List unknown albums by album instead of grouping tracks altogether

How to list albums by each album instead of by track?

That would be no mean feat!

  • Album Display Not grouping tracks correctly

    Hello,
I'm having a strange behavior in iTunes while in 'List View'.
When in list view, when I select an album, I have the first track on it's own with the artwork displayed with track information then there's a separator followed by the artwork again followed by the other tracks.
    It looks like this: http://tinyurl.com/kjugt9
When I go in '~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/<artist>/<album>', all the tracks are in there, all in the same artist/album folder.
I tried to edit all tracks (Get Info) at the same time to set the different values (Artist, year, album, genre, year, etc) but grouping remains the same.
This issue does not cause any specific problem except that for few albums the track 'grouping' is not correct. This is quite random, I see that on few albums but I still don't know what's happening.
Any idea on what I should check next ?
    Thanks

    Problem solved.
At first try I forced update (enabled each checkbox) of each field into the Info & Sorting tab but it remained the same.
Looking at individual tracks I saw that some of them had Sorting info but it could not be updated: deleting the value and clicking OK was not updating the Sort field.
I then selected all the tracks and put a dummy value in every field in the Sorting tab. Tracks were grouped again now. Finally, I edited again all the tracks to deleted the values I previously enterered. Tracks are still grouped again.
I applied that procedure against the remaining albums that had that problem and it worked for each of them.
    Thank you.

  • Coverflow shows multiple unknown albums

Coverflow shows an unknown album for each artist instead of one for all of them. I own the first gen ipod touch if that helps.

iTunes & the iPod may have inconsistent behaviour when it comes to empty values. If you want all tracks with an unknown album value to group together as if one album then the best thing would be to select them all, set the Album field to "Unknown Album" and on the Options tab set Compilation to Yes.
See my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for more on organising your library and working around some of the quirks of iTunes/iPod.

  • Ipod shows unknown album

I have few albums that have album title filled in, but when i put it on ipod it shows as unknown album instead.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Assuming the information is correct in yur iTunes library on the computer:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • When i import my music folder itunes puts alot of albums together in one large unknown album

so when i go to  look for an album , they are in seperate folders in and they have titles,i have to go into the unknown album and find each track its ridiculious  theres gotta be some way i can just re import my whole library  and itunes should find each folder with seperte albums inside it and create albums no matter what the name is, for instance gd1972-6-11,  i changed the name of the folder to live grateful dead, so i should have artist name in itunes that says live grateful dead, then each folder inside that one should be albums.  idk about id3 tags they should b created during import. alot of these files ive had to convert addd album art  and so on, and theres alot of them. im trying to setup the music  for an iphone, this is my second one and the first one i suffered for years looking for certain music inside the ipod and essentially never listened to any of the unkown album jumbles cus the tracks arent in order. now i have trried get info and that has helped in some cases but the ones already inside  the largest unknown album at the bottom about 431 albums mixed up, it doesnt work  get info isnt helping on any one of these albums. im willing to delete itunes or the librarry since i have it set not to copy files and reimport but i need to know what to do for these albums to b reckognized thanks for reading and hope someone has a solution

iTunes doesn't pay attention to the file and folder names, only to the tags. If the files are untagged you can use a third party program like MediaMonkey (Google it, the forum software won't let me post a link today) before you add the tracks to iTunes, or if you can make sure that you add them in such a way that iTunes doesn't rename and move them (turn off the Keep... & Copy... and copy preferences and don't use the Automatically Add to iTunes folder) then I have a script called TagFromFilename at
    samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp#TagFromFilename
that may be able to apply the information provided the tracks are in Artist and then Album folders.

  • I have a new iPod Touch but some of the albums aren't grouping correctly and are just listing the songs individually, how can I fix this?

I got an iPod touch as a Christmas gift to replace an old broken iPod Nano, and it's worked fine apart from this thing with the Albums.  Certain Albums (Albums made up of individual songs by different artists) aren't properly grouping into a single Album, but instead turns each individual song into it's own Album unless the songs are by the same artist, this is really weird since the old Nano never had this issue.  I'm not sure what causes this or how to fix it, I thought maybe turning off "Group by Album Artist" in settings would do the trick but that doesn't seem to have done anything.  Basically I just want to get these songs properly grouped into a Single Album instead of as individual albums for each song and was curious if anyone knew how to do this.
I do apologize if this is confusing, I'm not really sure how to describe the problem.

I feel your pain!  I have the same exact problem.  Have you gotten a solution yet?

  • How can I get my ipod to list the "album artist" instead of "artist" in the music menu, but still show the artist with the featured artist when a song plays?

For example, I am putting Kanye West's album "808's & Heartbreak" on my ipod. The track "Amazing" features Young Jeezy. So in iTunes, I list the track name as "Amazing", the artist as "Kanye West ft. Young Jeezy",  the album artist as "Kanye West", and the album as "808's & Heartbreak". What I want is for my iPod to have a list of album artists instead of artists, so that I can find the song "Amazing" under "Kanye West" instead of "Kanye West ft. Young Jeezy" or "808's & Heartbreak".
And when the song plays, it should say:
    Amazing
    Kanye West ft. Young Jeezy
    808's & Heartbreak
Is there a way I can do that? I tried using the "album artist" field thinking it would do what I wanted to do, but it didnt. I also tried using the "sort artist" field and typed "Kanye West" in there, but that didnt work either. I wish iTunes was simpler and easier or atleast CAME WITH A MANUAL. Any help would be greatly appreciated THanks

Have you tried a different pair of earbuds/headphones to rule out a pair of damaged/faulty ones?  You might also want to make sure the headphones are securely and firmly seated in Nano's headphone jack.  Lastly, check the headphone jack for any signs of debris or damage.  You may need to have the headphone jack replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company.
I assume this static is present on any track you listen to versus only particular ones?

  • When importing a cd it splits the album into separate individual tracks instead of 1 album with numerouse tracks - how do I get them all together

When I import a CD from the Apple Mac drive it splits the cd into numerous single tracks in itunes instead of 1 album with all the tracks. How can I get it to import to the one place. I did try importing the same cd on a friends apple mac to see if it did the same thing and it imported the cd as 1 album with all tracks in there so I can't understand why it's separating them all.

This happens mostly when you import a compilation or a CD that is not noted in the Gracenote Database.
How to change back in one Album:
Mark all titles of that album (shift or cmd click)
Right click and choose "Get info"
Fill in the wanted name in "Album" and "Album Artist*"
Drag&Drop the wanted Album Art to the little window down right in that pane.
iTunes group and sort albums by that two entry's in the info pane. If the CD is not listed in the database but the titels, iTunes split the album to fit the titles to eventually matching albums of the artists.
    Cheers - Lupunus
    * If you import a compilation, choose "various artits" for the Album Artist field.

  • How do I get Itunes to list an album in track order including ignoring featured artists

I recently downloaded Daft Punk's new album after buying it on vinyl. after importing it to itunes, itunes wont list the album in track order. instead it lists the tracks in order per artists. example Daft punk, then Daft punk featuring Pharrel Williams ect...how do i get itunes to understand that they're all the same album and to list them in track order??
    thanks

    Hi bdm105!
Most likely, this is happening because the Album Artist field is different for each song from Random Access Memories. We have an article about song grouping in iTunes, and it can be found here:
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1468
There are a couple ways to fix the information listed for Random Access Memories outlined in that article, but I want to point out one here:
Albums in which all songs don't have the same Album Artist information
iTunes 7 and later includes a new attribute for song files called Album Artist This allows you to assign a primary artist name for an album that many includes songs by several artists. It is important that all songs in the album have the same Album Artist name. To assign an Album Artist, select all the songs in the album and choose Get Infofrom the File menu. Next, type a name in the Album Artist field name such that it will apply to all the selected songs. This field can optionally be left blank if all the songs have the same album name.
The Album Artist field is shown in the above picture, but it is not highlighted. You will also want to make sure the Track Number field contains the correct information for the album, and information on that field can be found here:

  • My songs are listed as albums, artists, etc.

I got the new 30gig i-pod video today. I bought an album from i-tunes and loaded it on my new i-pod. The problem is that it listed all of the songs in every catagory on the i-pod. So when I go into the albums folder it shows all of the songs in the album instead of the name of the album. It also lists all of the songs as artists as well. Oh and another issue is it's listing the songs alphabetically instead of my track listing! What do I do about this? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • 11.1 - Unwatched TV shows sort by 'Unknown Album'

I upgraded to iTunes 11.1 on Wednesday on my Mac.
I had a television show library which corrected displayed and grouped by the TV show title and Season in the 'TV Programmes' > 'Unwatched'.
I've just added the first file to the library since the upgrade (so hadn't looked at iTunes since), and notice that the view has broken under 11.1 - every single item is listed individually as an 'Unknown Album'.
It's very annoying. Can it be put back to how it was before please, or is there a way I can do it?

I think I may have found a solution to this.
    1. Make sure ALL your TV shows have the title of the show (not the title of the episode) in the "Album" field in iTunes.
    2. Make sure you are viewing your TV Shows as "Unwatched" in iTunes. (All the shows should be listed as individually episodes.
    3. Hit command-J (or under the "View" menu select "Show View Options".
    4. A little windows opens giving only one choice which is "Group into Threads".
    5. Select the check box and close the "View Options" window and everything should now be in groups by Series.
Different seasons are still displayed as separate titles. (i.e. Game Of Thrones Season One and Game Of Thrones Season Two will appear as separate entries but at least the individual episodes within each season are now grouped)
Also, and unfortunately, everything is sorted by date with the newest series at the top (as opposed to aphabetical) and the episodes within each series (or group) are also listed with the newest episode first (i.e. if the series has ten episodes then episode 10 starts at the top followed by nine, eight, etc.)
IMO, not a very elegant system and it seems that each iteration of iTunes becomes more and more "dumbed down".  I hope future updates can return some of the sorting controls we've had in the past. (like sorting by colums?)
Anyway, at least we can have the shows back as grouped series, albiet clumsily!
    Hope this helps...

  • When importing songs from a cd into itunes, the songs get separated into multiple albums instead of one.  How do I fix this problem?

I recently tried to import a cd that I got into itunes.  When it imported, instead of being one album by one artist, it created multiple ablums by the same artist.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem to bring all the files into one album by the same artist?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? They are there but the individual song titles aren't listed. They are only listed by album. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also, when I click on music, it will not list options.

My itunes account is messed up. How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? The list's are there but the individual song titles aren't. They are only listed by album. I can only see the song titles as they are played at the top of my itunes. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also when in the itunes store, I am not able to see music genre choices, or search for a song or group.
    Thank you

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

  • Can iTunes show albums just once in list of albums?

    For illustration purposes:
If I have just one album in my library by a single artist: In Album grid view, I'd see one album cover as expected. If you double click the cover you'd see the list of songs in that album - all as expected.
If you click list view (upper right) while looking at the one album cover, you expect to see one line of text with the artist's name, and then if more detail is desired, clicking that text line, you'd get the the list of songs.
Not so... iTunes shows all the songs in that album when going from Album grid view (1 album), to Album list view - all songs in that album.
So... being that I have 100's of albums, instead of seeing a list of albums, I see a list of all songs.
It seems that the only way to see all the albums in your library is in the graphic album cover view?
Can't I see just a text listing of all my albums?

I have 553 artists, 1045 albums and 12,045 songs. What I would like is to see a list of just my 553 artists. Instead I see a list of all 12,045 songs sorted by artist/album. This is very unusable way to look at the data. We need a hierachical view.
Since I have 4 AC/DC albums, for example, my list starts out with AC/DC listed under Artist 40 times since there are 4 albums each with 10 tracks.
I would hope there's a way to just show AC/DC once, with an arrow or ability to double click to open this up just like it was a folder in Finder list view.
Doing so would show me 4 AC/DC albums, clicking any of those would show me the tracks for that album.
I want to see by artist:
    AC/DC
    Aerosmith
    Al Green
And then if I open AC/DC:
    AC/DC
    --Back in Black
    --Dirty Deeds
    --High Voltage
    --Powerage
    Aerosmith
    Al Green
    If I open Back/Black:
    AC/DC
    --Back in Black
    ----Hells Bells
    ----Shoot To Thrill
    ----etc...
    --Dirty Deeds
    --High Voltage
    --Powerage
    Aerosmith
    Al Green
There needs to be a way to collapse all the songs down into by albums and down into by artist.

  • How do I change my iTunes library from albums listing alphabetically back to artist listing alphabetically.  Before the last update to iTunes, everything was listed by artist, now it all is listed by album name.  I can't find a way to return it to artist

Before the latest update to iTunes, everything was listed by artist.  All albums by the same artist were listed together.  Now they are all separated by the name of the album instead of the artist.  How do I return to the other format?

Are you viewing it in Artist view or Album view? In Album view, it should still list albums by artist name, then album name. If you're in Album view, you might be looking for Artist view.
