Listen to a track while recording another

How do I record on a track while monitoring another track in the same project to ensure that my current recording aligns with the other track?
Thanks!

that should be automatic, it's how GB works, unless you actively Mute the other track (or solo the one on which you are recordig)

  • How to view score of one track while recording another.

I want to record audio on one track. I want to read the notes and chords from another track while recording. ( I want to use the previously recorded track only for providing me with the score ) I would very much prefer to have Logic chase the score so that I know where I am in the arrangement while recording.
I am aware I can print out the score as a a pdf file and view that, and its not so bad, however I would prefer Logic to follow along the score and let the playhead indicate the location.
I can do this when not recording. I can view the previous track just before I go into recording, but when I go into recording, the score switches to showing currently track being recorded ( which is empty)

    Hi there,
Floating Windows all but disappeared with Logic 8 and many of us mourn their passing. Although some windows are, by default, floating (eg transport), the only one that you can choose to make float nowadays is the Environment, useful if you're setting up faders or some other real-time control.

What's your setup? Normally you hear all  tracks (that are not muted) in your headphones while you record a new one.

  • Split Tracks While Recording w/MediaSource Play

I'm converting some cassettes using MediaSource Player. Can I split tracks while recording, i.e. record the whole cassette and then split that into individual tracks? I've done that with Microsoft Plus!, but can't seem to find that functionality with MediaSource. Also--if I want the absolute best quality recording of the cassettes, am I right in thinking I'd select WAV stereo, w/96.00 kHZ and 24 bits? The cassettes are li've recordings that I'd like to?have professionally mixed in a studio and then released as CD's, so I need the optimal "starting point" as far as the digital files are concerned. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, recording at 24/96 wave is the best that you can go with.
If you have one of the Creative sound cards, check whether you have the Creative Smart Recorder application. It has a split track function.

  • Recording to one track while playing another

Is it possible to record to one track while listening to playback from another? I have tried and the sound from the playback track seems to be full of static while recording but clears up once the recording functions is turned off. Any ideas? BTW....I am using the M-Audio Firewire410 as my interface.

It's possible. Make sure your interface is set for the same sample rate/bit depth as your STP project. A mismatch can cause ugly stuff like that.

  • Listen to YouTube app while using another app

I just got my ipad2. I'm still learning about it, but when I am playing music on the YouTube app, and try to use another app, the music goes off. I thought this thing was meant to dominate in the field of multitasking. Another issue, I can't find ANY official videos of songs on the YouTube app. Please help!!! Thanks!!

There are a number of music streaming apps that support running in the background along with the iPod Music app. This is not supported with the YouTube app which is a video app.
Doubtful there are many if any official videos of songs on YouTube due to licensing issues. If so, they won't be available long. What you search for and find is it.

  • While recording a guitar do not record the output from other tracks

    Hi all,
I'm an audition/recording newbie. I have Audition CC. I have recorded one guitar track. and now I'd like to record another one. The problem is that when I try to record it the output from the other one gets recorded as well. I do want to hear the output from the first track while recording track 2 but I want only to record my guitar playing in track 2.
    Thank you.

The basic problem here is not actually caused by Audition, but by your sound device mixer, which appears to be letting you record everything you hear - so that will be the guitar part you are playing, and also the replayed tracks that you've already recorded. In Windows, the fix for this is generally to make sure that the recording source is set to be just the input you are using, and not 'what you hear' or whatever it is on your device. The playback part of the mixer should let you monitor both the wav playback and your source, which is what you need to be doing - it's only the record settings you need to look at.
If you are using a Mac though, I can't help you because I don't know anything about how they work from that POV, but I'd imagine that it must be similar.

  • Listening While Recording Help?

Hi, I have been useing GarageBand for a while now and have been recording acoustic guitar through both real instrument and electric setting. Now that I'm confident in the program and my musical talent, I want to up the bar a bit by getting a better recourding. The major problem is I would like to listen to myself play while recording. Not being able to hear the effects while playing kinda eliminates the use of them.
Recording is not a prob, but I get all this noise and I can't figure out how to eliminate it. Especially when I use the preloaded amps and stompbox. Its almost like feedback but not really. I can only explain it as white noise, like the amps are turned up to loud or something.
My original setup consisted of acoustic recorded via usb webcam mic into GB. As I said this was sufficant until now.
Things I have done to eliminmate the noise issue:
    * Bought a real microphone connected via built in input cause I thought the webcam mic was either to crappy or to sensitive. *Did Not Work*
*Bought an M-Audio FastTrack connected via USB.
Mic/M-Audio/Mac. Sound not quite as bad but can not hear myself play via headphone jack on M-Audio *Did Not Work*
*Played around with different volume levels on anything I could find dealing with volume. *Did Not Work*
*Various other things *Did Not Work*
How can I eliminate the noise, get a clean recording while at the same time being able to listen and hear effects as I play?

If your able to record through the audio interface, you probably need to turn the monitor on and use the headphones through your computer not the interface. Thats how i do it at least.

  • Cant hear song playback while recording with external USB Interface Mic in Garageband

    Hi there
There must be something wrong with my settings in Gargaeband/Mac Sound Settings.
I have Garageband 9 (V5.1) running a song I have already recorded using a USB keyboard.
I want to record using my external mic and my USB Audio Interface, so
I select New Track> Real Instrument
I plug in my Yamaha Audiogram 3 USB AUdio Interface and I get a pop up stating
"Garageband is scanning your system for audio devices, and has detected a device named "USB Audio Codec"
If you want to use this device do not disconnect it during the scanning process.
Do you want to use this devise No/Yes."
I select Yes and INPUT SOURCE changes from
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
    to
    Mono 1 (USB Audio CODEC)
I can see the signal lights lighting up on the audiogram 3 when I talk into the mic, so theres no problem there.
Also when I hit record I can record audio using the mic, and can see the levels (and the audio wave I am creating being drawn on the screen) but I cannot hear the track itself when I am recording using the mic. Nor can I hear the track or the new mic recorded audio AFTER I have hit stop.
The only way to hear the song again with the newly recorded mic track is to unplug the Audiogram 3 (Then I get another Pop-up stating
"The audio device "USB Audio CODEC" has been disconnected!
Do you want to switch to Built-in Audio or quit Garageband?"
    I select USE BUILT-IN AUDIO)
Then the input source changes back to
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
And I can hear the track again.
So my problem as you can see if that I cant hear the track while recording using the microphone with the Audiogram 3.
But I can record video with audio using the audiogram 3 USB Audio Inteface and mic using photobooth when I select change Sound>Input to USB Audio Codec in system preferences
It therefore assume it must be a problem with the internal audio settings of the mac/garageband.
    Can anyone advise?
    thanks!

In order to hear yourself while you are recording, you need to set Monitor to "ON" under the Track Info panel.
Also, what are your sound output settings?  It sounds like you haven't selected the right output source.
If your speakers or headphones are plugged into your audio interface, then you need to go into Preferences -> Audio/MIDI and select your audio interface under Output as well as Input.  If your speakers or headphones are built-in or plugged directly into your computer, then you need to select Built-In under Output.
I have a sneaky feeling that you are in the latter scenario, and that when you plug in your audio interface Garageband is automatically switching both Input and Output over to your interface, which means no sound output as long as the interface is plugged in.

  • Multi Track Video Recording

Here is what I am trying to do - someone please tell me if Final Cut Express can do this because I am trying to decide whether to purchase..
I am a musician and would like to record (audio & video) in a 4 way split screen format. The idea would be to record the guitar part, then watch the first track while recording a 2nd, watch the 1st and 2nd while recording a third, and so on. The trick would be to sync the audio and video together.
Can I capture and do all that within FCE?
If not - anyone have any insights on how to do this on a mac?
    Thanks!!!

    Hello
If you have overheating problem the best thing you can do is to clean up the unit and remove dust. I have had similar situation on my P20. After cleaning the unit was much quieter and cooling fan was running slowly and not on maximum speed.
While scanning runs the CPU and HDD are under pressure and produce more warmness. Without properly cleaning the temperature grows up and when the limit is reached the unit simply shuts off. Clean the unit properly. You can also try to place the unit on higher position (4 books to have 3 or 3 cm distance between notebook and the desk).
Using more RAM is very good idea. You will see that notebook performance to handle with many operations at the same time will be much better. It is really good investment.

  • Output Plug-In Effects without Recording (While Recording!)??

I am using Logic as sort of a MainStage/Logic hybrid: I am recording live performances on multiple tracks (using a Tascam M-164UF mixing board with multiple outs via USB 2.0). At the same time, I am routing plug-in effects (such as delay) through a MOTU Ultralite on Firewire bus back into the mixing console.
This all works splendidly. However, I do not want to record any audio on channel strip tracks that I am only using for effects; I just want to software monitor. For example, I am sending an AUX output from the Tascam board into an audio track containing a delay plug-in, than routing its output via the Ultralite into a channel on the Tascam. But I don't want to record on this track while recording other tracks.
Hope this makes sense. Any ideas for a simple effective way to achieve this?

I think I answered my own question. The "I" button (input monitoring) button seems to achieve this. If anyone has any other hints regarding this or a better method, it would be appreciated. In the meantime, I will read more about the input monitoring button, and will mark this as answered.
