Listener problems: TNS-12500, TNS-12560, TNS-00530

Dear All,
On a laptop (name: aspire3000, 1G RAM, 2GHz, Windows XP) I have installed Oracle 9i release 2 database (name=HOMEDB, sid=SIDHOMEDB). I "played" for a while trying to configure Oracle Shared Server but I think I've ruined the listener.
I execute the following steps:
1. start the PC
2. start the listener and database services in Control Panel (because they are set on manual)
3. in order to test the listener is functioning properly I execute:
lsnrctl> stop
lsnrctl> start
the listener starts, everything is ok
4. using sqlplus connected as sysadmin
4.1. sql> shutdown
it shuts down the database
4.2. sql> startup
Now, I receive:
ORA-12500: TNS: listener failed to start a dedicated server process
I check the sqlnet.log file:
Fatal NI connect error 12638, connecting to:
(DESCRIPTION=(LOCAL=YES)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq)))

In the listener.log I see:

TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error

My listener.ora looks like this:

TRACE_LEVEL_LISTENER = ADMIN
What's wrong?
If I shut down the PC, restart the PC, restart Oracle services (listener and db) I can connect using sqlplus. If I shutdown down the database it won't restart.
Thank you very much for the help!

hi,
take another look at your listener.ora file, esp this line:
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = HOST = aspire3000)(PORT = 1521))
... perhaps a typo.
here is my file:

  • TNS-12500, -12560 caused by Windows error 'no such file'?

I recently recovered our 9i database. I was initially able to log in via sql and the enterprise manager. However after a restart I can no longer do so, with error messages relating to the listener. The tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files all have the same entry for HOST, although in the files below I see several values, I don't know if this is related to this problem. I also notice that the status for our database is listed as 'unknown'. When I was initially able to log in via enterprise manager it also reported the same thing. I am able to tnsping our SID. The path listed below in the listener log (D:\oracle\ora90\bin\sqlplus.exe) does exist. Any ideas? Thanks!
    From listener log:

This is the only database on this machine. That being said, this is a reinstallation of Oracle on a machine that had some damage, so it's possible there are remnants that may be causing trouble. However I did a very clean deinstall of Oracle (down to manually clearing out the registry).
Looking at the link you provided, I ran into trouble at this point:
"...c:/oracle/ora09/bin/ and execute agntsrvc executabe. It should not throw any error."
However it did: startservicectrldispatcher failed with err 1063.
I'm guessing that I need to set up some other aspects of this database to get windows to launch it properly.

  • TNS-12500 & TNS-12560 on Oracle 9i - 9.2.0.1.0

    Hi,
We have an old Oracle9i db server.
One instance is called TEST. About two weeks ago, we started having problems with the test instance. It's been up and running smoothly for almost 10 years. No changes that I know of has been made.
We get TNS-12500 & TNS-12560 amongst others in the listener.log when we try to connect to TEST.
We frequently get this in the listener.log:
    21-MAR-2010 02:00:26 * service_died * TEST * 12537
    21-MAR-2010 02:00:36 * service_register * TEST * 0
However, since the problem first occured, the "service_register" does not follow the "service_died" in the log file.
    tnsping works fine:

The other instances on the server works fine.
If I restart the server it works fine for a couple of days.
    Where should I begin?
I'm not really into doing something that could interrupt the status of the production instance on the server before the weekend, but at the same time I would need the test instance up and running right now. I also would like to know what would happen if I was to restart the listener (we have one listener for all instances). Would all active connections to the production instance be affected?

In addition to the other comments you've received, please note that tnsping actually says nothing about the state of any db instance. It only goes so far as to verify there is a listener on the specified port at the specified host.

    Unable to start listener service.
Running Oracle Database 11gr2 on Windows 7.
I just installed Oracle with the "install software only" option.
Already set up the instance, the database, the dictionary views, etc.
Created tsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora as shown below.
Before installing Oracle I followed the instruction on Oracle
documentation to install a Loopback Adapter.
It is set up as the primary adapter as indicated on the
instructions. The name is "gabylan" (previously the computer
name was "P4". I set up the "hosts" file as indicated, the oracle_hostname
variable, etc. as you will see below. I don't know if it's important to "uncomment"
the line on the "hosts" file for the "localhost" entry, I left it

    Hi,
a different point: make sure the (host = ) part of your ADDRESS_LIST is correct, it seems the listener tries to bind to a host/port combination that does not exist. Don't use localhost there or nobody will be able to connect to the database which is probably not what you what.
    Regards,
    Martin

  • TNS Listener Problem in 8.1.6

    Hi,
While trying to connect to Oracle 8.1.6 , installed on local machine (OS Windows NT 4.0), using Oracle's thin JDBC drivers I get the following error :
TNS-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process
    TNS-12537: TNS:connection closed
My database is running in dedicated mode on the same PC where I am executing this JAVA program.
Any pointer. Any Help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    King.

According to Oracle Error Message, action for TNS-12500 is that Check the Listener.ORA is properly been set with the Oracle Environment if not make it and stop and start the Oracle and Listener too. If we faced and we did the above and it was working perfect.

    Hi,
Did you check whether the windows service for listener is up and running? if not please start it, by typing "services.msc" in run window and start the service. Then check whether you have listener.ora file in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin and also post listener.ora contents.
    Regards,

Oracle is a bit touchy with tnsnames.ora spelling. I copied your entry, just changing names :

    Did you try copying 9iDS SQLNET.ORA and TNSNAMES.ORA to 6i Home ?

  • TNS Error: ORA-12541: TNS: no listener.

I have installed Oracle 9i on machine in Windows XP. When I try to open the database SID in the Enterprise Manager, it gives me TNS Error: ORA-12541: TNS: no listener.
I have checked the Oracle Net Configuration:
    Protocol: TCP/IP
    Host: PNR18
    Port: 1521
In the xp administrative tools, I found that the listener is on start.
When I try to test trough ' Net Configration Assistant' getting same error, similarly with Net Manager.
I don't know if I am using the correct protocol in my case of standalone installation.
Any advice/correction? it would be appreciated. I am giving all the information of TNSNAMES.ORA, LISTENER.ORA, SQLNET.ORA, which is on my machine.
    Thanks in advance.

First of all Thanks for suggestions for solutions but still SAME PROBLEM:
    Case-1::
I tried according to your suggestion, still SAME error !! I have also configured new DB
with Enterprise MAnager Configuration Assistent - during DB creation same error occured.
    1) I have seen in XP service where all listener is running as well as OracleServiceORCL
    is also running.
    2) OracleOraHome90TNSListener also running with other listeners!
    Case-2::
Dear I also delete listener and create new one and also configured Database Description
and tried to do so but still same problem while I am TESTing it with - Net Manager /
Net Configuration Assistant. I have also tried
C:\TNSPING ORCL - it is giving 'ok' result
but when I am using C:\LSNRCTL START listener - it gives me following errors.
    Service OracleOraHome90TNSListener already running.

    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
