List of fileserver shared  music incomplete - NAS

Hi,
I've just copied my Music folder onto a Linkstation Live NAS and it looked like it was working really well - all the PC on my home network could see the server and play the music. Looking into it further though I now notice that loads of music is missing. THere are approx 550 artists and 750 Albums, but the share only shows approx 390 and 440. Even stranger is that some of the music from the same ablum is missing .... showing tracks 1-7 but missing tracks 8-10.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

I have a similar problem, also with a Linkstation Live. Here's my situation: My library is stored on the NAS, but the way the songs got there was through my desktop computer. So on my desktop computer, my library is complete and nothing is missing. In iTunes, I chose to share my libraries, so when I open iTunes on my laptop, I can see the NAS and iTunes says that it is checking the library and showing it to me. But from what I can tell, it is sort of frozen in time - only showing me my library as it looked a couple of months ago. For the life of me I can't figure out why, because it should update itself. I'm at the point where I'm considering removing iTunes and all related files from the laptop and starting over, to see if that will jumpstart it to view the library correctly. But again, as far as the library as viewed from my desktop computer, nothing appears to be missing.

  • Using remote to play shared music from NAS

Unfortunately, search is off, so I can't see if somebody has already posted similar question.
All of my music is hosted on a ReadyNas Duo NAS unit. A couple of my computers use this as an only way to play music. I'd like to be able to control it using the Remote application, but shared music is not available. Is there a way to make this work?
For the record, on one machine I have a regular iTunes database that uses links to songs on the NAS - that is playable using remote, of course.
    Thank you very much!

    At Last !
Following the recent iTunes 7.1 update I can now share the music from my HiFidelio and play it in Front Row . The first time I try to access the shared music , it fails , but the second time it does indeed load correctly . I think it just takes too long to load the track listings from HiFidelio and Front Row simply doesn't wait long enough for the first attempt to respond , it must still load it in the background which means that the second attempt does work . I suppose if I kept iTunes open I wouldn't have any problems .

  • Wired vs. Wireless network visability to shared music on a NAS

I have upgraded to 10.2.1.1 iTunes, I am running a wired network in my home that also has a WAP connected for my wireless devices.  The issue is, when connected to the wireless I can see my shared music that resides on my NAS in iTunes.  If I connect my laptop to the wired network, the share disappears.
    Why is this?

As a client OS X supports the major two VPN protocols, PPTP and L2TP over IPSec. As a server technically OS X supports both of these too but the difference is this sort of thing was more aimed at OS X Server so there is no nice GUI to work with.
Of course I wouldn't have suggested this if there wasn't a nicer solution at hand. I'm sure there are others too but what I know works (as I use it) is [iVPN|http://macserve.org.uk/projects/ivpn>, essentially a GUI wrapper to the already installed daemons. As far as performance goes it's dependent on both your connection at home and the connection wherever you are but then that would also be the case if trying to access the NAS remotely anyway. I'd also guess this will result in a safer connection too as the file sharing protocols you're using probably aren't concerned about encryption.
The only thing I'd say is I do believe there are issues if both the home network and the place you are at are both using the same private IP range, assuming both locations are behind a router. The reason being if both use the same range how can your machine know when you mean one network and not the other. Careful selection of the IP range at home though can minimise this by choosing a non-standard private IP range. So a lot of home routers, the majority I've come into contact with anyway use 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx. The entire 10.xxx.xxx.xxx though, assuming the router allows you to do so is open and if you pick something in the upper half the chances of both places doing the same has to be very slim.

  • HT1203 I have done everything on this list.  How do I see the shared music in iTunes?

I have done everything on the list "to share your music with multiple user accounts on one computer" on Windows.  Now, how do I see the shared music?

Tones is the new name for Ringtones. If the entry is missing in the left-hand column of iTunes then enable it from Edit > Preferences > General tab.
If your existing tones are not syncing properly to your iOS device then uncheck the option to Sync Tones from the Tones tab when the device is connected, sync the device, check the option and sync again.
A properly constituted .m4r file (<30secs AAC at 128k) thrown into the Automatically add to iTunes folder should end up getting added to the correct section of the library.

  • ITunes Sharing on a NAS?

I have a wired home network consisting of a Mac Mini running 10.6.8, an iMac with 10.8.5, and a MacPro with 10.8.5.  All three have iTunes 11.0.4 but my main iTunes library is on the iMac.  I've been running it as a shared library so that I can access it from the other computers but there are times when the iMac isn't running so I want to network the music library.  I got a Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo NAS, installed one harddrive, set up the iTunes media server on the LinkStation, created a new shared Music folder on the drive and then copied the entire iTunes folder from the iMac to the NAS.  I then did an Option/Start iTunes on each computer and told iTunes to Choose the new library on the NAS.  On each computer, this works perfectly and I can run iTunes on any one of them individually without a problem.  However, if iTunes is running on one of the computers and I try to run it on a second computer at the same time, I get the following error message:
Does this look like an iTunes issue to anyone?  Is there some other process I need to follow to allow all three computers to have simultaneous access to the library or is this even possible?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    Dennis

    Yes you can!
The way i did it was open a new iTunes account on in a folder on you NAS drive and open your itunes from there.
If you change the location of your iTunes files by preference, advance then change - your Library data base file is still on your mac, thus you cant open from anywhere on your network.
But if you create a new iTunes account on your NAS its all located on there and all you have to do is locate your iTunes library file from any computer with an iTunes program to open and use your complete iTunes account and what's stored on it. but remember for other people to open the account you have to log off yourself.
The good thing is i can open it from my iMac on my profile so when i sync my iPhone i get my ical, address book email etc and when my wife opens it from her MBP and from her profile she gets all her ical, address book mail etc and we get to shall all the music, movies and applications.
the only downside i can see is its a bit slow over NAS especially over WiFi but thats what you get for all your eggs in one basket.
any amount of people can use your account this way and as for formating you will find the software that comes with your NAS will format it in its own way usually FAT that way any computer can connect.
any problems give me a shout.

  • ITunes does not show Shared Music and cannot listen to Radio

Hi, I would really appreciate some help on this issue - thanks!
In itunes, the 'Shared Music' folder on the left side panel simply does not exist no matter how many times I check/uncheck the 'Look for Shared Music' in configurations. In addition, I cannot connect to any radio stations listed.
I have no trouble accessing the itunes music store and other online features, so I do not think it is my internet. That said, I fear it maybe my norton internet security software thats causing these problems. Just to be safe, I have given total permission/access to anything itunes related: Itunes.exe, itunes music helper.exe, quicktimeplayer.exe, QTinfoapplication.exe and QTtask.exe. Also, I have (to no success), installed Bonjour services from apple and also Rendezvous Proxy. So yeah.. I am pretty much out of ideas.
I live in a college environment, so I'd really like to check out other people's music. My friends on both PCs and Macs do get this problem at all. In addition, before the itunes 4.7 upgrade, I was able to access most people's shared music. However, with additional upgrades, i noticed that my shared music list would dwindle from say 50 to 20 then 10, etc until it reached nill! Pretty scary, so your help is totally appreciated.
    Thanks for reading!

ok b noir I don't have much time but, idt it worked. But, let me explain. Some of the files I didn't see in the registry like the ipod manager. I deleted some of the ipod services and all of the other files I saw that had the word iPod. But, not all of them. There were also many files that were iTunes files. IDK if you wanted me to delete those too.
I did the whole thing restarted it and then opened iTunes and iPod updater. I hoped and hoped that it would work. When I plugged it in. THere were some "Pop" sounds. You know the sounds that usually come up when you add new hardware. But, nothin' came up as a bubble from the taskbar. Just a couple seconds later a message appeared. And this is it: "Windows has finished installing new devices. The Software that supports your device requires that you restart your computer. You must restart your computer before the new settings take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?" and that's it. The iPod isn't recognized by iPod Updater or iTunes that I have opened.
So if you could tell me what I may have done wrong. Thanx and goodbye.
P.S. This was updated but I tried it again and I couldn't find the ones I needed like iPodmanager and all those. I have the thing that allows me to see hidden files but, I couldn't find them. So I deleted everything that had the name "iPod" and a few files that were iTunes files. I restarted it after downloading iTunes and iPod updater. I plugged it in, nothing. This little thing at the bottom popped up about the new software. That usually happens when it doesn't work. And it said that if I didn't restart it, it wouldn't work properly like it usually says. So I restarted it and when I got back I plugged it in again and the folder with the iPod stuff popped up, which also means that it didn't work. THen I thought about the format because it may have that same problem. So i formatted it in FAT 32 and it formatted. I also put it in disk mode before I formatted it. nothing happened and it still wasn't recognized. Please help.

  • Multiple listings for Shared Music

I have 2 users on an iMac both sharing their music library.
Both users appear several times in each others "Shared Music" list. It seems that every time the computer is put to sleep and then woken up again the user is added to the "Shared Music" again, so I end up with around 10 listings for the same user.
Only solution so far is quitting iTunes.
Any suggestions what might cause this? (iTunes 6.0.5. on 10.4.7)

Not having that problem with 3.0 on my Touch (2G). Did you check the Album Artist field to make sure they're consistent for all albums by the artist? How about Disk number and Number of Disks?

  • ITunes5 + WinXP + "Hide Radio" = Missing Shared Music

I don't know if this is specific to iTunes5 because I never tried it in earlier versions. However, today I decided to take a stroll through the preferences and noticed I could hide the Party Shuffle and Radio. I deselected those options and applied my changes. I then noticed a person's shared library had disappeared from the source tree. I narrowed down to hiding Radio. Showing the Radio shows people's shared music. I connected and started listening to their music. Then I re-hid the Radio - the connection is still maintained - it's just not displayed.
Now, I'm not sure where to report this issue. Is this the right place? I tried to provide Feedback but was taken to a Music Request page. ???
    Peace --Mel

Right, few more very annoying bugs!
    24) Firstly, in the native Mail app, when choosing an address from the phone's contacts list, only the first few contacts appear!! This is so surprising and annoying!? I've found, however, when trying to add a received mail address to the contacts. the entire the list comes up! So why the problem when finding a send to address???
    25) Secondly, a very weird phenomenon!! In the phone log, the "All Received data" amount is different to the "Received" amount showing in the "Data Alert" function! It is about half a MB out! How can this be?
    26) Thirdly, I've found that the vibrating is too soft! Anybody else out there found this an issue?? The old phones would vibrate stronger, and I suppose Nokia didn't want their new phones sounding like washing machines, but I find I cannot always feel the vibrating, even after buying a special belt case from Germany for about £8!! So maybe give the option to the user to set how strong it should vibrate??!

  • ITunes 10.5 won't play music off NAS, 9.2 did.

Keep music on NAS drive so can be shared by 5 other users, the NAS does support iTunes. After upgrade to 10.5, iTunes won't play from the NAS. The drive does appear in the left hand column, but new library screen opens just briefly then closes. Same for both PCs and Macs. 10.5 working on each computer's own library.  What changed in 10.5? fixes?

Nearly all NAS devices use Firefly as an iTunes 'server'. Firefly is based on the mt-daapd code. Both Firefly and mt-daapd are effectively discontinued and unsupported. While Firefly does not and never has supported newer technologies like the Apple Remote app for iPhones and also never supported connecting to an Apple TV2, it did work for basic use via iTunes for Mac or Windows.
Apple have unfortunately been tweaking the daap protocol in iTunes and as a result have now several times broken compatibility with Firefly.
The ideal solution would be for all the NAS makers to dump Firefly since it is well behind the times, and switch to an alternative open-source package called forked-daap which does work with Apple Remote and Apple TV2.
I can say that NetGear have now issued a patch for Firefly running on their ReadyNAS boxes so it once again can limp along and work with iTunes 10.5. This particular occasions cause of the problem in iTunes 10.5 has been discovered and how to resolve it (clearly since NetGear have already fixed theirs) so it should not be too long before QNAP and the others catch up.
In the long run it would still be better if they all switched to forked-daap.

  • I cant delete shared music ( my own tunes )

Hi, why cant i like delete my own shared music from my computer. my name is andrew and i got a folder named (Andrew Li's Mp3) and then when i go to itunes to clear out Andrew Li's Tunes the list there cant clear. i try to clear it, it wont clear.
    someone help me?

Thank you for the suggestions. In response to the playlist possibility, I don't have a playlist made. I intentionally deleted it thinking that might be the problem.
As far as swiping the songs to delete them, I was able to delete the majority of the ones I didn't want by doing this. But these particular ones will not delete by swiping to the left. If I try that they will begin to play.

  • Replace library from y:\shared music\ to \\mybookworld\shared music\

    Hi,
I have stored my itunes files on my NAS with the absolute path Y:\shared music\. Unfortunately I have added files to the library also with the relative path \\mybookworld\shared music\.
The problem is that the same file might be twice in the library, one entry with Y:\ and one with \\MYBOOKWORLD\
    How could I replace Y:\ by \\MYBOOKWORLD ?
    Any hint is really appriciated?
    Christian

I've written a few scripts that might be able to help.
Unconsolidated scans selected tracks or your entire library to identify those that are outside your designated media folder.
ConsolidateByMoving is meant to move files (rather than copy them as iTunes does) but if a file already exists in the "new" location it will just switch the link from the "old" one. I did have it set up to send the file on the old path to the recycle bin, but given your situation where two paths can refer to the same file I have just updated the script to make this an optional feature that is normally disabled but could be restored by changing a declaration in the script.
DeDuper is designed to remove unwanted duplicates. Once you've used the previous script to make sure all files are using the same root path (\\MYBOOKWORLD?) then this one should correctly identify multiple entries to the same file or physical duplicates and remove any that are found. See this thread for more background.
N.b. "entire library" in the context of these scripts currently excludes Apps & Ringtones. Apps can be processed in a separate run, but for some reason Ringtones are currently invisible to my scripts.

  • Problem seeing shared music

For the past few months I have not been able to see any shared music from other computers on my network in the iTunes source list. I have followed instructions in other postings yet none have seemed to work. I even opened up new sharing ports, disabled my firewall, returned all my firewall settings to their defaults, and upgraded to the newest version of iTunes...nothing seems to work. My virus program is Symantec and I have been able to share music while using this program in the past. Is there anyone who may know how to help me fix this? Other students on my same network are able to share music, so I know that it's my computer specifically that's messed up. Thanks for your help!

    Hello altotoni!
You can locate your Mac's shared library in the music app on your iPad just going to the ...(More) tab at the bottom of the app. If your Mac is on, and iTunes is running on it, you can see the Mac's library. Just check it, and all your stuff will be accessible from your iPad. Enjoy!
Note: if you turn  off your Mac or just iTunes on it, the sharing stops working.
    I hope this helps.

  • Sharing Music: Some Songs Don't Show Up on 2nd Computer but Playlist Does

I am sharing songs using iTunes between my Powerbook and my G3 B&W. On the Powerbook, I see all of the Playlists that are on the G3 but if I open SOME (not all) Playlists, there are no songs inside. The songs ARE on the hard drive, however, in the iTunes folders. Any suggestions?
Info: The "missing" songs are all legitimate imports from purchased CDs.
More info: The G3 music is on an external hard drive.
More info: The G3 music was originally on the Powerbook, I copied it to the external drive and then I exported/imported the Library and Playlists onto the G3 to use the second machine as the music server. Did I mess up the import of the Playlists?
Even more info: the G3 is one version of iTunes older than the Powerbook (which is up to date).
    Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem. My library on my G4 tower has 17 371 songs, but it only shows up on the PowerBook as 16 991. (Both machines are running iTunes 6.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.4.) I first noticed this problem months ago, and it's persisted through several new versions of iTunes, as well as several complete nuke-and-rebuilds of the iTunes library on my tower.
