Live Capture from Video Mixer
I'm having a problem with getting my Powerbook to communicate with my Videonics MXPro Dv digital video switcher. The switcher has firewire out which works when I connect to a camera but I can't get Final Cut 5 to connect with it. I have set up my device setting as non-controllable but with no success. I am trying to capture SD footage of school musical. Any thoughts?
Additional thoughts...
If you have a DV camera/deck, I'd try to use that instead of the Canopus. This way, you could record to tape what you're capturing live.
Granted, there is timecode differences between the two, but it serves as a backup, should the live capture fail. (and trust me, it will at some point...Mr. Murphy says so)
For our workflow, we do a couple of things...for mission critical events, we ISO record to tape in each camera and to a Deck (live to tape), as well as the live capture into FCP.
We then capture all tapes and cut shows from that. This way, we have DV recorded quality from camera tapes, along with proper timecode, which comes in handy, should we ever have to revisit the project. (the live capture becomes our redundant backup recording, which we dump after the show is a lock)
For non-mission critical, we just record the live cut to the deck, along with the live capture into FCP. We can cut from either, then we can dump the live captures from the drives (saving valuable disk space) and still have tape backup to re-cut if needed.

Live Streaming from Video File
Hi everyone,,, im newbie in programming streaming video with flash....ater reading documentations i tried the instructions on doc, i got a question that i've not been solved. How to make a "live streaming" from "video file". It likes a live streaming from camera but it uses video file as the source.... many thanks
Do you mean you have video file but you want to publish it as live stream , am i right? If yes following is the solution, but before that let me clarify you will need server to do it , i mean there is no way Flash client (i.e. .swf file running in Flash Player) can publish file from local disk.
Now let me tell you how to do it from server:
Place your video file under "streams" folder of your application i.e. say "myVideo.flv" under <FMS root>/applications/myApp/streams/_definst_
Now write following code in your main.asc file (this file would be under <FMS root>/applications/myApp )
var mystream;
application.onAppStart = function(){
mystream = Stream.get("livestream");
mystream.play("myVideo",0,-1,true);
This will publish "myVideo" file as live stream under name of "livestream". Client would have to subscriber using NetStream and
use ns.play("livestream",-1,-1)
You might have to write some extra code if you want to loop same file else once play of recorded file gets over , live publish will automatically stop.
let me know if this solves your problem -
History of images "captured" from video
Usually when you import an image, in the History panel you find the first entry states when it was imported eg. "Import (date time)"
Could we have something the same in the History panel for images captured from video? At present there is nothing there when you first check it out and you can't truely go back to the start (unless you managed to remember to take a snapshot before you touch a slider.)
I'm using the Windows 32 bit version. The above issue is consistent with both the DSLR (Canon 5D II) and normal video I borrowed from my Dad.Hi Sarah,
Good idea. I can't promise you anything on this one but I'll raise it with the team. -
Taking screen captures from video
I have a video on iphoto and i want to know if there is a way to save screen captures from that video. Thank you
With "Grab" you can capture the screen, a window, a section, or a timed screen.
You will find "Grab" in Applications -> Utilities.
Just start "Grab", and then in iPhoto navigate your video to the frame you want to capture, then take the screen shot. -

Live Capture from GL2 Camera via Firewire
Image quality when capturing live video into iMovie from a Canon GL2 is very very grainy and poor quality. It used to work fine capturing into iMovie HD, but that no longer works correctly with Snow Leopard (transport controls and other buttons don't show up). The footage is totally unusable.
I've heard that image quality in iMovie is a bit less than FCE, but this is no minor difference. Is there a setting that should be changed?t used to work fine capturing into iMovie HD
iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
iMovie 06 (iMovie HD) uses ALL of the image to form the video.
no longer works correctly with Snow Leopard (transport controls and other buttons don't show up).
I use both iMovie 09 and iMovie 06 with OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). (But when I need better quality I use iMovie 06.)
I've heard that image quality in iMovie is a bit less than FCE, but this is no minor difference.
iMovie 06 and FCE have the same image quality. iMovie 09 uses 'single field processing' so you have a bit lower quality.
Is there a setting that should be changed?

Live capturing from Panasonic AG-HVX200 using Final Cut and MacBook Pro
Does anyone know if the MacBoko Pro using Final Cut can capture live 1080i video from a Panasonic AG-HVX200 to an external firewire hard drive?
Great info. I'll get on those other forums.
Not that it is an 'issue,' but to answer the question I was INITIALLY thinking of getting a laptop just to capture video, and edit on my desktop. But I see that the advice of getting the biggest baddest laptop would be a better idea and I've read others say that being able to edit 'on the road,' is a great potential.
I checked out the only tested and approved by Panasonic Firestore and it's the FOCUS FS-100 that comes standard with a 100GB hard drive that provides 1.5 hours of DVCPRO HD recording time with a list price of $2,195.00.
(If using PAL, you need the PAL version)
Other than the valuable other forums mentioned here, I found a good site for FAQ's for the Mac/AG-HVX-200/FCP, at: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/faq/p2faq .htm
These FAQ's, above, say that "going directly into a PC is possible, but it may fail to record some frames per second. This depends on the performance of PC. So we do not recommend this method."
There is a rebate if buying the USA warrentied camera before the end of the year: a free 8GB P2 card (advertised as a $1,200 value)
I think this answers all my questions about this topic. Thanks everyone for the info and the patience.
P.S. - There is a free contest, BTW, to win the biggest badest laptop, the 17"-MacBook Pro, at http://www.pcmag.com (of all places!) -
Direct Still Image capture from video
How would I capture a still image with a firewire connection from a camcorder capturing all the pixels from that image. I was hoping to use Image Capture or Quicktime but I have not found a solution.
The solution needs to be apple scriptable.
Thanks,
DrewYou could use iMovie to "copy" a frame. A DV camera would be 720X480 image.
QuickTime Pro could also be used as it supports Firewire connected cameras and has a "Record" feature.
Simply pause or stop capture and scrub through (right left arrow keys) to find your frame. Copy, open new Player window and paste. Export to Picture and choose your format.
QuickTime has an AppleScript library. iMovie does not.

Still Capture from Video Footage - How?
Can I capture a frame in a movie and turn it into a snapshot?
You are most welcome.
The Adobe forums function on several levels:
First, posters present their questions, or problems, and hopefully get answers, or solutions.
Next, others come to the forums, and Search for their question, or problem, hoping to find an answer/solution, before posting
Then, others just read the forums (after trying to answer others' questions, that is my next most common action), trying to learn even more
The second is one reason to have a descriptive title for a post - it helps in their Search.
Most of all, good luck, and think that you were able to get your answer. If you have any issue with the "snapshot camera icon," please let us know.

Fc express and live capture with non-controllable devices
final cut pro allows live capture from non-controllable devices, by selecting this option in the capture window (as i understand). in my case that would be a sony dvc trv900e which i want to use without a tape loaded, and that means no timecode is transmitted.
is it possible to do this in fc express? when i try to capture, i just get the window up saying waiting for timecode...great - thanks! i've read in numerous places that it is not possible in fc express, which i found hard to believe. i found the preset in the easy setup options. hallelujah!

Tape or Live Capture? Quality Difference?
I have never captured live footage direct from camera to computer. I have an opportunity to do so tomorrow on a 2-camera shoot. I have questions:
1) Is it possible to capture 2 firewire streams simultaneously in OnLocation or with some other program?
2) Is there a quality difference between live capture from an HDV camcorder and from a tape?
3) I have a Matrox MX02 Mini with which I can capture a stream via component HD. How does this compare quality-wise to HDV?
It is a long event - a bodybuilding contest (about 4 hours) I would love to save time not having to capture from tape afterwards, but wondering if the setup is worth it. I do not have a laptop, so I would bring my editing computer to the gig.Hi(Bonjour)!
If you shooted in DV format (standard resolution) monitor your footage on a Standard tv monitor, not on a HD one.
Did you shoot with extended play activated ?

Capturing live from a video mixer
We video our church services and want to make weekly DVDs of them. We have been using Final Cut Express with mixed success, but are about ready to switch to iMovie HD for several reasons.
The question is, can we capture live video from the video mixer (mixing two cameras and one computer to a single signal) to our hard drive using iMovie HD? If so, how.
Many thanks!
Pastor Ron Heffield (macfiveo)First of all, if you're shooting either normal (4x3) DV or 'widescreen' DV, you'll have to select the appropriate format when you start a New Project. (..See items 6 and 7, and the accompanying pics, in my post here..)
So when you slide the little onscreen selector from the "scissors" icon to the "camcorder" icon, and then click on the camcorder icon itself to choose the name of your mixer it may show "DV-VCR" or some other device name, as it's unlikely to know the exact name of your mixer. If no name is showing, and the iMovie screen says "No Camera Connected", just quit from iMovie and then restart iMovie.
You should then see the live feed, and then just click on 'Import'.
Alternatively, instead of importing with iMovie, you might try downloading and using BTV. You can then edit that captured material with iMovie.
[..P.S: I don't think BTV, or BTV Pro, is a "universal" application, so it should work OK with your PowerPC Mac(s), but maybe not with an Intel-based Mac..] -
Can QT Pro capture streaming video from webcams?
I'm trying to capture segments of video from the National Geographic's Wildcam Africa, in which they have a live feed of video from a waterhole in Africa 24/7. Can QT Pro do this? (All I can find is info on creating streaming video with QT.)
SnapZ Pro can create any format of QuickTime when you "finalize" the file. You only get one choice at this step so you must plan ahead.
If you capture at 640X480 and export to DV Stream you can edit that file with iMovie. Adjust your Display dimensions so your capture gets the biggest version of the on screen area. If the play window is small (most are 320X240) set your Display to 800X600 prior to capture and see if it helps. -
Play video from video capture device
I tried fixing my running of out memory for the video buffers problem but could find a fix. I have tried code from a book and it doesn't work. I can only get the video feed to display the video from the capture device using JMStudio, so the device works fine. Maybe my coding methodology/process is incorrect.
Is there anyone out there that knows of some working code that plays live video in a window from a video capture device. Any other help regarding to displaying capture video would help. Please help.
Thanks in advance.I am using the Belkin USB VideoBus II and it uses the video for windows drivers (vfw), so yet it is supported. And it works when I use JMStudio to play the live feed from the capture device. Thanks for the suggestion.
I also ran the code suggested above and I still get the same errors. Thanks for your suggestions. Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated. -
