Live Capture from GL2 Camera via Firewire

Image quality when capturing live video into iMovie from a Canon GL2 is very very grainy and poor quality. It used to work fine capturing into iMovie HD, but that no longer works correctly with Snow Leopard (transport controls and other buttons don't show up). The footage is totally unusable.
I've heard that image quality in iMovie is a bit less than FCE, but this is no minor difference. Is there a setting that should be changed?

t used to work fine capturing into iMovie HD
iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
iMovie 06 (iMovie HD) uses ALL of the image to form the video.
no longer works correctly with Snow Leopard (transport controls and other buttons don't show up).
I use both iMovie 09 and iMovie 06 with OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). (But when I need better quality I use iMovie 06.)
I've heard that image quality in iMovie is a bit less than FCE, but this is no minor difference.
iMovie 06 and FCE have the same image quality. iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' so you have a bit lower quality.
Is there a setting that should be changed?
No.

  • Live Capture with a camera via firewire and usb audio interface

I am trying to do a live capture through Final Cut 7.
I want the video feed through the firewire from my HVX200 and the audio feed from a 4 channel usb audio interface (Alesis iO4).
When I have both audio and video input coming in from the HVX200, the live capture works fine.
However, when I change the audio input so that it is coming from the usb audio interface, final cut has an error message saying "Video is not available."
During the preview, I see the video clearly and am getting levels from the iO4.
But when I try to capture, I get the error message.
Is it a processor issue (I've attached my specs below) with problems handling 2 separate inputs?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi MtD,
Yes I am changing the Capture preset to iO4.  Once that happens, it lets me run both the camera and the iO4 into the laptop but then an error message pops up the moment I try to capture it.
I was only trying to use 3 out of the 4 channels of the iO4.
    Thanks!

  • Live Capture from Video Mixer

I'm having a problem with getting my Powerbook to communicate with my Videonics MXPro Dv digital video switcher. The switcher has firewire out which works when I connect to a camera but I can't get Final Cut 5 to connect with it. I have set up my device setting as non-controllable but with no success. I am trying to capture SD footage of school musical. Any thoughts?

    Additional thoughts...
If you have a DV camera/deck, I'd try to use that instead of the Canopus. This way, you could record to tape what you're capturing live.
Granted, there is timecode differences between the two, but it serves as a backup, should the live capture fail. (and trust me, it will at some point...Mr. Murphy says so)
For our workflow, we do a couple of things...for mission critical events, we ISO record to tape in each camera and to a Deck (live to tape), as well as the live capture into FCP.
We then capture all tapes and cut shows from that. This way, we have DV recorded quality from camera tapes, along with proper timecode, which comes in handy, should we ever have to revisit the project. (the live capture becomes our redundant backup recording, which we dump after the show is a lock)
For non-mission critical, we just record the live cut to the deck, along with the live capture into FCP. We can cut from either, then we can dump the live captures from the drives (saving valuable disk space) and still have tape backup to re-cut if needed.

  • Connecting DV camera via firewire disconnects external firewire drive

All of a sudden this has started happening.
When i connect my video camera via firewire to my external Lacie harddrive, and turn the camera on, the drive I have it connected to goes off line. A window come up saying 'Device Removal'. When I disconnect the camera, the drive comes back online.
I have 4 drives connected inline and it happens to any one of them, whichever I attach the firewire to.
I trashed FCP permissions, but that didn't help. I'm running FCPHD 4.5.
    Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4 15 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Its the canon camera. Firewire and canon cameras apparently don't play in the same sandbox very well. All macs have only one firewire bus. For a macbook pro you can use an express card slot, but the imac's you are kinda stuck. The best course of action is to copy to hard drive and then move it within imovie. I read this in Tom Wolksy's book on FCE. It is weird. I have a Sony HDV and an older imac and i can use one firewire port for importing and go straight to an external firewire drive--no problem. However, in his book on page 56. It states the firewire issue. I know this is an imovie forum, but i can assume its also the same for imovie.

  • Capturing live Video From DV Camera

I Tried to capture a church service using iMovie. I Expected multiple files because of the file size limit and imovie braking up the file. I also assumed that these files butt seamlessly together, but to my surprise they do not. How can i get a hour+ of continues live video recorded?

Please note that I don't believe your camera will put out a proper full-resolution, full-quality HD signal via HDMI while in record mode. DSLR cameras are notorius for not allowing you to fully turn off info overlays on the HDMI output, or even if you can on your particular camera, the output signal is somewhat cropped or otherwise not a proper HD signal.
We're a reseller of the Atomos Ninja portable recorders and this has been a huge issue - DSLR shooters want to use Ninja for the exact purpose you mention, for long, uninterrupted recordings, but the HDMI outputs from those cameras are just not suitable.
Do this - connect the HDMI out from your camera to an HD display and start recording with the camera. Do you get a perfect, full-screen image without any overlays or any cropping, and at full quality? My understanding is that they all "dumb-down" the output signal in some regard while recording, unlike video cameras that will all put out a perfect HD image. The only 2 DSLRs that I'm aware of with "clean" output are the Panasonic Lumix GH2, and the new Nikon D4.
As mentioned, even if a DSLR camera will put out a good image, you will need a "capture device" with HDMI input such as BMD Intensity or Matrox MXO2 Mini connected to Mac or PC.

  • Displaying fullscreen images from camera via firewire

I have clients that want to be able to see the image I take with my camera instantly after I take it. So I hook my camera to my MacBook Pro via firewire, take the shot at the camera and then I WANT the image to appear full screen or close to full screen size on my laptop. I had one poster on another forum say that Aperture can do this. I can't figure out how. Any ideas?

You can absolutely do this - although depending on your camera it might more likely be via USB. What you're describing is tethered shooting. I do it all the time with my D300 and it works perfectly. You can set yourself up in fullscreen mode and watch your pictures come up within a few seconds of shooting.
If your camera is supported you simply plug it in (via usb or firewire - usually usb), select File>Tether>Start Session and you're ready.
When I'm shooting still life, I like to fire a shot or two, do a few quick adjustments to get the look I'm after and stamp the keepers as I go along and refine the setup. It's a great way to get a real feel for what you're attempting.
There's a list of supported cameras on the Aperture site- I don't have the link handy though.
    Good luck!

  • Using Flash Media Live Encoder with a camera without FireWire

    Hi,
Right now we have beeing using an old DV tape based camera connected to Flash Media Live Encoder via FireWire for live streaming.
We are looking at getting either an Sony AX2000 or HXR-NX5U camera as they are flash based. Unfortunately, they don't have FireWire ports.I image that I would not be able to stream via USB, but I'm not sure if anyone is familar with either of these cameras.
Does anyone know of any posisble way (ideally without new equipment) that this would work?
    Ports on the HXR-NX5U
Audio Out      RCA type (CH-1, CH-2)
Component Out     RCA type (x3) via A/V multi connector
Composite Video Out     RCA type (x1)
    S-Video Out     N/A (optional VMC-15FS is required.)
    SDI Out     BNC (x1)
    HD-SDI/SD-SDI selectable
    USB     Mini-B (x1)
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi there,
You may be able to take the RCA connection out of the new camera and put it in to your old DV camera if it has the avaliable inputs?
Also, USB is sometimes used for video so I woul have a look around for some info about it with your camera.
failing that your best bet would be to either buy a cheap Aanlog to Digital Concerter (ADC) that takes in composite and firewire on the RCAs. this woul mean that you are using the lowest quality and resolution that is avaliabe to you though!
You could stump up of an SDI or HDSDI input from the likes of AJA or Blackmagic. this would also give you the digitised XLR audio inputs
    Hope this helps!

  • Capturing from FW - Camera Crashes FCPE and Quicktime

I just upgraded from my MacMini (my first) to this PowerMac Dc2.3 to do some video editing. I have Quicktime 7.03 and FCPE, and a Sony DVCamcorder connected via firewire. I also have a couple FW400 Harddrives and a FW800 drive connected.
If I try to record using Quicktime, it crashes. If I try to capture in FCPE, it crashes. iMovie captures fine. I had checked out another thread where some folks were having problems with camera recognition and tried some of the suggestions, but this only temporarily fixed the problem. After uninstallng and reinstalling a number of times, I discovered that every time I deleted the Library>Quicktime directory and then reinstalled, it would work. I then used my Eskape Labs myTV.PVR and it went through the install process like it did when I first installed it. Now Quicktime and FCPE again crash.
I drag the file: TrinityVDIG.component which was installed by the myTV.PVR installation from the Library>Quicktime directory to the desktop. This fixed the problem: Quicktime and FCPE once again work. If I put TrinityVDIG.component back, they break once again. The problem is clearly not with Quicktime or FCPE, but with this component that hooks into Quicktime.
So when doing capturing, I just drag the component to the desktop and then drag it back when I want to watch TV. I also tried leaving the component in the Library>Quicktime directory and just unplugging the myTV.PVR device, this works, but the initialization of the capture is very slow compared to if you just remove the TrinityVDIG.component.
I am going to try to send this to the Eskape people and hopefully they will produce a compatible component.
I hope this might help some that are having a problem.
    Ed Cross

i am having the same problem, except when i try to open it using itunes it also closes down and gives me that error message. I also tried opening the files with nero and the problem occurs there also. i wish there was a fix for this because quicktime 6 worked great.

  • Color Balance Issue importing from DV Deck Via Firewire...

The fact that searching google and this formum has lead to me finding NO results, I am wondering whether anyone has or is experiencing similar issues..
For some time now, I have been having this issue, which I just realized is not normal. I have a Sony DV Cam Deck which I use to import via Firewire to Premiere CS5.5. Attached to the Sony Deck I also have a small monitor connected to the composite video output.
The color and white balance look fine on the small monitor, however on the import via firewire, there is tinge through it almost like an incorrect white balance.
YES, I have calibrated and Re-Calibrated my Computer monitors using Spyder3 and when viewing photos and other video not imported through the deck, the color is great.. .It is NOT a problem with the Deck because the SAME thing happens with a friends Deck. I am just using the standard Firewire import on the ASUS Motherboard, although I do have a Blackmagic Studio2 card. This does not really come into it during firewire import....
As I said, now that I realized, this has been happening for 2 years or more. I was always color correcting the camera mans footage thinking his whitebalance was out, but after now attaching an external monitor to the Deck whilst firewire import, I notice the color is fine on the monitor. I am in PAL land Australia, but it happens with NTSC footage as well...
Anyone ever experienced this or know of this issue????
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks Tony.

The footage is mainly from the same camera, although occasionally I edit two camera shoots so the other camera is a different model, but this also has a different colour balance after imported.. I have used two identical Sony decks, and my latest acquirsition is a Sony HDV Deck that will natuarally play both. I get the same results from all three decks.
Yes I have rendered footage with no correction or effects and watched it back on a Sony TV/Monitor. Colour is out.
I suppose the tinge looks exactly like an incorrect colour temperature setting, but i know it is correct because when I playback the deck directly into a TV through composite it is fine. Example Warm tone Beige Curtains in a Reception Center look like they have a bad green Cast. Skin tones are no where near natural, again a green cast. I am not sure what is going on..
But yes, it has been there for a couple of years and it just hit me like a tone of bricks after getting this new deck. On previous decks, I never had a monitor connected to the composite and only monitored through the firewire so I always assumed the colour white balance on the cameramans camera is out. WHen I set this deck up, I put a montior on the composite. Yesterday as I was importing source footage, I glanced over and it amazed me to see that the composite monitor on the deck had beautiful rich acurate colour on it, whilst what was coming in on the pc screen, even after playing it back on the TV/Monitor, was horrible.
So I thought, Hell all these years I have been spending hours colour correcting footage that was ok to start with but lost somting in the transfer?? HOW?? I haven't got a clue.. It really doesnt make sence and I am still trying different experiments. I am now going to import through the component and svideo outputs of the deck, to see what results I get... I will post that later.. Thank you all.

  • TS3899 When's ending videos from the camera via email, they go to the out box.  How do I successfully send them.  I used to be able to do so but not for some time.

How do I send a video from the camera's video via email?  When trying to do so, they go to the out box.  Me email server is earthlink.  Any help will be appreciated.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.
