Lion won't stop opening stuff - one user

This works as expected on other users on the same machine - But this one user ALWAYS opens 7 apps for the last week or so. One app is Excel it it brings up an error (Excel saved changes to the file before the application quit unexpectedly) It doesn't matter what I do - close the apps or the below I always get the same apps open in the exact same windows.
I've tried unchecking the "Reopen Windows..." box as I log out. And I've also tried unchecking the similar box in the preferences. I think I need to delete a preference somewhere. I know how to get at the Library folder - I just need to know what to delete 8-)
It certainly didn't take long for this to go corrupt. This user account has only been on here a month or so.
Oh this is on a Mini in case that matters... I've got 6 users here at the moment. This user came her from a PPC machine via TM and Migration Assistant...
Thanks in advance!

It is one of the over 250 new features of the World's Most Advanced Operating System called Resume.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
Press return.
To turn off Resume globally...
chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"

  • One application won't open for one user

We are doing a rollout of Macbook Pros to a group of people. We have used migration assistant for 20 computers. One application will not open for one user on each of the computers. The applicaiton will open for users that are added, but not the admin user that the application was originally installed. We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application with the same results. The one user can not log in. The permissions look right for all files.

How about clarifying some things for me? Does each machine have a different admin user? What user installed the application that won't open (you say there is only one?) How many users on each machine - one or many? How many admin users are there? How many users are Standard or Managed users? What user "can not log in?" Is this on one machine or all machines? Which is the application that won't open, where is it installed, what are the permissions for the application, what are the permissions for the folder in which it's installed?
Are these computers on a network or operating standalone or does each person in the group have their own separate machine?
From where did you migrate for these 20 computers and why did you use Migration Assistant? MA is not the correct tool for doing a multi-system configuration. This is usually done using a net-based installation from a machine running OS X Server or from an XServe or by creating a standard system DVD and installing via ASR.

  • PowerPoint file won't open under one user account, but does under another account

    Hello,
I have a 10.9.5 macbook pro here that will not open a Powerpoint file under one user account. It is up-to-date with Software updates and Office 2008 is up-to-date as well. When I try to open the PowerPoint file, I get the message, "PowerPoint closed unexpectedly" and I can choose to Reopen (which opens a blank presentation) or OK (which closes PowrPoint). I have tried double-clicking the file from the Desktop where is resides, File --> Open from within PowerPoint and also saved it to a flash drive and tried opening from there. It does open under the admin account on the same machine and it will also open on other machines. Other PowerPoint files are opening fine...it's just a problem with the one file. The user has Read & Write privilege to the file. I tried Repairing Disk Permissions, I have tried deleting microsoft plist files, and lastly, have re-installed Office 2008. At this point, I can only think to try deleting the user account and re-adding it, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I go that route.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Safari won't open for one user but does for other

I have 2 users on my mac. Out of nowhere, the Safari application will not open when I am logged in but works fine with my other user (where I am currently writing from). When I'm logged in, it hangs but the application never opens...just the searching colored ball over the application headings at the top making have to force quit to do anything else. I have the most recent version of everything and haven't even updated or installed anything within the last week. Just stopped working. I've read many different suggestions about removing plug ins and other files from various libraries. I do not have the Leopard install disks to try re-installing as it was installed at the genius bar for me as my DVD drive does not read any install disks. I'm at a total loss. How can it work with one user and not another--it's the same computer...Thanks.

OK--So I kept searching through all the discussions for other possible solutions....each time removing some file and putting it on my desktop and trying again. Well something worked. I have the following folders now on my desktop that were removed
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > Downloads.plist
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > History.plist
Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Safari > formvalues
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
    Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > Cookies > cookies.plist
Hard drive > Library > InputManagers
Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > InputManagers
    Hard drive > Users > Your username> Library > Caches > com.apple.safari
    Hard drive > Users > Your username> Library > Caches >Metadata > Safari
The last file I dragged to the desktop was the form values folder. No idea what actually worked but it's up and running and actually moving faster than before.
Question now is do I trash all these folders I dragged out to the desktop? Or do some need to go back? Any other safari maintenance I should do now that it's open? I emptied the cache and cleared the history. Just trying to be preventative. Thanks iBod for your suggestions and I hope this helps someone else as it appears that many have had this issue.

  • Why won't preview open on some users?

For some reason, the Preview app won't open on one of the users on my Mac, it works on mine but on another it bounces as if it is trying to open and then opens the dialogue box "Sorry, Preview quit unexpectadly", asking me if I want to re-open or quit, if I press re-open the same thing happens again. I've looked at the permissions for the app, seems fine, looked at the users library and deleted any Preview data under the preferences folder and ran disk permissions, to no avail.
Has anyone got any pointers as to what else I could do, as they really need the Preview app up and working to print PDF's?
    Thanks
    Zach

Glad it is working. As for the ownership on your home folder, before tinkering you might try running the list all, long command and see what it reports:
    ls -al /Users
I have two users, myself and test account. Here's what mine says:
    NoobiX:~ francine$ ls -al /Users
    total 88
    drwxr-xr-x@ 7 root admin 238 Jan 26 15:01 .
    drwxrwxr-t@ 37 root admin 1326 Feb 23 11:35 ..
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0 Sep 23 17:43 .localized
    drwxrwxrwt 16 root wheel 544 Feb 14 11:29 Shared
    drwxr-xr-x@ 44 francine staff 1496 Feb 26 08:27 francine
    drwxr-xr-x@ 16 revelator staff 544 Feb 23 14:58 revelator
You can see that the "francine" home folder belongs to francine, group staff, the same as is reported by the id command. Let's see what yours says. Yours should say Miller, group Miller.
The numerical uid and gid depend on the particular user and group. The 501 is the first admin user created. The second user is 502. The old private groups from Tiger had the same number for the group as for the user, thus the 502 user would be a member of the 502 group. The staff group is 20, the admin group is 80. What you are getting (502 and 502) means that at some point you deleted the very first user and started using a second account, and that you upgraded to Leopard rather than doing an erase and install, as I ended up doing (after getting disgusted with all the bolixed up group permissions problems). Leopard switched back to the UNIX standard of having users be members of the staff group rather than private groups. I know, more information than you ever wanted to have!
Leopard also introduced the new Guest account, which can actually be quite handy. If you have someone who is visiting and wants to use your computer to check their email or do a little web surfing you can log yourself out and let them log in as Guest. The permissions are fairly restricted, there is no password, and all their stuff is deleted when they log out.

  • New software only opens in one user account

I just downloaded 'Inspiration 9' software onto our family MacBook Pro. Software key all entered, etc... Opens fine, doesn't say that it's the free 30 day trial any longer...
However, just logging on as another user, I get a message along the lines of 'insufficient priviledges to open this trial version of inspiration. contact system administrator for more information. Well, all accounts for me and my wife (two for me - one personal one for a few works bits to keep them seperate) and just the one for my wife, both have administrator access. I have tried various things, but cannot seem to get this to work on any more than the one account. The licence is for one computer.
If anyone can help I'd be REALLY thankful!
    Mark.

Contact the developer of Inspiration for advice. It sounds as though you inadvertently installed it for only one user, and may need to reinstall it, but the developer will know best.

  • Outlook 2010 Email Arrives Opened From One User

I have a client that has SBS2011 (Exchange 2010) and Office 2010. When they get an email from one users on the same domain it shows up as read.  I have tested it and see it happen every time.  This was not an issue until about 3 weeks ago.  No idea if there was a change.
I have exported out the rules and deleted them.  No joy.
I have checked and there are no odd Addins that look like they would cause this.
I know he checks his email on his iPhone.  They show up read there too.
After about 2 hours of searching on this I have yet to find a solution.
Any of you guys have thoughts on this?

PowerShell is good for a lot of things, but when you're in the midst of writing – and rewriting – a script, keeping a bottle of Advil in close quarters may feel like a necessity. But there's an easier way.According to Petri, Microsoft's prepackaged script snippets can save you headaches and time.In an official blog post, Microsoft explains that snippets give you an easy way to "paste arbitrary text into theISE console and script editor, right where you need it." Snippets help improve the productivity, discoverability, and usability of any given script. Petri walks you through how to discover Microsoft's prepackaged script snippets and, for the more ambitious, how to add your own. More than that, however, Petri gives you prewritten cmdlets that help you expedite the process of discovering snippets and loading them. If you've used...

  • How do I stop more than one user opening the same file?

I'm about to install Lion Server and we're concerned that more than one person will be able to open the same file at the same time. Can this be prevented? If not it seems to make the concept of a server pointless?
Any help appreciated. Already annoyed I have to phone and order 10.7 Server as it's no longer on the App Store. Can't run 10.8 as the Mac Pro is too old and Apple have cut us off.

The file server software supports file locking, but multiple file access is application-dependent. In some cases it's entirely valid for multiple users to access the same file. It's up to the application to allow or deny this.
Ordinarily, if an application requires exclusive access it should flag the file accordingly when it opens the file. This will prevent other users from opening the file. However, it's not up to the server to do this.

  • Safari won't open for one user...but will for another

Hi, I have been running Safari successfully on my iMac for as long as I can remember. On Leopard 10.5.6 (because of compatibility issues I am no higher...). Anyway, yesterday Safari 'unexpectedly quit' one day and has stopped working completely. I click the icon (from either the dock or applications folder), it opens and I get a blank window and nothing else. I click and hold on the icon and see that the application is not responding.
For the purposes of troubleshooting I logged in as another user and tried Safari: boom, opened straight off. So, I tried deleting:
    1. safari.plist file
    2. Cookies folder
    3. Bookmarks
    Ummm...any other ideas anyone?

    HI,
You need to update your system software to 10.5.8 in order to run the latest version of Safari as noted here. http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ *Don't download from that link.* Go to your Apple Menu/Software Updates.
*This update may restart your Mac several times after the update. It's okay!* Just let your Mac do it's job.
After you have finished with the update, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • IMovie won't open for one user.

Hi, I recently installed the iLife 09 on my machine and all was fine.
I am now having problems opening iMovie to the extent that the icon bounces and then I get the box saying that the application has quite but nothing else is effected.
I set up a guest account on the machine and open iMovie and it was fine.
I seem to need to stop iMovie looking for the last project that was open as I guess that it has corrupted in some way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
I would delete iMovie preference file. Then iMovie makes a new and fresh one.
    You find it.
    Macintosh HD (boot-drive)/Users/Your Log-in account/Library/Preferences
    and is named.
com.apple.iMovie.plist eventually it can be named
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist or
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
When iMovie IS NOT running - move this/them out to desktop and now start iMovie.
    Yours Bengt W

  • One project won't open for either user, another will open for one user only

My wife and I are new iMovie users. I have imported three projects (#1-3) from our camera, she has imported two projects (#4 & #5) - all to a shared folder. The first project I imported (#1) cannot be opened by either of us. In addition, my wife cannot open the second project that I imported (#2). We get the following error: "The project could not be opened, because the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permission are incorrect." We can both open projects #3-5.
I have checked the permissions settings on all 5 projects. All are same, Read and Write priveleges for both of us. Anybody seen this before? Am I missing something?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    1. You said the projects were all saved "to a shared folder." Do you mean THE Shared folder? Your Mac's Users folder should list two Users, plus a folder named "Shared". Is that the folder you mean?
    2. The trouble is that an iMovie project isn't actually a file. It's a special kind of folder called a package, which contains other files and folders. (To look inside the package, Control-Click on the package icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu.)
    3. When YOU are the user and you create a new iMovie project, the package and everything it contains is configured with you as the owner. You are the designated owner of all the items that comprise the project. No one else can Write to the project.
    4. To change that, you have to change the project package into a normal Finder folder, adjust its permissions and the permissions of all the contents of that folder, then change it back into an iMovie package.
    Here's how:
In the Finder, choose Finder > Preferences. Click Advanced and turn ON "Show all file extensions".
The name of your iMovie project "My Sample Project" is now displayed as "My Sample Project.iMovieProject" in the Finder.
Remove ".iMovieProject" from the project name, removing the period. When the Finder asks, say OK.
The project package has now turned into a folder. Select the folder and choose Get Info.
Set Others permissions to "Read & Write". Then click "Apply to enclosed items". When the Finder asks, say OK.
Select the folder name again and add the extension ".iMovieProject" to the name. The folder will change back to an iMovie package.
The package will now allow anyone to Read and Write to the project.
    Karl
PS: This solution isn't very handy, obviously, but it does the job. A better solution is to buy an external hard drive, and configure it to Ignore permissions. (In the Get Info window for the disk.) That lets both users save projects to the drive without permission issues.

  • Terminal won't stop opening two windows.

Every time I open Terminal, it opens two windows. One window has a bunch of text at the top that appears to be old commands(perhaps that I had typed? I don't remember all that I've typed into Terminal since the beginning of time ) in grey and then the normal Terminal prompt in the usual green(that's the theme I have) after all the text. The second window is in a fullscreen space thingy(Lion's mission control interface) and it looks similar except the text is different and there is a LOT more of it.
I'm not quite sure what to do to make this stop. I've tried deleting the plist file for Terminal. I've tried restarting the computer. I've tried closing both windows, opeing a new one, positioning how I'd like it posistioned, then quitting Terminal by holding alt/option and cliking "Quit and Keep All Windows" from the Terminal menu.
Is there a place where there are setting files for an app's window positions/defaults?
It may also be good to mention, as it seems possibly relevant, that every time I open iPhoto, it opens in a fullscreen space much like the second Terminal window. I've tried similar things on iPhoto to get IT to stop doing this.
    Thanks for any help!

Okay, so I actually found a solution to the problem!
I cannot claim it as my own since I found it on another discussion page as well as CNET, but I'll post what I did here for others to see.
    The two helpful pages were:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20083707-263/managing-mac-os-x-lions-applic ation-resume-feature/
    and
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15859853#15859853
    What I did was:
    1. Enable "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" under General in System Preferences(I don't know for sure if this is necessary, but it seemed harmless with my new found knowledge as you'll see in a moment)
    2. Navagate to "~/Library/Saved Application State/" in Finder
    3. Find the folder named "com.apple.Terminal.savedState"
    4. Move it to the trash
This resets the state that the application uses to open each time it opens, when you open it now, it'll recreate the folder
    5. Launch Terminal
    6. Open the Get Info dialog for the newly created "com.apple.Terminal.savedState" and tick the "Lock" checkbox
This prevents the contents of the folder from being changed, resultantly preventing ONLY Terminal from saving the state of it's windows on closing.
Not only did this solve THIS problem, but it opened up some cool options:
-By Locking any of these folders, one can keep a sort of template for how they'd like the windows of an application to open every time.
-One can leave on the "Reopen windows" preference but select applications for which they do not wan't it to work. It is a semi useful feature, and I can understand why it was added, it just seems like an oversigt that it was only a global or no feature.
-One can reset the window options of any trouble making apps in the future.
Note: This also solved the problem I was having with iPhoto!

  • Premiere Pro CS6 stopped working, for one user profile

So Premiere Pro CS6 wouldn't open today. Opened fine yesterday, and the days before that. The program didn't crash yesterday or close improperly. I just get the logo splash screen, but I don't see the usual text stream of applications starting up on it. After a long time I get a Windows message saying it can't open the program.
    - I used Bridge to update to the latest version. No help.
    - I made sure Quicktime was updated.
    - I cleared the preferences by moving the whole My Documents\Adobe\Premiere Pro\6.0 folder somewhere else (as a backup). Next time I tried starting the program it created a new \6.0 folder but that's as far as it went.
    - I deleted AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro. Starting the program recreated the folder, made a Trace Database file but only put two entries in it:
         DynamicLink     1     5
         FE.WinInit.LocPlugins 1     5
And then it stops there. No other files created.
    - Tried starting the program holding the Shift Key, and again with the Alt key, and again with both. No change.
    - Rebooted after every change.
I tried logging out as the video user account and logging in with my personal account, and then Premier Pro opened just fine.
Problem is, I need it to work on the video user account because it was created specifically for our video editing PC. Our company logins also tie into our email and other programs. This one was created specifically so more than one person could share Premiere Pro settings and resources, and there was a battle with our IT to get it because they despise generic accounts.
I've seen other threads here mentioning startup problems but the solutions listed there don't work for me. Manually trashing the \6.0 folder didn't help. I don't have a .pref file or Preferences folder other than the \6.0 one. I haven't made any changes to the PC. The video drivers must be OK or it wouldn't start under the other user account. How do I fix this one?

This was Microsoft patch week... did you install Windows updates?
•What is your exact brand/model graphics adapter (ATI or nVidia or ???)
•What is your exact graphics adapter driver version?
•Have you gone to the vendor web site to check for a newer driver?

  • Some keys stopped working for one user account

    Dear all,
since a while (I can't say since when exactly) some of the keys stopped working: left control, left shift, and the tab key. In the beginning the caps lock didn't work as well, but it was my own setting. All other then the three listed work OK. As described in some KB articles I checked all settings for universal access, localisation, keyboard, mouse, and keyboard-shortcuts (all standard). I completely disassembled the keyboard (aprox. 50 screws!) cleaned it and checked the connections between the keys on the printed circuit. Everything looks good. Then my wife told me that she does not have the problem and indeed, in other user accounts it is all working OK. It means that it should be a setup problem in my profile. The keyboard viewer is showing every activated (pressed) key, but not the three that are not working - which is only consequent. When I disable the caps-lock then the keyboard viewer doesn't show this key being pressed either. My conclusion is that there must be a keyboard filter below the application level. Now I'm stuck.
    Help appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Kurt.

Yup, odds were against me choosing the right item on the first go
Log back into your problem account.
Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder. It's not as daunting as it looks.
    1. Go to Users/yourname//Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO, Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.) If not, put your Fonts folder back.
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    • Go to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    • Navigate to YourHome/Library.
    • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
(Note:The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.)
    4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

  • Garageband '08 stopped working for one user account

I'm running Garageband '08 (4.1.1) on an early 2008 iMac (8,1) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
I recently tried to open a project I started a couple of months ago and Garageband has become unusable.  It will open the project and all of the tracks are visible, however, the entire program is super sluggish and the project will not actually play.  You can press "Play" but it will play about 1 beat before it freezes again.
So here's the list of things I've tried..........
Tested the same project(s) using another user account.  Garageband behaves normally and the projects all play nicely.   "So I've got that goin' for me"
I've also tested other programs that use a lot of system resources like iMovie, Final Cut Express, and some 3D modeling/home design software (Sketchup and Sweet Home 3D).  These all work fine.  While running Garageband the Activity Monitor shows no major system use (CPU I thinks was less than 20%).
I've tried using Disk Utility to verify and repair Permissions and verify and repair the disk.  While doing the disk repair I did get a message stating that there were errors that required the original install disk to repair.  I did use the install disk and it did successfully repair the errors.
I've also tried deleting all of the preference files for Garageband.  I've actually done this multiple times after trying some of the other fixes above (figured give it a clean start).
I've uninstalled Garageband and re-installed it from the original system discs.
Since I'm posting here now you can assume that all of the above attempts have been unsuccessful.
    Any thoughts?
Bonus Question:  I also have Garageband running on my iPad but Garageband '08 on my Mac doesn't let you exchange files back and forth.  I planned to upgrade to a version that does, but before I did they released the new version that won't run on Snow Leopard.  I'm not sure my iMac will run the newer OS well so I'd like to stay on Snow Leopard if possible.  Is there a way to find an older version of Garagband that will let me exchange projects with my iPad, but not make me upgrade my iMac OS?
    Thanks!
