I had a similar situation with my MBP and I rang an authorised Apple repairer and was told that liquid spills are not repaired. I will be issued with a letter to take to my insurer and either get a new MBP or the money back.

Can you suggest what I should do apart from shutting down word documents and other software, Parallels, Windows 7 when using FCP?
I am gravely concerned with this high heat. I have to use a remote keyboard it is so hot, but gravely concerned with with the damage the heat is doing to to MAC BOOK PRO RETINA.
ironic - given I switched to Mac from PC this year JUST for FCP editing.

You didn't mention what sort of work you're doing - if you're just cutting video this shouldn't happen.
My suggestion would be to optimize all of your media to ProRes .
Even though PR is a much larger file it's much easier on the CPU. Playing back compressed media is like rendering all day.
I routinely use an old 2007 MBP with a core 2 duo and FCP7. I can cut and color correct with no problem at all using ProRes LT files. The only time it gets hot is during long renders.
I have the laptop elevated on a pedestal that allows air to pass underneath . During long renders I point a small fan at it which often cools it enough to shut the internal fans down.
All that said, I know the retina is a more compact design and components are much closer to each other.
So, I'd be interested to hear from another retina owner.

Ive recently spilt a glass of coke on my macbook pro and it stopped working. I took it to apple and they said it was damaged.
I have purchased a new mac since and transfered all the info from the old to the new.
Are there any parts worth keeping on the "Coke Damaged" macbook?
I have taken out the hard drive and keeping that, but would anything else be worth keeping?

Spilled liquid on top of mac book pro; usb/wifi problems.

So yesterday evening I spilled hot chocolate on the top of my mac book pro while it was sitting on my desk closed. I picked it up, unplugged everything from it and grabbed a towel so that I could try it off. I got most of it off and nothing got into the keyboard area underneath. But I did see some of it get into the side ports and mainly the first usb port. I just realized that now when I plug something into that usb port, the wifi and usb don't work! The second one is reliable and works fine, it charges and plays audio. That is basically all I use it for. But now I am limited to just one usb port, it could be alot worse. It is an annoyance though, especially since I bought this laptop literally a year ago. From what I understand Apple will only guarantee their product for one year and won't honor most customer accidents. So with an expired warranty by just days, I am left with a perfectly working computer -1 usb port. I know getting frustrurated wont solve anything and I've spent the last hour figuring out why the internet and mouse weren't working.
What are my options? Anyone else have this kind of problem? Is there something I can do to fix my computer?

Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. Liquid damage is not covered under Apple's standard 1 year warranty or Apple Care.
NOTE: If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with. They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.

Anyone have an issue with spilling liquid on the Mac Book Pro and it won't turn on now?

A liquid was accidentally spilled on the Mac Book Pro and although it didn't appear that much liquid spilled on the computer, it will not start up now. Anyone have an issue like this? Also, the charger will not light up.

Liquids have no place on a MacBook Pro. Even a little bit is going to damage it. Depending on the type of liquid (pure 100% alcohol the best, since it's volatile and non oxidative), the damage is probably permanent. If it's just water, let it dry, and see what happens. If it's something with sugar or salts in it, then you're probably in trouble, because even if they do dry out, the moisture in the air of place like South Florida will hydrate the dried up salts, creating conductive pathways shorting out your computer over and over again.
You can take it to an authorize Apple dealer or Apple itself for repair. There is no warranty coverage. And the cost will probably exceed that of a new MacBook Pro, depending on the age of yours.

If you keep getting a 'red' message it means that the HDD is faulty and will have to be replaced. You will have to format the new HDD in Disk Utility>Erase and then install the OSX and your data from Time Machine.

Sorry no Apple will not replace it. What happened was an accident and the Apple warranty does not cover accidental damages.
So it looks like you will need to buy a new computer or pay to have your Mac fixed.

Does the mac book pro 3 year care plan have a student discount?

I purchased my laptop (mac book pro) in march 2014 & I'm thinking of buying the care plan which will be valid for 3 years. Could I know if there's a student discount for the care plan & if it's valid from the date of purchase of the laptop or the date of purchase of the care plan?
I bought my laptop from a UK apple store for student price & my university is registered as an educational institution on the apple website.

The care plan extends your coverage from date-of-purchase to the three-year mark, and provides free telephone support for that entire period.
In general, there are no additional student discounts on the care plan.
The care plan covers defects in materials and workmanship up to the three year mark. On a MacBook, it does not cover accidental damage or liquid spills. But owners of the care plan have been known to get the 'benefit of the doubt' in close judgement calls about warranty coverage.
You must choose to purchase it within the first year of coverage, or it becomes unavailable. This is to preclude users waiting until a problem occurs and then buying care. Like any sort of insurance, it remains affordable because some purchases will be covered, but will not need to collect on it.

Display of mac book pro retina 13 inch

On august 13th i purchased a mac book pro retina 13.3. It worked good for 3 months and then in November my display stopped working and gave it to apple service center in my college and after 3 days then gave me back saying it was some troubleshooting problem so they disconnected and then reconnected the display.
Now on 3rd January i had some flickering on my screen i restarted it but it nothing helped .Next day what i see is a big black dot on my screen with some horizontal and vertical lines.
straight away i took it to the store and the person there asks me 440 dollars as he thinks its a physical damage.
I mean without a scratch on any part of the laptop,without a crack on a screen or the body how can the display inside the glass screen can be damaged?
Is this the quality of the products ?
i get an answer from the person at apple store that even i dust particle gets stuck while closing the mac book can cause this problem.
Moreover there are no records of the service they did on my mac book in November and now after calling them they say that it will be updated today.
So if the quality so bad of the display that just by opening and closing the mac book the display got damaged?
I really want to know a person whom i can write this problem to?

but I believe the update didnt fix the problem. I tried to do SMC reset several times but the system still hunguing everytime I connect the adapter.

I need to talk to someone about changing all of my accounts. A iCloud account was opened not by me and I lost 17 years of contacts. I have slowly gotten them back. My files from my Mac Book were taken and are gone. It has cost me about 60,000 dollars in business since November which has effected my staff as well. Many personal ireplacable memories of my childrens Photos were taken, Business, designs and accounting and personalFiles you name it gone or corrupted. My main PC including 4 external hard drives, then the Mac Book, My Iphones,itouch. Ipad were next and then my Mac Book pro. This is very humbling and heart felt. those who work with me have very strong beliefs, it was an internal doing or I should say someone gained or was allowed access to my home and equipment. I travel and tour and am gone quite a bit. This was and is the most difficult thing that has happened to me in a long time. In truth business and work will and can be rectified that not the point. It's how and what has been done which is the most damaging very personal almost vidictive but I will stop there. I feel so violated and saddened at the same time. I am hoping to contact someone through Apple or even an outside source to see if my files can be recouped and how to go about doing these changes all at once without all of the emails back and forth to approve changes in accounts what a pain. I want to change all accounts associated with apple. Apple ID and Pass words, I tunes ID and Pass word you name it.When I leave for work now days I have to take all of my equipment or lock things in the safe. I have won awards for my work and my designs and information being taken has hurt more than words can express. I am currently out of town doing this late at night. I have changed my banking you name it. I need to have access to my computers to work but the stress of these constant changes and invasion of privacy are beyond expression. I plug in any of my usb drives and they are empty or my computers do not recognize them. I plug in my usb connector from my HP 8100 Printer with Blue tooth capabilities and it pops up and an external E drive for downloading just like an external drive. My printer acepts every imaginable portable disk on the market . Many of my usb drives are gone or have been corrupted. I have this darn air drop that goes on all the time. My computers I turn off and then they are on when I get up. I can go on and on. I live in the bay area and I am asking for help in trying to stop all of this. I will call Apple next but I wanted to put it out on this forum with the hopes of some response or input. I have all of my new and very minimal recovered information now on a web-based server which I know is safe the pass words and set up were done very discreetly (one can only hope). I apologize in advance for laying this out there like this. I am just so frustrated and because of the POSSIBLE implications makes it even harder In which I truly want to be proven wrong. I have never written or thought that I would be doing this as it is. If anything I hope some good comes out of this for someone. Bluetooth is a powerful tool this much I know now. I just want to have the best opotunity to recover and have control over my designs and pretty much my privacy and peace of mind not too much to ask..:-) Oh! do not get me wrong I am willing to pay for services thats not the issue here. Mac Book Pro Dead - Completely Unresponsive

First to give a little background info - my Mac Book Pro is 13 months old - I missed the Apple Care Deadline by a week due to a mistake on my part. Upon purchase I received 3 faulty machines prior to this one. I had put the deadline in my calendar based on when I got a functional machine, rather than my purchase date - my fault. I tried to beg Apple Care for mercy a mere 2 days after my actual deadline and just got passed from associate to associate until one would finally just disconnect me. (This happened 3 times).
On to the saga of last night. I'm working at home, running iTunes, Mail, and Photoshop. I'm working on a layout in Photoshop - nothing very taxing on the system at all. The only things connected to the machine were the power adapter and my Wacom tablet. As I was editing a photo, all of a sudden the computer just shut off. There were no beeps, no pops, no cracks, nothing. Just dead, gone, nothingness. I feared the worst immediately due to the no Apple Care. Unfortunately, I fear even more than my initial fears were accurate.
I'm writing this post to see if anyone has experienced anything similar and has come up with a solution. I've searched the forums but don't seem to find anything but the random shut off issue (which this doesn't seem to be as those systems would at least reboot).
So far I've tried:
1) removing the battery, and powering up using only AC power
2) resetting the PMU
3) leaving it over night without power connected and the batter removed and then re-connecting to AC power
Nothing has produced any results at all. Any help/advice is appreciated. I have a feeling that I'm pretty screwed as it seems like a power issue or a fried logic board - neither of which sound like cheap repairs.

Well, no official word yet, however there I do have news to report. The Genius at the Apple Store (Michael @ Ridgedale Mall, MN) was VERY helpful and reassuring that he didn't think it was a huge issue. He doesn't think its a logic board or anything that in depth - his initial thoughts were that a wire simply came loose and thats why it will charge, but we get no activity when the power button is pushed.
I also explained to him about my fiasco with even getting this machine in the first place (this is my 3rd machine - first two arrived damaged out of the box), and they had it on record that I had tried to buy apple care within the year time frame of when I actually received the satisfactory model (this one). Plus the fact that this is no where near my first Apple purchase and that ALL of my other products have AppleCare plans.
He gave me some pointers and told me to call AppleCare today and explain the situation, explain that I'd been misinformed from various channels, etc. Well it worked, and I now have AppleCare on the machine as of today.
I should know what repair is needed in the next day, and hopefully have the machine back early next week.
Needless to say this experience once again renewed my faith in Apple and the support they offer loyal customers.
