Listing Apple serial numbers in eBay ads?

I'm getting ready to sell a few of my Macs on eBay. When purchasing equipment on eBay I always found that knowing the product's serial number is very helpful because I can easily determine more details about the item I'm interested in, including product specifications and any remaining warranty.
Is there any reason I shouldn't publish my Apple serial numbers on eBay?
Thanks!

I notice moderators will come and edit out part of serial numbers. I think that allows one to know the model year and when, but not the individual machine, which you don't want posted.
Like putting "555-xxxx" for phone numbers.
And I guess there is some room with a legal legit buy where the buyer wants to have insurance that they are not buying or dealing with gray market or questionable unit(s).

  • Apple Serial Numbers...potential abuse?

    Howdy Mac Discussion Community...
I have a general question my ibook G3 serial number and a craigslist seller.
So, I picked up an Airport card from a seller on craigslist, pretty straightforward, right?
During our appointment, the seller asks me if I would like to upgrade my RAM, noticing upon the installation that the RAM I had could be upgraded, and that they could potentially provide me with more. A grand notion, one might say, right?
In doing so, this person asks me for my iBook's serial # to ensure that they have the right RAM for my model machine. Afterwords I began to think to myself "Why would they need the serial # if they know the model?
    My question for those who are more experienced in such matters is this;
1.1 Was I foolish in releasing this information to an otherwise complete stranger?
Does this mean that I may have future difficulties with Apple in regards to ownership concerning this machine?
I purchased the machine off of eBay some time ago and have as of yet to contact Apple with my registration #.
2.1 Should I do this immediately?
3.1 Does anyone see any potential pitfalls for me in the future?
Being prudent over paranoid and possibly a little too trusting of others,

    Thanks for responding.

I've never figured out what mischief anyone can do with a serial number, but Apple does not encourage posting them here in Apple Discussions. The only danger I see is if somebody were to report it stolen using the serial number, especially if they knew your identity.

  • I bought Logic Studio from a pawn shop with Pro Tools and an iLok. It didn't include the serial numbers, which I thought were on the iLok. Is their any way to us this as an upgrade from like eBay?

Can I buy a used version of Pro Tools with the serial numbers from eBay, then istall Pro Tools and Logic I bought from a pawn shop using them as an upgrade?

If it sounds fishy, it probably is. Serial numbers from eBay typically don't work, because they are stolen, reused, etc. Logic Pro has nothing to do with iLok. And Apples doesn't offer cross-grades or upgrades anymore. If you want their software you go to the Mac App Store application and buy it. That's the only way.

    Hi BradSLane,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has one method to find your serial number:

  • Emac Serial numbers from exchange program

I was wondering if anyone out there knew exactly what the serial number range was for the Emacs that have the bad capacitors on them. I thought they were ones that started with G84 - G85 but did not see any numbers after that. I want to try and narrow down what computers I might have that would fit for calling apple. I know it has been a while since this problem was first discovered but just in the last year has any of the ones I have started giving me trouble. I am hoping to get these taken care of. At my school we have bought and still buy a lot of apple products so hopefully they will honor the product they sell. Thanks

The list of serial numbers is apparently gone.
My eMac has been freezing lately, and I have to hold the power button in to turn it off and restart it. I thought that I checked the serial number a long time ago and found that it is NOT a part of the problem batch.
I am trying a fresh install of Tiger right now to see if that helps my problem.
G833010** is the serial number on my eMac.
I turned it over and removed the cover, but, there were no capacitors readily visible behind the steel cage in there by the memory. The one I could see, I could not see well enough to see if it is bulging.
Hopefully, mine is not one of the bad ones, because I know the repair program is LONG over now. I'm not confident enough in soldering to do a board level repair of my logic board either. I have done a search, and it does not seem like I could find a different one very easily.
    Thanks!

  • IPad Serial Numbers

I have lost 2 iPads and am trying to locate their Serial Numbers.
I have found the list of serial numbers in the support section but as I was silly enough not to name them, I have no way of finding out which is which. I did on the other hand name them on iCloud, Is there any way of using the Find my iPad app to find the serial number?
    Many thanks,
    Tom

Apple (and no one else) can not assist (with serial number or iCloud) in finding a lost or stolen iPad.
Report to police along with serial number. Change all your passwords.

  • How to get the serial Numbers issued for an STO

    Hi,
I created my own STO and mapped a serialised material for the same using transaction. I increased the stock by issuing serial numbers. The /SYCLO/MM_DOPURCHASEORDER_GET BAPI returns the PO header, item and longtext details. I want the serial numbers which are issued to the STO and the list of serial numbers for which the receipts has been done.
I want to know how to get the serial numbers which are issued to the STO throught the standard function module. I want only the issued serial numbers not the one for which the receipts has been done.
I tried using the standard BAPI, "BAPI_PO_GETDETAIL1" to get the serial number collection. But the FM is not returning the issued serial number as well as the list of serial numbers for which the receipts has been done. It is returning only the PO history in which the list of document number are present.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Mohan.

    Hi,
Using the transaction "MB1C" and movement type "561", I filled the required details such as Material Number, Quantity, Storage Location and Batch. After filling all these details, when I press enter, it will ask for me to enter the serial numbers equal to the quantity specified. I entered the serial numbers by selecting the available serial numbers for that particular material by pressing F4 help.
Please let me know if you need any more inputs in this regards.
    Thanks,
    Mohan.

  • Serial numbers via sql query

    Hi,
I'm having trouble getting the correct serial numbers via SQL.
From PHP I run the following query to get the Delivery Notes:
    select ODLN.DocEntry,ODLN.CardCode,ODLN.CardName,ODLN.DocDueDate,ODLN.DocDate,ODLN.NumAtCard,NNM1.SeriesName,ODLN.DocNum,ODLN.SlpCode,ODLN.CANCELED,ODLN.DocStatus,DLN1.ItemCode,DLN1.Dscription,DLN1.Quantity,DLN1.ShipDate,DLN1.LineStatus,ODLN.NumAtCard,ODLN.U_CodSit,ODLN.DocTotal,ODLN.DocCur,ODLN.CreateDate,ODLN.TrackNo,DLN1.SerialNum from ODLN INNER JOIN NNM1 ON (ODLN.Series = NNM1.Series) INNER JOIN OCRD ON (ODLN.CardCode = OCRD.CardCode AND OCRD.CardCode = '".$_POST["sapcode"]."' AND OCRD.Password = '".$_POST["sappwd"]."') INNER JOIN DLN1 ON ODLN.DocEntry = DLN1.DocEntry ORDER BY ODLN.CreateDate DESC,ODLN.DocEntry ASC
While I loop through the results I then try to grab the serial numbers. I tried this:
    SELECT OSRI.IntrSerial FROM OSRI INNER JOIN SRI1 ON ( (SRI1.SysSerial = OSRI.SysSerial) AND (SRI1.BaseNum = ".$row['DocNum'].") ) INNER JOIN DLN1 ON (DLN1.DocEntry = SRI1.BaseEntry) WHERE ( (DLN1.DocEntry = ".$row['DocEntry'].") AND (DLN1.ItemCode = OSRI.ItemCode) AND (DLN1.ItemCode = '".$row['ItemCode']."') ) ORDER BY OSRI.IntrSerial
but it gives me incoherent results compared to what appears in the SAP b1 client. For ex., some serial numbers are fine but in other cases I get more serial numbers than accounted for (article quantity = 1 but get 2 serial numbers; in SAP B1 client only one of the two serial numbers appears, as expected).
So I then modified the query and added a check for the CardCode:
    SELECT OSRI.IntrSerial FROM OSRI INNER JOIN SRI1 ON ( (SRI1.SysSerial = OSRI.SysSerial) AND (SRI1.BaseNum = ".$row['DocNum'].") AND (SRI1.CardCode = '".$_POST["sapcode"]."') ) INNER JOIN DLN1 ON (DLN1.DocEntry = SRI1.BaseEntry) WHERE ( (OSRI.CardCode = '".$_POST["sapcode"]."') AND (DLN1.DocEntry = ".$row['DocEntry'].") AND (DLN1.ItemCode = OSRI.ItemCode) AND (DLN1.ItemCode = '".$row['ItemCode']."') ) ORDER BY OSRI.IntrSerial
This query is slightly better in the sense that at least I don't get serial numbers that are not supposed to be there (eg. if quantity=1 I will not get 2 serial numbers as in the previous query). However, in some cases it works as expected and in other delivery notes it doesn't because it simply doesn't list the serial numbers (which where found in the first query).
It might be because the CardCode field isn't always thoroughly set?
If so, is it just a "user problem" so I should tell my company to review the way they fill SAP data?
Or am I doing the wrong query?
(The SDK doc regarding OSRI is confusing as it doesn't even point to SRI1 and I don't fully understand the relationships)
    Regards,
    Vieri

    Vieri,
you can catch (using MS SQL Profiler) the query which is executed by SBO once you click on serial nambers report from Delivery Note form.
this is one of the ways to get a solution quickly.

  • I got a year subscription to cc but it asks me for serial numbers i don't have when i download the software

I got a year subscription to CC and then i went to download some of the programs and now it asks for a serial number, i didn't get any serial numbers from adobe and i thought they would just work when i signed in with my adobe id? am i supposed to have a list of serial numbers somewhere?

The Email that is associated with Forum does not have any CC attached with it, please let us know if you have any other Email under which it has been registered.
CC  mostly asks for serial number if:
    1. There is no CC registered to the ID with which you had signed.
    2. There are entries of Adobe in Host files of the computer.
    3. The activation count has increased.

    Thanks in Advance,

  • Serial Numbers Not Listed on Identification Chart

I bought a few used emacs. The last three characters in the serial numbers are not listed in the apple identification chart. They are "SCF" & "QJA".
How can I tell what emacs I have?
The hard drives were wiped with dban, and I can't get them to boot from OS X install disks. They start to boot and go to a gray screen with the apple and "gear" then garbage appears in the bottom middle of the screen and it freezes.
I see the answer often "Use the discs that came with the computer." How can I when I can't tell what computer I have, and they came without any discs.
I have tried booting from several different OS versions, so I can access disc utilities to reformat the HD, but none seem to work.
    Thanks for any help.

I'm nervous about posting a serial number on a non-Apple site. There may be another way.
Our eMac 700 has a sticker on the inside of the optical drive door that has serial number, ethernet address AND a third line has the complete description of the computer as it was shipped. On ours, that line starts with "G4 700/..." This will show the processor speed--a good place to start. Here's an image of that sticker from that Apple article:
The third line says the computer shipped with a 1.25G processor, 256MB RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and has a DVD-writable optical drive and a 56K modem.
We have a later eMac which we bought from Apple as a refurb. That is shown on the label but not the other info. Refurbs of that generation commonly start with the letter "R."
I hope the price of these units was very cheap as any Mac with a wiped hard drive and no install/restore disks is a candidate for "Doorstop of the Year" unless you can find the proper disks. And proper systems disks are expensive and must match the computer variant, or be the more expensive full retail install disks (~ US$130).
Install/restore disks that shipped with a particular model are gray; full retail install disks are black. Can you contact the seller about getting the proper disks?

Why can't we track serial numbers and not the apple iD.   Since serial numbers can't be reset or erased. ?

Unfortunately it is in both Apple's and your carrier's economic interest to not provide such a feature. One would think that with all the technological capabilities that apple has provided us with that they would be able to do this as well. That's the point here, they are able to do it, probably quite easily; but it's economically beneficial to them if they don't. Remember, Apple doesn't provide the find my iPhone app as a pre-downloaded application, you have to do so yourself. One may say this is for privacy reasons, but there are clearly other reasons as well. So, Apple has no incentive to add such a feature unless it becomes an issue (customers demanding it or other companies providing such a feature). Thus as consumers we need to make this an issue that apple must address. I too lost my iPhone. The fact that Apple doesn't provide a feature such as allowing one to "flag" their device as stolen and thereby preventing that device from being unlocked, reset in itunes, or immediately turned into a tracking device when turned on is pretty frustrating and ridiculous. Apple provides very limited functions in their native find my iPhone app, and yet there are many more features it could provide. I'm aware of apps that provide far more capability, such as preventing shut down, taking pictures, taking audio/video recordings, remote backup, photo capture after failed unlock, call log, sms forwarding, and even constant GPS tracking. My point here is this, Apple can easily provide features that would further enable you to recover your apple device but there isn't an incentive to and there is actually economic incentive to not provide such features. We need to provide them with the incentive to do so, or else it is likely to never happen.
