Little PowerBook Issues

Hey. I'm thinking of purchasing a refurbished PowerBook G4 from the online site. First of all, does this sound like a good idea?
Secondly, I'm wondering if any of you guys who already own a PB, refurbished or not, if there are little things that bug you. For example, on my iBook: The battery hangs a little bit, it rocks about 1 cm, things like that. I'm not trying to be picky, but this is my first PB - and I just wanted to know.
Thanks in advance and happy new year.
Mike.

Yeah, I got three lemons, all in a row. Sounds like the start of like a nursery rhyme.
I too am curious about San Fran but do we seriously expect any new PowerPC Laptops? I doubt it and I for one will not be investing in the first wave of MacIntel machines. If things go as expected the Apple Refurb Store may soon be the only way to get PPC PowerBooks if that is what you are after.
The current 12" PB is cute but for nearly £400 less (new prices) you can get a 12" iBook with a 60GB hard drive factory-fitted. What's more, you get twice the memory soldered to the motherboard (saving about 70% on the cost of upgrading to 1GB using third party RAM) and longer battery life. Oh, and it pretty much matches the PowerBook in benchmark testing.
If you want a Superdrive, get LaCie's slimline Firewire bus-powered 16x Dual Layer DVD±RW for under £120. It is at least twice as fast, has twice the capacity and is not so fussy about media as the Apple SD (see forums for SD burn-speed issues). Need a faster/bigger hard drive? Buy a 60GB LaCie Firewire portable 5400rpm drive for £100 - you can back-up on it, boot from it and hide it in your pocket. Every portable user should have something similar anyway. Look:
iBook (40GB HD) REFURB + 60GB FW drive + FireWire DVD + 256MB RAM (total 768 MB) = £800 approx
iBook (60GB HD) NEW + FireWire DVD + 256MB RAM (total 768 MB) = £870 approx
PBook (60GB HD & combo) REFURB + FireWire DVD + 512MB RAM (total 768 MB) = £950 approx
PBook (80GB HD & Superdrive) REFURB + 512MB RAM (total 768 MB) = £950 approx
PBook (80GB HD & Superdrive) NEW + 512MB RAM (total 768 MB) = £1150 approx
We can all do the maths in £ or $ - so why do I still hesitate to trade my dodgy PB for an iBook???

  • Please help, Powerbook issues!

    Sorry if this is long. Hello everyone. I am having quite the time with my Powerbook. Here is a little background information. I purchased it in August of 2004 and I have Apple Care, so everything is under warranty. For the most part my laptop has been very fast, hardly freezes, and is always very responsive. A few weeks ago I was at a friends house with my PB plugged into a wall and I am quite sure the machine overheated and froze. I wasn't able to get it to stop freezing, even after restarting at least 5 times. I turned it off and left it alone until I arrived home the next day. When I turned it on it was fine and was fine for another week. I was at this friends house again and the same thing happened. I shut it off and brought it home and it was fine again.
    A few days later it freezes at home and I had to restart it. When the machine turned on it said "Please restart your computer." And I did, again and again and again, kept saying the same thing. I called the Apple support line and they had me do a PMU reset and a PRAM reset - nothing worked. We ran a disk utility from my boot disks and it found a red error in my HD that it couldn't repair. I ended up having to do an erase and install. I thought that would fix my problems, but I was wrong. The next day my machine was constantly freezing with every program I opened. The color spinning wheel shows up every time I attempt to click on anything. As you can imagine, this is qutie annoying. I ran ANOTHER disk utility and it found no errors. I've also ran a hardware test (the short version and looped the extended version) and that found no errors.
    I have a friend who works for apple support and he and I tried EVERYTHING over the phone. I even replaced my 1 gig stick of ram with my original 256 stick of Apple ram, and it's still just as slow and freezing. I am really running out of possible reasons for this. If anyone has ANY possible ideas, I would appreciate it. I want to get as many answers and opinions as I can before I drop my PB off at the retail store and say goodbye to it for 3 weeks. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate it very much.

    To me it sounds more like the hard drive is in need of replacement and, since you have AppleCare, the best thing to do is to get the drive replaced by Apple.
    The downside to a drive replacement is that you will lose all your data unless it has been backed up.

  • Little Snitch Issue

    I have posted a similar question in the installation category as I installed little snitch before reinstallation of my OS. When applications which were net dependant needed to access the internet, it seems that it couldn't. So I my best bet would be little snitch as that was te only app that messed around with the firewall settings and stuff.
    It seems that after reinstallation of 10.5, little snitch malfunctioned or was corrupted and required a redownload. I had the dmg for it anyway and it is up to date i.e. version 2.2.
    So I reinstalled the app and got rid of all the rules and filters. However, this did not work for me. And in addition to that, yes, I have tried uninstalling the files using the uninstaller that came with it and yes, I have manually removed all files that were related to it using the app, Easy Find and Appcleaner.
    Please advice. Thank you.

    I couldn't contact the developer as I was short on time. Anyway, after finding some time, I've solved the issue by simply restarting my mac after uninstalling it. Works perfectly now. Thanks.

  • Little security issue in password box on connections

    I'm on 1.2.0.29.98 on OSX. I have a password with an @ symbol in it. I was making a new connection in the connection dialog box and typed in the password wrong. I noticed when I double clicked the obfuscated password it only highlighted part of it to the right of the @ symbol instead of the whole password. For other symbols ($, % for example) it will only highlight from where you double clicked up to (and including) that symbol or between two of those symbols.
    It could help people to figure out the passwords, it should highlight all the password when you double click it.

    Thank you for bringing this to our attention. As you mentioned, it isn't a glaring hole in password security, but even a little hole is undesirable.

  • Major powerbook issue, crashing, reformatted, still problematic

    I've searched the forums and the web and cant find much about my problem
    So heres the gist of the situation
    So Saturday my computer started to act up, I opened it up and woke it. It turned on perfectly fine and then a few seconds later, the cursor disappeared and went back to sleep. I did this 3-4 more times before it finally stayed up
    Saturday night i put my powerbook to sleep by closing it up, just like i would normally do. Sunday morning i woke up and opened up my computer. It did not wake from sleep and it would not shut down by holding the power button. I took the battery and power cable out and the computer was still in sleep mode, the LED was "breathing" and such. This went on for a few minutes before i could hold the power button and turn it off. After inserting the power cable and battery, i started the computer and it got to the grey screen then shut down and restarted; a partial boot loop. When it restarted itself that second time it got past the grey screen, to the blue screen, then proceeded to put itself to sleep. I tried to wake it up to no avail.
    I then proceeded with the standard boot from disc, repair permissions and repair disk. Permissions repaired and the disk turned out to be okay. I then rebooted and same thing happened as in the previous paragraph.
    I booted in verbose mode, nothing unusual except for "Link down on en1" but again it failed to go past the blue screen without putting itself into a coma like sleep.
    I booted in single user mode to see if there was anything unusual there, no problems seen and I exited. It then failed to get past the blue screen without going to sleep.
    I then wiped and reformatted my computer from the 10.5 disc i have. (My powerbook is a 1.67 GHz April '05 model, just in case you dont see that at the bottom of this post in my sig)
    I restored everything from my computer from a previous back up except for library and system files.
    I updated and restarted and immediately got a kernel panic at startup with debug and kernel panic info which i did not take down (a stupid move i must admit). It wouldnt reboot without kernel panics.
    I wiped and reformatted AGAIN and restored from my backups. All was fine until this evening. I tried waking my computer from sleep and at first it would wake, but then after a few seconds later, it went back to sleep. I tried waking it up several more times to no avail.
    I rebooted in verbose, nothing abnormal. I rebooted in single user mode, nothing abnormal and typed exit. it booted up perfectly fine. but im afraid theres an underlying problem here
    I've reset pram and done everything else on the troubleshoot checklist, nothing worked.
    Can anyone shed some light on this situation?

    I got a system log of the problem (bold, underline, italic is where the temp sensor says the system is overheating...problem was that it was cool to the touch and it was 50 degrees fahrenheit in the morning.

    Looks like a faulty temp sensor or bad PMU, is replacing the logic board the only option, or is there a way to bypass the temperature killswitch?

  • Airport extreme 802.11g with new Powerbook issue

    Situation: Have a new Powerbook and replacing Linksys wireless router with older Airport Extreme. After connecting, network shows connection to the automatically named Apple network, however, unable to get on internet. Guessing the base station has a long forgotten password, so tried to use airport admin utility to reset but couldn't locate the program on the hard drive. Do the new G4's not include this program ? Or could it be some other steps I'm not taking to resolve ?
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi, dvj001. There are no "new Powerbooks" or "new G4s"; the last G4 Macs were discontinued more than two years ago. What model is your machine, assuming it really is a Powerbook?

  • Weird little performance issue

    Greetings,
    Some of my applications show history plots (like in the MS Windows
    taskmanager CPU load plot). Everything works fine except for one little
    anomaly on just one machine:
    In certain situations I cant use the Graphics.drawPolyline method,
    so I draw little line segments from point (x, y) to point (x+1, y') where y
    and y' can be different values.
    Here's the silly thing I noticed on that single machine: if y == y'' everything
    runs at top speed, i.e. effectively one single horizontal line is drawn, but
    if y != y'' for at least one sample point, the thing shows hiccups and
    slows down tremendously.
    I just can't understand why this nasty little phenomenon roars its ugly
    little head. I do realise this is a vague question, I do realise that this
    happens on only one machine, but still I'm wondering ...
    There are no excessive repaints, no complicated calculations going on,
    no threads eating up performance etc. It's just that one single machine
    that slows down pathetically when it has to draw little line segments
    that are not horizontal line segments. FYI if I use the drawPolyline (and
    end up with the wrong stuff), everything keeps on driving full speed.
    Any relevant comments anyone?
    kind regards,
    Jos

    A stab in the dark:
    If it's Windows, could it be a direct draw problem?
    See: docs/guide/2d/flags.htmlI've tried almost all possible flag combinations to no avail: drawing
    non-vertical or non-horizontal single lines is hopeless on that single
    machine. Using a drawPolyline goes as fast as on all the
    other machines ... (drawing single lines on the other machines runs
    fast too). Unfortunately I can't use drawPolyline here, because
    a lot of little line segments need to be coloured differently ...
    Oh well, I guess it's hacking time again ;-)
    kind regards,
    Jos

  • Little visibility issue in my game

    Alright, so I got bored at work and started writing this game, and I grasp the concept of polymorphism, and inheritance, but the implimentation eludes me a bit.
    Anyway the run down is, I have a super class called Mob, from that two classes are extended, human, and monster. from those, more classes are extended, such as Paladin (human) Dragon(monster) and so forth.
    Both monsters, and humans have a common method of Attack(mob temp) which I put in the Mob class. This is fine and dandy up to this point.
    In the Attack() method, Humans and monsters both have some different chararistics, such as humans can drink health/mana potions, and monsters can frenzy() etc. So, in the Attack() method, I have some logic to determine if it's a monster/human, and they are able to perform their unique actions.
    Since however, that DrinkPotion() is in class human, Frenzy() is in class Monster etc, The compiler is telling me it cannot see those methods.
    I may be going about them wrong, i'm just not sure though.
    Also, in the class with Main, I have them declaired as
    mob player;
    mob CPU;
    Then later, when the player chooses the class, I set the base class reference to the new derived class object,
    Warrior warrior = new Warrior();
    player = warrior;
    I just don't know why class Mob can't see the methods in grandchildren classes such as Warrior. It is afterall a warrior object i'm performing the dot operator on, is it not? ( such as player.GetHeathPotionsLeft(); )
    Any help is apreciated!

    The thing is you shouldn't put the implementation of the "attack" method in Mob. The idea of polymorphism is that you can treat all "actors" in your game as instances of class Mob (and therefore to have an attack() methods), while leaving the actual implementation of the method up to the various subclasses. Those subclasses will be able to see the methods inside themselves just fine, your Mob class doesn't need to know about them.
    So you could have something like this:public interface Mob {
    public void attack(Mob target);
    }and thenpublic class Monster implements Mob {
    public boolean isAngry() { // could also be private
       // put code here to determine if the monster is angry
    private void frenzy() { // private, only Monster itself needs to know this
       // put code here to put your monster into a frenzy
    public void attack(Mob target) {
       if(isAngry()) {
        frenzy();
       // put code here to actually attack
    }andpublic class Human implements Mob {
      public void attack(Mob target) {
        // put some code here to attack
    }and last but not least:public class Paladin extends Human {
      private void pray() { // private, only Paladins need to know this
        // put code here that determines if the prayer is heard and what happens then
      public void attack(Mob target) {
        pray();
        super.attack(target); // super.something() means use the implementation of my parent class, in this case the normal Human attack().
    }You could then use this from your main game class like so:....
      List<Mob> participants = ... (some list containing the actors, perhaps sorted by initiative)
      public void setup() {
        participants.add(new Human());
        participants.add(new Human());
        participants.add(new Paladin());
        participants.add(new Monster());
        participants.add(new Monster());
      // handle one turn of attacks in the game
      public void handleTurn() {
        for(int attackerIndex = 0; attackerIndex < participants.size(); attackerIndex++) {
          // note: all we need to know is that the attacker is-a Mob, even though it will actually be a monster, human or paladin
          Mob attacker = participants.get(attackerIndex);
          Mob target = getMostLikelyTargetFor(attacker); // somehow determine who gets attacked
          // because of polymorphism, this will use the implementation of the actual subclass with no casting necessary:
          attacker.attack(target);
    ...Hope this helps.

  • Little Bootcamp Issue

    This is small, but yet it bothers me...
    When you ALT at startup, you see the split between Apple OSX and Windows. Now, for Mac I have my snazzy Icon and it says "MAC HD" ... for Windows its the boring gray drive and "Windows" or some text like that. (Symbolism?)
    Anyway ... I like things to be uniform, even insignificant things, therefore i'd like to make the Windows Icon (the startip one) more snazzy, and ad WIN HD as the text.... is there some easy way to do this?
    I know this sounds silly, but one of the reasons I bought a Mac is to have every detail look SPECTACULAR.
    MacBook 1.83 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    I think you miss the point of the whole thing...
    Mac = Snazy
    Apple then says:
    Warning, you are entering an Unsnazy user environment! check your "non snazy protection" biosuit by looking at this ugly icon. You have been warned.

  • Little design issue

    Im not very used to draw stuff with java but i will try to explain myself the better i can
    Im using netbeans to develop this project and im using threads... i have a class named Main which is a JForm and one named Panel (which is a JPanel).
    I use the panel to draw some stuff in the Jform.
    Main handles another class which is threaded, and this class handles other classes that make very heavy calculations... and on one of this classes (its a static one) i have a method which i want to use to draw some stuff in the panel i mentioned earlier.
    So, because its a static class, i tried to pass the Graphics object from the panel directly to this class, but anyway i wouldn't be able to call repaint() so the panel wouldnt update itself.
    Panel -> Main(Jform) <- threadedclass <- static class
    Im sure its an easy one, but im kind of stuck here.. so any help would be appreciated.

    I finally got it... but i dont think its a clean solution :P
    My static class its like:
    public class CalculosMapa {
        public static BufferedImage buffer;
        public static InterfazGrafica.Panel panel;
        public static void Renderea(Genoma mejorGenoma){
               Graphics2D g = buffer.createGraphics();
               panel.buffer = buffer;
               panel.repaint();
        }And my panel its like:
    public class Panel extends javax.swing.JPanel {
               public java.awt.image.BufferedImage buffer;
               protected void paintComponent(java.awt.Graphics g){
                          super.paintComponent(g);
                          if(this.buffer == null){
                                     CalculosMapa.creaCiudad(g);
                                     int w = this.getWidth();
                                     int h = this.getHeight();
                                     CalculosMapa.buffer = (java.awt.image.BufferedImage)(this.createImage(w,h));
                                     CalculosMapa.panel = this;
                          } else {
                                     Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D)g;
                                     g2.drawImage(this.buffer, null, 0, 0);
               }Any help to simplify it would be appreciated :P thank you very much anyway!

  • Interesting little flash issue

    I recently purchased a new computer,  and after building it/installing everything on it,   I re-installed both firefox and Adobe Flash Player/Macromedia plugin.
    Embedded flash files work perfectly.   Saved flash files however,  do not.   Attempts to open them in a browser window (Firefox or IE) bring up the standard "open or save" prompt,  opening them causes this to be repeated in an infinate loop.   Standalone flash players (that require the adobe plugin/player) dont recognize it as being there either,  even though ive installed it several times,  and embedded stuff still works fine.
    How do I correct this?  Its becoming a headache.

    Ok, thanks Dave. You didn't mention what version of IE you are using, but go to Tools>Manage Add ons and find
    Shockwave Flash Object.........ActiveX....... Flash10d.ocx, this must be listed and it must be Enabled. I am assuming you
    have installed the latest version, being 10.0.42.34 of FP.
    In FF (not very familiar of where things are) but whereever you would find Add ons, Extenstions and Plug-ins.
    Look for SWF plug-in. I'm not sure if FF lists the version or not but since they don't use ActiveX, it will say plug-in.
    Also in Add/Remove, you should have Flash Player 10 ActiveX(indicates IE) and Flash Player Plug-in(indicates FF)
    You probably have Java already.
    The above mentioned must be in the browser in order for FP to function.
    Thanks

  • A dozen+ Kernel Panics, suspect system issues - what to try?

    Hello!
    Well, in the last few weeks, my poor little Powerbook has lost its mind. I keep having Kernel panics for no apparent reason. Here's the story so far:
    1. I upgraded to Leopard (archive/install) from Tiger, in November.
    2. In early January, I had at least one kernel panic. Not sure what happened. By the middle of January, I had 3 or 4, and on (about) the 15th, I had three kernel panics in the span of an hour - and the lower ram card wasn't being recognized. I took it to the Apple store, where the tech said that it was the infamous "lower ram-slot issue" that plague my model Powerbook.
    3. Once I got the powerbook back from the shop, it seemed to work quite well - fast, stable, panic-free. This week, however, I've had at least 6 or 7 kernel panics - at least 4 of them in the last 24 hours. A few of these weren't the usual "you need to restart your mac" window, but rather a long list of console-like text from the BSD subsystem itself
    It seems to be related to the software - or perhaps Dashboard. Dashboard client has been running out of control this week - and started to go nuts about when the kernel panics started to occur. In fact, one of these "BSD" panics said that the dashboard client hung the computer. Thus, I moved all of my user (non-apple) widgets out of the library folder - effectively removing them from dashboard. This has prevented dashboard client from going nuts, but hasn't stopped the kenel panics. The ones that have occurred since seem to occur when using Safari or MS Word 2004, and one (another BSD panic) said that Window Server hung.
    I've repaired permissions many times, used Disk Utility to verify the boot volume (it was OK), and zapped the PRAM and PMU - no luck.
    I've had some other hardware and software issues:
    First, Spotlight crashes when I attempt to search for something with a common name and have my 4 external hard drives attached... (One with Time Machine backups, one with other backups, and the rest with large volumes of video editing files). This issue probably isn't related to the kernel panic issue though, since it only occurs if I spotlight gets really bogged down - say, I search on "mac" and get 5000 returns...
    Sometimes, if I have the power adapter plugged in and then boot up or wake the Mac, it sometimes won't recognize the adapter and thus run off battery. The solution? Unplug the adapter from the Mac and the wall, then plug both sides in. This occurs at least once a day, having become a much worse issue since sending it into Apple. This makes me think that I may have a issue with the power supply system in the Powerbook, and may be one of the causes of the panics. Again, zapping the PMU and PRAM, hasn't helped. Nor has deleting every power-related plist file.
    The ram issue seems to have stopped, and I'm not sure the power issue could cause this - so I don't know what to do about this. It's happening a lot, but it's not exactly predictable - it would be difficult to reproduce for the Mac Genius, should I run to the Apple store. Since I suspect it's a software issue, I'm also not sure they can do anything about it. If Apple can't do anything about it, I plan on doing an Erase-install of Leopard, then carefully installing software - one thing at a time - to see if I can find the culprit. If worst comes to worst, I'll downgrade to Tiger...
    So then, the questions, summed up are:
    1. Do you have any idea what could be going on?
    2. Can apple do anything about a software-related kernel panic issue?
    3. If Apple can't fix it, and an erase-install won't work, when else can I try?
    Sorry for the long post, and thanks a bunch for the help, I appreciate it.

    K, well i'll try to find the log on the backup clone I made - the Powerbook is currently in the Apple store for diagnostics. Hopefully, then can figure out what the deal is, but it will likely require an archive/install.
    When I was there, he opened one of the logs in console - and it showed literally thousands of errors - all from "kernel". Wow, i have no idea what happened. He said that it may be bit-rot on the part of some of my applications, but there's probably not much they can do if it's not a hardware problem. sigh
    Anyway, I'll look for the log on the backup volume when I get a chance. Thanks, I suppose you're right about you being forced to guess without the log. Didn't think about that... O:-)

  • Wireless issue, not sure what to do...

    Hi all,
    Seen lots of notes on here about wireless problems and seen many answers ranging from "roll back to 1.5.1" to "buy a new router", etc. All go advice I'm sure, but I would like to hear what you folks think of my issue and if there is an answer that I missed that could help me.
    The problem is with my 17in Powerbook G4. It's a little over 3 years old (read:just out of Applecare), and before upgrading to Leopard the wireless worked beautifully with my linksys router at home, the wireless at work, at school and on the road.
    However... when I upgraded to Leopard I noticed it seemed... flakey. When I updated to 5.2 it has become almost unbearably bad. It connects about 90% of the time to my home network with no problem, my school network often takes several computer restarts before it will even SEE the network, let alone join it which can be a 20 minute process of clicking the network, watching it do nothing, repeating for a while until it eventually connects.
    Work is very similar to school.
    So what I am pondering is, is this a Leopard problem? Is it a wireless card problem? Something I don't even know about?
    The solutions I see are:
    1) Roll back, possibly to Tiger? BTMM doesn't work (well it did until 5.2, now it NEVER works on ANY network) and that was the main reason I bought Leopard).
    2) Get a new wireless card? Would this cost me an arm and a leg without Applecare?
    3) Something I don't know?
    Any help would be very much appreciated, I am at my wits end, my work productivity and school productivity are down and I find that I swear much more often than I used to, and as a student in Seminary it's frowned on to say the least;) Plus it looks bad to all the windows people who connect with ease and my poor Mac is struggling to even see that network!
    Anyway, thanks in advance, I am going to post this in the powerbook forums in case it's a powerbook issue instead of a Leopard issue, but I tend to think it is the latter.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi.
    I don't think its a hardware issue. It seems to be some network settings getting corrupted.
    Well, lets try these steps and see how it works.
    Create New Location:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8322.html
    Zap the PRAM:
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    Good Luck

  • I was experiencing an issue with an app, I deleted, re-installed, and now the app is downloading brand new.  All of my progress is lost.  In itunes it says the app was created and modified the day i tried uninstalling.  Im at a loss, any suggestions?

    I have tried all of the support tips, and am now trying to contact the developers of the app.  I am a little frustrated because I have been playing about a year.  So when I open the app after I deleted it I start out brand new.  So I started a new ID and I looked up my old app ID and I can see the progress of my previous game before the delete but there is no possible way for me to play the app under that ID now.  From all the forums I have read this is impossible because you are not supposed to be able to reset the app from one device.  TaDa!  Leave it to me to be the only one.  I am in limbo waiting on the app developers to get back with me.  Who knows how long that will be...  Not sure if I am making any sense because I have never had this happen before.

    Lord K.  Thank you. Yes I am within the 90 time period, however I travel Intertionally and I can not receive not make a call to Apple. I was just at the Genius Bar in Chicago and they said, don't worry about it.  It just floats out there, however, I can not recover my messages on a flash drive. I need to go back to my old computer which I don't have with me.  My messages were in folders for a lawsuit.  It is going to take an incredible amount of work for me to, you have no Idea.  We are talking thousands of pages!  I the defendent will have them during discovery so I am not so worried.  However, I can not bring them to him on a Flashdrive when I meet with him without an extraordinary amount of presssure on my part.  THis is not just some little email issue. This is suing EXPEDIA and Tripadviosr.com
