Listening to XM and/or Sirius Radio Streams on iPhone

Hey everyone! I did a little research today, and found an easy (relatively) way to listen to XM or Sirius radio on the iPhone. First off, this is NOT a hack, and requires no installs on the iPhone. All this requires is a Windows PC (sorry, mac-users...I have a mac too, but my wife has a PC, so I used hers), an Orb account (free), Windows Media Player and a program called UXM. Again, this is not a hack, just a way for iPhone users to enjoy XM. (I do not take responsibility for anything anyone does, as the following instructions were not written by me. I have taken them from everythingiphone.com, and all rights etc. belong to them) cheers! It works well, not really ideal but its a start.
"Things you will need to get started.
1. An xm subscription
2. uXM from http://www.millardsoftware.com/
3. Orb server from orb.com
4. An iPhone
Download an install uXM (to the PC). Click the settings button and enter your email address and password you use to stream xm online.
Click start.
Download and install the orb server (again, PC). Part of the install process will help you create an orb account. Once you have uXM and orb running on your PC (I could not get this to work in parallels on my mac) go back to the orb.com on your PC and sign in/orb 2.0.
Click Open Application.
Click Audio.
Click Favorite Channels under internet radio.
Click the 'add custom' link that is on the top of the page.
Type in the xm channel name.
Double click the uXM logo in your tray (next to the clock) and click the URLS button. Choose the xm channel you want to stream from the pull down menu.
Click the clipboard button.
Return to the orb website and paste the url in the url field.
Click save.
Now get out your iPhone and go to orb.com and sign in.
Click Audio.
Click Internet Radio Favorites.
Click the channel icon for the channel you just saved.
Click play.
Click the small play arrow in the lower right corner of the QT screen.
Your stream should start. Mine seems to hung up at about 11 seconds. I just hit the back arrow and click play again and it work fine.
Wash, rinse, repeat for your other favorite xm channels."
Again, to repeat myself, this is not a hack, nor does it violate the iPhone's warranty, etc. It uses safari's quicktime plugin, that's it!
Note: For Sirius users, the UXM website millardsoftware has a Sirius application as well. Just follow the same steps, but on the sirius app. I don't have Sirius, so I don't know how well it works.

Did you try XM or Sirius? I was able to set up every XM station (except for the sports stations, they aren't available) and give it a thumbnail image like those on the XMRadio Online service. It looks really nice. Plus, with the Orb program (I had never even heard of it until today) you can store playlists of music and stream them from your computer, or listen to other internet radio stations a la the itunes radio stations. Its a lot like DotTunes, but free, so ya know...I haven't tried the other features besides the XM radio. Let me know if anyone else gets this to work. I'd like to think that, ultimately, XM or Sirius would make a Safari plugin that's a little more fancy than this, or maybe Apple will let them have a pretty little icon. Someday...

  • Going crazy!!!  trouble with flip4mac / quick time / Sirius radio streaming

ok... back in June I posted on here that I was unable to listen to Sirius streaming on the internet with my new Macbook. Thanks to somoene's advice I was able to download stuffit expander, and use Windows Media Player through Safari.
Then the other day, somehow I ended up downloading Flip4Mac since they now have the universal binary one out and ever since then I cannot get my sirius to stream anymore!!!
    I have tryed everything:
-I uninstalled flip4mac and went back to my "old way" of listening to it, and windows meadia player would open, but then do/play nothing!
-I have tried checking the box to open it with rosetta and that does not work either.
-I have tried using Rosetta with both windows media player AND flip4mac downloaded
-I have tried using Rosetta and uninstalling the windows meadia player and just using flip for mac.
    - And I have tried all of the above without using Rosetta...
Now, I have just flip4mac installed and with Rosetta or without, not it just tells me that "the url is invalid."
And it never worked well in Firefox (always says an "unknown" plug-in is missing, so I don't even bother with that, I always just used Safari)
Can anyone PLEASE help me figure out how I screwed this up, and how to get my radio back on!!!
    Thanks!!

I have been listening to Sirius online for months now - with no problems - until today. Sirius just re-did all their software and now people can pay for a subscription to Sirius online, without actually owning a radio. I believe our problem lies within all of the recent changes and updates they have made. They have also updated their FAQ page on the player, and (as of Monday) it now says:
    2. What are the hardware and software requirements for the media player?
To listen to our music channels online, we recommend a high bandwidth internet connection (T1, DSL or ISDN line, or a cable modem), Windows Media Player version 6.0 or higher, and either Netscape 7.x or Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. Unfortunately, we are unable to fully support other browsers at this time.
I wrote Customer Service and asked them if there is a work-around for all Mac users with Safari or Firefox, so we'll see what they say. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed, since my day seems to go by pretty slowly without Howard Stern =)
Please let me know if you find anything out, and I'll do the same.

  • Listen to internet radio stream on IPhone

I am broadcasting an internet radio station using NiceCast. I have links for both a Real Player and a Quicktime client for listening. How can I make my stream available to the IPhone?
The link www.jazzknob.org opens with a default link to Real Player. A click will switch to Quicktime. Can I make a third link that the IPhone will listen to? I'm quite surprised that the IPhone doesn't support Quicktime.

My e63 can play it via realplayer using
    http://www.rthk.org.hk/live3.ram
you can save as link also..
only down side is that it can't play on background.

  • Sync Radio Streaming to iPhone

So what i don't get is, if an app can do it, what is stopping iTunes from syncing our already pre-chosen radio stations in our iTunes playlists? I am 100% sure its possible for this to be in a future update, and personally i believe its a feature that would be widely used, rather than be forced to choose from the small selection in a radio app (don't get me wrong i love them nonetheless) but how about some personal choice with the ability to sync your own Streams to the iPhone and stream radio over WiFi and 3G/Edge?

You can use this link to provide Apple your feedback.

  • Stops and starts in video streaming from iphone to tv using apple tv and airplay. Both devices have latest software and are capable.

When try to stream content (specifically, videos from Acorn.com) to my TV through my apple TV from my iphone 5,The video  freezes, stops and starts continually, even though it is playing smoothly on the screen of my iphone.  both iphone, Apple TV  are capable models and have latest software updates.
    What's wrong here?

Not necessarily, but right now you don't have a stable network and there are a lot of factors that can compromise that. I didn't say ethernet was the only option, again you can get a report of your network to see the status.  Would have to change things in order to strengthen the wifi signal (i.e. router location, channel, placement of ATV etc). I am running on wireless without issue, same as most users, and if you took it to a controlled environment (like Apple) you would see similar results.

  • Do pictures that are downloaded from a camera reverse course and go to photo stream on iPhone?

I have some pictures that I did not take with my iphone but either with a canon camera or via capture on my laptop. When I put them in iphoto, they showed up in photostream on my iphone. WHY? How can I make sure that does not happen? Is there a setting I need to change?

Turn off Photo Stream in iPhoto: iPhoto>Preferences>iCloud.

  • Any way to get AM radio? More listen to AM (and XM) than FM

Most people I know listen to AM and XM satellite radio not FM.
    Can we get AM radio?
    Thanks.

Some AM radio stations are streaming over the internet. In which case, iTunes can usually play the stream.
If you are looking to listen over the radio through your computer, you could find an old AM radio with a headphone output jack and port it into the mic input. Be careful to balance the resistance and not overdrive your mic input. Of course you have little control of the radio through your computer.
Griffin makes a RadioShark2 device ($40-50) that captures AM & FM radio and ports it through a USB port. User reviews vary on how sensitive it is in capturing radio stations. The first version (white fin) may not be as sensitive as Radioshark2 (black fin). An external antenna may help with capturing signals. The RadioShark2 provides software control over what radio stations you want to listen to.
Griffin had plans to improve the RadioShark2 to include HD radio for the US market but it has yet to be released.

  • Radio streaming via a router?

Since my uncle added a router between his Tower PPC Single 1.8 and his Dell, he can no longer receive any radio streaming. Considering he is an avid international radio listener, to say that he is peeved is an understatement.
Disconnecting the router from the entire system restores radio streaming 100%. So my question is: once a router is connected, do one or several ports need to be opened somewhere to allow radio streaming?
    * Guy

    Virtual PC
Thanks for the info, it'll allow me to open the appropriate ports *IF* I can figure out a few questions.
But first, here's more on the situation:
-I thought my uncle streamed his radio servers from an Airport Base station to his AEX. Wrong. He doesn't own a Basestation. He turned his PPC into an Airport Transmitter and that was enough.
    - Here's a list of things that don't work since the router has been installed:
    * His USB Logitech microphone will not transmit on either iChat (3.0) or Skype. The 'potentiometer' visibly works in the Sound System Pref, but the mike will not operate out of his computer. However, reception from others is OK in both Skype and iChat.
    * Radio streaming via iTunes.
    * Real Player radio. (Unable to connect to the server)
    - His new router is a DI-604 by D-Link. In this link (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93333), the router is an 'acceptable' router from Apple's point of view. Now I need to know: does this router have its own firewall on by default? My uncle's PPC firewall is off and he wants to keep it that way. I don't know much about the D-Link, he threw the box and instalation manual in the garbage already. Not only is he technophobic, he also considers manuals are for wusses...
    - If I need to access the ports on the D-link, how do I do it: via the host server? Terminal? Some funky app?
    - By tomorrow morning, I'm sure I'll have more questions to ask, but hopefully someone will have answers to the above.

  • Listening to Live Radio Streams???

    Hmmmm...
This is a device has been promoted as a perfect portable internet device with iTunes, Internet, Safari, iPod, Podcasts and much more....but...
...why can't we listen to a live stream of a radio broadcast, particularly pro and college sports that are streamed on the internet that I CAN currently listen to on my Mac Powerbook...????
Why can't I listen to on my iPhone????
Am I missing something or is the PERFECT device missing something very important.

You should try searching google next time. There are NUMEROUS ways to stream live radio. You can use FlyTunes, not live but great channel selection. You can also use ORB, great service. Sign up fo ran account, link your favorite internet or radio channels, and boom all on your ipod. I use ORB and USirius t listen to my 120 plus channels of Sirius radio, as well as use ORB for WFAN Radio and ESPN....Also Accuradio, you should search google, there are numerous ways to stream

  • After I sign into my account @ Sirius Radio and select music , I want to goto another website. My connection with Sirius then is cancelled. What do I do to stay connected while surfing?

Sirius Radio advises me that I can stay connected and listen to music while I surf. But normally I can't. It's interesting to note that when I've gone to this Help page, Sirius has remained connected. I am now thoroughly confused. I will now move to another site and confirm my problem. ( or not )

  • Itunes hangs during radio streaming and has to be forced quit

Itunes plays radio streams ok for a while, but eventually the music stops. Pressing stop to restart the url doesnt work, the whole of itunes becomes frozen and unresponsive and needs to be force quit everytime.
Its very frustrating as when you restart itunes it needs to then check the whole library.
Playback is fine for all hard drive content. Happens on both ethernet and airport connection.
Cant seem to find other people having the same kind of issue.
Have reinstalled itunes several time to no avail.
    Any ideas?

I think I have the same problem and I am pretty sure I can give a recipe for replicating it: listen to any radio stream; when the stream gets interrupted for buffering (if you have multiple windows open, you probably won't notice the little dialog box popping), press the "PLAY" key on your keyboard. Voilà. iTunes hanged.
I've submitted countless bug/crash reports on OS 10.5 and OS 10.6. Something changed in Lion (10.7) in that even though iTunes still *has* to be force-quit, it doesn't count it as a crash and so there's no prompt to submit a report.
Frankly, I am kind of amazed that this years-old bug which probably affects just about everyone listening to streams is not fixed already.

  • Can I assume that 2.0 FINALLY provides listening to live radio streams?????

Still hoping that 2.0 and/or the Apps Store will give us the ability to stream live audio on our iPhone.
Have been waiting for one year a feature that I assumed in 07 would be an automatic on the iPhone.
Why would the "perfect" device (yes I do like it) that has iPod, iTunes, Internet, Safari, Videos, Audio and much more NOT have the ability to listen to live streams of radio and in particular sports streams is really baffling.
I am praying that this feature is available in the 2.0 upgrade and/or at the Apps Store ...pls tell me it is available.

If the stream you want to listen to is using Windows Media it will probably never be available on the iPhone.
If it is using Flash then you need to go to the Adobe website and ask them to write a Flash client for the iPhone.

  • When I am listening to the radio (streaming through itunes) my macbook pro will log me out, quitting all the applications I have running (often firefox, word processing, itunes, etc). Why?

When I am listening to the radio (streaming through itunes) my macbook pro will log me out, quitting all the applications I have running (often firefox, word processing, itunes, etc). Why?
It's very frustrating and I don't understand why it happens. It might happen other times, but I notice it the most when I'm streaming the radio through itunes, though I think it's also happened when I'm streaming music or shows from NPR, so I don't actually know if it's an itunes thing, or an internet thing? Or just my computer being stupid?  But how can I fix it?
    Thanks!

My best guess at this point is a problem wwith 10.5.8
It seems clear to me that sometimes, seemingly randomly, software will access the video card (flash player, quicktime, Safari's HTML5 video player, etc) and it will cause a freeze and then log out.
However - it could just be video card + processor under load.
This didnt happen before 10.5.8 and I'm thinking it's not the new 27" display causing the issue.
I'm going to attempt to find time to revert back to 10.5.0 and then combo update back up to 10.5.7 which may be difficult as our IT is remote and we don't have access to Snow Leopard discs.
I may just have to bring my own in.

  • Listening to 3rd party radio stream (via Tuner) gets interrupted by ipod

I was listening to an internet radio stream at the gym tonight when all of a sudden the phone just switches over and starts playing a song from my music library. The display on the phone still showed the Tuner app' in the foreground but with the audio from the ipod app' playing.
I switched to the ipod made sure it was paused and then tried to play Tuner radio again only to have the ipod cut back in a few minutes later. This kept happening until I left the gym.
I understan that if the internet stream drops out then the music will stop, but why is the ipod "kicking in"?

    Thanks for responding!
No, I don't jump the gun and advance to the next song/podcast, it just plays through to the end and then the next song starts.
I don't think the JBL On Stage works the same way Ford's Sync does. I should have been more specific in how the car's built in iPod interface works. You cannot control the iPhone's iPod features from the iPhone screen when plugged in. The screen displays a message that it's in slave mode or some such thing and all control comes from the car's controls.
Things like the On Stage you still have control over the device while docked, so it may be reacting differently.
I looked at Circuit City for any kind of device that was more than just a dock/external speakers, but no luck there. Surprised that place is still in business, poor selection, no customers...
