Lion won't play .avi or .wmv correctly

I installed Lion yesterday, and suddenly Quicktime can't play the video part of .avi or .wmv files (it can still play the audio). I re-installed Flip4Mac but that didn't fix it. VLC still works, but now I can't view the files in Safari b/c Quicktime is responsible for playing them there.
Any advice on what to do?
Thanks!
Edit: I also re-installed Perian, no changes.

Normaly QuickTime doesn't support AVI or DVIX out of the box,
you need to install some plugins.
but as we all have done an upgrade to lion these plugins aren't compatible with LION ANYMORE.
they'll bring an update asap I suppose.
but in the mean time download this app: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It's called vlc player.
It's available on every platform, support airplay plugins, and every fileformat is support cause it's an open source project.
ps: it supports subtittles as you want and .MKV video's aswell.
it uses a lot less Memory then quicktime while watching a AVI movie or 720 p or above.

  • Quick Time (Mountain Lion) won't play .AVI files.

Since all of you probably already know the information I typed in the headtitle, I have a question. So obviously .avi files can not be played on this version of Quick Time that comes with Mountain Lion, but, would buying a Quick Time Pro solve my problem? I'm ready to pay 30$ for the program, but first I'd like to know would it enable me to play .avi and all sorts of other video files? Ofcourse I read it does play all sorts of files including .avi, but I'd like to hear it from somebody who actually uses Quick Time Pro on Mountain Lion. Thanks for your help in advance!

P.S. I already have tried VLC, I use it but that's not the solution I'm asking for. Nor that, nor other programs such as MplayerX. I'm interested only in Quick Time while it never breaks, deinterlaces my footy nice and is very simple and user friendly.

You don't need to buy Quick Time Pro.  Quick Time Pro is just a paid add-on to add features to QuickTime Player 7.  You don't need the Pro features for just playing.  The player in your Applications folder is Quick Time X.  QuickTime Player 7 should be in your Utilities folder (which is inside yoir Aplicatioins folder).  If it's not there, download it from:
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923>
QuickTime Player 7 will play .AVI files if you install Perian
    <http://perian.org>
then replace its A52 codec component

  • MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files.

Since "upgrading" to Lion my MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files, all I get is a black screen and the audio.  It's so frustrating!!
I've read many other posts all along the same lines and wherever possible I've tried to follow the advice which has been given but nothing works.    I've updated all the drivers I can and I've even reinstalled Lion, nothing makes a difference.
I'm not really looking for any more advice, all I want is someone from Apple to read these posts, realise there is problem and get working on a fix or update.
I had no problems when running Snow Leopard and it would seem, looking at everyone else's problems, that the common issue is Lion.   Seriously, this is one area where Lion is a backwards step.   It should just work (like most things from Apple), but it doesn't.
Personally I believe there is a problem with Lion but from what I've found out from speaking to friends with other Apple kit, this might be a random issue only affecting some people as some have said they've had no problems while others have had the same issues as me.    One guy reinstalled Lion and it resolved the issue for him, I've not been as lucky.
As I say, I'm not really looking for more advice, simply some sort of update from Apple to fix it.   PLEASE!!!

This is a peer-to-peer user forum. Perhaps you would see more action if you and others would file a formal "Bug" report with Apple QuickTime technical people rather than repeatedly reporting a possible problematic problem which may or may not affect others on a random basis. Since you aren't seeking further advice here is what I have observed. Not being a regular WMV file user, I had to create my own sample file to test—a WMV 9 file containing WMV3 compressed video and WMA2 compressed audio. Since I normally use QT 7 as my primary media player, I also stored the WMV data in its partially decompressed form in an MOV file container to avoid pre-playback delays in "classic" player routines and also provide a secondary playback test of MOV wrapped content. These files play as follows using the Flip4Mac component/player support and uncoded URL uploads:
QT 7.6.6 "Open File" - both files play correctly.
QT 7.6.6 "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
QT X.1 "Open File" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file plays video without audio.
QT X.1 "Open Location" - WMV file appears to open but plays with "black" screen and no audio. MOV file plays video without audio.
VLC "Open File" - WMV plays correctly. MOV file doesn't open,
VLC "Open URL" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file appears to open but nothing plays.
MPEG Streamclip "Open File" - both files play correctly.
MPEG Streamclip "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
GarageBand - WMV file will not import but MOV file does.
iTunes - WMV file will not import. MOV file container is accepted but as soon as iTuness sees the compression formats, it aborts import.
Safari - WMV file URL auto-downloads and playes in the QT X.1 Player. The MOV file URL opens and plays in Safari.
As you can see from these results the files do play but are subject to many different constrints based on old/new video technology support, independent QT subsets and/or container trapping constraints. In short, individual user results will depend on presence/absence of component support, actual compression formats, file container, application being used, and how the application is being used. Unfortunately, most users here can't or won't provide the prerequisite information or a sample file for independent examination. This makes it next to impossible to give advice in these matters or categorize the specific nature of the problem.

  • HT3775 My Macbook Air (still with Lion) will not play .avi video files

My Macbook Air (still with Lion) will not play .avi video files (brought over from an older PC where they play with another viewer). This site implies Quicktime Player should be able to do so. Is there a codec or something else I'm supposed to download?

I had found this through other threads, but it is what worked, even allowed my AVI files to be played in PowerPoint. Changing to 32-bit encryption did not work, BTW.

'Music' displays but won't play. Settings appear correct and iPhone (3G)  is selected for output.  Startup screen intermittently displays with the lower pause/play volume bar for no clear reason..... developed at the same time as play failure.  Ideas????

    Thank you for the replies.
Appearane of 'Music' functions (I>>   > II   <<I,   plus volume slider)  on the lock/log in screen (when first turning on the iPhone) thus far seems without pattern, i.e. regardless of which if any applications are up in the background, and indeed even when all have been quit.
All visual aspects of 'Music' appear normal after launch including the title scroll across the top in vertical mode. However, while pressing play (>) converts the play (>) icon to pause (II), selected song does not play and the elapsed time bar (upper end between the track count and the repeat/shuffle icons) remains stationary at 0:00 or at any point to which it is dragged.  When using home sharing this same problem persists regardless of what output is selected.
Hope that may prompt a thought somewhere.

  • HT3775 Quicktime 10.2 (603.6), it won't play .AVI files

I have Quicktime 10.2 (603.6), it won't play .AVI files, tells me "file format isn't recognized" the above article says it does play .AVI files, what gives?

There isn't a codec installed which can handle that specific AVI file; AVI is a container, not a format. Try installing Perian.

  • Quicktime X won't play .avi files

I have several video files that are in the .avi format, and Quicktime won't play them. Every time I try to open them it says 'the movie can't be played'. I have visited the support site on Apple after clicking the 'Tell me more' button on the dialogue box that appears. I have downloaded Perian, Flip4Mac and DivX, none of which have solved the issue. I can't even open the file in Quick Look - it just plays the audio and not the video.
Does anyone have any ideas? Please help.
    Thanks

VLC also does not play the file. The error message I receive when trying to open in VLC is: "VLC does not support the audio or video format 'VP70'. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this." I also have the option to show details, so if they would be helpful then I'll post them, but I hope there is enough information in this post for you. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Quicktime Player won't play avi files all of a sudden

All of a sudden Quicktime Player won't play my avi files. They worked previously. I could play them with Quicktime 7 with or without Perian. I'm running 10.6.4.
They'll run fine on my MacBook and I don't have Perian installed on it.
    Any ideas?

I just uninstalled Flip4Mac and everything is working as it's supposed to. Very strange. Perhaps a conflict with Perian? But then again, QT didn't play the avi files with Perian installed. So, I guess the conflict is with Flip4Mac and something else.
    Thanks anyway

  • QT Pro won't play avi or mov movie

I've download the latest QT Pro but it still won't play the video portion of an AVI or MOV video. What else do I need. I find it incredible that you have to go to this much work to play a video on a MAC.

I just updated QTpro and I can't get audio to play on avi or mov. It's started out and then kept disappearing and now nothing. Major drag.

  • JMStudio won't play .avi files - mpeg-2 works fine

Why doesn't JMStudio play .avi files?
A small application that I created with JMF 2.1.1 has the same trouble.
My .avi files can be played successfully with mediaplayer and also zoom player but JMStudio chokes on them. Why?
I want to create a two-pane player for side-by-side video comparison with JMF but I don't want to start the effort if simple .avi playback is not possible.
Sun's JMF 'supported format' page shows that all forms of .avi are at least 'playable' - yet my files are not.
I have several mpeg-2 files that are playable in JMStudio and also in my simple app - so I know that the code is working.
There are several old threads on this forum that ask this question but none of the threads give a decent answer.
    Please help.
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

    Got it working.
Apparently, JMF can't handle type-1 .avi files but it can handle type-2 .avi files.
Nero and Sony-DvGate both create type-1 .avi files in the capture process from a DV camcorder.
    I found a (Windows) utility - DvConverter - that will convert a type-1 .avi file to type-2.
I'm now able to play these type-2 .avi files in JMFStudio and also in my own prototype player.
Surprisingly, the FramePositioningControl functions also work - skip() and seek() !!!
I'm currently working on eliminating the 'comb-teeth' effect that exists in both JMFStudio and my own player.
I've read that this effect is the result of interlacing artifacts but my experience has shown that it also has a lot to do with the codec that's running. In windows, installing, un-installing, and re-installing codecs has a tendancy to mess with the registry in unpleasant ways resulting in a lot of time wasted trying to get rid of this 'comb-tooth' effect.
Andrew, do you know of a foolproof way to solve this problem on windows?
    Thanx,
    skigrinder

  • Quicktime 7 won't play avi files

can someone please tell me why this is?
It's only stopped playing them since its been upgraded
i just get a white screen and the message that there might be a missing component?
Sorry if this question has already been posted!
    Please HELP
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If QuickTime is set to play avi files in System Preferences, then the avi might not be one that QuickTime can play. There are several proprietary avi codecs. You might try VLC player or some other player that can play all the different kinds of avi codecs.

  • Can you get an iMac to play .AVI or .WMV video?

I can't find a list of supported codecs on Apple. I have a ton of video files in .AVI and .WMV formats. I don't want to spend days converting to Quicktime to be able to share video clips with a friend who owns a Mac.  My camera shoots in .AVI.
I've been thinking about getting  a Mac, but would that mean any video I shoot in the future is automatically incompatible with Mac? This would seem to be a common format (the .AVI), anyone know why it's not compatible?
Any ideas on how to work around this problem? Thanks
    answered--thanks

Perian or Flip4Mac can handle some but not all files of those types. AVI is a container, not a format, and therefore nothing is assured of opening all AVIs. Some WMV files contain DRM and can't be used in Mac OS X.

  • Quicktime on lion won't play

i recently got lion for my 2009 mac that i've always kept up to date with software updates and so forth. well when i go to play any movie in a clearly formated avi it says that quicktime doesn't support this video because it cant find the codec or something like that but before lion it would work without a hitch... any ideas how to correct this problem?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Quicktime 7.5.5 won't play .avi on MacBook Air w/flip4mac and perian

I have .avi files that are Apple - Microsoft Video 1 codec. They play fine on an Intel based desktop using Tiger and Quicktime 7.5.5 without plugins. But won't work on my MacBook Air (white screen). Installing the Flip4Mac and Perian plugins didn't solve the problem. WRAW codecs play fine. "MacGenius" no help. Any thoughts?

I have experienced the same issue on my MacBook Air with Mac OS X 10.5.5 and QuickTime 7.5.5.
The video format is "Apple - Microsoft video 1" according to QT inspector.
The AVI file plays fine on a MacBook Pro (Early 2008), MacBook Pro (Mid 2007), and a MacPro (1st Gen). All of these have the very latest software updates from Apple as of today (10-10-2008).
I erased the MBA and installed the original 10.5.1 from the restore DVD. *The video played back correctly*. Then I applied all available Apple updates (which includes QT 7.5.5) and the video only displays a White screen in the QuickTime player. (No other third party applications were installed.)
I have not backtracked yet to determine if it video fails as soon as QT 7.5.5 installed.

  • TS3961 Quicktime in Lion won't Play MPG/MPEG-2 format Video

I have OS X Lion but quicktime still says "QuickTime Player can't open "M2U02230.MPG" because a required codec isn't available."  Does anyone know what codec is needed?  Apple says that Lion will play MPEG-2/MPG format and MPEG-2 Playback Component is no

No, Quicktime does not natively play muxed formats.
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
