Little rant: -only- PS is rebooting my pc

Hi all,
I must vent this to get it off my chest, and to see if there will be more constructive comments than I found on this list.
I'm running a W7x64 pc, with 8Gb of Ram on a AMD X6/Gigabyte combo. My graphics card is a Geforce 9800GTX, and I use a Wacom Intuos 4.
All of this stuff is supported by CS4 and CS5.
All of my apps, including some heavy duty 3D apps and render-engines, video-editing software and some audio applications stress my system on a daily basis without even blinking. For rendering 3D images or sequences it's no exception most of the RAM is taken most of the time.
But Photoshop, CS4 (x32 or x64), or even CS 5(x64) that I downloaded as a trial, will crash my pc on a regular basis. Heck even d&d'ing a layer from one image to another will do this, or scaling, or saving, or just moving the mouse....
Why is it that all my other apps run flawlessly, but when PS is mentioned, the forums can only state, bad mobo, bad RAM, bad GPU, old drivers... Over and over again.
This holds no water when all -other- apps that pound on my system will work just fine!!
And yes, the renderengines and 3D apps rely heavily on the OpenGL engine on the graphic card as well for GUI or texture memory.
And yes, I run all the latest drivers for the hardware, mobo, graphics, wacom etc. etc. as always opted in the replies. And no, so far this hasn't helped a bit.
I'm not the only one that came across this serious annoyance, and it has costed me countless hours -and- corrupted PS files.
I was hoping it was a CS 4 flaw, as previous versions of PS always ran fine. I'm suspecting PS CS4/5 is doing some weird OpenGL stuff under the hood.
Are there any other tips than, reset your prefs, update your drivers, reinstall PS, turn off all OpenGL in PS, buy a new pc?
<rant off, feels good >.
But seriously, looking at the huge amount of people having issues with this, I can use any little tip here.

It certainly looks as though you've been thorough in your investigation.
I'd say at this point that there is some driver level issue that's causing your system problem.  It's actually pretty difficult for an application to crash Windows (crashing the application alone is another story).
It's possible that your video or tablet or even disk drivers simply have a latent bug in them that causes the problem.
Another area of software that can trash the system is the anti-virus / anti-malware / security software that you may have.
There is even hardware to consider...  Photoshop may be heating up your video card, for example, in ways that other apps don't.
I guess I'd advise these things:  Continue scour the Windows logs for further clues, and then to actively pursue a possible problem I think I'd eliminate major parts of the software.  You could, for example, very carefully try running your system without some of the major parts you have installed - e.g., after having removed whatever anti-virus software you are running.  You could also try downgrading to earlier video drivers, or even trying a different video card to see if the problem is changed.
The freeware tool AutoRuns can help you know all of the software you have starting on your system.
All I can offer is this in encouragement:  There are those of us who have absolutely stable Windows 7 x64 systems that run Photoshop all month without system trouble.  So it IS possible.
Best of luck.

  • Just a little rant... :(

    Hello,
Little rant against SAP about the translation of the name of a product...
In "SAP BI" Windows starting menu, for a french installation, when I saw for the 1st time a module called "Mettre à niveau l'outil de gestion", I couldn't help thinking/saying :
I've finally discovered it's "Upgrade Management Tool" !
French is my native language and I can tell you that the french translation is actually ridiculous !
I would suggest : "Outil de gestion de mise à jour"
    Regards,
    Stéphane.

    Bonjour Petit
How about "Mise à niveau l'outil de gestion"
But I think you should raise this on "https://ideas.sap.com/"
If SAP finds this is useful and needs to be rectified they'll surely take a note of this.
    Cheers,
    Nikhil

  • ITunes won't sync (after "upgrading" to Lion because my four year old macBook can't use Mtn. Lion) With a little ranting sprinkled in.

I hope someone out there has the expertise to tell me what I am doing wrong. I expect a learning curve from a new Mac operating system, but I don't expect weeks of problem solving and glitches. Lion...well, they won't let me use that word.
Since I "upgraded" to Lion, when I hit "sync" in iTunes on the computer, I get one of three things:  1. Nothing happens, or:  2. A message appears that there is not sufficient room on the Nano for the changes, which is not true, or:  3. It syncs down to next to nothing on the Nano and I have to hit revert.
Sometimes I'm confronted with a screen that wants me to check or uncheck each and every album (but not songs) that I want synced. I have already kept up to date a more specific and complete list of the same sort elsewhere in iTunes: the "Music" list in my itunes "Library." Today I unchecked some songs and checked some others expecting to easily have the corresponding changes made on my iPod, as I have for years.  This is the list that I have refined over the years based on new music acquired, my changing tastes, and room left on the iPod.  Am I really expected to duplicate this process on another list only to end up with no options for individual songs I do, or do not, want synced? What is the purpose of this exercise?
I finally got it to upgrade to iTunes 10.6.3.  I was repeatedly getting a message in iTunes that there was an upgrade available. I would hit upgrade within that mesage in iTunes.  It would go through the process of checking for new software and then tell me my software was up to date. (I was running iTunes 10.6 (40).) Software update also told me my software was up to date. I had to go to the Apple site to find and download and install iTunes 10.6.3. The change made no difference to the above problem. I'm not used to screw-ups like this from Apple.
I can't think of a single change in Lion that I like. Not one. I hate the new calendar. I hate the new Safari, and I hate the new Mail. I hate the combination of Google search and the address bar.  I hate the way hiting a hot link in Mail opens a new tab in Safari instead of a new window. And the number of hassles and fixes and problems to be solved in the move from Snow Leopard to Lion has been like nothing I have experienced before on a Mac.
An iMac and a laptop are not iOS devices. And iPads and iPhones are not laptops or desktops. To try to merge the operating systems is a major error in my opinion. Thanks for putting up with my rant. I never expected to be so frustrated by a Mac "upgrade."  And I've been using Macs a log time. Any advise would be apreaciated.
    "Shinwell Johnson"

In lieu of relaxing on Sunday, I've been working on this.
I tried launching Thunderbird (TB) in TB's "Safe Mode".  This launches TB like it's being used for the first time - and it didn't crash, which got me hopeful.
So I deleted the TB profile folder and the TB preference file from the ~/Library folder.  Then I manually copied them over from my old Mac to my new Mac - figuring that maybe something got damaged by Migration Assistant.  After I installed all of the TB files and folders into the right places in my ~/Library folder, I rebooted the Mac (just to be safe) and tried to launch TB - and it crashed upon launching, with essentially the same crash log as shown above.
So it looks like there is something in my TB Profile that Lion doesn't like (but that Snow Leopard was fine with).
Any suggestions for how to find and fix/remove the offending item?  Is there something I could search for in the crash log that would point me to the offending item?

  • HP Laserjet Pro 1525nw Only Prints After Reboot

Our office recently purchased the HP Laserjet Pro 1525nw, originally we installed it wirelessly but it would only print some of the time or from certain programs. So we added the USB cable and reinstalled the driver to reflect the change and it seemed to be working fine. But recently its stopped printing entirely unless we reboot the computer.
The computer is on a network and some of the files we print are on the network, which is one theory we've had as to why the computer might not be communicating with the printer. But this seems a little strange or like it shouldn't be happening.
Any ideas or similar experiences where someone may have found a solution would be appreciated.
    Details:
    Windows 7 Pro

    Hello,
You indicated that the computer is on the network but the printer is connected locally, correct?  You may be right in your theory in that the network documents were created with another printer installed.  Just for testing purposes, grab one of those documents, copy and paste it into a new document and select the HP 1525nw printer as the destination printer.  (file/print)  As far as the wireless issue, depending on the document being printed, it may be the same issue.  It's looking at a different printer..  I've also pasted a link below that may assist with some of your t-shooting steps.  Good Luck!

  • Voicemails Only Display After Reboot

I've read about people having issues with delayed voicemail, but this is a little different.
I work in an area where I lose signal in certain parts of a building. If someone were to call me while I had no signal and leave a voicemail, I don't get the voicemail when I come back into coverage. The only way I can get the new voicemail notification is to reboot the phone. It's not that there is just a delay. If I don't reboot my phone for a day, it won't get the new VM until a day later.
I don't have any problems with delayed VM as long as I have signal.
I've tried resetting network settings, all settings, and even wiping the phone. Any ideas or is this just an iPhone OS issue?

    Hi svs1234,
I've experienced this problem. Resetting the print system fixed the issue.
Open System Preferences, then select Print & Fax
Control-click or right-click in the Printers box on the left and select "Reset Printing System"
    Click "OK"
Click the "+" button at the bottom to add your printer again.
Hopefully, you will be good to go.

  • Files don't open or will only open 'Read Only'. Server reboot resolves issue for 1 day

    Greetings!
We have a SharePoint 2010 Foundation server that I recently inherited. I'm a novice at SharePoint, but let me cut to the chase.
Users have recently (within the last week) started experiencing a problem where if they open a file, it will error either saying that the file cannot be opened, or it will only open in read only. This occurs with Excel, Word, Power Point docs. They CAN however,
open and edit these documents in the browser with web apps. After launching the full office application, if they click 'Edit Document', it will appear to switch to editable mode, but the title bar will still contain 'Read Only' and they can't save changes
directly back and are forced to do a 'Save As'. The only thing I have been able to do to remedy this is to quiesce the server and reboot it. After reboot, it will work until something magical happens overnight and it's broken again the next morning. I'm trying
to hunt down what this magical event is but could use some help.
Note that after I reboot the server, users can access and modify normally, no rebooting of workstations or closing of any applications (including the browser that's already on SharePoint) for it to start working, so I believe we can eliminate an endpoint
    issue.
    Server Specs:
VMWare VM version 9 (VMTools up-to-date)
    16GB RAM
    250GB HDD
    2x vCPU
Windows 2008 R2 (latest updates installed)
SQL DB Hosted remote on a SQL 2008 R2 server running on Windows 2008 R2. The SQL database is set up in a mirror configuration.
I'm sure I missed a lot of pertinent information but want to get something out there. Thanks in advance.

There are warnings that repeat every ~1hour and one critical that occurs daily. Under each error, I added notes of what I've done to remedy.

  • How do I get a service to be enabled only on a reboot?

    Hi!
Here's what I'm trying to do:
I have a transient service, which makes configuration changes on the system early in the boot process. However, when I install(import in SMF) this service on a system, I do not want it to run right then as it is too late to make those configuration changes on a running system. I only want it to run at boot time on the next reboot.
    Options I've considered:
    Option A:
    1. Create a manifest with create_default_instance_enabled=true
    2. Put my xml file in /var/svc/manifest/site/mysvc.xml
I do not want to import this at install time. On first reboot, it picked it up. After that, during testing, I deleted it from the repository, left the service in /var/svc/manifest/site/mysvc.xml, and rebooted, SMF didn't pick it up.
    Option B:
If I instead have a manifest with create_default_instance_enabled=false, and import this.. How do I then make SMF create an instance of this service ONLY at boot time.
I've seen other posts which talk about putting your manifest in /var/svc/manifest/site/mysvc.xml or in /var/svc/profile/site.xml. I'm not sure what the difference is between these 2. Unfortunately, I haven't found any documentation on this.
I'd greatly appreciate some pointers on getting this right.
    Thanks!!

haven't found any documentation on this. The first is for your manifest. That describes your service. You'll notice that most sun services are not enabled in the manfest.
The second is a profile. A profile is brought in usually at first boot to configure a system. It may enable or disable services. Notice that there are two "generic" profiles. One turns on most things, one keeps a lot of stuff turned off.
There are 3 site profiles that can be brought in automatically: generic, platform, and site. You can create a site.xml and the first boot that finds it will load it. So at jumpstart time you can put manifests you need in the manifest area and enable/disable what you want by the site.xml.
If you use a site.xml at jumpstart time, you can't use it later to modify things.

  • Printer only prints after reboot

I have connected an HP printer to my iMac via USB but it will only print after I reboot the iMac. It used to work fine. Where should I begin looking for the solution?

    Hi svs1234,
I've experienced this problem.

  • USB Port only works on Reboot

I've been trying to put some files onto Thumbdrives, and my external hard drive, but My Mac won't recognize them when I plug them in. It will, however, recognize them when I reboot.
When I plug one of the two in I get a screen that says
"A storage volume is attempting to mount on your computer. Do you want to allow this volume to mount?"
    I always click Allow
Then another screen pops up saying "InternetCleanupAgent requires that you type your password."
I type in the password and push ok. All the screens go away, and usually this is when my USB would pop up on the desktop, only now...it doesn't.

If you can't solve your issue and no one in the community can help, contact support to speak with a tech support agent at (800) 457-7777.

  • USB external audio only works after reboot

I have a EMU 0202 USB soundcard in order to be able to hear sound in my late 2008 macbook (because the mini-jack from the headphones broke inside the laptop. but this is another story). The problem is that in order for the laptop to detect this soundcard I have to reboot OSX. If I disconnect the soundcard and connect it again, it won't be detected until I reboot my computer again. Thing is I'm tired of rebooting so often just to have sound. Do you have any idea on why is my Macbook only able to detect the soundcard when booting or how could I fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

I see the latest driver is from 2008 (http://www.emu.com/support/files/download3.asp?Centric=1005&Platform=2&File=596), and is supporting Leopard. Perhaps the driver is not fully compliant with Snow Leopard...? Try uninstalling your driver, and installing the one mentioned, and if that does not work, try contacting EMU.
    Kind regards:
    Espen.

  • Time machine error 21 only cured by rebooting Airport Extreme

I have a macbook pro 13" (2009 vintage), and an airport extreme.  Despite the fact that Apple says that it doesn't officially support Time machine backups to AE connected disks, I've been doing this since early 2010 (when I bought the AE).  Starting about 6 months later after one of the updates to the firmware, every few days Time Machine would fail saying that another application already had the backup files.  Nothing I did on the macbook cured this, but I discovered that doing a power cycle of the AE would cure it for a few days.  This was annoying, but I was able to live with that.  However, with the update to 7.5 firmware this started happening every few hours.  I talked to Apple Care support and they suggested that I have the hardware of the AE checked out at an apple store.  I did that, and they said that the old one was defective, and gave me a brand new AE (last week).  RIght after that, it wanted to install 7.6.  Well since then, I can do one backup on the disk.  After that, when I try to do another backup I get the dreaded "error 21".  However, if I power cycle the AE, things then work again.  This tells me that there's a software bug on AE, which, I suspect was introduced in version 7, and has only gotten worse.  Even if I don't try to do TM backups, after a few days I can't connect to the disks at all until I power cycle the AE.  Anyone else have a problem like this?  I wish that I could get Apple to consider that this is really a problem.  If I could disassemble the firmware, I could look for the problem myself.

I cannot tell you why your Apple Genius told you what he did, but he/she was dead wrong. Apple sells its Time Capsule product, so they are not interested in making the AEBS a product competitor.
I will give you a little secret for which you will forever be indebted to me.
Open your Terminal application in the Utilities folder and at the prompt enter or paste the following command pressing RETURN after:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Miraculously your problem will be Solved.

  • Sqr's quit running - only solution is reboot of windows server

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this problem. Our SQR's, crystals, NVisions randomly quit running and the only solution is to reboot the windows server. We are pt 8.49.05, and fins 9.0. Stopping/starting apps, prcs servers do not fix the problem. Nor, does clearing cache. Any suggestions?

I think we found the problem. We have processes to print and reprint invoices. When the invoices are done, they are ftp'd to another server. the ftp.txt file that houses the ftp commands, did not have the bye command in it and therefore never returned to the .bat file that kicked it off. Over the course of a few days, we would end up with several cmd.exe and ftp.exe and of course the old' acrord32.exe processes that did not get killed. We moved the bye command into the .txt file, and now all we have to do is find a way to kill that acrord32.exe cleanly after invoices are reprinted. Thank you all for your suggestions.

  • High system CPU usage only recoverable by rebooting

    Hi,
I'm having this problem since I started using my new iMac 27'. Before that I was using the same version of OSX (10.6.1) in the MacbookPro without this issue.
So it's being hard to reproduce the problem, but suddenly there is a spike in CPU usage from System Processes (on average 40-50% if "% System" in the Activity Monitor), but strangely when I choose to show only system processes, there's no process that is actually using that amount of CPU. And the system gets REALLY slow.
While trying to reproduce the problem, I rebooted and started iTunes. And it happened. Even after closing iTunes the high "ghost" CPU usage gets really high and never recovers unless I reboot.
Is anyone else having similar issues?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Don't limit it to System Processes. There's often too much interaction between user and system processes. Choose either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes.+
You probably want to select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ from the menubar, too, both so you can read the screen and so Activity Monitor itself won't take up too much CPU. Then sort the list by the +% CPU+ column so the largest numbers are on top.
Watch it for a while. Many processes will "spike" up and down normally, as they do something, then go idle.
And the system gets REALLY slow.
That's when you need to see what the top one or two processes are.
If you see +Process Names+ you don't recognize, post them here or consult http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all

  • ITunes in Windows PC only launches at reboot does not recognize iPod touch

I have had this problem for sometime, but have lived with it. I have my iPod touch 1G connected to a Windows XP PC for syncing charging etc. If I unplug the iPod touch and use it for a while not connected to the PC and then plug in into the USB port, iTunes does not recognize the touch and I have to do a complete reboot of the windows PC. Is there a work around for this problem?

iTunes does not recognize the touch and I have to do a complete reboot of the windows PC
Is windows freezing for you undr those circumstances, or is something a bit different going on? (If you're getting an error message, let us know what it says.)

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 only prints after reboot of my iMac

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 (A909a).  Not wireless.  After I reboot my iMac it'll print for a short period of time, thereafter it will not print or scan unless I reboot.  Typical scenario is that I send something to print.  After 40 minutes + nothing.  I reboot and it starts to print after the chime but before I sign into my account.
Why is this happening?  Can anyone help?
    Scott

I installed the update from HP and haven't had any problems since!
