List of Arch Linux ports - to the wiki, just a thought.

So I know that Arch Linux is x86 optimised, and I know there is a mobile and a PPC version... what other versions are there?
There is also Arch Hurd, and another one which I forgot.
Is there a wiki page which summarises the different version?
if there isn't, as they all essentially belong to Arch Linux, shouldn't there be a wiki page?

  • Arch Linux MailServer, Point the Way, Please

    Hi guys,
    Hope you still remember me, long time no write,
    I have been using Arch Linux as a Desktop for years, but have never played much with using it as a server. Now I have my own company and so since I work in the Technology area who better to make the servers for my company than I?
    Here is the thing, I have already an Arch Linux WebServer running, and I want to have a MailServer too running on the same machine, just because I have always wanted to, and because the SSL certification I'm trying to get requires an @mydomain.com email for it to be the approver of the SSL, thats why I need to do this. I have two options:
    This wiki entry, for Postfix or this entry of a simple mail server
    Guys, since I'm new to this, can you point the way that I should follow?
    -Thanks in advance,

    They both look pretty similar... For a 'simple' / 'traditional' mail server, you can't go wrong with Postfix and friends. I have been running an Arch-based mail server for a couple of years now (hosted @Linode) using Postfix (PostgreSQL Virtual Users) and Dovecot. SQLGrey is pretty much the only anti-spam I have on it and we get very few spam across the 30 or so domains the server handles.
    OTOH, if this is just for the SSL Certificate stuff, why not Google Apps (or similar) the domain? https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/standard/new3

  • Change order of Forum title? (put "Arch Linux Forums" at the end)

    I don't know If this was suggested earlier (although I did a quick search), but when I have several tabs of this forum opened all i see is "(Arch Favicon) Arch..." "(Arch Favicon) Arch...".
    I think it would be kind of useful to put it this way instead of "Arch Linux Forums / XYZ":
    XYZ - Arch Linux Forums

    carlocci wrote:...because I can read "Ar..." and I know exactly where the Arch forums block of tabs ends.
    Doesn't the Arch logo favicon give that away?
    carlocci wrote:if we put Arch Linux on the right it would MOVE ACCORDING TO THE LENGTH OF THE THREAD TITLE!!! Which is overwhelmingly unaesthetic!
    It currently already moves according the the length of the thread title... Except at the moment it moves left instead of right

I also fixed a tiny spelling error in the German page. I also doublechecked all the links to make sure they are live. As the French would day, "J'encule les moustiques"

  • Arch linux lxc in debian host.

    Hi. I have been playing with lxc recently. Im running them on a debian host. I have created a couple of debian lxc and a centos lxc inside the host. Now im trying to create an arch lxc. There is an arch linux template provided by the debian package but it requires pacman installed on the host system in order to work. This is a production server and i dont want to install binaries untracked, so compiling pacman with make, is not an option.
    I decided to create an Arch linux chroot as the wiki says by dowloading a tarball.
    Im able to chroot sucessfully to it and install some packages. I have created the lxc dev/  files by following the arch wiki, and reading the archlinux template. Then i created a config file for the linux container and a fstab file. I got these from the archlinux template and copying other lxc config and fstab files (debian and centos one).
    However hen i try to boot the container with lxc-start i got
    lxc-start: File exists - failed to symlink '/dev/pts/ptmx'->'/dev/ptmx'
    lxc-start: failed to setup the new pts instance
    lxc-start: failed to setup the container
    lxc-start: invalid sequence number 1. expected 2
    lxc-start: failed to spawn 'arch'
    So i remove /dev/ptmx  into the lxc.
    Then i got:
    lxc-start: No such file or directory - failed to exec /sbin/init
    lxc-start: invalid sequence number 1. expected 2
    lxc-start: failed to spawn 'arch
    And here im trapped, i cant find /sbin/init, it doesn't exist, in a normal arch installation /sbin/init is pointing to /lib/systemd/systemd .
    What to do now?? Is it impossible to setup a lxc with arch inside  a systemv hosts system?????
    here is my config file:
    xc.utsname=arch
    lxc.tty=4
    lxc.pts=1024
    lxc.rootfs=/srv/lib/lxc/arch/rootfs
    lxc.mount=/srv/lib/lxc/arch/fstab
    #networking
    #lxc.network.type=${lxc_network_type}
    #lxc.network.flags=up
    #lxc.network.link=${lxc_network_link}
    #lxc.network.name=eth0
    #lxc.network.mtu=1500
    #cgroups
    lxc.cgroup.devices.deny = a
    # /dev/null and zero
    # /dev/null and zero
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:3 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:5 rwm
    # consoles
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 5:1 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 5:0 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 4:0 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 4:1 rwm
    # /dev/{,u}random
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:9 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:8 rwm
    # /dev/pts
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 136:* rwm
    # rtc
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 254:0 rwm
    and fstab
    proc proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
    sysfs sys sysfs defaults 0 0

    I'm not sure if you've tried Docker yet, but it took about 3 minutes to have a working Arch Docker container on my Ubuntu 12.04 server:

  • First alternative skin for the Neuf Box 4 : Arch Linux skin !

    Since the last firmware version of the Neuf Box 4, it is now possible to customize its web interface with skins.
    As I've not seen any skin yet, I decided to make my own, base on the design of archlinux.org.
    The result is here : Arch Linux skin for the NB4
    with details on how to use it.
    Tell me what you think

    Would you be willing to post a larger image?  That one is so tiny that it is hard to see.  It seems like a great project, and from what I can see, it looks good.
    When I first read the description, "integrated access device" sounded like some corporate/marketing drivel.  But, it seems like a great device:  "DSL modem that supports ADSL, ADSL2+, and fiber connections. It also integrates a a WiFi access point and three-port Ethernet switch, an RJ-11 phone jack with analog-to-IP phone network adapter, a print server for USB printers (two host ports are provided), a USB device port for USB networking with a PC, and a special Ethernet port for connection to an available TV decoder box."
    Wow.

  • Where is the command file in arch linux?

    Hi!
    Switching over from debian and Mac OS I'm missing some details in Arch Linux. At the moment there is an issue with my NagiosQL setup. In the config part I need to tell NagiosQL where to check if Icinga (a nagios replacement) is running by the path to its command file. Icinga gets started by systemctl. Usually I would look in /var/run, but there is no icinga.pid or such thing. Where do PID files reside?
    Thanks

    awado wrote:Do I have to run it as another user?
    Hmm. The second page I linked says this:
    Before you install the package create the user icinga:icinga with these commands:
    # groupadd -g 667 icinga
    # useradd -u 667 -g icinga -G http -d /dev/null -s /bin/false icinga
    Did you try this? I probably don't don't what I'm talking about, because I've never used this package.

  • [Solved]How can I create a bootable backup of my arch linux partition?

    I'm trying to get my arch linux installation to have a gui, specifically KDE. I downloaded Xorg and the nvidia proprietary driver 340.24. After installing the nvidia driver and rebooting, my screen stays black and I can't see my console. I can still login and reboot but I just can't see my screen. I've also tried booting into the arch linux fallback listed in the grub bootloader but that also had a black screen. At this point, I just reinstalled Arch Linux since I didn't really have anything on it anyway but this time I hope not to run into this problem. I will try installing a different driver but if I do run into the same problem, I want to be able to just copy over a backup of my OS and just boot off of that instead of completely reinstalling the system. Thanks in advance.
    Edit: I read up a bit on the dd command and learned that it can effectively copy an entire partition including the master boot record. Could this be the possible solution? I just wanted to post this edit here to make sure.
    Last edited by Firephyz (2014-07-19 20:06:00)

    Backing up using dd
    When you clone your entire disk the MBR will also be copied over. The wiki just states you can back up just the MBR itself if need be.
    I strongly do not recommend just reinstalling your system in the future unless it's needed, you learn nothing from it and it can drive away other users from helping you. Especially if its just and issue to do with Xorg.

  • Arch Linux and Splashy, a big update

    edit 2:
    If you don't want to build from sources have a look at this post: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 03#p371403
    edit:
    UPDATED LINK:
    http://slexiw.netsons.org/files/splashy-stuff7.tar.gz
    About me:
    I'm a professional developer (mainly c/c++) with 10 years of development experience. I've never programmed in bash before so this is my first experience. My Linux knowledge isn't good either but i learned a lot thanks to Arch Linux.
    About the thread:
    I need a boot splash for a mini-pc I'm building and i want, of course, use Arch Linux. The current status is pretty depressive, initscripts-splash are outdated and there is no real support for user-mode boot splashing system (like splashy).
    A few suggestions (IMHO) for the Arch Linux developers:
    -Integrate the splash system in the official initscripts. If you write a wrapper like start_daemon and stop_daemon to be used in /etc/rc.multi and /etc/rc.shutdown, we can limit the changes to just /etc/rc.d/functions and at least the initscripts-splash will be more maintainable and the whole code more clean.
    -Patch killall5 to add the support to ignore pids. The patch is really small and the one used by Ubuntu is http://patches.ubuntu.com/s/sysvinit/ex … ids.dpatch. There is a package in AUR that uses a different patch: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16445. I tested it and so far it worked fine, no problems to be reported.
    Why do we need a patched killall5? Splashy gets killed early during the shutdown process and the whole purpose of having a splash system is defeated. Currently Splashy cannot handle the reboot/shutdown.
    Enough talking, now back to the real stuff. I've modified the initscript-splash package (completely rewritten) and the splashy package (almost completely rewritten).
    I've also written a new package to support splashy themes. I'm using these packages for my system and i never had any problem so far.
    initscripts-splash:
    Rewritten to fit my needs for Splashy. Based on initscripts-2008.05-1 (in testing, if you are not using the testing repo you should better wait till the package hits core).
    It only supports MY Splashy package, no other splash system is supported, not even the "old" Splashy package from AUR.
    splashy:
    Based on the great work done by the maintainers and the contributors of the package in AUR. A lot has been rewritten and it's actually a lot different.
    splashy-themes:
    Simple package with just 1 theme (for now), depends on archlinux-wallpaper and uses a little hack to use the wallpapers provided. I will provide new themes as soon as i have time.
    Splashy now supports:
    Progress bar
    Text output
    Shutdown/Reboot
    Still working on resume/suspend and "verbose on error".
    Installation tutorial:
    -Download, compile and install sysvinit-mod from aur: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16445
    -Remove your old initscripts or initscripts-splash package, remember to back /etc/rc.conf and /etc/inittab before.
    -Download, build and install initscripts-splash from http://slexiw.netsons.org/files/initscr … ash.tar.gz
    -Download, build and install splashy from http://slexiw.netsons.org/files/splashy.tar.gz
    -Download, build and install splashy-themes from http://slexiw.netsons.org/files/splashy-themes.tar.gz
    -You may want to restore your old /etc/rc.conf and /etc/inittab now.
    -Add SPLASH="splashy" to the end of /etc/rc.conf.
    -Edit /etc/splashy/config.xml to select the theme you want (to list the installed themes do "ls /usr/share/splashy/themes/", use the directory name as the theme name).
    -Add the "splashy" hook to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (mine is after v86d and before autodetect)
    -Rebuild your initramfs: mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img
    -Add "splash" to the kernel command line, if you are not using uvesafb (v86d hook) add vga=791 too. You should also add "quiet".
    If you are still confused follow this guide: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Splashy
    Looking for suggestions, bug reports and patches!
    Thank you for reading this, you've done what i couldn't do, i can't believe i wrote all that cr*p.

    Now, we've gone through this a couple of times, and I don't actually want to integrate splash SPECIFIC stuff in the initscripts.
    However, we have the ability to override functions used by the initscripts. All we need to do is extrapolate out the pieces that you would need so that you can override them.
    So, if you would be willing to provide a patch against git (http://projects.archlinux.org/?p=initsc … ;a=summary) which extrapolates the pieces you need, we could get that applied, and you simply need to dump your overriding functions in /etc/rc.d/functions.d/. NOTE: submit the patch to the bug tracker, it will get lost if you just post it on the forums.
    Alternatively, you can just tell us (http://bugs.archlinux.org/) which pieces you want extrapolated, but this will take much longer, as I don't think anyone dealing with this stuff is really gung-ho about splash support.
    I will probably provide a patch after i studied the code a little deeper The /etc/rc.d/functions.d/ solution seems the right way to implement it.

    This seems a little silly to me. I'm sure there's 10 or 20 other ways you could implement the same functionality without needing to patch a quasi-critical binary just for splash support. The patch affects all users. Splashy does not.
    I could not find an alternative solution by myself, as i stated my Linux knowledge isn't more than average. If you could provide me some hints I'll be happy to do some further research on the issue and provide a patch. I'll be glad to drop the sysvinit-mod dependency.
    Without the right know-how i just went the "mainstream way" and did what Debian/Ubuntu did.
    Edit:
    I didn't know you could ovveride functions, this will be a great boost for the initscripts-splash project Thank you!

  • Arch Linux Gallery

    I am proud to present the re-opening of the new Arch Linux Gallery!
    The Arch Linux Gallery is a site dedicated to screenshots of (guess what?) Arch Linux. It is meant to be a repository for screenshots, configs, artistic creations, and anything else Arch Linux-related.
    When registering, zenphoto will provide you with your own personal album to which you can upload images and configs.
    The only caveat is that, for now, it only supports .txt for text objects. So when uploading configs, they should be of .txt extension. Extensions need to be added, and I'm not sure of all the extensions that will need to be added, so if you want to request an extension to be added please post here and let me know.
    Gallery searching, ie. filtering for only Openbox, is tag-driven, so make sure to tag photos with relevant information. Once some content starts being uploaded I can begin to create some dynamic albums of common content. I also plan to have a dynamic album for each month (like the screenshot threads) but I still need to figure out how to make that possible.
    Special thanks to dennizjov who provided the server and domain, Ghost1227 for the wonderful logo, and the zenphoto devs, an amazing piece of software found over at http://www.zenphoto.org/
    Here's the link, and have fun!

    Is nothing being displayed my fault or the site's fault?
    I go to gallery, and it lists some names with question mark looking graphics beside them.  Then I click the name, and it comes to a page that looks like I should be expecting to see a picture but has nothing.
    Oh, and if I click archive after clicking a name, I see:
    Notice: Undefined variable: typeGallery in /home/web29205/domains/archlinuxgallery.com/public_html/themes/arch/archive.php on line 14
    Either way though, thanks for picking this up and running with it.  It looks like a great idea!

    at this point the pixels begin to change from black to white. until the monitor becomes completely white and black horizontal line appears at the center.

    What??  The first post clearly said archlinux, but if this is debian, you are asking in the wrong place.  Did you just use debian because the arch iso was unusable?  Did these visual distrubances completely prevent login?
    can you link me the article?
    Not likely.  Is your google broken?
    EDIT: in hindsight this post was more abrupt than needed for a new-comer to the forums.  Please pardon the tone - but the content was exactly as intended.  We are happy to help when it is needed, but archlinux users are expected to be able to do some of their own research.  If you really need the wiki link provided to you, you most likely would never be happy with archlinux.

  • Emacs compiled with S/MIME support in Arch Linux

    I have been trying without success to get Emacs 23.2 and Gnus 5.13 in Arch Linux to generate messages signed with S/MIME certificates, which are frequently used by the U.S. government and by businesses.  My configuration works fine on my Ubuntu workstation (as opposed to my Arch Linux laptop).  The error I usually get is "smime-sign-buffer is void."  I am beginning to wonder whether Emacs/Gnus on Arch is compiled with S/MIME support.  Does anyone happen to know, or has anyone had any success getting signatures with S/MIME to work on Arch?
    Thanks,
    Bill Day

    I can't help you with emacs, but to find out what options the packages in the repos are compiled with you want abs. With abs you can then use the same PKGBUILD that was used to make the official packages, and change only what you need to change, as opposed to starting from scratch when compiling.

  • Arch Linux Magazine, February 2010

    Another month, another issue!
    As promised, we are slowly working back towards releasing the monthly copy of Arch Linux Magazine on the first. This month I was only a few short hours off from my target time. On the flip side, this month we have a few new features (and one noticeably missing, sorry... it'll be back next month). Hopefully we'll be able to keep doing the new features and, over time, build ALM up to what I know it can be.
    My sincerest thanks to those of you who continue to contribute, and for those of you who are interested in contributing in the future (or translating), we now have a wiki page designed specifically for you! As for those who are waiting for sources for translation, I haven't forgotten you and will be sending you the link in the morning... it's long past my bedtime.
    And so, without further ado...

    If you're referring to the Desk Shot, it's my desk.  The PDF has my name, but the text version doesn't seem to.
    As for why...I always find it interesting to see what kind of environment people work in, simply because it can often make me feel better about mine   Besides that, probably isn't much else to say for/against it.  Similar to the Desk Shot thread on the forums, not too many people posted in it, but there were a few who were interested in it.

  • Arch Linux OS X Boot Menu Label

    Hi guys,
    I am pretty new to Linux. I just finished installing Arch Linux on my macbook pro. I followed the instructions on the wiki and now I'm able to boot into Arch Linux by selecting the "EFI Boot" option from the menu after holding down the alt key on startup. Everything is working pretty smoothly so far but I was wondering if its possible to change the label of the Arch Linux option in the menu from "EFI Boot" to "Arch Linux". On the manpage for bless it says the following:
    --label name Render a text label used in the firmware-based OS picker
    I tried using the following commands to bless the boot partition, but they have no effect on the label.
    $ sudo bless --folder="Arch Linux" --file="Arch Linux/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi" --label=ArchLinux
    $ sudo bless --mount="Arch Linux" --file="Arch Linux/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi" --label=ArchLinux
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ahmed

    Once you get to the [ramfs /]# prompt, type in:
    mv /dev/disk/by-label/(insert name of the current cd here) /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH-201005
    exit
    It should then be able to boot from the cd
    did:
    mv /dev/disk/by-label/(insert name of the current cd here) /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH-201005
    exit
    shows:
    ERROR: mounting was successful, but /bootmnt/isomounts file doex not exist.
    Then I checked:
    cd /bootmnt
    ls
    archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso
    exit
    shows another problem /boot/init does not exist
    exit
    kernel panic!
