Liquid shampoo in headphone jack - "headphones" mode
Hello. Dumb as I was, I had my iPhone 4 with me in the shower. I got liquid shampoo in the headphone jack spot. Now, I'm guessing it's dried and my phone volume mode is stuck in "headphones". I tried using a vacuum to suck it out, the blow drier, plugging in and unplugging headphones to the jack, sucking air out myself, using Q-tips. I'm at a loss. I don't know what else to do. It even smells like shampoo/tastes like it.
Can someone help me???
This is terrible.
Thank you.
Unfortunately, I really did! Never to do it again!
PS: it fixed, magically. Was laying around and the sound came back. No clue how it happened but I'm grateful it did.
Thanks for all the help! And for not bashing me too hard for bringing my phone in the shower with me.

My iPhone is stuck in headphone mode. I've tried inserting and removing headphone jacks, blowing compress air into jack opening, using warm air from hair dryer, and a number of setting changes, but the iphone is still in headphone mode.
it's a hardware issue

The reason why this is, is because you either have the "change sounds with buttons" setting ON or, you have installed either a faulty version of iOS 6.1 or a version which has an extremely massive bug in it. You can, however, get it out of headphone mode by following these steps;
Step 1: Check if your "change with sounds with buttons" setting is off.
Step 2: if step 1 is as said, go onto iTunes and go to "restore".(This WILL delete all of you devices data but if you have it backed up on iCloud or on iTunes so you dont need to panic.
If all of those steps seem to not be the case, contact your nearest apple store or phone their hotline.
I hope this helped some people in distress.Briansyddal - you might be able to manage your phone without a PC, but many of us can't, especially those of us with large iTunes libraries. How do you propose I manage my 250GB of music using only a phone? Maybe I could go out and buy 10 iPhones and spread my library out among them!
Catz537 - I have the same problem as you and I've spent hours on the web trying to find a solution to it. It was a problem with iOS 7 and 8.1.1 doesn't fix it. The the only advice from Apple is completely useless because it requires you, effectively, to delete and recreate your iTunes library and lose all your metadata, album art, notes etc and there's also no guarantee it will work. I wish I could be more help (even more - I wish Apple could be more help) - I updated to 8.1.1 at 1400 today. At 2200 I'm still "waiting for changes to be applied" for a measly 16GB of music transfer. -
Water in audio jack made phone permanently in headphone mode
Today I had my Lifeproof case on my iPhone 5C and somehow water got inside the case. I think water got into the audio port because now my phone is stuck in headphone mode because it thinks something's in there. I tried sucking out the water, blowing in the port, resetting my phone, and quickly putting headphones in and out - all suggestions I found on other posts. None of those methods have worked and as far as I can tell there isn't any other damage to my phone. Any suggestions?

Hello to any others out there with my issue and have found a solution!
My ipod touch 5th gen is brand new! Just purchased this product end of July and I love it to death. Today however I ran into an issue that I simply cannot solve on my own. I was oovoo when my ipod randomly cut off and now it is stuck in headphone mode! I haven't even used my headphones all day so I really do not understand. I am not one of those people who drops their electronics or spills liquids on it (no offense) so there should be no reason for this issue. I have tried EVERYTHING sensical to fix this but now I'm lost. please if anyone with the same issue has fixed theirs, please let me know the secret. I mean I didn't spend 350$ for this to happen within 30 days.
Thank you for your time!- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

CNET solution to any Headjack device being stuck in headphone mode
This is something I received in email from CNET.
One frustration many iPhone (or any Apple device with headphones) owners will undoubtedly experience is a situation where their handset remains in headphones mode, despite no headphones being plugged in.
The solution to this problem can be quite easy, though a steady hand is recommended.
Symptoms
If this situation occurs, you'll most likely figure it out pretty quickly:
You slide to unlock your iPhone and the "click" sound is not heard.
You press the volume buttons to increase or decrease the ringer and the headphones volume setting appears instead.
You launch applications, games, or videos that normally have sound and hear nothing.
You cannot hear your music through the built-in speakers.
So what's up?
This issue generally occurs when something (most likely pocket lint) is lodged in the headphone jack on your headset. It can seem like the operating system is acting up or your speaker is broken, but don't panic.
A simple headphone jack cleaning can get your volume back to normal.
With a simple paperclip you can save yourself tons of frustration. All you have to do is bend out one end of it, and using extreme caution, carefully fish out the lint from your headphone jack.
You will want to be sure not to scratch any of the contact points in the jack or the liquid submersion indicator at the bottom of the jack. Debris can get lodged in there pretty tight (especially if you use headphones a lot), so be sure to get it all out.
If your eyesight is pretty good, you can generally see everything in the headphone jack with a steady beam of natural light or under a good lamp at the right angle. Otherwise, use a small flashlight to be sure you get everything.
To test, simply press your volume buttons (without headphones plugged in, of course). The volume indicator on the screen should be changing the "ringer" levels. If it is still changing the "headphones" levels, there may still be debris in the jack.
And, while you've got your paperclip out, you can gently scrape out any debris that has collected in the dock connector port on the bottom of your device. This will ensure proper connections for data transfers, peripherals, and charging.
If you've tried everything here, or are hesitant about cleaning your device, take it in to your closest Apple Store (be sure to make a Genius Bar appointment), Apple consultant, or AppleCare technician, and they can get you operational in no time.have you tried resetting the phone by holding the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time until the phone restarts?

Getting stuck in Headphone mode not necessarily a hardware issue, is it?
I've read on the net that cleaning the headphone jack can correct this issue. I've also read that inserting the headphones and removing them many times (I think I've seen 7 or 8 times) can also correct the issue. None of these issues worked for me.
What I did notice is that the presence of my headphones was indeed being detected. With the headphones plugged-in, I set the volume to a low volume, for example. With the headphones removed, I set the volume near maximum. Mind you, the phone is in Headphone mode, and won't normally play out of the speaker. But when you insert the headphones, in this example, the volume jumps to the low setting, and when the headphones are removed, the volume jumps to the near maximum setting.
So insertion and removal of the headphones is indeed detected. So this isn't a hardware issue, then, is it? There's got to be something else going on.Well, I backed up, erased, and restored to get proper functionality. No longer stuck in headphone mode. I tried compressed air, and cleaning the jack. Those attempts didn't fix me. I believe it's just a bug that will eventually get fixed, or a setting that will reset the logic associated with the headphone.

How do i get my iphone 4s out of being stuck in headphones mode. When i dont even have headphones plugged in, it says headphones ringer. I've tried blowing and sucking in the jack, didnt work. I tried using a blowdrier in the jack, didn't work. I also tried putting it in the freezer while in a plastic bag, trying to clean it with a qu tip, and plugging and unplugging the headphones more than 100 times, still nothing and i also restored, reset, and put my iphone in DFU mode, and still nothing seems to work. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY OTHER WAY I NEED HELP PLEASEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! ANYONE ANY OTHER WAYS TO FIX IT?!?!??!? That would be very helpful
I had the same problem. I squirted a drop of WD40 in the headphone hole and then used a plastic dental toothpick and twisted it around in the hole. It amazingly worked.
Good luck -
my ipod 4g is stuck in headphone mode and i tried EVERYTHING but no solution HELP I DONT WANT TO CHANGE MY IPOD FOR ANOTHER ONE !!!!! I really want to hear all my stuff without using my headphones every second of the day!!! PLEASE!!!!!
If restoring from backup did not solve the problem you have a problem with the headphone jack. If under warranty Apple will replace it under warranty. There are third-partys places that can replace it too. Yu can, if you are capible, replace it yourself. See:

My iPhone5 is stuck on headphone mode
My iphone just randomly got stuck on headphone mode. I tried plugging in headphones and wiggling it, sicking a toothpick inside to see if there was anything stuck, and sucking on the jack and blowing on the jack. Nothing has worked so far. Help!
Using just the headphones stick them in the port about 5 times all the way in and all the way out. Worst comes to worst RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost). -
