)
    - Once I had removed these songs, I attempted again to sync, but itunes now just freezes mid sync (sometimes on a song, sometimes not).  I cannot click on anything in itunes when it freezes, I just have to shut it down via task manager.  Sometimes itunes will sync a song without an issue (and progress further in syncing, then freeze later), and sometimes it will freeze on that same song it previously had no issue with, stating “error 69”
    - I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  The issue remained.
    - I uninstalled and reinstalled my entire music library.  The issue remained.  I created new music libraries that do not have any songs from my previous music library. The issue remained.
    - I have attempted to sync another ipod, which previously worked.  It experiences the same issue now.  Both ipods now, every time I attempt to sync, request me to restore defaults and scan and fix issues with the ipods.  Sometimes I do so, but it makes no difference.
    - In summary: itunes will not sync even if uninstalled and reinstalled.  I have tried syncing two different ipods, both of which synced without issue previously, but neither will sync now.  I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and creating a new music library, but itunes still will not sync.

    Hi victorian1978,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. You may want to double-check that you are completely removing all the iTunes files when uninstalling/reinstalling, and make sure you test with only a limited amount of data initially (perhaps a single song). You may find the following article helpful:
