Listening to live radio broadcasts

As I have been sitting at my IMac (purchased April 09) day in and day out over the past weeks, I thought it would be good to listen to radio live broadcasts. To my surprise - or not - I find that apart from BBC iPlayer programmes nothing else is useable. (I have tried a wide variety of on-line channels). I seem to have this big machine, supposedly all singing and all dancing, yet can't listen to the radio. I just get the download box come up and a window full of script.
So answer is - how do I listen to live broadcasts using my mac and why isn't this ability written into the OS.
Thanks
Ann

how do I listen to live broadcasts using my mac and why isn't this ability written into the OS.
It's not "written into the OS" because a Mac does not have a radio receiver. If you are referring to streaming broadcasts that come over the Internet, that capability is dependent on the web browser, not the OS. And as mentioned above, iTunes also has the capability to stream Internet-based "radio."
You can also go to any number of web sites that stream "radio" broadcasts. Just do a Google search on "internet radio". For example, here is a web site that aggregates such streams.

You buy one and only one download.
It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
Certainly you did not update your ipod without making sure that you had transferred anything purchased on the ipod to your computer and included it in your regular backup copy of your computer.

  • Using iPad to listen to live radio

Does anyone know why I can't listen to live radio on the BBC website from iPad2? Everytime I touch listen live for a particular BBC radio channel I am directed to BBC iPlayer where I can only listen to radio programmes that have finished. Very frustrating!
    Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
    Patrick

The BBC iPlayer app lets you listen to live content - just select the Radio button at the bottom of the app, and then select Stations at the top and you should be able to select one of the BBC's national channels for live listening. It doesn't have local/regional channels - but apps such as TuneIn Radio may let you listen to them.

  • From a new ipad user: if I'm listening to live radio, how do I switch it off to move to another site without switching off the ipad?

From a new iPad user: if I'm listening to live radio, how do I switch it off to move to another site without switching off the iPad?

If you're listening to radio from the app, you need to go to that App (press Home button twice for multitasing menu and tap on its icon), and stop it there. If there is no such feature - you can "kill" the app, open multitasking menu again, hold one of the icons for couple of seconds, and click "X" symbol next to the radio app.
If the radio streams in Safari (web browser), you can simply stop it by closing the tab - tap little "X" next to the tab where the radio is playing.
    Hope this helps

  • E65 problem with listening to live radio

I have a fine wifi connection and live tv access but have problem to connect to any live radio station while connected though wifi. can anyone kindly help me out?

  • Listening to Live Radio Streams???

    Hmmmm...
This is a device has been promoted as a perfect portable internet device with iTunes, Internet, Safari, iPod, Podcasts and much more....but...
...why can't we listen to a live stream of a radio broadcast, particularly pro and college sports that are streamed on the internet that I CAN currently listen to on my Mac Powerbook...????
Why can't I listen to on my iPhone????
Am I missing something or is the PERFECT device missing something very important.

You should try searching google next time. There are NUMEROUS ways to stream live radio. You can use FlyTunes, not live but great channel selection. You can also use ORB, great service. Sign up fo ran account, link your favorite internet or radio channels, and boom all on your ipod. I use ORB and USirius t listen to my 120 plus channels of Sirius radio, as well as use ORB for WFAN Radio and ESPN....Also Accuradio, you should search google, there are numerous ways to stream

  • Can I assume that 2.0 FINALLY provides listening to live radio streams?????

Still hoping that 2.0 and/or the Apps Store will give us the ability to stream live audio on our iPhone.
Have been waiting for one year a feature that I assumed in 07 would be an automatic on the iPhone.
Why would the "perfect" device (yes I do like it) that has iPod, iTunes, Internet, Safari, Videos, Audio and much more NOT have the ability to listen to live streams of radio and in particular sports streams is really baffling.
I am praying that this feature is available in the 2.0 upgrade and/or at the Apps Store ...pls tell me it is available.

If the stream you want to listen to is using Windows Media it will probably never be available on the iPhone.
If it is using Flash then you need to go to the Adobe website and ask them to write a Flash client for the iPhone.

  • Can't listen to ABC radio broadcast -- but now I can

"Mac OS X, Tiger Edition" by David Pogue (2005) briefly discusses the issue I raised on page 649ff. Under "The Software Base Station Effect," he says that a Mac with an AirPort card and an Ethernet or other connection to the internet (e.g. via DSL or cable modem) can serve as a "gateway" for other 802.11g equipped machines.
I've ordered a D-Link DWL-G650 802.11g Wireless Cardbus Adapter to install in the Dell laptop, and will see how it goes.

  • Adobe Flash Player required for streamed internet radio broadcasts

I am not well-versed in the technical aspects of why Adobe Flash Player is not allowed on the iPad2 (and other Apple devices). But I don't
understand how "damaging" is would be to allow its use to enable an iPad2 user to listen to streamed radio broadcasts which--apparently--require Adobe Flash Player.

A quick search of the forum will give you numerous threads that explain the issue. In fact, just look at a couple in the More Like This box to the right of your post.
    Best of luck.

  • NC6000 laptop-unable to hear online live radio

I can play tv programmes through IPlayer but am unable to listen to live radio or old programmes.
I've downloaded Windows media to no avail.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Maybe someone else know of a quick fix, not me unfortunaley, it is also a while since I used 10.6.8.
At least the audio system works correctly.
    Few more questions.
Do you have any extentions in Safari preferences, such as Ad block, Flash block etc, these can stop streaming working? I cannot remember if these extentions were available for Snow Leopard.
Did you use a Proxy server in your network settings that as been disabled by the software upgrade, or have they set one up for you in network settings to use the school network?
Do use a particular station, if so what is it and I will try it on my computer. It may give some pointers to what is stopping on your computer.
and I should have asked this before, can you steam radio from other locations, say at home etc.

  • Streaming Live Radio

Can anyone tell me how to stream live radio stations on-line? I like to listen to live radio streaming on-line. When I go to radio station websites and click the listen live button nothing happens. Thanks.

When I try the station website directly it doesn't connect me when I click on the listen live icon. A window appears with unrecognizable script. The link is www.kkla.com. It's a local radio station in the Los Angeles area. Thanks.

  • HT1349 Can I use headphones to listen to Pandora radio without it being broadcast through the speakers?

I tried to listen to Pandora radio through the headphones,  without music being broadcast through  the speakers.  Have not been able to do this and want to know if it is possible and how to listen this way.

Yes, listening to Pandora through headphones is no different than listing to any other music/audio through headphones.  When you plug them in your speaker should automatically turn off.  Perhaps there is something wrong with your headphone sensor; try blowing on the opening to see if there is dust/debris getting in the way of its operation.  Sometimes plugging and unplugging your headphone jack multiple times will clear it as well.  If the problem persists take your phone to the Apple store and have them take a look at it.  It should still be under warranty.

  • Broadcasting Live Radio to local computer

I posted this in the general itunes topic, but i feel that its also fitting to be here for the context that:
I am trying to get an external input to play in itunes, one of the easiest ways i can see of doing this is broadcasting a live radio station but i havent found anything that can do this yet
Does anyone know any software that will let me broadcast radio completely live from a mic input so that itunes could pick it up?
Hey, i love itunes and i love the new visualiser, the only issue i've had with this is that itunes doesnt seem to accept any external input (eg a mic or an ipod plugged into the computer.) i know it seems like this would rarely get used, but in my case im interested in using the itunes visualizer for a live concert (we would be projecting live visualizations accross the stage)
Does anyone know if there is any way to make itunes accept an external input? (it would just be a 3.5mm (headphone) jack into the back of an either windows or mac computer (preferably windows as i only have macbooks available and i feel that a desktop would be more stable in the situation).
I've looked at a couple of other options, being broadcasting a live local radio station and having itunes pick that up, or somehow creating a live mp3 stream, but neither of these have worked so far, so if anyone has any more ideas that would be great!
    Thanks

Download and set up QuickTime Broadcaster. Note that the usage of QuickTime Streaming Server requires Mac OS X Server.
