Little things about your ibook.

I am off to college next year. so i am saving up for a laptop, right now it is a toss up between the highest config of ibook (14")and powerbook (17"). now i can afford the powerbook but it would mean getting a part tiem job during the year to save up the £1700 (student discount), i wouldnt mind getting a job its just that my grades might suffer... on the other hand i could easily afford n ibbok within one year with my pocket money. i dont know how to decide so i thought i would decide using the tiny features not mentioned in the description like tha apple logo lighting up, are there any other for either powerbook and ibook?
I guess what i am asking what are the (good, no trolls)little quirks of you ibook / powerbook, it is after all the tiny stuff and attention to detail that differentiates a quality product from a dell

i I was tihnking of upgrading the RAM from crucial but know nothing about the internals of a pc so was too squemish, does this mena the RAM is easy to install, just pop it in?
Shut down and remove battery. There's a little keyboard locking screw next to the NUM LOCK key. You give it a 180 deg rotation in either direction, and it pulls in a tab that keeps the keyboard from lifting. The latest one may not go down all the way (at least mine doesn't) but you can get the keyboard out. There are little spring-loaded tabs next to esc and F12. Pull them in and lift the keyboard up. The RAM shield will require a high-quality #0 Phillips screwdriver to remove. I stress high quality because a poorly made one could damage the screw heads. The screws are "captive" and shouldn't come off the shield. Once you have that off, it's easy to drop in a new PC2700 SODIMM. Touch any metal part to more or less discharge static. Place the SODIMM in at a 30 degree angle and press in gently until it goes in all the way. Finally push down on the SODIMM until the two metal tabs lock into the notches on the module. Put everything back in place. This is one of the easier things to do, and nearly impossible to lose a part.
The pictures in the following are of an older model iBook G4 with an AirPort Extreme card. The new ones don't have that but are otherwise similar.

  • What is your favorite thing about your new MacBook?

I have yet to receive my MacBook and was wondering what everyones favorite thing about the system was? The screen? A specific software title included? The overall design of the system? What do you think, be as specific as you' like...
Apple Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Sony Vaio - Windows XP Media Center

The macbook is my 6th mac laptop. I like the magnetic power supply and magnetic closing. The built-in cam is great and it's wonderful to have a remote to use with music or presentations. I thought I would be unhappy with the glossy screen but I ordered anyway. I was totally wrong, the screen is very bright, unlike other gloss laptop screens I've sceen on Dell models. I was suprised when I was able to use it outside and still see everything clearly. My powerbook 17s' screen disappered when you stepped outside.
What I don't like is that the keyboard isn't illuminated. Especially since my model is black.. And no firewire 800 port, come on! Would it hurt to put a 128mb graphics card in too? The only other thing I don't like is the fact that I had to send mine back for a replacement. Weird harware issues DOA..

  • What other little things about the iPod I should know about?

    Just a quick question,
What are some of the features of the iPod Touch that are not 100% obvious?
    Example...
Yesterday I found out that you could pull up the music controls anywhere(even locked) by pressing the "home" button twice.
After finding the above by accident, I was thinking about if their was any other little hidden things to find.
    --Daniel L

    1. Watch quicktime supported videos (via safari) (3GP, MPEG-4 etc)
    2. Play podcasts/mp3 (via safari)
    3. When viewing photos tilt the screen and right when the screen is adjusting touch it and the photo will stay like that

  • Little things dent your confidence...

    Importing.
Trying to import from a 32 GB CF card - I have maybe 6 different days shooting on it.
Have tried to import selected batches of photos to separate projects relevant to the day taken.
In theory I have imported all projects but have about 20 files that keep showing as unimported despite having don't import duplicates listed.
They are movs from a Canon 5D II
I've restarted Aperture and the same bunch of files will import again to a project (duplicates) and still remain listed for import.
I don't know what's causing this but it dents my confidence in Aperture's file handling capability/library integrity - I've not seen it before.
    Any ideas?
I've had to force quit once or twice with the latest update too.

    Hi Ernie
I've never encountered this before which is why it's baffling me (and I do delete the odd photo/video from time to time in camera).
Just to clarify I am not seeing this behaviour if I try to import the images from a disk based copy as they are recognised as already imported.
Could it be something to do with manually selecting images and importing rather than letting Aperture autosplit?

The system doesn’t recognize or capitalize the word (I) or the first word of every sentence. Another really annoying thing about the integrated mail on your Mac computers is the fact that the system learns the word as you type it more and more instead of highlighting it as incorrectly is this is a word that’s being misspelled. Can Apple fix this bug to make it user friendly as if you were using Office or a Word Document?

    You hit the target CT.
It’s only fair that if Apple is going to integrate Mail into Mac PCs, it would be nice if the system does it for you like Office or perhaps Outlook. I just don’t to use Outlook although I have it installed and ready to use, but instead use Mail which comes with Mac OS already.
I hope to make some sense here.

All you can do is call the service provider that phone was being used with to cancel the phone account at least.
However, if you did not have a passcode lock on it, then the person with it has access to everything on it.  You should immediately change all your email account passwords, and any other online account's passwords you used or had set up on the phone.
There is nothing you can do remotely to the phone now, and even cancelling the phone service account will not stop someone from using your emails and such on wifi.  Changing your account passwords will lock them out of your accounts.

  • Faithful old ibook G4-how is your ibook?

    hi
just wondered how many years everyones had their ibook G4? and do you still use it?
Ive had mine originally 2003 when it blew up JUST out of warranty..:( cd rom also went....it was the 933mhz (i think), it was a low spec at the time...
ANYway...after MUCH hassle, it got replaced 2004 and i still have it, still use it..dispite having the MBP and I have the old Quicksilver to....
I think il always love the ibook..the replacement was the 1.2gb * again im crap at recalling figures*..it was slightly better than the previous ibook spec.
its 14.1 tft and runs 10.5.8 tiger. it runs CS and Final Cut Epxress and ive no issues with it...fingers crossed..no screen replacement, or logic board fail...
it is a little slow at times....youtube streaming is good and some days quite crappy..
I dont know anyone who had an ibook...only me and my uni friend. His one burned out..
Just curious about other ibook users....
the keys have worn down a bit so ive just bought new ones..to replace the old ones..i guess to preserve it as it gets older then eventually blows up or burns out. I doubt il use it when the screen goes....its expensive to replace ....
I am VERY impressed at how long this little machine has lasted....aww
I think im turning into a mac collector hehe so want a black macbook refurb yay.
    so yeah....how is your ibook?

My iBook G4 melted in a house fire in June of 2010.
The last time I tried it, it still booted.
I still use my iBook G3 (Dual USB) 800 MHz (Mac OS X 10.3.9) occasionally, but mostly to help people out here when I don't remember something about the iBook or the older OS. We have two 500 MHz iBook G3s, too, which don't get a lot of use.
I say that we are the retirement home for old Macs, ha-ha.

  • Can you sell adverts into your iBook?

Does anyone know whether you're allowed to sell adverts into your iBook? And if so, is there a revenue share with Apple?

    FuzzyMemes wrote:
Mmm. Not exactly the revolutionary step forward in publishing that we were hoping for then.
Just on a personal level, I'm not sure that I want to see ads being part of the publishing revolution. As far as I am concerned, a book without ads is just as I like it.
Reinventing the publishing model involves repairing the broken revenue model, not just offering a new way of reslicing the same old ever-shrinking pie! Thanks for the advice
I'm looking forward to seeing how this entire market shapes up. There is new ground being broken on just about a daily basis. Traditional publishing as we know it will largely head the way of the dodo. (Just think about where CDs were ten years ago and where they are now.) In the process, people will try lots of different things. It'll be really interesting to see which models survive.
Judging by previous experience, such as free Internet connections in return for having to watch ads, I don't expect a publishing model that is driven by ad revenue to be successful. But time may well prove me wrong…

The DVD recorder I'm referring to is one I've use for years. It is not attached to my aging iMac in any way. I simply play the video from my camcorder (mini-dv tape based Canon HV20)  into the DVD recorder and create a DVD that can be played in any DVD player. I can only do minimum editing so what goes in is what I get. This has been fine for creating dupes of the various things I shoot.
If I buy a new iMac (21 inch), I'd like to be able to download the video to the iMac through iMovie, work with it to whatever degree I wish, and burn it to a DVD that can also be played in any DVD player -- or to use as a master to dupe copies.
What I'm understanding from you and others is that this would be possible if Apple had included iDVD in the software that comes with the iMac, or if I purchase the iLife Family Pack, or buy the correct version of Toast. I'm hoping I can persuade Apple to sell me an iMac with iDVD installed.
Essentially I want to move from a basic process of creating DVD copies to the more sophisticated process of creating one from an iMac.
Thank you again for your help and wisdom.

  • Goodbye BT - It's the little things

Its the little things that matter so much. Like not sending you your introductory voucher, sending you promises it will be in the post. Putting up prices arbitrarily. **bleep** you off the most. Charging if you don't pay direct debit and then helping yourself. Adding a couple of quid for paper billing and going e-mail without your consent. Telephone help in India where the people works-in-dark-in-early-hours-of-the-morning-very-helpful-to-tell-you-what-I-am-reading-off-the-scre...en. Raising the prices again. Giving you the opportunity to subscribe to special offer discount that isn't and tie you into a new contract for 24 months. Minefield of options when you call then hangs up after ad nauseam please-hold Smetana's Má vlast. Goodbye BT. I hope it is the last. FFFFFFFF-rown. Disconnect fee. Keeping paid in advance charges. Not our policy to give you a refund. Now you see the cockroaches in the contract. Pull the plug and leave you high and dry. Deny you pulled the plug and keep the billing going - that's Technical We're accounts. It shows you are still contact on our computer. We must be right. It is the little things.

    Spot on JSTTESCONET !
The only thing I'd disagree with you about is these are Big things not Little things.
It must be so depressing working for BT and knowing that they have such an appalling reputation. My heart goes out to their employees who need a job but can't find another employer.

  • Can i know some thing about unicode errors

can i know some thing about unicode errors

    Hi,
UCCCHECK is to check if all your programs are UNICODE compatiable.
    Now UNICODE means
    Unicode - Overview
Before release 6.10, SAP supported different codes for representing characters of different fonts, for example ASCII, EBCDIC as single-byte code pages or double-bytecode pages:
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) encodes every character with one byte. This means that a maximum of 256 characters can be displayed (strictly speaking, standard ASCII only encodes one character using 7 bit and can therefore only represent 128 characters. The extension to 8 bit is introduced with ISO-8859). Examples of common code pages are ISO-8859-1 for Western European, or ISO-8859-5 for Cyrillic fonts.
EBCDIC (Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange) also encodes each character using one byte, and can therefore also represent 256 characters. For example,EBCDIC 0697/0500 is an IBM format that has been used on the AS400 platform for Western European fonts.
Double byte code pages require between 1 and 2 bytes per character. This enables the representation of 65,536 characters, of which only 10,000 to 15,000 characters are normally used. For example, the code page SJIS is used for Japanese and BIG5 for traditional Chinese fonts.
Using these character sets, all languages can be handled individually in one ABAP-based SAP system. Difficulties arise if texts from different incompatible character sets are mixed in one central system. The exchange of data between systems with incompatible character sets can also lead to problems.
The solution to this problem is the use of a character set that includes all characters at once. This is realized by Unicode Unicode (ISO/IEC 10646) . A variety of Unicode character representations is possible for the Unicode character set, for example UTF, in which a character can occupy between one and four bytes.
From release 6.10, the SAP NetWeaver Application Server supports both Unicode and non-Unicode systems. Non-Unicode systems are conventional ABAP systems, in which one character is usually represented by one byte. Unicode systems are ABAP systems that are based on a Unicode character set and which have a corresponding underlying operating system, including a database.
Before release 6.10, many ABAP programming methods were based on the fact that one character corresponds to one byte. Before a system is converted to Unicode, ABAP programs must therefore be modified at all points where an explicit or implicit assumption is made about the internal length of a character.
ABAP supports this conversion using new syntax rules and new language constructs, whereby emphasis was placed on retaining as much of the existing source code as possible. As a preparation for the conversion to Unicode - but also independently of whether a system will actually be converted to Unicode - the checkbox Unicode checks active can be selected in the program properties. The transaction UCCHECK supports the activation of this check for existing programs. If this property is set, the program is identified as a Unicode program. In a Unicode program, an additional stricter syntax check is performed than in non-Unicode programs. In some cases, statements must also be enhanced by using new additions. A syntactically correct Unicode program will normally run with the same semantics and the same results in Unicode and non-Unicode systems. (Exceptions to this rule are low-level programs that query and evaluate the number of bytes per character). Programs that are required to run in both systems should therefore also be tested on both platforms.
In a Unicode system, only Unicode programs can be executed. Before converting to a Unicode system, the profile parameter abap/unicode_check should be set to "ON" so that only the execution of Unicode programs is permitted. Non-Unicode programs can only be executed in non-Unicode systems. All language constructs that have been introduced for Unicode programs can, however, also be used in non-Unicode programs.
It has been established that existing programs that have been programmed with no errors mostly fulfill the new Unicode rules and therefore require very little modification. Conversely, most programs that require significant changes are due to an error-prone and therefore questionable programming style. Even if you are not planning a conversion to a Unicode system, Unicode programs are preferable because they are more easily maintained and less prone to errors. Just as outdated and dangerous language constructs are declared obsolete and are no longer permitted for use in ABAP Objects, the rules for Unicode programs also offer increased security when programming, for example when working with character fields and mixed structures. This applies particularly for the storage of external data (for example using the file interface), which has been completely reviewed for use in Unicode programs. When creating a new program, SAP therefore recommends that you always identify the program as a Unicode program, and older programs can be converted to Unicode in stages.
    Regards,
    Shakir

  • The thread for good things about Premiere CC

I know that people will use these forums to communicate complaints about the new Preimere CC, or to ask questions about things that have changed and become confusing.  People who are happy with the new software, however, may not be inclined to start a new thread to say so.  So this thread is specifically for communicating things about Premiere CC that are noticablely better than in earlier versions.  I, for one, need this information as much as the criticism in making my decision about whether to upgrade or not.
    J. D.

There are lots of things to like about PPro CC. However, I do believe it's important to know of the issues that may affect your particular workflow before you update. You can look at their product page and see all the great new features in action in their tutorial videos, but only in this forum will you hear if they have issues or not. Sometimes looking at a forum like this makes you think that the program is totally screwed...but most forums can make you feel that way. My experience is a fairly positive one but with one big setback.
    LOTS TO LIKE:
If you have CS6, I think it depends on your workflow and what you use Premiere for which should determine whether it's wise for you to update at this point. You can always download the trial and see what you think. They made many awesome improvements to the editing "finesse" as they like to call it. Things like through-edits, paste attributes, easily expandable (with one scroll) and solo-able audio tracks are nice combined with bigger features like the added "looks", wider GPU support, and audio clip mixer (although, can you undo if you mess up with that mixer?). Honestly there are so many other little things they tweaked and improved that many go almost unnoticed. Long time FCP7 users like myself really enjoyed many of the updates.
    THINGS TO BE AWARE OF:
Three things however, after just one week, stand out to me as either confusing, or completely unacceptible based on my personal experience:
    1) Multicam is essentially broken. If it's important to you, I recommend you wait until it's fixed. Sure, you can do it, but be aware of the issue with re-doing any of it before you start. As people have said in previous posts, it's great that you can now stop/pause/forward/rewind without it making a cut on a timeline during a multicam edit. I also like that the audio meters now work while editing multicam. But just know there is a new bigger issue with CC Multicam that, if you are not aware of it, can set you back hours and hours:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1236698?tstart=0
    2) Be aware that Encore is not included with the new CC update. It's a bit perplexing why they did this but you can just download (or keep installed) Encore CS6 and all will be fine. Moving away from DVD/Bluray disc creation over time is fine, but cutting the ties now is makes about as much sense to me as if they only allowed Premiere editors to edit 4k footage and nothing else. Oh well, at least you can use CS6.
    3) One other post (#20) here mentioned "appearance" issues with PPro CC. I agree with his assessment but I'll take it one step futher. I think the dark background looks so cool on these programs...BUT... editing 10 hours a day 6 days a week with white letters on a dark background can start to kill my eyes so in CS6 I switched "appearances" and made it a light background. Not as cool, but it worked better for me. Problem solved! The problem with Premiere Pro CC is that, unlike in CS6, making the background lighter ONLY adjusts the background BUT the rest of the clips and markings don't adjust to make it usable. What do I mean? Try this...on CS6 go to Preferences>Appearance and make the background light. Now in your source/program monitor, mark and in and out point. Notice how the selected area is now light blue and visable against the light background. Now try that same thing in Premiere Pro CC, and you'll realize that the same selected area did not adjust to the changing of the appearance and it remains light colored and disappears into the background now. Bizzare. Small issue I guess in the grand scheme of things, but still, an important design element that became worse, not better, coming from CS6.
I'm a fan of Creative Cloud. I realize all new software will have it's bugs. But I do get nervous at the thought of this program updating often and bugs as big as the multicam bug being overlooked prior to a public release. Personally, I'd rather they wait and fix it first when it's that big.

  • HT5085 Gathering Info About your iTunes Library - Keep getting Network error

I bought iTunes Match yesterday, and so far have not been able to use it.
It gets to Stage 1: Gathering Info About Your iTunes Library and makes progress, but right at the end an error box appears saying:
"We could not complete your iTunes request. The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again"
Well I know the network connection is active as I was able to be charged for iTunes Match and have had no problems making other purchases. I went to Advance > Run Diagnostics Tests from Help in iTunes and ran the Network Connectivity Diagnostics and it reported no problems.
Now I know how much Apple hate giving back refunds, but if people can't help, does anyone know how I can get my money back? If I click "Report a Problem" it simply takes me to the help pages. I tried contacting support but I received an email saying they can't help.

@ deggie, I wasn't threatening ANYONE. I was simply saying how frustrating this has become, seeing how I have been trying on my own to figure this issue out for more then a month with no results. Like I said in the beginning, I have not used any other account to purchase apps or other products on my phone. I have only ever used one account. There are 23 apps that are saying they can't sync. It directs me to authorize the computer, which I do but it doesn't change the outcome. If I proceed, I lose those 23 apps correct? Do I also lose all my text messages saved, and other things such as documents in the "notes"?
