List of Wireless Networks disappear/don't show

I'm having major problems with my Macbook Pro. It has all the latest upgrades for Leopard (just checked again for updates - nothing more available). This was a native installation of Leopard - not an upgrade from Tiger.
When I FIRST start my laptop, it connects to the #1 preferred network. But I have 2 routers at home (and I live in an apartment so there's about 12 networks around me) and I often need to switch depending on which end of my condo I am in (concrete walls suck for signals). Any how this is not a signal issue however, as this problem happens when I am in the same room as my router.
When I click the Airport button on the top, the dropdown menu comes out, and fora split second it displays all the networks. But after about half a second (which is NOT enough for me to find and click another network I need to hook into) the list disappears, and truncates to the one I am already on.
So from there I tried "Join Other Network" and it opens a new window, asking me to enter a Network name and what not. When I click on "Show Networks", it used to display all the available networks, but it displays NOTHING - not even the network I am already connected to, using fast and normal internet.
So basically I need to turn my Airport off, open the preferences, change the order of preferred networks on the list of saved networks, and then turn it on again.
Now here's the killer - 50% of the time, after reconnecting, or after waking up from sleep mode, my laptop will FAIL to find internet connection from any of my two routers (while my roomates are doing fine) even with the proper IP addresses and Subnet masks assigned. it basically looks like a healthy connection but I get no internet browsing, email, MSN, nothing.
So basically every time I move from my living room to my bedroom, there's a 50% chance I need to reboot my computer. And there's a 100% chance I need to stumble around settings to make sure my computer finds the right router.

Try the following:
1. Delete Preferred Network(s)
o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
2. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
o Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
o Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
o Restart, or log out then back in.
3. Add Preferred Network(s)
o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
o Restart or log out then back in.

  • Getting the lock symbol to show up in list of wireless networks

Hi all. Whenever I go to the top of my display and click on the airport symbol to see the list of wireless networks available, I always have to click each one individually to see if it is secured or not. I saw a friend's macbook and he has little lock symbols next to each network name in the dropdown list. How do I get this to show up??

I have my own network that's secured and still no lock symbol. My friend's computer shows lock symbols for other random networks he can connect to if he need the passwords. I think there is an option to click somewhere I am not finding?

  • Wrt160n my wireless network disappeared

I just purchased and installed  a wrt160n. I named my wireless network and it worked fine. I even had my sister bring over her laptop and my network showed up on her puter and she was able to sign on fine. Later that evening I went to sign on and my network had disappeared. Iwould move my cursor to  the icon on the tool bar and other local networks show available but mine is gone. Any clues as to what happened and/or what to do about it?

Try to adjust the wireless settings on the router....On the setup page,Change the Channel Width to 20MHz only and Chanel to 11...Under the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on "Save Settings"...power cycle the router and check if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Time Capsule - Extend a Wireless Network Disappeared

I was going in my Time Capsule settings within the Airport Utilities... I wanted to extend my wireless network so I clicked on this option.  When I clicked it... the Time Capsule restarted and now is not showing up in Airport Utilities and there is a flashing amber light on my TC.  Any way I can remove the extend my wireless network and put it back to Join a Wireless network?
    Any help would be awesome...
    Thanks.

We need a bit more information to understand your setup.
What version of AirPort Utility are you using?  If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left corner of the screen. Then click on About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number that you see there.
The Time Capsule cannot "extend" a wireless network unless it is connecting to another Apple router....an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, or another Time Capsule.

  • Wrt54gs router v.5 - my wireless network disappeared

Had a wireless network for a year, and yesterday it was no longer broadcasting.  It does not appear on the available wireless network screen.  Tried to access the router, and cannot do that either.  I am clueless what happened and what to do about it.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Have you done a recent firmware upgrade or anything? I had the same issue, and once I reset the router to factory defaults, the SSID that the router was broadcasting was an unsecured Linksys network. Go into the router settings by typing 192.168.1.1 and find the wirless settings. Look under SSID and see what it says. Change it back to your original network name and secure it.
    Hope it helps.....Rick

  • All wireless networks disappears time to time

sometimes the macbook cannot fined any wireless networks even not mine, at the same plase you have had connected with the same MB PRO. The problem is not with the router cause it cannot finde any other wireless networks which i'm pretty much sure that there is in the building. At some points when i restart the MB PRO the problem is gone and sometimes it is still there. As of this posting the MB PRO cannot find any wireless network but the IPAD is just fine.

I have the same problem with my laptop.
Allow computer to turn off device to save power: is not checked.
Advanced power options: the Wireless Adapter is set to "Maximum Performance".
I have a static ip set to 192.168.1.2
It was working for months then stopped 2 months ago after I had troubles connecting to a friend's wireless network unsuccessfuly. So I believe I must have changed something, but what? I have even removed the wireless adapter and re-added with
    latest drivers.
I have 2 laptops on the wireless LAN. One is connected immediately when I open the lid after sleep, i.e. wireless adaptor enabled & I can browse and work online. The other has to enable the wireless adapter and re-connect to the router
which takes a minute or so. Not a showstopper because I am then up and running... but very frustrating.
I have trawled forums and searched for 2 months now. Could very well have missed the solution somewhere?
Good luck milky9311, I hope we both find the solution here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • "join a wireless network" disappeared

Hi, after I flashed my time capsule with the latest update and updated airport utility I cannot connect my time capsule to my wifi network.
The problem is simple: I do not have the option "join a wireless network" anymore. In the wireless tab I can only either create a new network, or extend an existing network. Anyone knows why?
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

ok I had to do an hard reset and it worked eventually
    Hard reset:
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button, and the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule will hard reset.

When I install the Backberry link software on my PC with windows 7 , my wireless network stop working and can't be found or reinstalled.

Hi Jbrinkmann and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
If you navigate to your network adapters in Windows, does your Wireless adapter appear disabled? Do you see a BlackBerry entry within the network adapters?

  • WRT610n my computer not showing 5GHz wireless network

WRT610 dual band wireless router. I set up 2 networks that are suppose to run simultaneously one at 2.4GHz and one at 5GHz. When I try to connect to a wireless network, my computer only shows the 2.4 network being available. Why? I have a Belkin wireless n USB network adapter. Also, will my 2.4 GHz network support wireless n?

You need an adapter that supports the 5GHz spectrum to use that band.
I don't think I know of any belkin adapters that support 5Ghz.
The 2.4Ghz band that you're seeing is more than likely N unless you've set the router to B/G, B only or G only. The only other option is N only or Mixed. Mixed allows B, G and N modes. N mode only, allows the adapter to only function in the N mode of that band.
The 5GHz band only allows A/N ie: Mixed 5GHz mode, where compatible adapters can function in A or N mode and A only or N only. Also, it's significantly less powerful than the 2.4GHz band. The first thing you may want to try is moving as close to the router as you can. If you still can't see the 5GHz SSID you picked, then you need to buy an adapter than supports 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. They're known as Dual Band adapters, though some sneaky manuf. call older B/G products dual band now. Just make sure the product is advertised as being able to work on the 5Ghz band.
An example of one such product is the Linksys WUSB600N.
    Good Luck.

  • HT4259 Airport Utility 6.1 does note show "extend wireless network" option.  How do I find the feature

I have an airport extreme and the utility is 6.1.  I also have an airport express.  I'd like to use the airport express to extend the WiFi.  The "extend the wireless network" option does not show up in the Airport Utility 6.1.  How do I go about finding that option?  Is it something that doesn't need to be checked in Airport Utility 6.1?

I'm having the same issuse, the only work around I have found is by using an older version of airport utility

  • Dual Band (5ghz and 2.4 ghz) Wireless Network Config and Dropped Connection

Hi, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11N) and a Motorola WR850G (802.11A/B/G) that I'm trying to connect in a dual band setup - but something in my setup is causing the Airport to drop it's connection (before the connection is dropped - everything works great). After I lose connectivity, both routers show up in my list of wireless networks, the light stays green, but I don't have local or internet access. When I try to reconnect, the log on times out. Also, the Airport isn't displayed in the Airport Utility (light is green on the airport itself though). Unplugging and resetting the Airport Allows all computers on the network to connect locally and to the internet for a few hours until the connection drops again. While it is up and running, I have no problems streaming movies off the connected Airdisk, navigating the internet, and connecting both N and G devices to the network.
I'd love to hear from you if you've gotten a similar setup to work, and if possible, have you provide the settings you used to make this work. I've looked around quite a bit and haven't seen a detailed description of the process (even from the Apple documentation). Also, advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated since my wireless networking knowledge is pretty basic.
    My configuration:
Time Warner cable modem connected to the Airport's WAN port. WR850G connected by LAN port to Airport's LAN port. Bridge Mode check box selected on WR850G. Airport setup for 802.11n (5Ghz). Unique SSIDs to determine which network is 'N'. Same password for both networks. My Firmware and utilities are up to date.
    Computers/Devices on Network:
Two Macs with Airport Extreme N cards. A Vista PC with a D-link N card (only compatible with 2.4 Ghz so it connects to the G network). A Vista PC with a GB ethernet card connected to the Airport Extreme. Various other G devices like iPod touches and an old iBook. Airdisk connected to the Airport Extreme.
    Thanks,

I removed the second router (Moto wr850g) and everything seems to be working smoothly. It must be some settings on that one that are causing the problem, but I haven't been able to get it configured correctly. I noticed there were some IP conflicts with my wireless wanting to use the old Moto router IP and trying to assign my Mac an IP from that router. Does anyone know specifically what needs to be disabled on a router in bridge mode? Since I have a third party router there aren't any handy wizards that can configure it for me.
    Thanks again

  • Phantom wireless network!

Hi. I'm not really sure what piece of hardware or software is causing this problem, so this may not be the right place to ask, but here's the deal:
I have a wireless network consisting of a Linksys WRT54G (The one pretty much everyone has), a PowerBook, a Dell laptop and a wired iMac G4. A month or so ago, the wirelessly connected computers lost their ability to connect to the internet. I ended up reseting the router and starting a new network with a new name. After I reset the router, however, I noticed something puzzling. The old network was still showing up!
Even with the router unplugged, the old network shows up in the list of wireless networks on both the Macs and the PC. This persists even after restarting the computers or turning wireless off and on. I'm able to connect to it, and it shows full signal, but will not connect to the internet. It appears side by side with the 'real' network, which works fine.
I can only think of two explanations for this, either I somehow accidentally set up a computer-to-computer network on one of the computers, under the same name as the old network (which I find quite unlikely), or that a third party is spoofing my old network.
The phantom network isn't causing too much of a problem, although my PowerBook keeps connecting to it by default instead of the working one, but it does have me pretty confused, so I was wondering if anyone had a clue as to what was going on.
    Thanks,
    Zweben

"There's a way to get your book to choose the preferred network... did you highlight that old one and hit the minus button?"
Where is the area you're talking about?
"Did you remove it from your Keychain?"
    It's not in my keychain.
"Did you change Passwords along with the name?"
The new network has a new password.
Is there any utility that can give me some more information about the network, to help me figure out where it's coming from?

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my wireless network connections, too. I did a fresh arch install with gnome3 some days ago to avoid any issues when upgrading, but i just can't access any wireless networks now. Everything else works like a charm, though. I followed the usual steps to set up my network/wifi with all the required modules and packages (broadcom-wl from the AUR, etc.) but it doesn't work like it did with gnome2 and xfce4.
My iwconfig/ifconfig output looks like dave1022's. Don't know if this is of any help...
The nm-applet in the gnome3 "panel" actually lists nearby wireless networks, but once I click on one of them, gnome asks me for authentification with my root password (user password does not work). I don't think it should be this way. If I enter my root password here, nothing happens whenever I click on the concerned network to connect to it. I deleted the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<SSID> file to reset the authentification process.
I tried to consult the gnome3 pages in the wiki, but couldn't find any valueable hints either...does anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong or forgotten?
It's exactly the same for me and it's driving me nuts. I'm using iwl3945
    [EDIT]
Well... actually installing the applet solved it for me. Is the applet actually needed for Gnome 3 or is a workaround?

  • WRT54G wireless network gone totally wacky! please help.

I called linksys tech support and they were of absolutely no help. the wireless network was working fine until about an hour ago when my roomate connected her computer to the network. the network was previously configured through windows...but when she connected her computer she connected through her linksys wireless card (which i don't have on my computer.) Somehow in doing this she reconfigured the entire network...entirely new name etc. Now my computer can't connect to the network...I can see it on my list of wireless networks, but the password I was using previously to connect is not working. I get the error message "The network password needs to be 128 bits or 256 bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 8 to 63 ascii characters or 64 hexadecimal characters" I have no idea what that even means. How do I get my original network back so I can reconnect my computer?!

Its doubtful that just by connecting to your router, your roommate caused this problem with your router.
What version of the router do you have?  Some of the WRT54G routers have an SES (Secure Easy Setup) button.  If you push that button accidentally, you will reset your wireless security to a new password.
Were you using wireless security?  If so, which type?  WEP, WPA, or WPA2?
Did you give your router a unique SSID, or are you still using "linksys".  If you are using "linksys", are you sure you are trying to connect to your own network, and not your neighbor's network?  Did the SSID of your router change from what you set it to before?
To correct your problem, point your browser to 192.168.1.1 and login to your router with your user name (if any), and password.  Then go to the "Wireless" tab, "Basic setup" subtab, and correct any entries that are wrong.
Then go to the "Security" tab, "Wireless Security" subtab, and correct any entries that are wrong.
    Reboot entire system.
