Liquid damage, motherboard fried. Hard drive ok?

Dog peed on my MacBook Pro, motherboard likely fried.  Should my hard drive be completely ok?  Ok to put it in another computer?

The odds there are not as good. If the moisture created a short, the battery may be fried.  But, take it out and test it.
Note, if you have a unibody MBP, you probably will need a #0 Triwing driver to remove the battery.  This is not a common tool found in a hardware store.
Ciao.

  • T43 motherboard damage cant access hard drive

Hello, I wonder if anyone to there could advise me.
I have a T43 with finger print reader, I was shoved on the train and dropped my bag
which resulted in it hitting the floor and the plug punched through the back into the
motherboard. The laptop was in standby at the time.
I have brought a USB 2.5 hard drive connector to try and recover my data but cannot
    access it.
Is the hard drive encrypted if the finger print reader is used.
Can the hard drive be crashed so badly by the mother board being damaged that
    you cant access it anyway?
    Many Thanks
    Dave

    davidadams, welcome to the forum,
ouch! sorry to hear about your bad luck.
The fingerprint doesn't encrypt the hard drive, Client Security does if you configured it to do so.
If you had the finger print configured with a hard drive password set in bios you will not be able to access the hard drive in an usb enclosure. As long as you know the password it is possible to remove the password in another ThinkPad, preferably another T43.
As your T43 was in standby, it is possible that the drop also damaged the hard drive. This would have been less likely if it had been in hibernation mode or turned off as the heads would have been properly parked.
There are ways to recover files from a damaged hard drive, some less costly than others; it depends on how badly it is damaged, if it is damaged.

  • Recently Fried Hard drive, new iTunes doesn't have iCloud to redownload music.

Hi, my hard drive recently fried and after I got a new one and set it up and everything I downloaded iTunes. However, after downloading iTunes there wasn't a cloud for me to redownload all of my music that I lost. Is there a way for me to get the cloud button back to redownload my music or is it lost forever? Also, I had to download the 64 bit version, if that has anything to do with a solution.

Expanding on what The Fiend said, the license to play music from a CD is tied to and stays with the CD. So if you sell or give away the CDs, the license to play the music goes with them, at which point you legally no longer have the right to the tracks. You need to keep the CDs if you want to keep the music.
As for transferring the tracks from your iPhone back to your computer so you don't have to re-import all your CDs, check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod/iPhone media recovery options:

  • Fried hard drive. can I sync ipod to itunes and resurrect former itunes?

The hard drive on my old computer fried taking with it my itunes library. Is there a way to sync my ipod with my new computer and resurrect all of the songs in my library to itunes?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Motherboard crashed, hard drive missing LR and 100 gigs of photo files

able to save drive, put in ext ensclosure and hooked it up tp laptop.  am able to open My Pictures folder, only 10 gigs worth of pics visible.
should be 126 gigs.  most programs still on drive and accessible: i tunes, all canon photo software, etc.  the LR catalog is nowhere to be found.
when this drive was in the desktop there was 25 gigs free space left.  viewing the drive hooked up to laptop it also shows 25 gigs free.
wondering if this info is false.  if not, where are my missing files and LR ???
i do have my stuff backed up but not sure if all of it backed up, specifically some photo files.
have tried booting from the drive instead of from laptop drive, windows would not allow.  desktop was xps, laptop is vista.  during that boot i actually saw the xps logo come up a couple of times but then it went to vista.
    any help would be appreciated.
a tech friend suggested hooking drive up to his linux os which i am going to do this weekend.

Sounds like you have two problems. 1) Unable to load LR onto the second system (laptop) and 2) the hard drive with original system files has a corrupted file system due to motherboard failure and system crash.
Problem 1: LR license activation allows loading onto two (2) systems. Did you load LR on two systems prior to the crash, which is now preventing you from activating the copy on your laptop? You may need to call Adobe Tech Support to "free-up" the license on your crashed system.
Problem 2: You will need to some data recovery work, due to a corrupted file system on the original HDD. There are numerous data recovery software applications available as freeware or for purchase:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/data-recovery-software/
I only have experience with Acronis True Image Home 2010, and definitely would NOT recommend their products due to bugs and poor tech support. Perhaps someone else on the LR forums can suggest a specific data recovery application?

  • Motherboard Max Hard Drive Capacity?

I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive in my MacBook2,1. Should I be concerned that there is a maximum amount of space/speed the motherboard can handle. If so, what is the max?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP23
    Thanks!

There is no limit. The information from Apple was based on the maximum size hard drive available at the time. The only limitation of concern is the height of the drive. Your model may not accommodate drives more than 9.5 mm high.

  • Fried hard drive.

Recently had the hard drive on my laptop fried. Lightning came in through the cable modem frying it along with my router and hard drive. Trying to figure a way to retreive my itunes library to my new computer. Anyone know the Phone# or email for support. I've tried this online support but It's mostly for hardware support and need a serial numbers etc, etc. Tried sharing my library option but it says I have 5 computers already sharing (max). Not sure whats that all about. Since the only other computer I have is the fried 1.

Sharing allows computers on the same network to share music.
Do you have your itunes library on another computer/backup drive? If you do, then you can reset your authorizations and re-authorize the active computers, and use home share.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
You can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:
    File>Transfer Purchases
You can also do a forum search and find many posts on how to get content from an ipod.
    http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html
"PRODUCTS CAN ONLY BE DOWNLOADED ONCE; AFTER BEING DOWNLOADED, THEY CANNOT BE REPLACED IF LOST FOR ANY REASON. YOU SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BACKING UP YOUR OWN SYSTEM"
You can e-mail itunes support to see if they would make an exception - thought they are not obligated to do so.

  • MacBook Air does not turn on but does this damage it's hard drive ? Can I still save/ recover videos and photos from photo stream?

My MacBook Air was put on sleep mode and a couple of hours later I attempted to turn it on and no response. I called apple support and went through the process to try to power it back on and it would not turn on . Nothing would show on the screen and I heard nothing coming from my MacBook Air .
Is this because it overheated ? does this have to do with where it was charging and placed ? or is this because of battery/ power problems ?
I had no choice but to take it to the apple store for repair . Does anyone know if when this happens it ruins my hard drive ?? is all data lost ?
I have my sons memorable photo and videos on photo stream ? How can I recover that if it would turn on ? it is photo streaming with iPhone but only limited and no videos .. Can I get transferred/ photo streamed to windows computer?
Please help ..any ideas what went wrong and how to save my memorable home videos an photos of my son ?
    Greatly appreciated

Well on the Air models there really isn't a traditional hard drive, it is a SSD/Flash drive that is integral to the system and can't really be removed or connected to another Mac for retrieving of files. So yes if you take it in and they have to replace the Logic board, The Hart Of the System, then more then likely all your files will be gone.
That is one reason Apple includes Time Machine for Backing Up the system including your files. If you never used Time Machione then eventually, At Some Point In Time, you will Lose all your data. That is a fact of all computers.

  • Bad motherboard - Good Hard drive - data recovery

thinking I should ESATA cable to hard drive and USB -- to look inside hard drive. But I don't know the path to the photos folder.  Like to maintain as much info about the pictures as possible - so I can import to new computer Aperature.
    WIll that work? (SATA/USB)
WHat would the path be once I can view the hard drive?
    Thanks.

You negelected to mention the minor fact of ditching the computer
If you connect the drive as an external drive,  depress teh option key and launch iphoto and use the select library command to select your library
As to what to look for - it is the iPhoto library - you can not mess with it it in pieces - it is a database and is a single entity and must be treated as one
For Aperture questions the Aperture forum is a much better place to ask

  • Lost iPhoto when Apple replaced damaged MacBook Pro hard drive

My son and daughter-in-law recently had to replace their MacBook Pro hard drive. Apple did the replacement, but they got it back without iPhoto. Isn't that standard software when you purchase a MacBook Pro? Shouldn't it be part of the replacement, too?

If your computer shipped with Lion, follow the directions here to redownload the iLife apps:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • HT1782 Can using "repair disk" ever damage an external hard drive?

I've read a lot about "verify disk" and "repair disk," but I haven't been able to find any definitive information about whether or not there is ever a bad time to run these, especially if the files on your drive are already not accessible or the drive is otherwise having issues.
If I run repair disk before taking my drive to a specialist, is there a chance that I'll be causing more problems than I'm solving?
Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to put this in the Mountain Lion category (I'm running Lion), but I apparently can't change it. The OS shouldn't matter with regards to this question.

If I run repair disk before taking my drive to a specialist, is there a chance that I'll be causing more problems than I'm solving?
Absolutely yes. You should make no changes to a questionalble drive unless you have a current backup. If you don't have a current backup, the only thing you should do with the drive is back it up. If the backup fails, go straight to data recovery without making any further attempts to repair the volume. Maybe it can be repaired, but you have to make a block copy first.

  • Fried my hard drive.  Trying to authorize new computer (store authorize computer).  I get a box that says the account has already been created.

Fried hard drive and replaced computer.  Trying to authorize my new computer to download music on the account I created with old computer.  I get a box that says the account hs already been created.  I know that.  I created it.  Has anyone else out there run into this before?

Unless the process has changed, you won't be able to do that (I've been there, done that...). You can either opt to de-authorize all (doesn't matter if it's only one) which you're allowed to do once a year, or, if you don't want to "waste" that option, contact iTunes support.

  • Hard Drive Fried - No Data Recovered - No Back-Up - How to recover iTunes

Yes, I should be backing up, but failed to do so. My hard drive crashed and our Apple techs could not recover anything from the hard drive. New hard drive installed. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty identifying information on how to upload my iPhone music, podcasts, etc. to the newly downloaded iTunes on the new hard drive. Seen posts for when data was recovered, but not how to use iPhone to replace what was lost on a fried hard drive.
    Thanks.

  • Bluetooth damage hard drives?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could please tell me whether or not it's true that the inbuilt Bluetooth module and Bluetooth devices can damage hard disk drives? Should I leave Bluetooth switched off if I want to prevent damage to my hard drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stu
P.S. Is it also true that mobile phones can cause damage to hard drives? Thanks

There is no truth to the idea that the electro-magnetic force generated by built-in or add-on Bluetooth adapters, or mobile handsets or smartphones equipped with Bluetooth, can damage a hard disk or the data stored on it.
You might consider leaving Bluetooth switched off for security reasons or to conserve battery power, but turning it off will not protect your drive or data from damage due to EMF. It simply is not a problem.
