[Lion] Windows partition gone missing

I recently updated to osx lion on my macbook. I found out that i cant boot to windows anymore by using the option key as i did before.
A lot of people seems to have this issue, but i didn't find any real solutions to this problem.
As in other posts its the probably the MBR table.
I installed rEFIt but it didn't solve my problem. But i got the report. Hope it helps.

What are my options here? I really didnt like the "erase and redo it" since i have important stuff in my windows partition.
Cant i just repair it?
Btw its windows 7 installed.
Tks for the help

There are workarounds. Like wait and see, and read, and let others experience help, which can take month or more, or wait for updates. Apple just posted a Lion Recovery Tool today.
Install Lion on another drive, not the internal drive. Backup and clone.
Then restore Lion and leave the partition tables intact has worked for more than a few.
Or even start by shrinking the size of Mac HFS volume alone, leaving some free space, and when Lion is done being installed, you should be fine. Find that on Cnet's MacFixit.
The new mail with its threaded conversations can have a high % cpu overhead esp. with any large email storage you have, and Mail was one of the weak links in 10.5 with its new SyncServices "feature."
Don't install an OS unless you need it and have time to play and deal with it; like on a test computer if you have one at disposal. Or on a 2nd hard drive - maybe that external with FW800.

  • Windows Partition gone after updating to Yosemite

Hello I have recently updated to Yosemite and was unaware of the bug that causes the partitions to disappear.
I have read threads and the steps are way too difficult to understand and all i see is coding and other things.
If anyone could help please (step by step) in a simple way.
Windows 7 Partition shows up as disk0s4.
    Macbook Pro 13' in 2012.
Have downloaded TestDisk but have no knowledge in how to use it.

And I have a couple of questions to the steps below:
    1. Delete the old entry and create a new entry at GPT#4. (Is this step done in testdisk? If it is, what are the steps to get to this step?)
    sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    p
    d
    4
    n
    4
    86923264
    538218489
    0700
    p
    w
    y
    2. You will need to reboot after the change, because the disk you are booted from is the one being modified. Reboot will rebuild disk0s4 using the start/end you entered.
    3. Run the dd command - sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C and check that the first line contains "R.NTFS". (Done in testdisk?)
    4. This is a tedious process and you want to check after the second 'p'rint command that it looks reasonable, before the 'w'rite and 'y'es to confirm. (Testdisk?)
    5. Once you a working GPT#4, a new hybrid MBR needs to be created which will overwrite what you see in your Fdisk output. This is also done using GPT Fdisk (Gdisk). (Download link to Gdisk?)
    6. a. Test 1 - Can you see your Bootcamp volume in Finder.
        b. Test 2 - Can you files in the Bootcamp volume?
        c. Test 3 - Can you see Bootcamp in your System Preferences -> Startup Disk.
        d. Test 4 - If Test 1-3 are successful, select Bootcamp and click on Restart. You may need Windows startup repair, if you see a hanging underline cursor at the top left corner of your screen. In most cases, it is not required.

I tried running deeper search via testdisk but I came across about 20 different MS data and thought I must've done something wrong. Thanks in advance!

Twenty entries may seem overwhelming, but checking each one using P - List Files should be fairly quick and painless. Most partitions will be damaged anyway.

  • Recover the lion recovery partition?

    Hi!
I had the similar problem, where my windows option went missing after installing Lion. I gave up trying to resolve it and did a clean installation on windows again by re-configuring my Windows partition & install Windows 7 on it. It seems to work well for now...
Apple should have warned us that the Windows partition will be unreadable when u install Lion. Hence, allowing users to back their files up on Windows environment before installing Lion.
Thank god I did not have any important files save in Windows.

    Who can help ?

I also was concerned about the early reports of 10.7 altering the Boot Camp partition id. I took The hatters advice and used the cloning method on two different MBPs (Vista & Win 7) with no problems at all.
FYI, below I have provided the steps I used to accomplish this process.
Use Yasu and Diskwarrior to prepare the existing Mac OSX 10.6.8 HDD partition.
Clone or update by smart clone to an ext HDD with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Restart from the cloned ext HDD and select it as the startup volume via System Preferences / Startup Disk.
Install 10.7 Lion on the cloned ext HDD
Install Lion 10.7.2 update on the ext HDD
Restart the OSX 10.7 ext HDD and test and adjust the preferences if needed.
When satisfied, clone the OSX 10.7 ext HDD back to the existing Mac HDD.
The Boot Camp partition will not be altered as to drive id which appeared to cause problems for a few people.
The recovery partition will be on the ext HDD and can be used for trouble shooting.
A more convenient way to have the recovery/reinstallation environment is to create a Lion install USB thumb drive.

It is very hard to just wreck a BC Partition. You can wipe the whole drive (Disk Utility) or you can erase it using BC Assistant (from your Mac Side). Otherwise it pretty much never happens. You say that you are un-tutored in BC, well HERE is your tutorial http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_install_windows_xp_on_my_mac_using_boot_ca mp_1.html
Lion is the most work-intensive OSX that Apple has ever released, (just in case you have not heard) so if you hate learning how stuff works, and how to fix software problems then you need to read these forums a LOT to see if Lion is a good choice for you....

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion erase my Windows partition?

    Dear all,
I know some one might have asked it but I just wanna re-confirm.
Would the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion erase my Windows partition? I am currently using Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro (Late 2010 Version) and I do not have parallel desktop. I asked the same question when Lion was released, but HK Apple Store said YES and Melbourne Apple Store said no. I am a bit confused now.
    Thank you for answering. Cheers!

    Nothing.
That said, you should ALWAYS have a backup as anything can happen at anytime.

I believe that Lion and Mountian Lion use BootCamp 4.0 and earlier versions used 3.0. I don't use BootCamp but from reading The link below you need to get new drivers, burn a cd and install. Check out #20 on this page.

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto.  I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system.  My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too.  If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

  • Mac OS X Lion Problems (Sound, Resolution, Missing Partition, and Crashes)

Ohia everybody! So recently I installed Mac OS X Lion (GM) on my Mac Mini. It's been installed for about 2 weeks, but I quickly noticed a couple of problems with it.
    Problem 1 - Screen Resolution:
When I had Snow Leopard installed and I held alt to switch into Windows, the menu that appeared to let you switch partitons resolution was correct. Now it seems to be 800x600. Same thing with the boot screen with the Apple logo. When the actual OS is booted up, the resolution is correct (1600x900). Why is it doing this with Lion and now when I had Snow Leopard?
    Problem 2 - Windows Partition:
Before I installed Lion, I had a Windows partition set up using BootCamp. I was able to see the Windows partition on my Macs desktop as well as my Mac partiton. Now it doesn't show up at all, and when I go to Disk Utility, it shows up as BOOTCAMP, and its greyed off. When I click on it and try to mount it, it just said that it couldn't be mounted. Nothing more. I can still boot into it just fine, but I can't view files, which is quite useful when transfering files between the operating systems.
    Problem 3 - Speakers Buzzing:
On Snow Leopard, when I went to play a sound, the speakers were completely quiet and the sound came out nicely. Now, the speakers will be quiet, and when I get a notification or something, the speakers will have a quiet buzzing sound and will continue buzzing for a few minutes after the sound is over. When I play another sound, they will start buzzing again. It never used to do this before Lion, so I'm sure its not the speakers. Hopefully someone has any info on this because I'm clueless.
    Problem 4 - Safari Crashes:
Last problem! Sometimes on Lion (not on Snow Leopard), if I leave Safari open for a little bit, it will randomly crash. It usually doesn't do it while I'm browsing, but if I'm uploading pictures or videos and I just leave it open, I will come back to my computer and it will say safari crashed.
    Note:
I always keep my computer up to date, and have googled all of these problems before with no help. Hopefully someone get help me fix any of these problems.

So I am not the only one with this issue. The sound of my imac g5 sounds buzzing as well. I am hoping for a fix from Apple soon.

  • Lion's emergency partition along with a Windows partition

I have an iMac 27 SSD with 2 partitions : one with my running Snow Leopard 10.6.8,  and a second one with Boot Camp Windows 7.
If I upgrade my Snow Leopard partition to Lion, will an emergency partition still be created by the Lion installer on my SSD ?
The reason I ask is that I am told that a Windows partition will only be bootable IF there are ONLY two partitions on the disc.
So, what if Lion comes and creates a third partition ?
    Two sub-questions, then :
    - Is it possible to PREVENT Lion from creating this emergency partition ?
    - Is it possible to make the Lion Installer create this emergency partition on another disc ?

After upgrading to OS Mavericks, I realized that the Partition for Windows is gone. I have really important data on this drive without a back up. sure pretty simple.  make a backup of your current settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US
then restore device from old backup you need pics off of
    then import pics to computer

you may need to save pics to camera roll first
then restore the new backup and sync pics back to phone via itunes

  • Upgrading to Mac OS X Lion will affect my windows partition..??

    Hi everyone,
I bought my Macbook pro last week. I used boot camp to install Windows 7 pro.
I hesitate to update mac for fear that the Windows partition will be erased..Is it the case..??
    Thank your for your help

No just leave it. It's unaffected by the lion update. if you edited your Bootcamp partition afterwards look at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
Do make sure that your Mac disk is error free (run disk utility) and that you have > 15gb free.
