List of songs missing, playback unaffected.

Hey folks, just bought a new mac, moved all my music over, and things worked fine yesterday. Today, itunes is empty. Upon opening, the portion of the window that ought to have the song list is blank. If the itunes store is opened, things appear normally. If you navigate back to the "music" tab or any other tab, the static music store images remain visible but do not respond to clicking, the dynamic elements disappear. Activating songs from their folder on the hardrive plays things normally; they do not have to load into itunes. Furthermore, skipping tracks works exactly as it should and you can move between different artists like normal, which would suggest the music is loaded into itunes appropriately. Itunes just doesn't appear to be able to display the list. Already tried uninstalling. Any ideas?

Wondering if you haven't been bitten by the new "feature" of iOS 5, as was my son. turingtest2 explained it very well in reply to my own query about "missing" songs in playlists.

  • I have songs missing on iTunes but they are on my iPhone. How can I copy from the iPhone into iTunes on my mac air

I have songs missing from my iTunes on the computer but they are on my iPhone 3s and my iPad mini. How can I get them into iTunes so they are in my library.?I have the latest iTunes on my commuter. Thanks for any suggestions.

If they were purchased from iTunes then connect the phone to your Mac's iTunes and the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases should copy them over. If they came from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs) then you will need a third-party program on your Mac to copy them back - there are some listed half-way down this page : Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
If by 'missing' you mean that you have them listed in the Music part of your iTunes library but get the 'would you like to locate' message when trying to play them then you will need to delete them from there for the Transfer Purchases to work - otherwise that will see those entries in your library and assume that you still have them somewhere and not copy them back.

  • HT1660 My itunes library has automatically started to list my songs alphabetically.  I do not want this.  How do I change it so that when albums come up, the songs are listed in the order of the imported album, NOT alphabetically.

For the missing Artists on your iPod, make sure their tracks in iTunes are not marked as "Part of a compilation" in iTunes. You can do this by highlighting the track, right->clicking on them and choosing "Get Info" from the shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Info tab and make sure there is NO tick mark next to this option in the lower right hand corner. Lastly, sync the updated changes to your iPod.

  • Ipod not displaying list of songs

    Hello,
Recently I went to update my ipod and noticed it wouldn't display the list of music that is on it while connected to itunes. It still reports that i have 23 megabytes of space left. My ipod seems to still have all the songs on it, but won't list them. I tried resetting it and using the latest sofware to access it but no luck. I guess the next step is to restore it but i really dont want to since i haven't backed up my muic . Anyone have a similar problem? Any hints?

    update:
When using itunes 7, after i connect it seems to find the music however it doesn't list it as music, it regards it as other. When I connect it runs through the list of songs and says "determining gapless playback information" then anaylizing X of 2340 "Song Name" Then it reports the space as capacity 9.25gb audio 21.9mb other 9.23gb freespace 8.5mb. (I did add a 21.9mb audio file when i noticed something was wrong)

  • Is a playlistthe  only way to customize my list of songs?

I see that a list of songs can be rearranged somewhat by going to album or some other heading. But is a playlist the only way that I can arrange my songs in any order I choose, regardless of title, file number, date or whatever? For instance, I have many of my songs in genres. I'd like to arrange the playing order of the songs in each genre my own way, but I don't see how I can. It looks like I have to make a separate playlist of each genre in order to do what I wish. That's a lot of duplication. Thanks for any help.

If you want the songs in a playlist arranged in a particular way, you may have to end up creating a playlist for that purpose but, if I understand your question correctly now, I'm not sure how else iTunes could be expected to know how you want the songs to be ordered ... since it might not be the same way someone else wants them to be ordered.
For the record, most of us find iTunes ability to organize our music in different ways one of its best features. Of course that doesn't mean that you have to like it but here, for what it's worth, are some ideas that you may find of interest ... with apologies if you already know about them. ; - )
    - You can create a smart playlist based on Genre (Jazz or whatever) and have iTunes sort it based on, among other things, your ratings for the songs or their "recently played", "often played", or "recently added" status.
    - You can have your iTunes Library sorted in different ways by clicking on the various column headings across the top of the main display. And you can choose from a wide variety of column headings by going to the iTunes View menu > View Options.
    - You can use the Browse display panel (View menu > Show Browser) to get a different perspective of your music. Make sure Show genre when browsing is checked in the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > General tab. Now you can choose a specific Genre (or Artist or Album) and sort it by clicking on the column headings as explained previously.
If I'm still missing the point, post back and we can take one more kick at this can.

I recently bought an album on iTunes. 10 of the songs came out corrupt and songs missing parts. What can I do?

Other people have been having similar problems with songs over the last few days, I assume that there has been (and possibly still is) a problem with Apple's servers.
Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting them from your iTunes library and redownl them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if they re-download in the state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that album and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.

  • How can I list the songs in an album in iTunes without having to do it one by one? Some albums are not numbered.

How can I list the songs in an album in iTunes without having to do it one by one? Some albums are not numbered or they show 1. 1. 1. 1. 1. 1. 1.

Poor metadata needs to be corrected if the album is to display properly in iTunes. iTunes sees an "album" as any collection of tracks with the same Album title and the same Album Artist (or Artist if Album Artist isn't set). Each track of the album should have distinct Track V of W and Disc X of Y vaules. W,X,Y are optional, but X may be needed for multi disc albums.

  • How would I export a list of songs on an iPod to a text file?

I found one of my old iPod shuffles that's synced to an old PC that is long gone... I'm looking for a way to export what's currently on the iPod Shuffle as a text file or something so I can remember that "phase" in my life in the form of a playlist. I used to be able to do this in iTunes 10, but not quite sure how in 11+. Does anyone know how to do this?

If you are able to connect the shuffle to iTunes and show its list of songs, it may be best to take a screen shot of iTunes window at max size.  Scroll the list and take additional screen shots as needed.
NOTE:  There is a command in the menu bar to
File -> Library -> Export Playlist...
Give this command with the shuffle's Music list selected in the sidebar.  However, this command is meant to create a text file that is later imported into iTunes, so it is not formatted to be nicely readable to human eyes.
iTunes 11.x may hide the sidebar (along left side of window).  To show the sidebar, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  To show the list of songs on the shuffle...
    • If the shuffle is 3rd or 4th gen, find the shuffle in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  Click the small triangle to the left of the shuffle's name, to drop down its content list (indented below the shuffle).  Click on Music there.
    • If the shuffle is 1st or 2nd gen, the shuffle itself is one playlist.  Select it in the sidebar, under DEVICES, so that its Settings screen is shown to the right.  Toward the top, where is says "Settings," click on On This iPod (to the right).
You can actually off-load the song files from the shuffle.  You cannot use iTunes to do this (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store), but there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on the computer's drive, I suggest you create a new playlist in iTunes, and name it appropriately (like "Old iPod Songs").  Show the song files in an Windows Explorer window, and drag them to that playlist in the iTunes window.  iTunes will add the songs to the (general) iTunes library, but that playlist will only show the songs that were on the shuffle.  And you can actually play the songs for a shot of "nostalgia" (not just look at their names).

  • HT1923 I have just updated itunes and now I can't print the playlist when I burn a list to cd. How do  make a cd case cover or list of songs?

I just recently updated itunes and now I can't print the playlist or print a cd case cover. I want to at least print a list of songs to go in the cd case. How do I do that?

beggsc54,  There were some printing bugs in iTunes 11.0 which reportedly have been fixed in 11.0.1.  If you haven't upgraded yet, install the latest iTunes and try again.

  • How do I preview songs within iTunes list of songs on my iPod Shuffle?

I want to hear what songs are on my iPod shuffle with their listed title , so I know what to keep and what to delete.
Because, when you know you want to delete some songs, but do not remember all the titles.

Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  The next step depends on whether your shuffle is 1st or 2nd gen, or if it is 3rd or 4th (current) gen.  If you don't know, this article shows the four types
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1719
1st or 2nd gen - Look over to the right and click on the Contents tab.  That screen shows the list of songs currently on the shuffle.  You should be able to play them off the list.  With a 1st or 2nd gen shuffle, when you do this, you are actually playing the song file that is in your iTunes library (on computer), not the song file that is currently stored on the shuffle (but they should be the same).
3rd or 4th gen - Click on the little triangle next to the shuffle (in sidebar) to "drop down" the iTunes media categories (indented under shuffle).  Select Music.  Over to the right, you should see a list of songs that are currently on the shuffle.  If you have the shuffle set to Manually manage music (on the shuffle's Summary tab), you should be able to play them off the list.  If you use automatic syncing, the song list should be visible, but "grayed out" (not accessible); you need to play the songs from the playlist(s) you sync automatically to the shuffle (in your iTunes library).

  • List of songs on my iPod

Occasionally, I want to edit the album names, etc. for the songs already on my iPod...since I updated to 7, I cannot figure out how to see a list of songs that are on my iPod like I can with the songs that are in my library. Please help.

no, there is contents. i just figured it out.
to recap: i had 2 problems: one was that i couldn't see the contents of the shuffle. the other was that i couldn't eject my shuffle. when i tried to eject, i kept getting the message that i couldn't eject because an application was using the files on the ipod. when i clicked the icon of my shuffle i got the picture of the ipods with the heading "ipod + itunes," as i recall. there were no settings or content tabs.
now i realize there were no tabs because i had not finished the registration of the shuffle on my pc. i had registered the shuffle on the website without using itunes. i didn't realize that there was more i needed to do in itunes because i couldn't see all of the buttons in my window. when i followed through with the registration in itunes all the way to the end, the 2 tabs were revealed and the songs that i had already loaded on the shuffle were listed in "contents." and, i was able to eject the shuffle. apparently itunes (or whatever) was still looking for a completed registration and wouldn't release the shuffle. sigh.
if you can not see the settings and contents tabs in itunes when you click your shuffle in devices or you can not eject the shuffle, look at the window with the picture of the ipods in itunes. there is more below. complete the registration (i had already done so on the web earlier, but my itunes was not complete.).
thanks to everyone for your help.
