Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you wil be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
If you have a TimeMachine drive, update it and disconnect for the duration of this restore time. It will be your second backup system and will have to be wiped and setup again after successfully going back to Snow Leopard if it was connected to the OS X 10.7 boot drive. If it wasn't, then leave it disconnected without updating to Lion. (note: I'm not a TimeMachine user, so I don't know how to restore 10.6 from this medium)
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk of ALL DATA. (warning, everything will be gone and not recovered, OS, programs, files, Windows etc all gone.)
Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final step optional but highly receommended.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version..  (in addition to TimeMachine drive for more immediate backups.)
It's not advised to have a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, as two drives gives hardware protection in case one fails.

I can't install my old logic 8 on my new macbook pro. It says it does not support powerpc applications anymore. what do i need to do?? this is ridiculous!!!

Logic 8 will probably run on your new machine but the installation program contains some older PPC code for pre Intel Macs. This was not a problem as all OSX versions contained the "Rosetta" PPC emulation, that is, up until Lion when all PPC emulation was dropped.
There are ways to do this however, try searching Google for:  Installing Logic 8 under Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • I read that Lion will not support my Quicken and/or Appleworks.  How am I going to use my financial data and my documents?

I have read that Lion will not support Quick and/or Appleworks.  How am I to continue to use my financial data and documents?

I posted this answer to the same question about AppleWorks in the AppleWorks community two days ago.
I use iWork. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. If you still have access to AppleWorks you can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object. Check Yvan Koenig's iDisk for many AppleScripts he has written to make conversion easier. Most are made to do batch conversions.
There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I recommend using PICT or PNG for best results.
For a replacement for Quicken, I've narrowed my choices down to SEE Finance, Moneydance or Jumsoft's Money. I need to work with them more before I make my final decision. Mac | Life suggests SEE Finance as the best option.

before the fanboys chime in to tell you that you should have known that upfront because it was discussed in certain channels: no, rosetta is not implemented in lion anymore, powerpc support is dropped. all you can do is go back to snow leopard.
You can also upgrade your software to make it work with Lion

Upgrade to newer versions compatible with Lion or downgrade to Snow Leopard:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • How do I import addresses from Address Book Ver 4.1.2 to the Lion Address Book version 7.0? Mountain Lion will not allow me to open Address book Version 4.1.2

How do I import addresses from Address Book Ver 4.1.2 to the Lion Address Book version 7.0? Mountain Lion will not allow me to open Address book Version 4.1.2

Do you have any addresses in the Lion version?
If not, copy the AddressBook folder from your username/Library/Application Support/ folder on the old mac (or backup).
Copy it to the same location on your new Mac, replacing the one that is there. Start Address Book in Mountain Lion and it should convert the files to the correct format.
If you do have addresses, it is a little more complicated.
First, create a Contacts Archive (from File>Export menu). This will be your backup.
Next, export the current contacts as vCards.
    Then, follow the steps above.
Then, import all the cards you exported. If you select all and double-click, it will ask if you want to add them. You'll then have to add them to whatever groups you had set up.

  • My iMac will not support Yosemite. I need Mavericks. How can I get Mavericks?

My pre-2009 iMac will not support Yosemite. It has Snow Leopard. Apple should let me obtain the latest OS supporting the Apple computer. Any suggestions?

Mavericks is no longer available. You will need to use Yosemite. You can get Mountain Lion, however:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later.
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model
                 Identifier 5,1 or later.
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later.
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Or you can stay with Snow Leopard.

  • OS X Mountain Lion is not supported on my MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro is not supported by OS X Mountain Lion, but General Requirements are satisfied in my machine. So, I can't download OS X Mountain Lion from AppStore, but I want to buy it and install it on my MacBook Pro. How can I get it?

I have 2 Apple Macs, a Mac book purchased 2007 and a Mac pro G5 build year 2006 both running Leopard last year upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Due to various reasons I didn't get organised to upgrade to v10.7 (Lion) until early July but I noticed the next version was about to be released and I could upgrade from v10.6 (Snow Leopard) to v10.8 (Mountain Lion) so ok I can skip Lion.
I now find Mountain Lion will not run on either of my computers Apple tech support said sorry the architecture was changed around 2008 (no publicity about that) but I could upgrade to v10.7 (Lion) and still get some improvement.
My problem is could not find where to purchase Lion which is only available as a download, it had been replaced by Mountain Lion. When I Contacted Apple sales they informed me that lion is no longer available, advised me upgrade my computers!!
why can't I get Lion it was until mid July ?
Older Software released prior to Jan 1,1998 in the US and worldwide is available
    Not happy

  • Mail created w/ mountain Lion will not open in SL10.6.8, or OS X yosemite.

Mail created w/ mountain Lion will not open in SL10.6.8, or OS X yosemite.  How can I convert it to open?

After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before.  Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded.  It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly.  And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail?  A startup disk is not accessible for me right now.  Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website?

Just to add this : iWeb -- the app itself -- is still supported, updated only months ago and as part of the ilife '11 DVDs still widely spread even though it is not sold on the AppStore it is official part of iLife. It runs in Lion and there is zero issues with the app. So a training makes sense, doesn't it ?.
