List of new features in update?

It would have been nice if Apple posted a feature list of what came with the new upgrade. I'm a little worried that a new feature such as buying ringtones came before contact search, contact categories, cut and paste or synchronization of notes. Does anyone else feel like Apple's priorities for feature upgrades is a little off the mark?
They added the ability to rotate the screen while viewing attachments, but you still can view a regular email in rotated mode. Is the API they have for their own phone so difficult to work with that they can't add tons of features easily.
I mean you can view excel and word documents which are attached to emails, but you can't sync documents from your computer? Even if they were read only, it would be a fantastic feature.
I've been pretty happy with the iPhone so far, but it seems like the other devices out there are going to be much more feature rich within the next couple of months.

Right now Apple is busy fixing glitches, releasing as much new software as possible and preparing the new SDK for the iPhone so cut them some slack. If your not happy with your phone, feel free to return it. You can request all your feature here, http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • Looking for list of new features in 11.2

I have been trying to find a list of the new features, if any, that have been released with 11.2. Would anyone have a link the new features documentation?
    thanks
    R.

The first link below is to the 11.2 new features guide. The second link below is supposedly the 11.2 new features for Oracle Text, however the only new features listed are for 11.1 and prior, so it appears that either there aren't any new Text features in 11.2 since 11.1 or they left them out.

Hehe, but it's not definite. It should be somewhere at Apple.com...?

  • A2DP in 10.5?  Nothing on the list of new features

I am looking at all of the new features in 10.5, and I don't see this anywhere. Other than rumor/speculation, has anyone received confirmation from apple that this will be supported without 3rd party hacks?
How about support for the zillions of bluetooth phones that can be used as modems. Once again, 3rd party scripts are nice, but I would hope that Apple will support these. I hate to say it, but WinTel machines are more plug and play nowdays than many apple products (please see this apple and include these features!)
(I originaly posted this in the bluetooth iphone forum in error.)

A2DP was in the betas of 10.5, so unless Apple removes this feature from the final version, it should be there.
You can't really expect Apple to test +"the zillions of bluetooth phones that can be used as modems"+. Apple has built the functionality in to the OS, and it is designed to be extendable via modem scripts, plugins etc. That's where the developer community or phone manufacturers come in.
WinTel machines don't come out-of-the-box with support for zillions of phones - the phones themselves are provided with support from the manufacturers on a CD. So really, you should be asking the phone manufacturers why they don't do the same for Mac users, especially as the functionality is already in the Mac OS.

  • Set Show tag for Movies gives sub-menus, new feature to update 2.3?

I heard some people mention using playlist for reducing the size of the movies list, but I've noticed that if you set the Show tag for movies (which I have already done for some of mine where the movies are part of a series - for example Discworld movies recorded off TV and converted for the AppleTV) that you now get an entry under Movies which is taken from the Show tag and a '>' symbol at the end of the row. If you select the entry, you then get a sub-menu of those movies sharing that Show tag.
This is not a feature I've heard mentioned before, either on this forum or in the spec. for update 2.3 and was wondering if this was new to update 2.3 and whether this is now a feature or something which Apple could remove in the next update?

Just to add a bit of doom and gloom
Apple still haven't fixed the issue of the ordering of movies in the Shared Movies list. Under My Movies, the AppleTV seems to use the Sort Name tag (correctly in my opinion), but under Shared Movies the AppleTV is still using the Name tag. I have the same videos under both menus, so I know it's an issue with the way the AppleTV is handling the tags between the two menus.
Just wanted to add my bit of doom and gloom for that day, that's all

  • List of new features in PSE11 vs. PSE10

Does anyone know where I can get a comprehensive list of features that are new in PSE11 relative to PSE10?  I've seen the high level lists and videos.  But I'm looking for a complete technical type list, not a marketing oriented one.  I am interested in metadata handling, and the marketing lists never get down to that sort of thing.
Also, I understand that PSE comes out with a new version every September/October.  Does anyone have any info on what will be in PSE12, particularly with regards to metadata handling?
    Thanks.

I would be very much surprised if Adobe issued such technical type lists... especially for Elements. It seems that even for Photoshop or Lightroom, there is not much technical info in that metadata question.

The usual answer is "Those who know don't tell, those who tell don't know..."

i hav noticed that on updating ipod video 5g with ipod update 1.2,i noticed only one change i.e brightness control.
    search function is not there,and
somebody please tell what is gapless playback, i dont know how it works??!!
i,m unable to tranfer manually songs to ipod,(by drog n drop).i hav to copy to itunes lib then on to music folder of ipod
does the 5g video ipod really supports 640x480 video on
    update

With 1.2 5th generation iPods get:
    - Gapless Playback
    - Game Support
    - Movie Support
    - Brightness Control
    - 640x480 Resolution
    - Quick Scroll (the letters you are scrolling through appear when scrolling fast)
Gapless playback allows songs to flow seamlessly together without a gap - Pink Floyd The Wall, The Beatles' Abbey Road, etc. To me, it's the most significant iPod feature since the click wheel.
For manual sync, be sure that option is selected in the iPod preferences.

  • New feature on update 10.4.6

I always run permissions verify and repair after an update, usually displayed are all the information about what has changed. When I ran permissions repair after this update, this information is no longer displayed. Is this something new?
Power Book 17 inch 1.5 ghrz processor   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 gigs of Ram, FCHD, ADOBE CS, QT7

scb's disdain for Repair Permissions is, let's say, legendary, but he's correct that most suggestions about running Repair Permissions are made reflexively without actual regard for the problem in a post. But if you want evidence that Apple didn't write the code into Disk Utility just for laughs, after updating to 10.4.6, install the latest Flash player update --- I can tell you firsthand that triggered a couple of permissions repairs. Misset permnissions can cause real problems.
In addition to the Flash Player installer, if you ever install device drivers from HP or anything at all from Adobe, you will get actual permissions repairs. Not all third-party applications trample on Apple software file permissions (keep in mind that Repair Permissions works on Apple's software), but some certainly do.
If you have any Macs with older OS X versions in use, Repair Permissions may make repairs on Apple's own software as well --- I've seen this several times updating iTunes under OS X 10.2.8, for instance. If all your Apple software is up to date, you should never see Repair Permissions do anything after installing Apple software.
The more recent your OS X version, the less you'll need to run Repair Permissions. On the other hand, the more recent the version of Disk Utility you use, the less time it takes to actually run Repair Permissions (there's a noticable difference between 10.2.8 and 10.4.6 on similar sized hard drives). I don't know of any actual statistics on what percentage of times posters told to run Repair Permissions have reported that it helped or that it did nothing, but it's a non-trivial percentage either way. If you run Repair Permissions from the hard drive (or from an OS X Install disc with OS X 10.3.4 or later), Repair Permissions will properly read the Recipt packages on the hard drive to set permissions. Running Repair Permissions will not magically fix any and all problems, but as intended it won't hurt anything, either.

  • List of new features, changes, and improvements from Designer ES2 to ES3 and then ES3 to ES4

I have been scouring the Adobe website and even contacted customer service for a list of all the changes made from Livecycle Designer ES2 to ES3 and then ES3 to ES4 with no luck.  It seems like something basic that would be available.  I am currently using ES2 and need to know if anything was changed or added to ES3 and then ES4 to see if it is worth the cost of upgrading.  I do not use any of the other components of Livecycle and pretty much all the information on the Adobe website always goes back to those programs or how Designer works with those programs and it does not apply to me.
It is frustrating because it seems like Designer is an neglected stepchild of the ES Suite.

  • Pkgfile rewritten in python with new feature

    hi.
I have made a rewrite of pkgfile from the pkgtools package in python to speed up search by using a sqlite db file.
    $ pkgfile -h
    Usage: pkgfile [ACTIONS] [OPTIONS] filename
    Options:
--version show program's version number and exit
-h, --help show this help message and exit
-b, --binaries only show files in a {s}bin/ directory. Works with -s,
    -l
-c, --case-sensitive make searches case sensitive
-g, --glob allow the use of * and ? as wildcards.
-r, --regex allow the use of regex in searches
-L, --local search only in the local pacman repository
    -v, --verbose enable verbose output
    ACTIONS:
-i, --info provides information about the package owning a file
-l, --list list files of a given package; similar to "pacman -Ql"
-s, --search search which package owns a file
-u, --update update to the latest filelist. This requires write
    permission to /var/cache/pkgtools/lists
A new feature is that it does not download files list if there is no new update, saving bandwidth.
It's a fork on github so you can try it there git://github.com/solsticedhiver/pkgtools.git
Or just change the _gitroot variable to git://github.com/solsticedhiver/pkgtools.git in the PKGBUILD for pkgtools-git from AUR
I exchanged with Daenyth which showed some interest for it. And made me correct my style code ;-). But we're still waiting for him to accept the pull request on github (to a new branch in its git repo ?), and to possibly merge it upstream later.
Tell me what you think about it.
If you find bugs, you could report it on github.

After just changing the _gitroot make complained:
    ==> Starting make...
rm: cannot remove `/home/karol/test/t1/pkgtools-git/src/pkgtools-build': No such file or directory
    Aborting...
    'touch pkgtools-build' "fixed it" ;P
Core, extra, community and local repo were OK, but I got errors for other repos:

This pkgfile implementations still takes about 30s to find what I'm looking for but does so w/o thrashing my disk - good work :-)

    no, but i can try
The curtain has been pulled back on iPhone 4, and the list of new features is massive: There's multitasking (finally!), a refreshed interface, and literally hundreds of other changes, all coming this summer. Here's the rundown.
The new OS will ship in June (Fall for iPad, and a developer preview is available today, so we can expect to have plenty of apps updated and ready for launch.
New Features: Multitasking, App Folders and More
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • Multitasking: It's here, finally. It's handled with a simple task switcher: double click your home button, and you get a list of running apps. Select, switch, done. Multitasking is limited to audio streaming, VoIP and GPS apps, as well as a few other allowances: they can finish specific, important tasks in the background, for example. As far as non-music/nav/VoIP apps, those can be suspended in the background, but not left running. (See below.) Full details here.
    • Fast app switching: With iPhone 4's multitasking, most apps aren't actually running in the background—just certain functions of the app, like an audio stream or a GPS lock. But! All apps can now be frozen, in full, so that when you reopen them, they're restored to exactly the state they were in when they were closed.
    • Local notifications: Notifications can be sent between apps on the phone, not just from remote servers. In other words, if something important happens in an app you've opened and moved away from, a notification will pop up in whatever app you're using at the time, effectively saying "switch back to me!" It's a fairly clever way to keep track of multiple apps without the need for a start bar or dock-type interface. From Apple's dev guidelines:
The advantage of local notifications is that they are independent of your application. Once a notification is scheduled, the system manages the delivery of it. Your application does not even have to be running when the notification is delivered.
    Apple's official line:
iPhone OS 4's new multitasking offers users a new way to quickly move between apps, and provides developers seven new multitasking services to easily add multitasking features to their apps. These services include background audio, so apps like Pandora can play music in the background, and VoIP, so VoIP apps can receive a VoIP call even when the iPhone is asleep or the user is running other apps. iPhone OS 4 provides multitasking to third party apps while preserving battery life and foreground app performance, which has until now proved elusive on mobile devices.
And some more technical details, again from Apple's developer guidelines:
An application can request a finite amount of time to complete some important task. An application can declare itself as supporting specific services that require regular background execution time. An application can use local notifications to generate user alerts at designated times, whether or not the application is running.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • App folders: Now you can sort your apps into folders! That's homescreen clutter solved, just like that. Apple's description:
Folders help users better organize and quickly access their apps. Simply drag one app icon onto another, and a new folder is automatically created. The folder is automatically given a name based on the App Store category of that app, such as "Games," which the user can easily rename. Using folders, users can now organize and access over 2,000 apps on their iPhone.
    2160, to be exact.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • A new Mail app: Unified inboxes, multiple Exchange accounts, fast inbox switching, threaded messages: These new features are actually a huge deal, since the iPhone's mail client has barely changed since 2007, and Apple doesn't allow alternative mail apps. Apple's pitch:
iPhone OS 4 delivers the best mail experience on a mobile phone with its new Unified Inbox, allowing users to see messages from all their email accounts displayed together in a single inbox. With just a few taps, users can quickly switch between inboxes to see messages from any single account.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features• iBooks: Oh hey, that iBooks ebook reader app and accompanying ebook store we first met on the iPad has ambled on down to the iPhone. Nice, since you can now take your books with you wherever you go, as oppose to wherever you go with your iPad.
    • Custom backgrounds: Jailbreakers have them. ****, the iPad has them. Now you can choose a persistent background for your iPhone—and not just for the lockscreen.
    • Game Center: Apple's going to roll out a centralized gaming service—a multiplayer network like PSN or Xbox Live—to help connect games to one another, by the end on the year. There are 3rd-party services that already do this, like OpenFeint. They will probably die. Full details here.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • iAd advertising: It looks like Apple's finally making use of Quattro, that mobile ad company it gobbled up a few months ago, by rolling out its own advertising platform, a turnkey ad plugin for app developers called iAd. The theory here is that instead of relying on links to external websites, which pull users out of apps whenever they tap on an ad, developers can use Apple's new tools to keep people in the app while still showing them advertising—sort of like popover browser windows. You can watch videos, play games, and even buy apps from within these ads. This is in the iPhone OS 4 developer tools, but it's not explicitly a part of OS 4, so you won't see apps with iAds until later this year. Full details here.
    • 5x digital zoom: Could this hint at a higher quality camera in the next hardware? 3.2 megapixels seems a bit low for 5x digital zoom.
    • Bluetooth keyboards: Another carryover from the iPad, Bluetooth keyboard support will finally come to iPhone 4.
    • A bevy of other new developer features, including 1500 new APIs to play with: See here for more details.
    The Hidden Features
Now that we've had a few days to use the OS, we've compiled a huge list of features not covered in the keynote.
Which Devices Get It, and When?
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
When the software ships in the summer, iPhone 3GSes and iPod Touch 3rd-gens devices will get all of the new features. The iPhone 3G and Touch 2G will get "many things," which doesn't include multitasking. I repeat: the iPhone 3G won't get multitasking, ever. iPhone 2Gs will be left on a hillside somewhere to die of exposure, or something.
Apple didn't drop any clues about the next iPhone's hardware, but it's a fair bet that we'll see some changes come June.
    What About the iPad?
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
The iPad won't get the 4.0 upgrade until Fall of this year, a few months after the iPhone does. So, you'll be able to multitask on your dinky little iPhone before you'll be even be able to listen to Pandora and check your email at the same time on your giant iPad.

  • Crvs2010 beta - parameter panel - new feature

    Hello,
I read the list of  new features for crvs2010. One of the new features listed in the message is the Parameter Panel. The runtime engine supports a parameter panel on the left-hand side. You can optionally place parameters on the panel.
I did not see the feature in the beta that I have installed. Is it in the beta yet, or is there really something wrong with my installation?
I would greatly appreciate it if someone would let me know if they have this feature?
    Thank you
    Tracy

    No problem David.
I know that you have a lot on your plate and I have been known to be a handful, as they say.
I can understand not updating the vs viewer, when there are other, more up to date options available. For the most post Visual Studio and Crystal are for what us old timers would have called "hard core" programmers, not end users. Today, though, that is changing, more end-users are sometimes very involved in creating what they need.
When I can catch my breath, I am going to search for a beginners tutorial that covers setting up the .net winform viewer.
As usual, thank you for all of your help. I really appreciate it.
