Live! 24b external: static and restart/disconn

I've got Sound Blaster Li've! 24-bit External, DR release .0.2
I have the following setup: Laptop->SB->AV Recei'ver (through SPDIF). SB worked fine with my Acer laptop. However, now I got a second laptop Toshiba Satellite LS25-S9 and I have huge problem. I have updated the drivers to the latest versions - still the same.
When playing music (any player), there is a static (like electric discharges) are heard every other second. After playing for some time (always different - from 5 to 25 seconds) and after one of these discharges the card goes off - no ligh showing the device is ON, no sound. If I restart player, the sound comes back, but still with the static. Lights on the device don't come back unless I restart laptop. They also came back during driver update. Anyway, after some time of playing without lights on the device the unit restarts again (sound disapears and light from the optical output goes off and then on again).
Please, help.

is anyone out there? this product is S@#%, as with the pcmcia version of the audigy 2zs. absolutely bulls@$&. and why does the card act as if theres power in it, but isnt working (red light is on in the optical out port, but the green/blue are out) 2 products failing for laptops, making me think that theres nothing in terms of improved audio for laptop users...
if anyone can recommend me a GOOD and RELIABLE laptop solution, id be very appreciati've

  • When MagSafe unplugged, the external display and laptop need to be restart

Whenever I unplug my MagSafe when using dual-monitors, my MacBook and External monitor need to turned off/restarted. Why is this?

So, you're saying that when you disconnect the power cord (MagSafe) BOTH of your displays either go completely dark while the MacBook is still running or freeze (static image, nothing gets updated) or begin to display distorted video. Then when the displays enter one of these states they remain dysfunctional until you power cycle each one (which would mean that for the MacBook's display you'd have to restart the MacBook). Otherwise, are you suggesting that your MacBook crashes when you disconnect the MagSafe? Also, do you have to reconnect the MagSafe before you can restart the displays (if this is the case, then are you sure that your battery just isn't "dead")?
What type of connector are you using for the external display? Is it Mini DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA? If DVI, is it dual-link?
In any case, without additional details I'd guess that you have a grounding problem between your external display and the MacBook. This shouldn't happen unless there is a problem with your video cables or adapters or with the ports on either the MacBook or your external display. Have you tried connecting the 3.5mm audio output on your MacBook to an audio input on the external display (as a test to provide another grounding path)? Also, is your MacBook power supply plugged into the same AC outlet as is your external display?
I guess the MagSafe connector could also be at fault if it is shorting to ground when you remove it from the port on the MacBook. What happens if you disconnect the power supply directly from the AC plug and then disconnect the MagSafe?
Lastly, is there any chance that you are getting a static electric discharge when you touch the MacBook to remove the MagSafe connector?

    I wouldn't trust that backup.

Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

  • Using iMac as external display from Macbook Pro flickers static and crackles.

I'm trying to use my iMac as an external display.
When I plug in my early 2011 Macbook Pro into my Mid 2010 iMac via a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, the iMac screen flickers with static and there's random crackling noises.
Weird thing is, when I try the same thing with a new Macbook Air, everything works perfectly!
    Here's a quick video demonstrating what I'm talking about - http://youtu.be/xxTXVRffWwE
Are the two not compatible or do I just have a defective Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro works fine with the Cinema Display I have in the office...

Huh, It should work like this:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    iMac Model
    Cable Supported
    Port on Source Computer
    iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
    Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
    Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"
Does that seem contradictory to you?

  • I am unable to use my external CD player. I am told that the player is being used by another application, and that is not true. I have quit everything and restarted. I've unplugged the unit. I have a fairly new mac mini 10.8. What can I do?

I am unable to use my external CD player. I have a fairly new mac mini 10.8. I am told that the player is being used by another application, but it's not true. I've forced everything to quit and restarted. I've even unplugged the unit and let it rest. I've turned off and unplugged the mac too. I cannot make a CD. Why?

I misread your message. I thought it said I did not have burn support with the Samsung hardware.
When the CD goes in it says You inserted a bland CD. choose an action from the popup menu or click ignore
    open finder
    open itunes
    open disk utility
    make this action the default
    eject         ignore           ok
However, when I am making CDs. I am in itunes. That is where my recordings areI haven't tried to do it from this vantage point.
I don't know how to make a screen shot on a mac.
I go to my playlist and click on the little gear icon at the bottom left and I leave things as they are - preferred speed - maximum. I leave it on audio CD - and then I select BURN.
When I tried this the other day, I could not get it to burn, no matter how hard I tried - everything I could think of, using a different CD, force quitting everything I was not using, restarting the computer, unplugging the CD hardware and plugging it back in after a little while, nothing worked. I got that message that said my player was being used by another application every time I tried to make the CD.  This took over an hour. I don't know of another way to make a CD on the mac; I was not using another program or application. Now it seems to be working fine. I am burning another copy of something I gave away.
I wish I knew what caused this. It was a real problem Saturday morning.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • Static during playback of voice recorded through external mic and mixer

I have an external mixer plugged into my USB and sound quality is great playing through mixer (listening through headphones plugged into the mixer) but when I record and playback of through GarageBand I hear lots of static and clicking sounds. I hear the static whether I play through my external speakers or headphones hooked up to my iMac.
I set up a new Real Instrument > Vocals > No Effects
    Input: Channel 1
    Format: Mono
    Monitor: Off
When I use the Cubase software that shipped with the mixer, to record and playback, the sound quality is fine playing through the computer

    TotallyLee wrote:
It happens even in a brand new project. I have an empty project apart from 1 track with the mic as an input. No plug ins or anything on it. I've tried the same switching the mic for a guitar with no problem. The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.
It might also help if you posted a screen shot of logic's Audio preferences.

;SB Li've ! 24 bit external USB and windows seven blue screen+ hi! i have installed windows seven 64 bit build 7600 RTM on my PC and i wanted to install also my USB sound card which is SB Li've ! 24 bit and i downloaded the beta drivers from creative. instalation was really fast and smooth but at the end i've got a message that the program has stopped to response and i have closed it. i did a system reboot and i have seen that the sound card has been installes succesfull and also the control panel. Sound was clear and really nice, all worked fine but sometimes im getting a blue screen on my windows with a code STOP 0x000000E and then a file named usbuhc.sys was the problem. i think that the sound card is the thing that is doing the blue screen becouse i have only a keyboard, mouse and the sound card SB Li've ! installed as USB.
Is it normal that i have those troubles on my PC ? is it my sound card my windows seven problem ? what should i do now ?
at the moment i have turned off the sound card so i will see if i get a blue screen or not.

  • Western Digital External Drive and a VERY slow computer. Is my HD failing?

Hello, thank you for looking at my question.
First off, I am NOT very tech-savvy, but I'm willing to research and learn, I'm just afraid to make a mistake and blow up my computer.
I have had my Macbook for 2 years. I have not backed up my hard drive during that time. Bad, I know.
Recently I've noticed my Mac getting slow with the "spinning beach ball" showing up more often and everything getting slower. Usually a reboot will help. Yesterday, for the first time, the reboot took about 8-10 minutes! I figured that wasn't a good sign, so I headed down and picked up an external hard drive (Western Digital Essential model, 1TB) and figured I'd back everything up. I formatted the drive according to the Mac partition model (tech support from WD helped over the phone) and got it going. From 1530 to 0800 this morning, of 52 GB it had only backed up 15.3 GB. The fan was running at high speed the entire afternoon and night. That's about one GB per hour. Is that normal?? Then, it froze and wouldn't respond, or back up at all. Just nothing. I held the power button down and restarted it.
At this point, I am concerned that perhaps the hard drive is failing (hence the speed and fan issues) and that maybe I should be taking it in to a repair shop (we don't live anywhere near an Apple store)
Do you think this may be the case? Is there any way to back up my hard drive faster - before it dies? I have two years worth of photos and papers, etc on there, music and such and it would be a tremendous loss if it all crashed.

Good! Better to inquire than leap!

    Yup.

    No, not normal at all.

As slow as that backup was, anything else will be nearly as bad.
There are four common causes of this:
Your startup drive is nearly full (less than a couple of GBs of free space). If that's the case, find something big you can "archive" to CD/DVD or copy to the external HD and delete.
    The drive is failing.
Corrupted directores, etc., in the file system
One or more "runaway" processes, usually from incompletely-installed or partially-deleted apps
    |
It's a toss-up; try to diagnose what's wrong, or try to get a backup.
The fastest way to back up, with the least "thrashing" of your hard drive, would be to start up from your Leopard Install disc and use the Restore tab to make a copy of your internal HD on the external.
That will copy any file system problems "as is," but if your internal HD is beginning to fail, at least you'll have a full copy of the data (corrupted or not) on the external HD.
Check this to be sure your WD drive will boot your Mac: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787 If not, do all the steps below except #4.
    Here's what I'd recommend:
    1. Start up from your Install disc, per the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]
    2. Reformat the external HD, with a single partition, per the blue box there. You'll want the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ Format and either the GUID or +Apple Partition Map+ *Partition Map Scheme* as detailed there.
    3. Use the Restore tab to copy your internal HD (almost certainly named +Macintosh HD)+ to the external HD, per #7 in the link above. Note that will copy the name of the internal HD to the external.
    4. When that's done, quit Disk Utility, then select +Startup Disk+ from the Utilities menu in the menubar (per the yellow box above). Select the external HD and start up from it.
    |
The copy may take a very long time. There will be a progress bar, but they're notoriously inaccurate under the best of circumstances. If it completes, and you can start up from the external, post back and we'll see if we can find the problem, and either fix it or confirm that you need to take it to Apple.

  • Pavilion dv7-4285dx: cannot BOOT/POST to external VGA and internal LCD is dead (cracked)

I have cracked the screen of my HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx so badly that I cannot read anything on it. I am trying to boot to an external monitor on VGA port, but never get a signal.
I have tried the monitor switching key, but that doesn't do anything. I have tried disconnecting the internal LCD from the motherboard - no different. I have tried a CMOS reset by removing the laptop battery, removing CMOS battery, disconnecting power supply and holding power button down for >1 minute, then restarting with just external LCD attached, but STILL no video on VGA port.
The video adapter is okay, as it boots to Windows and then I have video on the external monitor.
Although it's good that I can use the ext. monitor once Windows boots, I need to have video at boot time to make changes to BIOS.
Does anyone have another suggestion of how I can get the BIOS to detect and display to external VGA at boot time?

  • Probems with external monitor and Nvidia Ion on Netbook

After I updated yesterday, I can't use my external monitor properly anymore. Before, I only had to plug in a monitor and everything worked fine, now everything is displayed twice, on both monitors simultaneously.
I tried using nvidia-settings to change the settings, which told me
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.  Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
, but after running nvidia-xconfig, xserver didn't start anymore, so I deleted the file that had been created.
Now I don't know where (and to what) to change my settings so I can use my external monitor again.

Reposting from AskDifferent forum. If you have the newer MBA that include USB 3.0 ports, you are in luck. There are now USB 3.0 to GigE adaptors, freeing you to use the Thuderbolt port for external display.

  • Taking the plunge - external drive and exclamation points

    Okay...
I have cried for help on this forum before about the somewhat common problem of iTunes 7 having a strange relationship with music on my external drive. The drive in question is a Lacie 250 GB Firewire drive.
A few months ago, out of the blue, one day I opened iTunes to find a sea of exclamation points. Though all the music I had added after a particular date was there, most of the music I had added prior to that was tagged with the exclamation. When I'd try to play one of these songs, iTunes would say it could not be found, though I could manually locate it and things would work fine. I tried a few fixes recommended on this forum by well-meaning but misguided people that resulted in a few sets of duplicate playlists but no fix to the problem. Then, one day, out of the blue again...it started working fine.
I don't even recall having restarted the computer. iTunes had just fixed the problem somehow.
Well, now the problem is back, and I've dealt with it for about a month. But I'm not convinced that it will just go away this time. So, even if I destroy my painstakingly cultivated hundreds of playlists, ratings, play history and comprehensive information (artwork, composer, etc.), I am determined to fix this problem without manually locating over 10,000 songs.
I am posting my attempts here as a record that will hopefully help those struggling with this problem in the future. Though I would welcome any and all comments or questions, I have frankly come to expect very little assistance or even the willingness to assist from this forum (that is to say, I imagine my unresolved question will languish for awhile as a monologue until I either fix the problem or die).
The first thing I will do (after doing a final backup, of course) is to determine whether it makes a difference if an updated version of my iTunes library file and .xml are in the Music folder (on my hard drive) or in my Musica folder (on the external drive). The latest edition of the file is currently on the external drive.
    So, here we go...
    Grant
Dual 1GHz G4, 1G RAM, 80G HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iPod (1st Gen), iPod Shuffle (1st Gen), iPod Mini, External HD

Well, I've made quite a mess of things. So I have 14,000 songs. Most were added years ago. Looking at the date added in correlation with the exclamation points, it seems as though iTunes forgot the location of most of the songs added before 5/9/06. Mind you, iTunes worked fine (with the exception of doing this whole thing once before) until about a month ago. So, in May 2007, iTunes forgot most of what happened before 5/9/06.
(For reference purposes, the gap seems to exist between two songs I downloaded. "Help Me, Ronda" by the Beach Boys is the last song with an exclamation point in the date added list (see two exceptions below). "Proud Mary" by Ike & Tina Turner, on the other hand, is exclamation point free and only a couple of songs added after "Proud Mary" have exclamation points. They are:
Freedom, by Richie Havens, added 6/3/06.
Slow Free Bird, by Geesekey, added 12/17/06, a song I made in Garageband.
Now, don't let me give you the impression that there is a solid wall of exclamation points up to "Help Me, Rhonda." Maybe about every 10/20 songs, there is a song with no exclamation point that plays fine. Following Jase's lead before (his advice to another user), I have investigated some of these songs that work fine, but can't find any reason why these work and others don't (any difference in the iTunes Library.xml, files created with/without track number, etc.).
So, here's what happened in the past couple of days: I dragged my "iTunes Music" folder (located in my "Musica" folder on the external drive) into the iTunes source list). Most everything was duplicated, with the new songs playing just fine but lacking ratings and play history. Also, the new songs were not included on any playlists.
What I did next was poorly executed. I sorted iTunes by the Date Added and selected the first few thousand (roughly, A-J; seeing them according to the Date Added reveal that they weren't added in exactly a linear fashion). I hit the delete button and selected "Remove", but I then told iTunes to "Move to Trash." What I should have done, I imagine, is told iTunes to "Keep Files". So, my A-J songs are now deleted off the External Drive and gone (though I have backup DVDs generated by the iTunes "Back up to Disc" feature).
What should I do next? is the pressing question. Should I rip everything out and start from scratch with my backup discs? I guess the question I would have with that approach is this: if I restore from backup discs made three months ago, will I still have all my playlists, ratings and play history as they were when I made the backup? If that's the case, that'd be fine with me...I just want to make sure that's what will happen. Also, I have a backup of my iTunes Library file before I've done all this crazy stuff of the past few days, so if that enters into the equation, let me know.
Otherwise, let me address your comments, Jase.
Anyway, here's a question. Can you export your
playlists, even though they're made up of songs with
exclamation marks? If so, you could try exporting one
of them as an XML file. Then import it--you'll
probably wind up with duplicates (playlists, not
songs). Does the newly imported playlist play, or
does it still have the exclamation mark problem? I
wouldn't know what to expect, but it might be worth a
    try.
My playlists themselves are all still the same as they were (though there are exclamation marks all over the place). From what I can tell, they look fine when exported to an .xml (the music folder seems to have the correct path). When I import it, it's the same deal: exclamation points at the same places.
If your playlists are exportable, you might want to
export them to XML files, just so you'll have those
little databases of them. Then, if worse came to
worse and you had to give up on your current Library
file and reload your Music folder into a new library,
at least there's a chance you could import your
playlists and not have to build them again from
scratch (assuming nothing has changed in terms of the
    organization of your Music folder).
I'm not willing to export every playlist, because I have hundreds and it would just take too long. Is there a way to export all or a lot of playlists at once? Anyway, I figured that my playlist data was stored somehow in the iTunes Library file, so I felt I had a backup already. I could be wrong about this, though, as I really don't understand much about the iTunes Library file and .xml and the like.
Can you drag songs that have exclamation marks into a
playlist? Somehow, I doubt it. But if you can, you
could use new playlists to make a record of some
information that you might want to save if you had to
start all over again with a new Library.
Believe it or not, I can add songs with an exclamation point into playlists and they're added just fine (though, they still have the exclamation point). How this works is: I can't drag and drop them into a playlist. However, I can control-click and select "Add to Playlist" and it works. There's another mystery for you.
Have you looked at your iTunes Library.xml file --
specifically at the location information for
individual songs -- to see if the location
information exactly matches the information you see
in the Finder? I have found mismatches when
investigating some exclamation marked files. I didn't
know how that happened, and I didn't know what to
about it, but it was intriguing to see evidence of
    some iTunes mischief.
Is the iTunes feature to start music file names with
the track number turned on? To my mind, fewer missing
song file problems occur when this is on.
Yes and yes. Based on what you told others, I have looked at the .xml of some of the problem songs and the working ones and could find no difference, but I didn't really know what I was supposed to be looking for. I also use the Add Track Number feature and always have.
If you still have the 28,000 songs in your Library
and want to go back to the 14,000, you could sort all
your songs by Date Added and delete the ones you
added on June 21. Or, if you saved a copy of your
iTunes Library file before you dragged your iTunes
Music folder into the library, you could just throw
out the more recent Library file and reinstitute the
    back-up copy.
I probably should have done the latter (just restore the backup of the iTunes Library file). Oh well...
Some advice for future experiments. Try them with a
small sample if possible unless you're absolutely
sure they will work the way you want them to. For
example, drag one album in your Music folder into
iTunes rather than the whole Music folder.
This is a great idea. I wish I would have checked my sample more closely or done more tests before I plunged off the cliff.
Back up your iTunes Library file, as well as your
Music folder. (You might already do this.)
    Check.
Those are a few things to think about. They probably
will not be helpful. Like I said, I don't think there
are clear answers to this problem. The best I can
wish for you is that iTunes will magically fix the
problem, like it did once before. Then, maybe there
are some preventive measures you can take.
Since iTunes did fix it once before, I would not
throw your current iTunes Library file away, no
matter what. If you decide to start a new library so
that you can actually listen to your music, rename
this Library file and keep it around, since it has a
lot of your metadata in it. You can try it every now
and then and see if iTunes spontaneously revives it.

i use an external HD and thats fine.. all files are in there.  But I have no idea why my itunes app is getting stuck.
Am I the only person this is happening to? What can I do to correct this problem?
