Little black box

I have a student user that has a little black box follow him around whenever he moves his cursor. I checked system preferences and it is unchecked in universal access and it still is persistent....
Suggestions?

Could it be this little black box?

  • How can i scroll vertically without the little black box?

         Hello,
I need to review alot of pdf documents with adobe reader 9.0 or acrobat pro, and i need to be able to move forward and backward fast alot using both the mouse wheel and the scroll bar. I'm having a problem with this.
When i click "show one page at a time"-button and I use the scroll bar in the right, reader doesnt scroll the through the pages, but instead shows an idiotic little black box on the right thats too small to see pretty much anything from.
If i use the "scroll through pages continuously"-button, the scroll bar works normally, but the mouse wheel works too slow.
Using the reader in either way feels like running with a ball and chain in my leg, and I do really believe im not the only one.
Despite of hours of searching, trial and error I've somehow managed to miss how to remove that black pop-up-thing and scroll normally, when using the "show one page at time".
Please tell me I can scroll normally with scroll bar while being able to move fast with the wheel, and how do I do it?

    Thanks.
    What i mean in brief:
In adobe reader you cannot live-scroll with the scroll bar when using the "show one page at a time" setting, but instead it shows a little thumbnail-window on the right. The other setting makes mouse wheel too slow to be useful.
A scroll bar that doesn't live-scroll is probably one of the most horrible "features" you can have in a program. Since it's in a program as common as adobe reader, im guessing there's alot of frustrated googling going on about it.No answers around though.

  • Can I turn off the setting that displays the height and width in a little black box when using the marquee tool?

In Photoshop CC, on a mac...
When using the marquee selection tool, a little black box pops up next to the curser and displays in real time, the height and width of the selection.  The same annoying box also appears when dragging an item with the move tool, displaying the numerical location of the cursor.  Is there anyway to turn off the display of that little black box?  It is driving me bonkers.

Under the preferences cmd/ctrl-k click on "Interface". At the bottom of the UI is a drop down box for show transformation. Set that to "Never"

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • Help! I can't get rid of this little black box!

I ordered DSL service and tried to hook it up the other day, unsuccessfully. In the instructions it says that if you have problems to insert the disk provided. I told the lady I ordered from that I had a Mac and she said it would be no problem, but of course no where does it say that this disk is not usable on a Mac.
You get where this is going I'm sure, I put it in and followed what it said, including restarting the iMac as instructed. After the restart it will do the "bong" sound and I get the initial white screen with the grey apple, but I never get the little grey lines in a wheel shape. After a couple of minutes I get a litte black box about 2" wide and 1/4" tall across the top of the apple with little colored lines in it, and nothing else happens or works. I can't even get the disk drive to open or close without holding the button on the back, turning it off, and then holding the open button while I turn it back on with the button.
I have restarted using the hardware repair disk, all is fine. I restarted using Disk Warrier, all repaired, but still not working. I restarted using the 10.2 install disk and verified and repaired the disk and permissions, several were repaired, but still the black box. I tried holding the shift key at restart and still the box, and also tried holding the control and "s" key with no luck.
Of course AT&T knows nothing about the Mac and after talking for 1.5 hours to 5 different people and having a tech guy come and not know anything to help they tell me I have to call Apple to pay for help. I am so frustrated!!! Is there anyone out there with suggestions before I call and pay?
    Many thanks,
    Cassie

    Hi Cassie:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I have not used OS X 10.2.x for a long time, but I think you should consider and archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
An A&I will install a fresh OS X - hopefully eliminating whatever happened with the AT&T disk. You would, of course, have to update OS X to current levels for 10.2.
    Barry
P.S. It also occurred to me that AT&T does not support OS X 10.2 - you might ask them that question.

  • Little Black Boxes

This is a friends computer. Small black boxes will sometimes outline certain objects, such as the safari back button, safari message, and the HD. He's unsure what this means, and is getting a little freaked about it. does anyone know what's going on?

Voice Over has been activated in System Preferences>Universal Access.

  • Screen sharing; little black box

I have a new MacBook (purchased in the last couple of months) with the most recent updates in Leopard. I connect to internet wirelessly via airport express. In our home office there is a G5 running Leopard. Up until recently, can't pinpoint exactly, I have been able to screen share fine, wirelessly and everything. Now, every time I try I get nothing. If I click screen share again I get a little tiny window that is all black. The desktop can connect to my laptop just find. I have the permissions set to all users on both. I have screen sharing on on both. I'm logging in under the name, not guest or anything. It seems that it's happened with an update to leopard and I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if so have you found an answer.

There are some suggestions in these posts:

You have turned on VoiceOver. To turn VoiceOver off, open System Preferences > Accesibility > VoiceOver and turn VoiceOver off

  • A little black box has popped up on my computer. it tells me everything that i am doing, like a tutor. it will not going away and is messing my computer up. my 20 month old daughter was playing on it 2 days ago and it's been like this ever since. Help!

if i enter safari, it will not let me scroll down and look at anything. it immediately will jump back up to the top! help!!!

It sounds like she may have enabled VoiceOver on the machine.  Go to System Preferences, then click on Universal Access.  Check to see if VoiceOver is turned on, and if so turn it off and see if that resolves the issue.

  • Black box (line) surrounds and follows mouse, 'mini' screen size, PIP?

    Hi,
I just tried to install the new wireless mighty mouse and wireless apple keyboard.
The mouse worked for a minute, but the install of the keyboard killed the BT mouse and now there's this ANNOYING black box around the mouse cursor.
After playing with it I've noticed that the pointer cursor, which is surrounded by this box (4:3 ratio box, approx 2" wide by 1.5" tall on my 20" 1600x1200 monitor).
The odd thing is the cursor's position within this box moves in correlation with where on my overall desktop the cursor is placed: If I put my cursor in the upper right corner of my whole screen, the mouse cursor is also in the upper right corner of the small 'box'; if I move it to the lower left of the screen, it is also in the lower left of the box, and so on for the other two corners, and if it's in the middle of the screen, it's in the middel of the little black box.
    So this seems very strange.
Oh, and neither the BT keyboards or the new mighty mouse BT will show up in the BT menu as recognized devices, though they did just briefly in the beginning.
So after buying a new USB hub to be able to plug in the Apple/Belkin USB hub along with the Apple store's D-Link USB Bluetooth adapter and a new BT keyboard and mouse - $200 for a wireless keyboard and mouse, all I have is ultra annoying new software problems and all the same wires as before, with an additional keyboard and mouse on my desk. UGH!!!
Can anyone help with this 'black box around the keyboard issue, at least?
Thank you soo, so much for any solutions!

Oh and this weren't enough my barely used video ipod video 60 GB self-distructed this AM - melted inside somehow. I am in Apple ****.

    GREEN STAR FOR YOU!
Of all the things - somehow, and I've never even been into this control panel, inside the Universal Access/Seeing/Options dialogue, the box was checked saying "Show preview rectangle when zoomed out".
I unchecked this, and it went away. I had not selected this, ever. How it happened, I don't know except that I do have a Logitech NuLOOQ tooldial device which I had unplugged from USB while troubleshooting my BT wireless keyboard and mouse, and this device requires having the 'enable access for assistive devices' checked in the Universal Access control panel.
Perhaps unplugging that device somehow lead to this problem, but otherwise I've never 'visited' the UA pref panel or checked anything in it.
Odd, but THANK YOU for the suggestion!!!

  • PhotoBooth - iMovie Black Boxes

I have seen only a few people mention this problem online, and noone seems to get an answer, though at least one person said that completely reformatting seemed to fix the problem, but this isn't an option for me...
I updated my MacBook Pro (17" Mid-2007) and my Mac Pro (8-Core) both to 10.7, and subsequently to 10.7.2
After update, when I open PhotoBooth on my MBP, the effects "Lovestruck" and "Dizzy" have little black boxes (the alpha channel?) showing around the hearts and birds, likewise any 3rd party effects that mask out sections using an alpha (like the popular package that includes a 'mask' allowing your eyes and mouth in the faces of a gorilla, a clown, and Steve Ballmer (a clownish gorilla) only have black spaces where you should be seeing parts of my face. Also, when I use the 4-up photo effect, the image I see, when Photo Booth doesn't crash, is that of two black boxes, one askew above the other. The thumbnail of the image is correct, though.
I have searched all over, but the only other problem people seem to have with Photo Booth involves it opening in 32-bit mode and no effects showing up. This is not the issue I am having, and the problem is not isolated to PhotoBooth, as iChat also exhibits the same problem when I try to use the effects.
I chose to post this question in the iMovie section to hopefully avoid people telling me to 'uncheck 32-bit', and also because the problem affects certain iMovie themes. The Photo Book theme, for instance, refuses to place a photo or video in the opening of the book. It just stays a black box. Also, if I change any text in any of the other themes, then the text is replaced with plain black boxes, or an extremely generic font.
I don't believe this to be an isolated hardware issue, though it may be a conflict with other software. My MBP did this from day 1 of the 10.7 update, but I assumed it was due to the age of my machine, older/slower graphics and RAM, etc. But I recently got a used 8-core Mac Pro, with the 512MB X1900 graphics card and 14GB of RAM. When it arrived, the first thing I did was install 10.7 and the 10.7.2 update. No problems. Installed Final Cut Studio 3 apps, and also Adobe CS5 Master, and iLife 11. At some point during those installs, I opened Photo Booth and showed my wife the Lovestruck and Dizzy effects, which were working fine, later when I went to show the effects to my children, it looked just like my MBP. I opened iMovie, and it also has the same problem. I do not know which apps I installed after showing the effects to my wife, but I do know that the ONLY additional apps that have been installed on this machine are the ones I mentioned. I installed 10.7.2, FCS3, CS5, iLife '11 - oh, and iStat Menus. That's it. I don't know which of these, if any, could be causing the problem, since my MBP does not have iStat Menus installed, and is running Final Cut Studio 2, and Adobe CS4 - both older versions than I use on the Mac Pro.
My iMac shipped with 10.7 and iLife, and has been updated, but I have been reluctant to install my Adobe or Final Cut packages on it for my wife to use, as it is currently the only machine I have that is still able to use iMovie's themes properly for home videos.

I did close and restart firefox when trying to HWA fix yeah, also I have no addons.

  • Black box around buttons and windows

My 19 month old daughter has learned to climb up to the desk, and OPEN my laptop! Before I could stop her, or turn on AlphaBaby, she had pressed a number of keys, and now a little black box highlights various things in the programs I have open. As I type this, the red circle at the top left to close the window has a box around it. When I was trying to find how to turn it off in system preferences, the bar at the top with the arrows and Show All button had a box around it. In Mail my inbox window has a box around it.
Any ideas as to how to turn it off?
    Thanks!
    Heidi

    Your daughter shows great promise!
Go to System Preferences/Universal Access and turn OFF Voice Over.
    (She pressed Command-F5 !)

  • This black box is making noise--what is it? (pictures)

I know there have been several threads regarding the white noise given off by Motherboards under heavy load.  I also have a K7N2G-ILSR and it has made the noise since day one.  Like others, I have tracked the noise to the little black box just above the mosfets near the CPU.
When I press on it, the pitch of the noise varies.  Ideally, I would like to strip the tape from around the box and hot-glue the entire thing, but I want to make sure it won't hose everything. I don't care about the warranty, but if I can't make the sound stop, I'm liable to kill someone.
I would like to know what the black box does and if anyone has any luck silencing the sound!
    Thanks!

In this case it stores energy and timely releases it, In MSI's words, this is normal, as the environment is high frequency.
To elaborate further on what I said before, what's likely happening is some of the components or that choke may be at the bottom or top of the allowable tolerance for manufacture. All electronics are not EXACTLY the same as far as components go. This is what's referred to as "parametric differences." You have the PCB, (printed circuitboard) CPU, RAM, peripherals, power supply, and, add to that, all the components that populate a PCB. A PCB is used on your VGA card, RAM, power supply, and ALL of your peripherals. All of these parts are manufactured with allowable tolerances, same goes for the PCB. Get the idea? See how this becomes an environment where things can easily get out of hand? Couple that with the fact of how many possible configurations can take place, and also that many of the componets and parts are manufactured by many different vendors.
Take a circuit board for example, you have multiple layers, dielectric in between those layers, the foil or copper layers in the internals are a set weight or thickness but the outer layers are usually plated up and/or etched down (this can include the internals). The etch process is done with acid, and you get a minute bit of what's called "etch down" where if you were to look at a cross section of a routed trace, you would notice that there is a slight "V" shape since the acid will etch around the sides. The board vendor must compensate for the etch down by enlarging the original artwork. However, it will NEVER be exact every time. The general specs for most of the boards we produce are +/- 20% of the original artwork supplied in the design data. That is, if you have an .008 thousandths trace, we can be within .0016 of the original.
Granted some tolerances are tighter when manufacturing high speed and impedance controlled designs, but you get the idea.
Now, you have basically the same scenario when it comes to components as mentioned previously. That is why you see users reporting strange behavior, mind you, it's a small percentage, but it is generally exacerbated when multiple parts, components, and peripherals operate in a high speed, high frequency environment like today's performance PC's. It only takes a few things to be at the top or the bottom of a tolerance to create this anomaly, or another issue altogether.
This is what I know personally through my experience as a PCB designer and manufacturer, and then being in the electronics and IT industry, and of course, an enthusiast

  • Little black highlight box stays on screen....?

My mini just starting doing this yesterday. When ever the cursor is moved over a desktop icon, or when I click on a text box on line, or even just randomly on websites, a black box outlines the item and remains on the screen even after it has opened a new page. Also, when I go to the apple in the task bar to shut the computer down, it now says restart twice, shut down twice and log out so-and-so twice...I have no idea why it's doing this, any answers or solutions? thanks!

You have accidently enabled Universal Access. Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Universal Access and disable it. Note the shortcuts in Universal Access, so you don't accidently press them again.

  • How can I install Adobe flash player on my Mac using Safari OR Chrome? I have gone through every step on all of the help pages. The installation process always stops with the black box that briefly says, "Retrieving Install . . . ", then nothing.

I have followed every step in the various help pages I was directed to when troubleshooting the inability to install Adobe Flash Player on my Mac using either Safari or Chrome. Everything has failed. I always get the black box that says briefly, "Retrieving instal. . . " and then goes blank. When I close that window, I get the message, "Adobe Flash Player could not be installed." Then it gives some links to follow for troubleshooting. I have followed ALL of the links there and on other help pages, to no avail. I've run into problems installing Adobe before, but it's never been this bad. Would someone please develop another format besides Adobe? Trying to get help from Adobe feels a little like trying to find a building in New York City with no map or GPS. The time required is voluminous, the emotional energy a/k/a frustration is overwhelming, and long before I get anything resolved, I wish the earth would open up and swallow all things Adobe@. Absence that miraculous intervention, I have to figure out what to do next. Does anyone know? Anyone?

Same question, same answer: use the offline installer http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_osx.dmg
