List view of PDF Table of Contents missing

In iBooks, PDF files can have two types of Table of Contents, thumbnail view and list view. My problem is some of my PDF files lack the list view of the table of contents.
I'm under the impression that the list view TOC in iBooks is created from the bookmarks that exist in the PDF file before importing into iBooks. I've been successful in adding new subheadings in the TOC by modifying the bookmarks in the PDF file before installing to iBooks, so I'll be surprised if that's not the case.
I have two files that have bookmarks in the original PDF file, but when I import into iBooks, there is no option for a list view of the TOC, only the thumbnail view. Can anyone offer any help as to why a PDF file with bookmarks won't show a list view TOC when imported into iBooks?
While we're at it, when you tap on the TOC button in a PDF file in iBooks, it always takes me to the thumbnails view. I would prefer it default to the list view. Is there any way to do that?
Thanks.

There may be more user-friendly ways of doing this, but here's one way:
Open Terminal (in the Utilities folder).
Use "cd" to change directory to the folder you want to print
eg cd /Users/myuser/Documents
Use "ls" to list the contents to a file
ls -al > filelist.txt
You can then open the filelist.txt file from Finder in TextEdit and print it.

  • PDF Table of Contents

I want to create a bookmarked table of contents for a 700+ page document. I figured that I would bookmark the text in the table of contents to go to the appropriate pages...
    ...but...
...I have also been asked if we can also include an easy way to let the user go BACK to the table of contents. In Acrobat, the only way that occurs to me is to add text to every page that says "return to tabe of contents" and bookmark every last one of them.
Does anyone have any better ideas when it comes to making a user-friendly PDF table of contents? (Including with third-party applications?)

It looks like Ihave found it, thanks. THis might work. Just two dummy questions from having just tried it out seconds ago.
    1. Do I have to specify a zoom level for the action? I'd rather that the zoom level remain that which the user had already selected.
    2. I have specified the text to be black on a grey button, but when I save the document and re-open it, the button is grey with no visible text. How do I make the text visible?
    Thanks.

  • How do I locate the page I am viewing in the Table of Contents?

Is there a way to open the table of contents to the page that I am already viewing?
If I have searched a document, and I am at some random page, how do I find out where I am in the table of contents?  For example, in the eclipse help system and IBM's "info centers" there is a button that opens the table of contents to the nearest page to where I am so that I can guage the general intent of the pages I am reading, find related content or quickly assess that this is not what I'm looking for.
I think the TOC is really a collection of "bookmarks" in a PDF file and not a true TOC, but I would assume that if they are sequential there would be a function to open the nearest one.  Can someone tell me if that exists?
    Thanks
    Doug

If you are running Firefox 4 or higher on the "old" computer, then:
    (1) Open Help > Troubleshooting Information
    (2) Click the "Open Containing Folder" button next to "Profile Directory"
    (3) Copy everything to a safe place (please note that the copy of your profile does contain your browsing history and saved passwords, so best not to store in on media that you insert into public PCs)
You can copy the bookmarkbackups folder to a USB flash drive, then on your new computer, import your bookmarks from there. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing%20up%20and%20restoring%20bookmarks Backing up and restoring bookmarks | How to | Firefox Help].
(To clone your entire setup, after you install Firefox on the new PC, you can close it and replace the contents of the new profile folder with the contents you saved from the old computer. That doesn't always work, though.)

  • Viewing Portfolio PDF on iPad: Content Viewer or other?

Adobe Content Viewer: Can it be used to view regular PDF's (created in InDesign, not using DPS)?
I am trying to find the best way (app) to show my portfolio on the iPad. Should I use another app instead? Any suggestions? Thank you!

You can create a .folio and preview it on your iPad by using a free DPS account. To create an application you have to create a paid account, or purchase a one-time licence. Take a look at this FAQ on side loading for more help: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3666113#3666113

  • PDF table of contents spanning multiple PDF files - is it possible?

    Question for Acrobat Experts:
Question 1:  Is it possible for a PDF file to contain a "left-hand-side" index/table of contents that includes the contents from itself AND other PDF files?
I have a set of documentation in 10 separate pdf "books". However, I want users to be able to see the table of contents for all 10 books, even if they only have one book.  Also, if they click a topic from another book, that other book (pdf file) should open.
Is that possible to do using Acrobat? (and if so, which version?)
Question 2:  Is there a way for the all-encompasing Table of Contents to be generated real-time and always be accurate, (even if the user gets a new version of one of the "books", but not the others?)
We want to be able to slip-stream one book at a time to end-users, but have the TOC be accurate at all times.. Not sure if PDF files can do this. I believe CHM files can.
    Thank you!

    Question 1: Yes.

  • How do I view bookmarks in tables of contents like I do in acrobat?

Touch on the bookmark icon at the lower right edge.

  • Generating a PDF Table of Contents Using DDX - DDX puts the string "cover" in all caps

When using DDX to generate a table of contents for a PDF, I discovered that DDX puts the string "cover" in all caps. For example, the item:
    <PDF source="something" bookmarkTitle="Hard Drive Recovery"/>
will result in the table of contents entry "Hard Drive ReCOVERy".
Does anyone know of a way to prevent or work around this?
    Thanks,
    -- Matt

I am curious about this, mainly because, for me, the 'bookmarkTitle' attribute causes an error when the DDX is assembled.

Can I open a pdf available in content server from web? This web based application is non SAP aaplication.
The content server is connected to my SAP system and by using FM ALINK_RFC_DOCUMENTS_GET I get the required link.  I am not sure how can I open this link from ouside SAP system( in SAP system pfd can be open using FM OBJECT_DISPLAY_CONNECTIONS).
I have also gone through the below SAP link also but no luck.

    Hi
I'm not sure you can use this URL outside your SAP System and open it without providing any kind of security credentials.
Anyway what you could do is use ALINK_RFC_TABLE_GET to get your PDF in binary format and compose it in your Web Application

  • Financial Reporting - PDF Table of Contents not working

I am using FR to run scheduled batches each weekend. Some of the books are over 100 pages in length and we have a Table of Contents (TOC) with each book created. The page numbers within the TOC are correct and correspond to the correct report. However, when clicking on the page number in the TOC, it takes us to the incorrect location. It can be a page or two off or it can be 10 pages off. Has anyone experienced this problem? If so, how did you resolve it?
We are on 11.1.2.1 in Prod.

Try with latest patch # 14406630 for 11.1.2.1 as it fixes page number issues.

  • PDF Export Issue - content missing (Not background freeze issue)

    Hi,
Currently having some issues with exporting PDF's from Indesign CS5. When I export the first page (which is based off a master page) the majority of the content gets cut off - so this is images, coloured boxes and strokes and a barcode.(Top Image)
When I cut the content from the master page and paste it onto a standard page, then it prints off ok (Bottom Image), but we can't realistically do this every single time. Its not only in one document that its happened - it has occured with several of our documents and across multiple computers.
I have checked the forum and troubleshooting, have gone through and done the troubleshooting based on document and application level to no help. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/499/cpsid_49998.html#main_DocumentLevel
I've read the different posts regarding background tasks which is not the issue as it is actually exporting it and its fine.
Have restarted the machine, double checked updates, checked whether its a damaged document (its not from what I can tell)
Tried exporting without images (Omit OPI) with same results.
Have checked out the transpency issue (as does contain some transparency but no results).
So thinking it must be something to do with the master pages but I have no idea what.
We were using an external plug in for the barcodes for CS4, that does not work for CS5 so I removed the barcode to see if that was affecting it but again no luck.
    Just to confirm we're running
Adobe CS5 onto our computers - we've run all the the updates both for Adobe Acrobat Pro (9.4) and for all of the CS5.
Its being run on iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.4
Adobe CS4 has been uninstalled and deregistered so no interference there.
Can anyone help me out here or recommend something?
    Thanks in advance.

I've redrawn it all and placed in new images and now its starting to do weird stuff like make the images disappear as well as making part of the transparency 20% (as set by me) but then making another section of it 100%.(See below - top one is correct, bottom is incorrect). I would agree with you that it may just be an issue with the file, except its happening across multiple computers. There's not really any chance its a dud version of CS5 is there? Its all legit so no real reason why it wouldn't be.
Override Master Pages fixes it, but this is pretty disappointing if I need to have to do this every single time as it makes the master pages on half useful.
We do have CS3 actually and I opened it in that, exported it as a .inx but same issue with elements missing - the stroke around the outside disappeared.
Could it be anything to do with bringing across elements from Illustrator? Although the top element is appearing fine, and the bottom transparent element is a copied item so shouldn't be an issue. And the image disappearing - there's no real reason for that.

  • Table of Contents; Missing Titles

    Hello
I have a slight problem with TOC. Using ID cs 4 6.0.6.
It won't include more than 5 of the 26 articles that are in my magazine. I usually just solve this by doing it manually but i wanted this time to work as intented.
I have put all the titles of the articles as (Title style) so it should grasp that one, but then it only adds 5 of them and it adds them in the style of Title even if i said it should change the style to a (body matter) style.
Which makes it look like following:
Instead of putting it where I want it get this, only 5 titles out of more than 20 and with the incorrect style in this case Title style.
    Why is it doing this?
[Edit] Is there some other information I should give to make the problem appear more clear to whoever is reading this?
    //Sincerely Evi

Right. TOC is driven by Paragraph styles, not character styles, and if you applied character styles to the headings to get the formatting you want, that also explains why they didn't take on the formatting you expected inside the TOC itself.
Character styles are used to format isolated text that needs to look differnt from the surrounding text in a paragraph -- a sort of "special case" formatting. Tha basic appearance of all the text in a paragraph is defined as part of the paragraph style.
There are two ways to change the formatting for special cases, character styles, and local overrides. Character styles themselves are not considered an override to the paragraph style, and are very powerful. For the most part they are used to do things like change the size, color or weight of the type, but not the face (though you can do that if you like), to empahsize a bit of text. The advantage of these "minimalist" character styles is that they aply the same attirbutes in any face, so if you edit the paragraph style to change the font, you don't need to also change the font in the character style -- if your style was just to add the bold attribute, your text will remain bold if the new font also has a weight named bold.
THere are complications, though, when bringing text with a character style or local formatting override into a TOC. Applied character styles and local formatting travel with the text and are applied on top of whatever paragraph style is defined for the TOC listings. Thankfully, there is a way around this, and that's to apply these styles in the main text as part of the paragraph style using nested styles or GREP styles (a more complex subject) rather than selecting the text specifically and applying a character style or local formatting. Since the styles are then part of the paragraph style, they do not manifest in the TOC when you change the paragraph style there (sorry if that's confusing).
Boittom line, though, in this case is probalby that you just need to use a properly defined paragraph style for your headings, without adding any character style or local overrides at all.

  • How to include in table of contents the list of figures and list of tables?

How to include in table of content the "Table of contents", "List of figures" and "List of tables"? All are generated with function Table of contents, but they will not appear in generated table of contents even if they have proper style of headings - Heading 1, as other chapter.
I get this in generated Table of contentes of my dissertaion thesis:
    Table of contents
    Preface
    Table of contents <- missing
    List of tables <- missing
    List of figures <- missing
    Introduction
    Main
    Conclusion
Is it ok, that generated lists are not included in table of contents?

    You've just confused me.
My understanding of how this is set up is that either:
This is a book, and there is a master TOC that includes all book documents and a document-specific TOC in each component file, or
This is a single file and there is one master TOC that includes all sections and a section-specific TOC that includes only the individual section.
In the first case, I think you would want two TOC styles set up, one that includes the chapter heads (if I understood how you said this worked) for the for the master, and you would include all docs in the book when you generate it, and a second style for the individual chapters, with the subheadings you want to include.
In the second case, it would be similar, but instead of only one style to cover the section TOCS, I think you would need to create a unique set of pargraph styles for the headings in each section (they can all be the same format, based one section, just with unique names), and then make a TOC style for each section that includes only the styles from that section.
OK,  wait a sec. I just reread what you said: "Another thing: when the numbers are "linked" and updating well, they  display indide a little box. Not a text box, but a kind of little frame  around the numbers. That frame makes it imposible to delete just one  number: when the TOC says that Section 6.1 is in page 135, for example,  you cannot delete just the 5, it deletes, not just the 3 numbers, but  also the doted tab."
I think these are NOT normal TOCs created by using Layout > TOC (but you could replace them with ones that are, if you set up your styles properly and the text you want to include is appearing on the pages). Those little boxes you mention sound like cross-references, which should update automatically without any intervention at all. Unfortunately, cross-refs can be flakey, especially if they point to another document. I'd open the cross-refs panel and see if you need to recreate a bunch of links.
