  • Speakers Rated at 100W at 8Ohms, Receiver 120W per Channel Question

I've read up on the latest midrange AV receivers and I've narrowed it down to two with a preference for one more than the other.
My preference is the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K since it is very highly rated in terms of overall sound and video output to the TV.  The only drawback is that it is rated at 120W per channel.  The older Onkyo speakers that I have and would like to continue to use are only rated at 100W max power at 8Ohms.
Currently my second choice would be Onkyo's TX SR607 received decent reviews.  It is only rated at 90W per channel which works for my speakers, but I've read that the video output to the TV is a little lackluster.
    My question are:
    1.  Will I be blowing out speakers if I choose the Pioneer?
    2.  If you answered "yes" to number 1, does this happen under normal listening volumes or would I have to "turn it up to 11" in order to damage my underrated speakers?
I generally keep my volume level's down since I live in a townhouse community and I want my neighbors to like me.
Thanks, any input would be helpful.
    Mike

You could possible blow them but you would have to turn them up pretty loud to start pushing 120W through them.  The rated power is a little misleading, it may do 120watts but thats usually in 2 channel mode and rarely will go that high in full surround.  Most surround sound recievers at 75watts or higher will do just fine.  As for the SR607 it is quite a nice reciever for more info:

  • Using Airport Express to listen DVD via Front Row and Optical Out

I want to find out if this is possible:
I currently have Macbook Black Core 2 Duo. I enjoy watching DVDs using Front Row. The DVI video cable goes to the projector which is at the back of my room. Since the Macbook is close to the projector, I have to run optical audio cable to the 5.1 Dolby Digital home theater sound system at the front of my room.
I am interested in the AirPort Express because it can play iTunes wirelessly and use optical output to hook up the stereo system.
The question I want to know is if it's possible to connect Airport Express optical output into my Dobly Digital sound system so I can watch and listen DVD movies via Front Row? If not, any other alternatives? When searching through topics, it seems the users said Rogue Amoeba has a lag issue. Even I am not sure it can do optical output capabilites. Any thoughts. Thanks!

KonradL, Welcome to the discussion area!
To stream non-iTunes music to the AirPort Express (AX) you need Airfoil.

  • Dolby Digital Settings

With my system, if Dolby Digital is set to "On" in settings, I don't get any sound at all from Rented or Purchased movies from iTunes - however, I do get sound from Netflix, Youtube, iTunes music, etc.
Sound works in iTunes material if Dolby Digital is set to "Off" or "Auto."
I'm worried, however, that if a Movie is Streaming with Dolby Digital, the sound should be working when the Audio Setting is "On."  Am I just getting stereo audio if the Dolby Digital setting is "Auto?"
Currently I am only running the HDMI Cable to the TV - no Optical Audio out or anything.
    John

I think it's probably similar to my issue here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17926593#17926593
Rentals generally have either 1 or 2 audio tracks.
The first is stereo (occasionally mono), the second is the dolby digital surround.
I connect to the TV via HDMI and to the surround processor via optical.
In the past I'm sure I've managed to have sound from the TV (HDMI) or surround processor (optical Dolby Digital simultaneously).
I think what currently happens is this:
AppleTV 'talks' to the HDMI device and ascertains what it can support.  Most TVs will not be able to decode Dolby Digital over HDMI.  Receivers/amps with DD capability will.
So when the TV is connected via HDMI, and DD is set to off or Auto the TV gets the stereo feed (Auto selecting stereo as TV can't handle DD).
If however DD is set to On this forces DD through HDMI but the TV doesn't know what to do with it.
So in my situation I can either have it set for stereo audio over HDMI (Off or Auto) and optical, or DD over both (DD set to On.
Clearly I want the stereo track to go to the TV over HDMI and DD over optical (falling back to stereo if no DD track) so I don't have to fiddle in Settings each time I choose to listen through TV vs surround system.

  • Does the digital optical input recognise Dolby Digital?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help clarify something for me. I have an Astro Gaming A30 Audio System that I use when playing my PS3. It's a gaming headset with pinpoint-accurate 7.1 Dolby and Dolby Headphone surround sound. Here's a link to the web page if you want to know more about it - http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/80/A30-Audio-System/.
Now, at the moment I have the PS3 connected directly to the A30 Audio System with a digital optical cable. In the PS3 settings, I have it set to output Dolby Digital 5.1 as this is the format that the A30 Audio System uses. This setting is important because it's what gives me the surround sound in my headphones. Ok, we're almost at my question...
Recently, I've been thinking of buying a capture card so I can record my game plays and upload them to YouTube. The capture card that I'm thinking of getting is the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro. Here's a link to the web page - http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/.
My question is - since there is no output on the A30 Audio System, and therefore no way to route the sound into my Mac from it, I need to first send the sound from the PS3 into the Mac (for recording) and then re-send the sound from the Mac into the Astro A30s (for listening). If I do this, will I lose the Dolby Digital format that was originally output from the PS3? I don't mind recording the audio in stereo, but it's essential that the Dolby Digital sound goes to the Astro A30s. Otherwise I won't have proper surround sound. And if you went to the website, you would have noticed that they're pretty expensive. So playing in surround sound is very important to me, as I paid top dollar for them.
Anyway, if you can clarify that for me it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Sure there's a difference it depends completely on the original sample rate of the audio recorded otherwise the best built in audio can do is 48/24, so trying to go out at 96 will force resampling[without a capable app running]. But in terms of resampling, if you use the card then you should be able to use 96/32.
Have you properly adjusted AMS settings; so that the card is in Properties at 96? Still the only governing factor there is whatever software governs the PCI card. I don't get the problem you're having here, what is the connection to the machine, optical?

  • A small logo of Dolby Digital or DVD-Audio missing when play DVD-A or DVD software with SPDIF

I can see these logo before when I play DVD-A or play DVD movies with SPDIF enabled on DVD software such as PowerDVD. And now it's gone, when play SPDIF, it does not show these logos at all.
    I appreciate any advises.
    Thanks

for the logos, someone asked how to know what kind of signal his card was decoding. I provided 2 examples:
    http://shingoyab.free.fr/creative/dolby.jpg
    http://shingoyab.free.fr/creative/dts.jpg
if you don't see them but hear correct surround sound, don't bother. On some situation (not determined which one though) the logo disapears. I lost them some rare times. Last times was when listening to some DD music when programming small homeworks in OpenGL.

  • Dolby headphones icon , Belle FP1 - WHEN IS IT ON/...

After updating to Feature pack 1 , there is an option to turn dolby digital plus . It comes in the form of an icon when listening to something with headphone connected.
The icon is bright and when clicked it turns darker, but I dont seem to understand which of those 2 situations means off and which means on.
Is it on when the icon is bright (meaning, the bright color means "it's curreny on")
    OR
Is it on when the icon is dark (meaning, the bright color means "if you click it, it will be on")
it's very unclear to me and for no good reason. Symbian is a good OS, unlike other phones, in Nokia Belle, holding on an icon brings up the icon description - what it's supposed to do and solve these kind of misunderstandings. But in this case, holding the Dolby Headphones icon just brings up the words "Dolby Headphone", in both cases: Holding the icon when it's bright, and also after clicking icon, meaning, when holding icon when it's dark.
Do you understand my intention? There is a dilemma here, on a broader scale it's because it's unclead if the shape of a button (for example, being bright) means it's what the status is currently now, or if the shape of a button is the action, meaning what the status WILL BE after clicking.
For example, the PAUSE button is an icon that shows what WILL BE after clicking . So I want to assume that it's the same with dolby, bright color means "click me and i will turn on." But it could also mean " I am on, click me to turn off ".
Hope Nokia would be smart to update that icon's description to be "Turn Dolby Headphone on" and "Turn Dolby Headphone off". This would clear confusion.
    Thanks for you help .

ok thank you very much, if a mod sees this and approves this answer - please lock it. (So if  you're a curious reader from google and this thread is locked, the answer is above my post )

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 Dolby Audio Decode Licensing Restriction

I have a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro. They are both running Premiere Pro CS6 v6.0.2. On my Macbook Pro, I started a project using AVCHD media in the form of .mts files. I believe these files have Dolby Digital Audio. I have project managed all of the files onto my external harddrive for editing on my Mac Pro; however, as I open the project file I recieve an error message "This installation does not have a license to decode Dolby Digital audio". If I then open a different project and check the error log, I see the error "Dolby Audio Decode Licensing Restriction on file..."
Sometimes when opening the project I also get an error "There is no Preset for this sequence..." or something similar. I cannot rememeber exactly.
I have the exact same plugins on both my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro. They are running the same version and they are both activated on my Creative Cloud membership. Any thoughts on why I can't open the project on my Mac Pro?

In short after reading LOTS of people complaining like you have, like I have like probably about 1 million people who own AVCHD cameras have that the most used format to shoot on for home /semi pro users is AVCHD and Premiere... get ready for this... take a deep breath.... DOESNT SUPPORT ITS AUDIO FILES. Its apparently licensed by DOLBY and you ahve to contact and minktonka company and pay.... really sit down first... take another deep breath... they want $300 for the plugin to make it work.
So Adobe have shafted.... is that a polite enough word... its customers who just want to play their files - not even encode the project to dolby digital - just play and edit their stuff. No even though you own that camera which only lets you shoot in that format and even though you are stuck wanting Premiere, adobe thinks that for the large monthly sum the world can go sit on its finger before they will sort this out.
    Charming huh.
Adobe are you listening..... hello Adobe... have you gone mad Adobe... hello. Earth calling Adobe.
As someone pointed out you can play these files on quicktime, media player... so seems apple and microsoft PAY THEIR LICENCES ON BEHALF OF THE USERS OF THEIR PRODUCTS. Adobe must either be skinflints or maybe a nephew of theirs owns Minkytonkatoy firm who are selling that annoying plugin. Ever heard of download sites... cough cough.

  • How do I get Dolby digital live or DTS connect to work?

I have the sound blaster Zx sound card and the logitech z906 5.1 surround speaker system. I am connecting to the speakers via optical cable. I figured Dolby digital live and/or DTS would sound great with this set up, only problem when I turn on either of those my speakers go silent. I set Speakers: Soundblaster Z as my default playback device but other than that I am not sure what I need to do to get it to work.
    Bruce

I have the z 906 speakers, not the Z-5500 in your link. The manual I already have says the z906 speakers automatically detect the digital signal. I figured the Sound Blaster card would convert an analog signal to digital since it is going into the speakers through the Optical cable, I guess I was wrong.
I have read the link about digital connections on these forums along with the notice in the cinematic tab in the Sound Blaster control panel. I believe they are both saying that I will not be able to use my music player (windows media player) in conjunction with the Dolby DTS and Dolby Digital Live, is this true?
If so then is the only way to listen to the DTS or digital Live effects is through a DVD or Blu ray disc encoded for either of those effects?
If this is true how do I test my dolby digital outputs to make sure they are working correctly?

  • Dolby 5.1 and iMac

Has anyone found a good way to access 5.1? I was intrigued by Tritton AXPro headset which claims to have optical input and to be compatible with Mac. Has anyone tried this? and yes @ $159-$179 it is not a cheap solution,

More information. I have been able to connect the product (without too much difficulty) to the digital / optical output of my i5 and can now listen to commercial DVDs (movies) with Dolby 5.1. The next trick will be to hook up my old PC analog 5.1 speakers (Logistic X540) The bottom line is as long as the i5 receives Dolby 5.1 and it passes through, I can hear it. Currently i am using the DVD player app as my principle player. I will now try to see how Quick Time and iTunes respond.

  • Trouble using Creative Audigy 2 ZS Video editor with an external Dolby / DTS Deco

I had purchased a Creative Audigy 2 ZS Video editor for following two requirements,
I wanted to be able to Digitize video from almost any source.<
And I also wanted to have an external Audio Card that I could share between my Home Desktop / Laptop and let Digital Audio Signal get to my Yamaha Reciever that powers a Bose Home Theater Speaker System.<
    My typical connection setup is,
Desktop / Laptop >> USB 2.0 Shielded Cable >> Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor >> Optical Out >> LC Optical Cable >> DVD Optical In of Yamaha reciever
I do not have WinDVD or any other program that can allow SPDIF in Pass Through Mode, so I use VLC as my media player. While playing DVD / other DivX / XVid videos with Dolby / DTS / AC3 audio track I get the option of setting the audio to SPDIF Pass through Mode and that's how I use it.
It had been working fine for a while (6 months) and then I was not using the card for a while (been busy at work). And since then I'm not able to use this in SPDIF Pass Through Mode any more.
Each time I select that mode in VLC the player kinda freezes and plays Media File with breaks, making it just un-usable. In case I leave the player audio option to Stereo output?mode it works fine, but I do get only Analogue Audio deli'vered to the External Recei'ver and to say the least, after listening to DTS / Dolby audio this simply doesn't cut it.
I've already updated the latest drivers from Creative Site, have tried the card with two different Dell Laptops (D820 and D80) and my home desktop. It gives exactly same result in all cases.
I've not tested DTS Decoding output from the Device itself, 'cause I don't have sufficient cables to take decoded output from the device and send that to the receiver. But in case I opt that option in VLC player The player keeps playing Video without any issues. I can't validate if it's decoding correctly or not, 'cause I don't have cables to connect all that outputs to the receiver.
Can my problem be related to anything on the Optical connection cable itself?
If someone could shade some light on this issue that would be really helpful.

    Hello,
I have the exact same problem and would very much like to know if there are 64bit drivers available.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Sound Blaster able to encode Dolby Digital 5.1 and abo

    Hi there.
I recently buy a new motherboard without dolby digital encoding onboard (the older, nForce2 (asus a7n8x deluxe had that capability, the new one, doesnt, it is an asus a8n-sli premium)
I use the coaxial digital out to connect my computer to the home theatre with only one cable (that rules), also, enabling "cloning" allow me to listen using at least 4 speakers, instead of the two front ones.
Someone told me to buying a "cheap" sound blaster will do the trick.
My options are (from cheap to expensi've):
    CREATIVE AUDIGY SE SB0570 OEM
    CREATIVE AUDIGY SE SB0570 BOX
    CREATIVE AUDIGY2 VALUE
    CREATIVE S.BLASTER X-FI PLATINUM
    CREATIVE S.BLASTER X-FI XTREME
For me, the best option is the SB0570 BOX. The Audigy2 VALUE have 2.5 times the price of it.
    What do you recommend?
    Thanks in advance!

Analog to Digital Conversion is exactly that: It translates the Analog input signal of eg. a microphone into a PCM digital signal, with 24-bit precision. That is essentially the Line-IN and the Microphone input. (Although for the microphone they tend to have lower precision but amplify the signal).
There is a sticky at the top of this forum which you should read to understand the difference between the various digital formats.
To make it clear: The Sound Blasters have an SPDIF output which can send digital signals. However it does not have a Dolby Digital compression engine, so it will either send uncompressed PCM signals if it has processed them before. If you have a source that is already in Dolby Digital then you can redirect it through the SPDIF output and get full surround sound. This ONLY happens on DVDs, because they come precompressed.
Everything that gets processed on the soundcard is outputted as PCM digital: For 6-channel audio there are 3 connections which end up on 3 DACs (Digital to Analog Converter) where the digital signal is then made into analog for the speakers to be able to play it. The SPDIF connection simply bypasses the DACs (the DACs of the receiver are used) but takes only connection, that of the front speakers.
Dolby Digital AC-3 is a compression mechanism, which compresses sound (much like mp3), so that it can fit in only one connection, where uncompressed only a stereo signal would pass. (In doing so, it also lowers quality!)
So: If you want to use a 7. speaker system with a Sound Blaster you have to go analog, which also means 3 cables (because they have 3 wires for the channels + ground). And I don't think Dolby or DTS supports more than 5. channels for the time being, so not even with Dolby Encoding onboard could you do it with one cable.

  • No sound with iTunes HD TV Show with Dolby surround

I bought my first HD Tv Show in the iTunes store. 24 season 7 episode 1 if it matters. When I play the show in iTunes and select the Dolby track, I get no sound at all. If I select the stereo track, I get stereo sound. But that's obviously not what I want.
My setup: a MacMini with the optical-out connection to a home theater amp.
If I listen to a .avi file with AC3 audio in QuickTime or FrontRow, with the help of the Perian plugin, it works fine with the Dolby surround sound. So it's an issue specific to iTunes HD content.
I tried uninstalling this Perian plugin, I played with the settings in the "Audio Midi setup", nothing helps, I still get no sound with the iTunes TV show.
Is there something wrong on my computer or it is a known issue?

I've got the same issue. DVD Player and Perian/VLC are able to output 5.1 over an optical cord to my receiver for DVDs and other files, but not for iTunes HD downloads (neither iTunes nor QuickTime can do this, even with Perian.)

  • Dolby Digital Live

Currently there are very few solutions for those of us that want true digital surround audio in our games. It's sad to say but the best in gaming audio usually comes from console systems because they are typically hooked up to home entertainment systems with spdif digital outs. So just like when you listen to a movie in Dolby Digital 5.1, you get great sound.
Now in the PC world, most games either don't support Dolby, or use some other forms of analog surround.
Dolby came up with a solution, which more games are starting to support. They call it Dolby Digital Live, it's basically a way for computer gamers to get true digital surround audio via a spdif output. The catch is, you have to have a sound card or motherboard which includes Dolby Digital Live.
From the research I've done, it seems the Mac Pros include what Intel calls their High Definition Audio solution, which on most chipsets is also known to include Dolby Digital Live, in this case the ACL880 chipset provided by Realtek should contain DDL.
My question is for those with their Mac Pros, spdif speakers, and XP installed. As mine is still on order, I'd like to find out if this is working. You would need to have a set of 5.1 speakers attached via the optical out of the Pro, and using the correct Realtek drivers under XP, run a game tagged with the Dolby Digital logo, such as Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.
So basically if it works, you should be getting 5.1 surround and some really nice audio.

    Hello Zacabeb,
I understand you are wondering if you can use the Dolby Digital Live on your HP Pavilion 500-205eo Desktop PC. According to the HP Pavilion 500-205eo Desktop PC Product Specifications your audio is the Integrated IDT 92HD73E Audio. I am providing you with the 92HD73E Datasheet, which on page 2 lists Dolby Digital Live™ (DDL) as supported. This being said to enable the Dolby Digital Live in Windows 8.1 I would advise you to ensure you that have downloaded and installed the IDT High Definition Audio Driver.
Please re-post if you require additional support. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Aspire V3-572 dolby digital plus stopped working

Description of the issue: Dolby digital plus is no longer working as it used to.  Description of actions:I had two chrome windows open, and I was watching a show in one. I paused it to watch something in the other window, and when I went back to the show, the sound was back to the low quality heard when dolby isn't on. I pulled up dolby, and saw it was on. However, the equalizer scales weren't moving to the audio, and the sound quality was still poor. Upon further listening, there is a minute change when dolby is turned on, but it's not the incredible difference I'd been experiencing earlier.   What I've done to muddle through the issue:-Restarted the PC, hoping the switch between browser windows had confused dolby. No luck there.-Checked Windows update to see if a driver or update had gone through recently-nothing.-Looked at the the drivers. Seems there's only one speaker driver, RealTek High Definition Audio, ver. 6.0.1.7300. It dates back to July, which I'm assuming is when the laptop was packaged. Weirdly, that's also the latest update from Acer, though Acer lists it as being updated November. Muh laptop:Aspire V3-572-51TR, purchased a month ago, most non-critical Windows updates ignored, not much else done to it. Edit: Now it's working on some things but not others.

Hi... It seems to be something with the audio driver. The dolby software is included in the factory shipped audio driver. In order t o fix this issue, you may try reinstalling the audio driver on the laptop. Here are the steps: Press and hold the Windows key and then press the C key to open Charms.Click on Search and type "Recovery".Click on 'Acer Recovery Management'.Select Reinstall Drivers or Applications.Select Content and choose the audio codec and proceed to install it. In case you are unable to install this driver, you may go to Device Manager and open "Audio, video and game controllers" and uninstall the current audio driver. Then follow the above steps to install the audio driver. It will work..
