Liquid cooled G5's - what models???

Hi,
Can someone please confirm what models were liquid cooled? I need to buy a G5 but do NOT want a liquid cooled system. I think I should be OK with a dual core 2.3GHz but I hope someone can confirm that this is air/fan cooled.

Only G5s running at 2.5 GHz and above were liquid cooled.
Therefore, the 2.3 GHz model you're looking at is air cooled.

My 2.5Ghz G5 wasn't starting up so I reset the SMU earlier today. When I was putting it back together, I found green liquid on the rear handle (leg). I'm backing up my hard drive right now. What should I do now? If I take my G5 to the Apple Store, do they fix it even if I don't have Apple Care?

Right before the Imac repair extension program went into effect, a lot of folks like yourself opened countless cases with Apple to express their displeasure.
You did a good thing. I know Apple well enough that if this is a widespread problem they will take care of it. Remember, on these boards you generally hear from folks with problems so you will see a bunch of posts about leaks.
I never felt the need for AppleCare until my first PowerBook G4. Been getting it ever since. When you need it it is a blessing, that is for sure.

Liquid cooled G5 issue

I have a dual 2.5ghz G5 Power Mac which recently started to make a horrid noise which I think was coming from the pump for the liquid cooling system. There was a sort of liquid sloshing sound and a whine like you get when your car windscreen cleaning system has run out of fluid.
I checked for coolant leaks and found nothing. I took the machine in to an Apple Service Center and they have now told me that the CPUs need replacing at a cost of £700. I don't trust this diagnosis. The machine ran fine, albeit at a higher temperature than normal.
I'm not interested in paying half what I paid for the machine brand new just to replace CPUs, particularly for a machine that is discontinued.
Can anyone offer me some suggestions as to what I can do about the machine?

why does apple not have a uniform repair policy with these failed machines? Why do I need to speak with a manager and pursue all these avenues to deal with what seems to me a faulty piece of machinery that I have built system of peripherals around?
Manager at apple store has agreed to wave $100 diagnostic fee and to cover half cost of $710 repair bill. Not feeling great with the idea of paying $355+ in repairs for a computer that will probably start leaking once I put it back into high gear crunching data. . .

this thing is loud as hell since day one. I'm not a heavy user, but I do work with grapchics (photoshop mostly).
had to add 16Gb RAM, ssd for OS, 3 secondary hdd's for storing, hd 7870 asus, 2x hp monitors..
anyways, I'm looking for ways to make it work more silent. and heard about "liquid cooling" available for z420.
1 - is it worth getting? will it make it work more silent (while in normal workload / idle mode)?
2 - would it be possible to get myself a different brand of liquid cooling suitable for this mashine? point out some pls.

I have not tried the liquid cooling as of yet, http://homepage.mac.com/steve.smedley/Personal9.html, (saw the same kits at Comp USA), but did settle for the verax fan kit.
I recently upgraded my MDD FW800 1GHz single cpu (133MHz bus) to a dual 1GHz using a new module meant for an Xserve with with the same bus speed.
It essentially turned my reasonably quiet Mac into a wind tunnel with temps running at 134˚F to 136˚F running idle, and as much as 138˚F under a full load.
The Verax kit has lowered my temps, right now running at 127˚F with just Safari open, and running as high as 129˚ to 130˚F under a heavy load, but not as noisey. The 120mm fan now just runs at a lower constant speed which is alot quieter, my power supply fans are another story and they are next on the list, right now they are making the most noise everything else is a much quieter whoosh of air.
The Verax kit is quiet, considering I have now have 5 fans in my Mac and the power supply fans are now my only noise makers, a constant steady irritating noise at that.
Just a note about the Verax fan kit, they include a 80mm fan to replace the 120mm, I opted not to use it because I wanted more intake for inside the case, the one they sent looks like a piece of crap, and I know the cfm had to be much lower than the 120mm.

Processor removal help: G5 liquid cooled

I am looking for some help on removing the heat sync/ processor on a dual 2.5 with the liquid cooled unit.
The 8 CPU Heatsink Allen screws 2.5 mm. that sit in the "Lagshields" are loosened, but the CPU unit still is being held down by more fasteners?
Which other fasteners ( the torx screws?) need loosening to be able to lift the CPU unit free of the board ?
Has anybody done this that can remember the procedure.

Thanks to all who provided help on this. I did in the end get a copy of the Service Source for the model I was working on (a late 2004 2.5 dual LCS Heat Sink model) which made all the difference. This document is essential. Thanks to a discussion user who had a copy! In my case I needed to replace a blown PSU (not an overly difficult task for anyone who is proficient in removing and replacing components)
While I understand the logic for Apple to not make this document too readily available I disagree with this strategy. There is nothing overly technical in this document and in the end people will be lead down the wrong pathe (and do more damage) if they cannot get good info. In my case I found all kinds of miss-leading info about how to pull the processor unit for my machine. Some said remove all the screws, others said just 4 screws (in fact there are 8) Some said don't do it it is complicated, others said it is no more difficult than an air cooled unit. Oddly Apple's site only showed the Service Source document for the earlier air cooled models, which is only helpful to a certain degree.
My point is that too keep things a mystery by not allowing good info to be had causes more harm. Maybe that's the intention ? Anyway I am big fan of Open Source, collaborative sharing of ideas etc. So forums like this are a big help.

MSI Dragon Liquid Cooler

Hi all,
would like to ask if you have any info on what the hell is the MSI Dragon Liquid Cooler? Seen it on scan.co.uk for 40 quid (Pounds) but why does it come as an OEM and why MSI doesn't have any info about it on their website? Seen some reviews on it but they were just comments under product. Wanted to watch video-review, or comparison of it and e.g. Corsair h100i but no go..

it looks like a standard re-branded Asetek made unit and is identical to a Antec KÜHLER H2O 620 closed loop cooler so i would hazard a guess its just the same within 1-2C as they both seem to have the same pump, Radiator, tubing and fans so it will be near identical unless there are changes to the CPU contact plate interior!

My Post to Apple:
Apple should have notified me of the leaking cooling system problem. I could have taken it to them for a check before the Apple care expired.
Checking the sites I have found that this has been a reoccurring problem with the G5 liquid cooled system.
I have bought the Apple care on both my g5 ppc and my G5 imac. My imac warranty is still in effect.
I was told by the store that there is and has been no recall on the liquid cooling system and they can’t give any credit on the repair unless Apple care authorizes the credit.
With all the problems regarding the liquid cooled system, Apple should accept some of or all the responsibility of the this defect.
I have recently purchased leopard and installed leopard along with the purchase of iLife and iWork. I have spent considerable amount of money with the purchase of this machine. 2 23” cinema displays, airport, Ram pci cards and software Cs CS2 and plug-ins for Photoshop.
This computer has less than two years of operating time as it’s in my home in Arizona. I am only in this house during the winters.
Bottom line apple should have notified me of this defect so I could have had it checked at the store before the warranty expired. Apple should accept this defect as there responsibility and correct with no charge

Just took my g5 liquid cooled computer into apple because it is leaking and dripped onto my power supply. I am looking at a little under a thousand dollars for repair. This was my first Mac that I bought in November of 2004. Its out of warranty but has only been used 6 months out a year as it is located in my home in AZ which I am only there for the winters. (Less than 2 years of actual use) They told me at the apple store there is no recall and I would have to call the apple care people to try and get some help on the cost.
I am upset with this problem and had read that after about three years they start to leak. I thought I was in good shape until this morning.
They told me that the power supply could be bad also. They will order the parts and call me when it’s done.
I do feel apple should have some responsibility with this leaking and I will try to talk to them on Monday.
I should have taken the computer in just before the warranty was up had it checked.
I will post back when I have some answers

I just talked to applecare today and they are replacing my g5 with a Mac pro 2.8. They are matching all my upgrades that I had on my g5 that I bought from them. I can't commend them enough, what a great company to deal with. They recognize they had a problem and doing their customers right.

G5 2.7ghz Dual, Leak liquid cooling system:

Hi, my beloved G5 2.7ghz is down, it still powers up but nothing on screen, I need to get this one fixed, Macmedic in Sydney have advised they cannot do anything, has any other user experienced this issue, is there any advice for me? It seems that the liquid cooling system on the processor leaked and damaged the board and power supply. I wonder if it is still safe to operate, and i desperately need to get it repaired as cannot afford another one for my studies! Please advise if anyone had this issue resolved and how.. Thanks!

No, it is not.
The machine is a fire hazard.
Sorry to say but hundred's of people have experienced what you have.
Repairs can be made, but, typically, logic board, CPUs and PSU need replaced.

For likely much less than the cost of repairs, you can buy a Mac Mini that is pretty much more capable than the G5.

Air Cooled or Liquid Cooled.

I have been reading a lot on line and I was wondering if My dual core 2.3 G5 has air cooling or Liquid cooling. I have never had to open my case except to add Ram and change hard drives. I have a dead Mother Board and was just wondering. thanks.

Lightning does strike twice. We had another G5 (dual 2.3 GHz, May 2005) acting strange yesterday (Quicktime movie freezing up, cannot shut down/restart via Apple Remote Desktop), so we went to the comm closet to check it (another pampered G5 in a cooled, dust free environment).
This one's leak is a bit different " slow enough that the coolant has been crystallizing and drying very quickly, over a longer period of time.

There's been debate on some other models like the "Late 2005" dual-core 2.3GHz - one owner reported a leak here (in Nov. 2007 mail) but three other owners have said their dual-core 2.3 were air-cooled, despite having the 'liquid warning' stencil on the PS. (From the photos one 2.3GHz owner sent, it clearly appeared to be air-cooled, not LCS.)

Z820 - Added Liquid Cooling Option

Hi,
I upgraded my Z820 with the liquid cooled CPU heatsinks.
Apparently the 'fan cooling profile' is based on the hardware configuration, do I need to do anything else or will the system detect the changes at boot time?
Reset the CMOS for example?

It's your machine, out of warranty, you can do what ever you like, you can remove the whole case and blow cool air to the machine, you can drill dozen holes to get better air flow, you can pour chilled water thru all corners of the machine ..... and this will reduce 5 or 10 degrees. The question: do you want to do that ?

Noisy liquid cooling system

I have an HP Pavilon Phoenix with liquid cooling. The fan has become very noisy. After 2 hours with support today to find the noise, we found where it was coming from. They gave me a part number 657398-004 or 657398-003. This part is not in stock and they had no idea when it would be available. A google search turned up one part supplier but this part is discontinued. My question is does anyone know of a compatible liquid cooling system that I could use to replace the defective one?

Thank you Photoray002. I am not really comfortable pulling a fan like this and lubricating. What I was hoping to do was get a part number to order a new liquid cooling system and have it installed. I will probably have the installer attempt to find and install a liquid cooling system if your suggestion does not solve the problem. I am a little annoyed that HP does not have the part in stock and they have no idea when if ever it will be received. Initally they were going to have me send my tower for repair. Who knows how long it would have taken to fix.

However, maybe we're talking about two different things. In your OP, you referred to a liquid cooling stand for a MBP; I maintain that you won't find too many of those, yet. Liquid Cooling System diagnostic tools?

QUESTIONS:
Are there any software diagnostics for the Quad G5 LCS?
Can I download and run them myself instead of packing up my desktop and bringing it in to a repair center?
What are normal temperatures for the CPU Core Diodes?
Is there a tool to monitor fan speeds, similar to the tools for monitoring temperature sensors?
SYMPTOMS: CPU fans run much louder than ever before, but still blow cool air out the back. Activity Monitor shows that very little CPU activity is occurring, yet the fans are running higher speeds. Temperature Monitor shows CPU Core Diode temperatures that are lower than the Graphics processor chip. There is a correlation between temp and speed, but the cooling system seem to be overcompensating. Upon rebooting, the fans start out very quiet, like they used to be all the time, then very slowly rise in speed and decibels. Running on Dual CPU (via CHUD) typically runs cooler than Quad CPU mode.
PREVIOUSLY: For three years, this was a very quiet computer. The fans were only audible when the CPUs were obviously tied up near 100%. The exhaust air felt warm, usually, even when the speed was low (now the exhaust seems cooler). EyeTV did recently cause the system to run at high CPU percentages for extended period, which understandably increased the fan noise, but I keep an eye on that now and quit EyeTV whenever it uses too much CPU.
TESTS:
I have booted from the OSX install disc, and the fans are nearly silent in this mode.
I have run the hardware diagnostics that came with the computer, but they run the fans on full and don't seem to test the cooling system.
I have purchased a new main drive and reinstalled 10.4.11 from scratch, and the problem persists (although it does seem to have improved).
Dust was not excessive, but it was very fine, and I have blown some of it out.
In closing, I would like to use some sort of diagnostics to narrow this down, and hopefully determine whether the sensors, liquid coolant, main board controller, or software is bad. I might be able to purchase a replacement LCS, but that would be a waste if it is actually some other system which is failing. I realize that Apple does not typically offer internal diagnostic tools for outside use, but I am highly skilled in electronic design, firmware, and software.

I believe that I've finally solved this. In another topic on this forum, I asked which Apple Service Diagnostic was appropriate for the Quad, and discovered that it's ASD 2.6.3, which took a while to obtain. Strangely, the first Thermal Calibration run did not finish, even after waiting the 10 to 30 minutes that was predicted. I restarted the machine and tested all of the sensors and fans, plus a few systems which seemed related (but I did not take the time to run every test). After this, the Thermal Calibration ran to completion, but failed, claiming that the temperature exceeded the limit, and suggested that I reseat the processor. I actually decided to wait and do that later, and now that I've rebooted my machine it's drastically quieter without any further monkeying around inside.
The loudest fan was running between 2,820 RPM and 3,600 RPM, with another pairs of fans running between 2,350 RPM and 3,100 or 3,200 RPM ... all of them often getting stuck at their maximums sometimes, especially after heavy loads. Now, those fans are at 1,800 RPM to 2,350 RPM, and 1,600 RPM to 2,000 RPM, respectively. Obviously well below the bothersome range! I still have to see what happens when I really exercise the machine, but I can always run the Thermal Calibration again to see if it still fails, assuming I have any more problems, and go from there.
I'm actually quite happy that I did not have to take my machine in, with all the extra worries that entails. I've been a Premier Member of the Apple Developer Connection from time to time over the decades, and have purchased nearly all of my 9 Mac on Hardware Discount, which means I usually got these ASD discs in the mail for free. Unfortunately, I let my membership lapse before I purchased the Quad new after Apple had discontinued it, but while retailers still had stock. Things would have been so much easier if ASD 2.6.3 was already in my collection, but at least now I have it!

Is it possible to externally liquid cool an iMac by taping a liquid cooling system on it's back ?

I wonder if it's possible to tape a liquid cooling system on the back of your iMac .

I just wanted to buy an external liquid cooling system and stick it to the back of my iMac using sticky tape and connect the cooling system to the wall outlet , I mean I wasn't going to open up my Mac ...
