Liquid found on logic board

Hi all!
Basically I had to get my battery replaced today, and after they replaced it they said they found liquid on the logic board and 2 other places (I did spill some water over it a couple of weeks ago). I'm now wondering whether it is worth replacing or not... my laptop does seem to be working fine, but the apple person said it could gradually get worse. The only problem is, is its going to cost £430 to replace, and I'm finding it hard to part with that money while it's currently working fine! what are the chances it will get worse? Do you think I should just bite the bullet as I probably will have to do it sooner or later?
Thanks
Megan

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I don't recommend people to continue using their MacBooks Pro if they have spilled liquid because their computers may fail at any moment.
If you spilt liquid a long time ago, you can consider the option to continue using your computer and just make backups to make sure that your files are safe, but it's dangerous because something may happen to your computer. The safest way is to have your logic board replaced, but it's up to you

  • Can a 167mhz bus logic board is kill a 133mhz bus cpu?

Well, I'm trying to upgrade my g4 MDD dual 867mhz... So i found a logic board from a newer mdd with 167mhz bus.  So anyway, to test the board (got off ebay) I put the dual 867mhz cpu and the ram..ect..  try to boot it up and I got a black screen fans running crazy??  I turned if off..   Put every think back to stock with the old logic board and it doest the same thing.  the computer worked great befor for this...  Did i kill the cpu in the high bus board?  I tryed every the resetting the PRAM, reseating the cpu.. Its just dead!   thanks for any help

The CPUs would get very hot very quickly & could be damaged because if you didn't change the Resitors that set the CPU multipliers, it would try to run the 867s at 1.08GHz.
A 25% overclock on the 867s would be a strech in my experience.

  • 13 inch mid 09 MBP will not boot in safe mode or os disc. originally kernal panic but now blank screen. is this logic board? no liquid damage.

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
    Thanks

    thanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds.

  • Facetime issue - after installing a new logic board due to liquid damage.

I installed a new logic board this week.. after installing the os x operation system and then upgrading it to mavericks and i used migration assistant to load my backuped user from an external disk.
I tried to log in using my apple id ( which is verified) it couldn't log in beacuse "could not sign in. please check your network connection and try again"
and i did all the updates of mavericks. i tried also before installing mavericks i thougt upgrading will fix it..
    i saw on forums that i should add 2 DNS's (8888 and 8844) didn't work.
i tried connection to my phones hotspot - didn't work.
i also went to the firewall thing to allow it recieve cennections..
    pleassee help!!
is there a way to reinstall the facetime or something?!?!?!

My problem solved could possiblly be your solution: Check to make sure your system serial number is being read by your logic baord.  If the tech forgot to reenter the serial number, it's a known issue for Facetime and Messages (apparantly not know enough yet though, no tech bulliten exists on the topic).
I spent several days trouble shooting my inablility to login to my account with Facetime or Messages (other cloud services worked) after upgrading to Mavericks.  I went as far as doing a clean install on my hard drive after spending two hours with a baffled mac tech in a retail store and many hours searching the message boards.
I have never had a logic board (or hard drive) replaced on my Macbook Air, but somehow after the Mavericks update the logic board stopped reading the serial number on my system.  It took a call to Apple and a ticket opened to engineering to figure this out (after I uploaded log files).
They were puzzled I experienced this without a logic board replacement, but it was indeed the root cause of the facetime and messages apps failing to log in, and said they'd run in to it recently more than once.
Wish I knew how to post this unbiquitously across all the boards for folks to troubleshoot by simply looking at their system info in the Apple menu; Apple scheduled an appointment for me at an Apple genius bar and it was fixed in fifteen minutes.

  • Logic board liquid damage of macbook pro retina display late 2012

there were water spilled on my macbook pro 13" retina (late 2012) and I sent it to apple service in Trieste, Italy and they said that the logic board is damaged and I need a new one with a new top case.. which costs as buying a new macbook..is there any suggestions or alternative cheaper way to fix it?!
i will in any price cheaper than buying a new one..

I see nasty corrosion on that logic board
whoever told you they could genuinely "fix" it , lied to you
I also know for 100% certain theyre not going to desolder any of those micro-connections and add new components.
among the laptop repair community, thats called L.C.D. (lost cause destruction) , ...when it exceeds new-unit replacement cost.

  • Found "Digital Audio" logic board, cpu & psu inside my Quicksilver ?

Recently got a quicksilver that "appeared" different to me . . .
Upon looking inside it's is a digital audio g4 swap (verified part #'s)
Logic board, 466mhz cpu and psu inside a Quicksilver case.
Any upgrades for this? does the dual 533 work in here?
Not sure what to do with this one, was hoping it was the sawtooth with the agp without adc (for testing flashed video cards without taping pins 3 & 11) . . .anyways

If you are just a TINY bit adventurous, get a QS CPU.
All you need to do is run a 12V line for fourth screw hole on CPU daughtercard.
Have a dig at XLR8yourmac.com, details used to be there...somewhere.
I once a QS 867 CPU and moved a resistor and made it a 933Mhz. I then ran over it with a rolling chair and knock a bunch of caps off.
Soldered them back on and sent it to a friend with a DA. He slapped it in and went on to do great things with that old DA. (like write the Mac Nvidia 6200 ROM)
The later QS 133Mhz bus CPUs had more cache, something like that. I know that the 867 was MUCH faster than a 733 I tried in it once.

  • How can I tell if my motherboard and/or logic board is fried?

Good evening all, I was just wondering if anybody can tell me the way to find out if my old power mac mobo is fried, or weather it's the logic board or the power supply. When I try to boot it up there is no start up chime, there is no white power on light and the red light doesn't even come on. It's one of those bad liquid cooled models but it hasn't leaked. I really don't have the luxury of spending a lot of money just to have someone diagnose the thing for me. I would be willing to replace the power supply for the price that was quoted to me off hand from an apple tech, but the person on the phone wouldn't let me talk to the tech so he wouldn't answer my ? and I despise the genius bar kids who don't seem to know the hard core techie stuff and I tend to talk circles around them. Sorry if there is already a post on this (I searched but came up with nothing) or if this is a dumb or fruitless effort on my part but no clear answers yet found in the magical internet.
Cheers and thanks in advance for your responses!

Can you count the beeps or flashes of the Power Button?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) computers have six or seven built-in diagnostic LEDs on the main logic board that can help Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) troubleshoot certain issues. These LEDs are located to the left of the top bank of DIMM connectors (where your computer's RAM is installed):

  • Logic board corrosion?

My daughter has a Powerbook 1.5G aluminum 12" that has been running slow for a year or so, she got it new in 2005. The computer has had beach balls and general slowness. yesterday she took it to a genius bar and was told it was definitely slower than it should be, and that the cause was likely softwear or impending hard drive failure. My daughter said recently the computer made a repetive clicking noise, only one time; she had reported this to me about a week ago.
The genius said it should be checked by Apple if due to software, the drive should be reformatted, or else, whatever was wrong should be repaired. Today, she found a message at the repair status link saying to call Apple. She called and was told there was corrosion on the logic board which could only have been caused by spilling liquid on the powerbook, and because of this the repair would not be covered by her AppleCare warranty.
She is adamant that she has never spilled anything on the computer and that no one but her has used it. She is upset that the repair won't be covered because she hasn't done anything to damage the computer, she babies the computer and goes crazy if there's the slightest smudge on it.
Other than liquid spilling on a powerbook, what else could cause corrosion on the logic board? She says that at their previous apartment there was mold in the apartment, and she wonders if this could've caused the corrosion on the logic board. Does this sound like a possibility? Does anyone know if there is any appeal to Apple about this, any reasonable argument that the corrosion was not due to her negligence, but from some other unknown cause beyond her control and knowledge?

Thanks for your reply. That's helpful to hear that the symptoms the computer was sent in for are not explained by logic board damage. The genius bar person didn't characterize it as a logic board related problem; she said it was likely the hard drive failing or need to be reformatted. whatever the cause of corrosion of the logic board, why should that have anything to do with a problem not related to the logic board?
I think she should contact customer relations or a repair supervisor about that, or an AppleCare rep. I have the same kind of computer she has. I just read over the terms and conditions in the documentation that came with my AppleCare policy. It says "1(b) Limitations: Plan does not cover: (ii) Damage to the covered equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse....extreme environment (including extreme temperatures or extreme humidity)...."
One thing that stands out to me here is that it says 'does not cover damage caused by...' If the hard drive is faulty, that isn't caused by corrosion on the logic board; if they want to say the supposed liquid spilled on the logic board may have also damaged the hard drive, maybe so, but that's very speculative. It's already speculative to say corrosion on the logic board was caused by spilled liquid in the first place.
Also, if they look at her computer, they can see it hasn't been abused or misused--she's had it since fall of 05 and it doesn't have any dents or scratches--she has really cared for it. (i wish i could say the same about mine :-o )
As for extreme humidity, i don't think so. They lived in San Diego--it gets hot in the summer but it's coastal Southern California--it's hardly extreme weather.
If they want to insist that corrosion on the logic board voids the warranty on the hard drive (and that's not at all clear by the wording of the policy, as i'm reading it) it still remains that she denies ever spilling anything on it, and to look at it, you can see it's been well protected, so i think they have good reason to give her the benefit of the doubt. They say corrosion is absolute proof there was liquid spilled on it. I don't think that's reasonable. But if so, how do we know it wasn't spilled on before it was shipped to her? It's not like Apple never has any new computers with quality control problems.
You're right, replacing a hard drive isn't too expensive, so if that's the problem, at least it's not too much of a disaster (although she is very short on money, being between jobs). But she is one of your more loyal passionate Apple advocates, and feels betrayed tonight. Until today, she had no idea there was any logic board corrosion, she just followed the advice of the geniius bar to send it in for repair and wasn't prepared for what happened.

  • '08MBP w/Nvdia 8600, could this be the screen itself, rather than card/logic board?

Ok, so I got a new-to-me MB Pro4,1 (A1260) off eBay about two months ago.  Love it!!!  I've been a Mac user since they were just called Apples, but this is my first laptop.  It has Mountain Lion on it, but came with the original install CD, which I think was 10.6.  (I'd have to track down my super-safe place I stored it to be sure.)
Unfortunately I didn't know about the faulty graphics card issue until I started having problems with my screen not coming on when I'd wake it after a sleep. And, it would get REALLY hot, directly behind the battery, particularly when running things like SketchUp.  It would also, occasionally, throw out Asian-ish characters when dialog boxes would pop up.
A couple of times I had to do the shut-the-lid-reopen-it trick and then it'd hum along with no issues. Monday it wouldn't come on at all.  Or rather, the screen wouldn't come on.  The computer was obviously running just like always.  I even tried plugging it in to a desktop monitor and still just a black screen.  Did some research and found out about the graphics card issue.
That evening I opened it up and it came on like nothing had happened.  So I set the screen-sharing permissions.
    Tuesday, no issues.
Today it's doing the same as Monday.  However, because I turned on my screen sharing, I've been able to access it from my desktop.  Everything works fine...? (in fact, I DLed iStat onto it, via screen sharing, so I could check temps.)   Just no screen.  No shadows, no dim lights, nothing.
I just emailed my seller to see if he'd done the logic board replacement offered under Apple's extended warranty (that ran out in December) and am waiting to hear back.
What's the liklihood that this is just the screen, instead of the card/logic board? (The Asian characters make me think it might be logic board anyway... )

It's the bad graphics chip and the system will die soon.
    Good Luck and Best wishes.

  • G5 Logic Board or Memory Issues?

Hello, about 2 months ago i recieved a 1GB Dimm for christmas, and being naive, i installed it in the slot above the 4 512MB RAMs that came with my computer. When the computer didnt recognize it i looked in the manual and found out that you are supposed to install them in matched pairs. Figuring i would lose the memory i left it in the computer for about a month. Then the trouble started. When waking from sleep or screensaver i would get the spinning color pinwheel which would NEVER stop and i would hard start using the button on the front. Problem was that the computer would not boot back up for hours. I would get to the grey apple screen and then after that a blank blue screen with the cursor, and that is as far as it would get. If i tried hours later it would eventually start up. When i decided to remove the 1GB RAM chip the computer worked for about a day then started the same problem. I wiped both my drives to zero and installed the system on my second drive. Again it worked for a day and then the same problem. Once the problem started it hasnt stopped yet, i cant get into my computer at all now and it has been several days. It wont boot from ANY volume. I brought it into Tek Serve in NYC and the said it could be the processor or logic board, but they wanted 700-1000 dollars to fix it. So i took it home and ran the apple hardware test cd. I ran the extended test first, then the quick test. Both times it said my logic board passed, harddrives passed, but when it got to the memory section it took a VERY long time, and eventually CRASHED my computer the screen turned into millions of bright colored bars and i would have to hard re-start it. Thinking it was bad RAM i removed all my RAM, and re-installed it in different orders and taking my computer from its factory 2GB down to 1GB to see if any of my chips had problems. I also hit the reset button under the RAM but it still never started and still had the same problem. So as of now i dont have a working computer, i called someone at apple tech support and told him the whole story. He said i should bring it it somewhere and maybe by putting in the extra mis-balanced 1GB chip maybe i overloaded my RAM sockets and fried that section of the logic board. Has anyone heard of this happening? I am reallly lost on this whole thing and would rather not pay $1000 to fix it (though i think maybe Tek Serve is just really expensive), but obviously a comparable new mac is 3x that amount anyway. PLEASE let me know if there is anything else you can think of, or let me know if i could have maybe infact overloaded my RAM and blown the logic board.

You can go to the Apple Support page and click on Check my Warranty, then enter your serial number (found in "about this Mac">more info) and you will see how long you have left on your Apple Care.

  • AHT finds logic board error, but computer working fine

I ran the Apple Hardware Test to see the profile for my RAM, but 7 seconds into the test it stopped and reported a logic board error.
    1. But my computer is working fine. If anyone has experience with this, I'll gladly take your advice. Do I ignore this error at my own risk? Or should I get it looked at now in case it's an early warning of something that can get worse? For the real Apple tech experts, here's the error code: 2I2C/1/1: 0x00000092.
Eleven months ago, I had to get a new power supply installed. It was covered under the extended warranty for power issues with iMac G5s. As I've indicated, it's been working fine since then.
    2. Once AHT finds an error, it won't continue testing the remaining components. Does anyone know of a way to "force" the AHT to skip the logic board test and go on to test the other hardware items?
    Thanks all.

Michael, pray tell, where does one find the published list of codes you refer to? I searched the whole internet (or so it seemed like it) looking for a resource like that. Are you an AASP?
Even my experienced Apple technician and his AASP contacts didn't realize that my error code relates to the European Union. (And, BTW, I'm in Canada and I purchased my iMac from a store in Canada.) You have solved a mystery!
The strange thing is that when I phoned Apple Tech Support and asked to speak to a product specialist, even they told me that the code means "logic board needs replacement." When I asked to speak to a higher dept., I was connected to Customer Relations (very nice, professional fellow answered). When I explained that this G5 iMac has been problematic for me (failure after 7 mos. of ownership, power supply failure after 3 yrs, etc.) he offered me $100.00 off a new iMac ($125.00 in Canada), which I accepted.
I did use TechTool Pro to check the computer. It found no problems. Four months later and it's still going strong. I don't know whether to be upset with Apple for not bothering to look up the code, or whether I should look at this as a blessing in disguise (how else would I have received $125.00 off a new iMac? And now, my father gets a G5 that I can confidently say is in good working order). And it's strange that my local tech's AASP friends weren't any wiser. Aren't AASPs privy to this error code info? A mystery indeed...

  • Can you tell if it is a display problem or logic board problem

I have a 17 inch aluminum mac book pro. I bought it from a reseller on ebay in February. Recently I have been having some display issues. It has taken it longer and longer for screen to come back on from sleeping and the other day it did not come back on at all. I thought it could be a faulty graphics card because it is one of the models that has the faulty card in it but when I took it to my local mac authorized dealer they said that because there was damage to the hinges of screen, they thought it was a display issue and suggested I get a new screen for upwards of 900 dollars. While testing it they plugged it into an external display and the screen turned on for a few seconds. When they closed it, it did not come back on. Back at home I did a similar test and plugged in an external monitor and it worked for a while but as soon as i turned i closed the lid the display went off again and now I cant get it to display even when connected to external monitor. WHen i turn it on i can hear the chime and i can control the volume and keyboard brightness. My question is whether this is a simple display issue, a faulty graphics card issue, or a logic board issue? Please help me. I am going to fix the computer either way I would jsut like to know if it is a screen issue that I could replace myself.

If the Macbook Pro was made between 2007 and 2008 it maybe the Nvidia issue.
I suggest you take it to an Apple center and have them run the test.
The damaged hinge should not affect the test, I would think.
Be warned though, just because you have exactly the same symptoms does not mean it will fail the test or more importantly, if the test does not generate a fault code, Apple will not repair.
Did this start after the 10.5.7 update and more importantly did you run the SMC 1.3 update as well?
If you can get the machine to start properly, deleting the /var/vm/sleepimage seems to eliminate the symptoms of not waking. Before you delete is take note of it's size.
It's my opinion that this file also caused the machine to hang after the SMC 1.3 update when the lid was closed the first or second time. The machine then continued to run generating lots of heat. You may not have noticed and just found the machine with a flat battery one day.
If that is the case, damage is done and the symptoms are the same as the Nvidia extend warranty issue except not covered!

  • What's wrong with my drive? Dead Drive? ATA controller? Logic Board?

    Hi!
I have had a problem with my iBook G4 1.33GHz for a while now. I've tried a few times to fix it and then have given up thinking replacement was the best option. I'll try to be brief but this saga has actually been going on for over 2 years.
The basic problem is that the computer finds the HD intermittently. The problem used to occur after the computer had booted and was on for maybe an hour. A friend of mine removed the drive and had it running in a separate enclosure for a few days. It seemed fine-all disk checkers like Disk Warrior checked it out just fine. He reinstalled the drive and gave me back the computer. Within a few days, it froze like before. Upon restart I just get the question mark folder.
That was almost 2 years ago. I've tried a few different things to see what was the problem but to no avail. Here's what I have tried:
-Booting into target disk mode-the disk does not mount.
-Booting from a CD-even if I hold down the C key, it prompts that this is going to be a new install and when I get to the screen to pick the volume, the HD does not appear.
-Tried the shim trick as indicated at:
    http://coreyarnold.org/ibook/?p=20
Some earlier symptoms included video issues so this made sense.
-Took apart yesterday to make sure the drive connected well. It didn't work at first but later booted from hard drive.
-Since it booted, I restarted in Target Disk mode and ran Disk Utility from my iMac. There were some errors but DU was able to fix them all. Restarted iBook no problem.
-Ran Apple Hardware Test overnight in loop mode. After 18 rounds, nothing came up.
-Ran SMART Reporter and got green.
-Thought everything was ok so I ran Software Update. First round went fine. I ran it a second time knowing that some updates can be incremental. Upon downloading, computer froze and since then I am back to square one-no booting.
-Took apart today to see if there was any corrosion on the ATA chip as mentioned in this article:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2310290&tstart=0
as the thread mentioned a lot of stuff I was experiencing.
    -Reassembled after finding nothing.
-Now the computer does not boot whatsoever-it tries to eject disk in optical drive and then nothing else-no sounds, no video, etc.
So what does all of this mean? I thought the earlier indicators were a dying drive but when my friend checked it out and found nothing, we were stumped. He actually suggested the ATA controller. The not wanting to boot from a CD really bothers me. What does that mean? I have never seen that in 20 years of using Macs.
Oh and if it matters, this computer was formerly fixed as it did have the dreaded logic board problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Brian

    Hi again!
So this is with the new board? Was there sectoring of the lines?
If so that's the graphics chip most likely.
Yes. However, since this has gone on for a while and I never finished taking care of it, I can't remember all the details like sectoring of the lines.
The problem used to occur after the computer had booted and was on for maybe an hour.
So it freezes? That does sound like a GPU problem esp as it happens after an hour or so. (thermal flex causing separation of BGA)
Normally, yes. I have also gotten the kernel panic screen (You must restart your computer now). When it froze this morning, I had started to download a System Update. The clock ran, but I couldn't force-quit anything. What about the fact that the drive doesn't mount in Target Disk Mode?
You could pull the board and send it for reball.
I've also found a few boards on eBay that so far are less than the reball, but unless it was already reballed, then I run the risk of this happening again in the future, right?
    Thanks again for your help!
    Brian

  • New Logic Board - Time Machine wants to create a new backup

This has me stumped. I just got a new hard drive and logic board from Apple. Plugged my external hard drive into my computer, turned time machine off and 'Entered Time Machine' to copy files over back to my computer. All worked as advertised.
Once I had some of my files copied over, I went to turn time machine on. Time Machine informed me that I didn't have enough space on my hard drive (it wants ~94 gigs free and it has 30 free, but it should have been able to delete the oldest backup, free up some space, and we should have moved on). At no point did it ask me if I wanted to reuse the backup or not.
I then wondered if it needed to get further along the backup process before prompting me to reuse the volume or not. So, I excluded like 98% of my hard drive and made the backup ~3 gigs. The backup happened, but now in my Backups.backupdb I have a MyComputer which contains all of my old time machine backups, and a MyComputer_2 which contains this last backup.
I trashed the MyComputer_2 folder and 'Entered Time Machine'. It pulled from the correct place and I saw my backups trailing back into history, but apparently I no longer have permission to view the desktop folder as well as the other 'protected' folders in my backed up home folder. I repaired permissions on the off chance that it would fix it, but it didn't.
Something is clearly broken, do the masses have any suggestions? I found multiple suggestions for how to deal with this under 10.5, but nothing about 10.6.
    Thank You,
    Zac

    zac850 wrote:
But what if I want to reuse my backup? How would I go about doing that? I trashed the time machine plist file (the only one i found was "Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist") in the hopes that after a restart I would be prompted to reuse the backup. No luck.
I don't know why you didn't get the "reuse" prompt, but that wouldn't prevent a new, full backup. You have a new internal HD. Even if it has the same name as the old one, Time Machine knows it's a different disk, so will back up everything on it. You cannot prevent that.
Your first problem is, you didn't transfer things onto the new drive properly (Apple Stores often give bad or misleading advice on that.)
And, you may have corrupted your backups by "trashing" the MyComputer_2 folder. Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*never move, change, or delete anything in your backups+* via the Finder.
Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that works, your best bet is probably to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You obviously had a problem with your Mac; depending on what happened and when, it's possible that damaged your installation of OSX and/or some of your data. If your last backup(s) were done after that started, the corruption may have been backed-up.
If that's a possibility, and you do the restore properly, but it fails, try it again, but select an earlier backup.

  • Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz - Bad Logic Board or Power Management Issue?

I have a Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz/1.5GB/80GB which I bought non-working. It has not yet been disassembled or examined by a certified tech. This is it's issue (which replicates): the computer powers on. It makes a single warning tone, then the LED flashed at least 15 times (too fast to count). Then the posting chord is heard. Hard drive spins up. Then nothing (no video). Won’t boot from any disk. I have changed the RAM and tested the RAM banks with known-to-be-good RAM from another DP1.8GHz G5. The warning tone stopped once or twice after this switch, but then it didn’t chime. I changed the PRAM battery, but not with as new one. However, after installing the used one and then resetting the PMU, it displayed video briefly for the first time. While installed in the other 1.8GHz G5, the hard drive was formatted, given a clean install of OS X 10.4.11, and then moved into this computer where is never mounts. The computer is not accessible through TDM.
Do I have a bad logic board? Bad CPUs? A power managment issue? A RAM issue?

Through my own trial and error troubleshooting, I have found the CPUs to be in good working order and the logic board passes the Apple Service Diagnostic every time. Despite the installation of numerous pairs of modules that worked in another DP1.8GHz, the computer has a RAM issue-it gives the "no good RAM" tone most of the time when it powers up (after a PMU reset it does not). Also the computer boots from disk or into Open Firmware but the disk utility can't see either hard drive so I may have a bad SATA controller.
