Live Capture to new G Drive FAILING

I have a very unique problem. The reason I claim it is unique is that I've contacted the Apple 'Geniuses' (no sarcasm intended) in person at the local retail and the Apple pro at B&H Photo and none of the people could figure out my problem. Here it is:
I'm using FCP 5.0, with an Intel Duo Macbook Pro with 2 Gigs of ram and a 100gb 7200RPM HD. I have a 250GB G-Drive hooked up via Firewire 800 on both ends of the cord, and a Canon GL2 hooked up to the Firewire 400 on my computer. If I have the G-Drive hooked up, turned on, finder recognizes it, and it lets me make files, copy, paste... so forth. If, while Final cut is open, I turn on my camera to VTR and then go to the capture screen, it fails to recognize the camera, says "unable to initialize video deck." If I turn the camera on first and then the G-Drive, it won't recognize the G-Drive... so basically, whichever is hooked up first works.
WHAT I'VE TRIED either on my own or with the Apple Geniuses:
- Different Hard Drives
2 pro pc hard drives didn't work
1 Intel mini G Drive WORKED, FW 800-800
- Different Cords
800-400 didn't
400-400 didn't
different 800-800 (not the one that came with the drive Didn't work
- Different COMPUTER
Used the new Mac Pro with FC Studio 2 DIDN'T work
So... I'm in a bind here... and quite confused. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks sooo very much ahead of time!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   17", 2GIG RAM, 100gb 7200RPM HD,

It's not the G-Drive's fault, it's Canon's crappy implementation of firewire.
Here's my standard "so you are using a Canon camcorder to capture and it isn't working" routine:
Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
Before we go any farther
-you should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
-Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method. Do a quick search here on the site - it is mentioned daily if not hourly.
With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct and it still won't capture correctly, you are most likely a victim of the dread 'Canon firewire bus incompatibility problem'. Simply stated: Canon cameras do not play well with other devices on the same firewire bus. And, since all the firewire ports on a Mac connect to one bus - well - you get the picture.
The most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. A deck will save wear and tear on the camera's lightweight drive mechanism and will allow you to permanently connect a NTSC/PAL monitor for proper viewing. (If you are working with HDV, you will have other issues ...)
Beyond replacing your tape playback device, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 34) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
- shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
- connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
- start the camera then the computer
- capture to your internal (system) hard drive
- shut down the camera and computer
- disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
- start hard drive(s) and computer
- move captured files to external hard drive(s)
- edit
If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
- copy the file back to the internal drive
- shut everything down
- disconnect the external drive(s)
- connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
- start the camera then the computer
- play the file.
One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
Good luck.

  • Time Machine restore to new hard drive fails

This is on a Mac Mini (Early 2009), 8GB RAM,  that was running the latest version of Mavericks. This all started when the 120GB hard drive began failing.  The computer was running slow so I tried to repair permissions to no avail and also to repair the disk, but Disk Utility said there was a serious error and it was not able to repair it.  As it was at nearly full capacity anyway I replaced it with a new 1TB drive.
I am using an install DVD from Leopard (my Snow Leopard disc is damaged) to initiate the restore.  I've erased the new hard drive and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).   I'm able to select my from backups on my external drive and it will go through the entire process of copying everything back (1.5 - 2 hours long) only to give me a message at the end saying there was an error and it could not restore the files.  Restart and try again. (which I have, twice).  My TM backups include 6 user profiles and go back several years (and OS versions).
I suspect there is a compatibility issue between the Leopard install DVD and the TM backup which is Mavericks.   I've searched through the pondini.org site for assistance but nothing addresses this issue.   I also have an iMac (late 2009) running Mavericks.  Not sure if I can do something through Target mode?
I've tried restoring the latest Mavericks backup as well as the last one I had on Mountain Lion but no luck.
    Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Well my day just went from bad to worse.  Somehow I managed to erase the drive with the only copy of my backups.
I guess the good news is I get 10 points for solving the problem.

  • Brand new hard drive failed - is it me?!

Hello (Kate HS's other half here)
I recently had to replace the HD on our iMac (the original one failed more or less on it's second birthday)
I fitted a 250gb Hitachi drive about a month ago, restored data from backups and everything seemed great, until tonight...
I was watching TV via Eye TV when the computer froze - and when i forced shut down and restarted I was greeted by a blinking question mark. Booted from Disk First Aid and it couldn't see the HD. Hardware test shows " 2STF/1/4 " error.
Could it be that something other than HD could be causing this - or some other fault is destroying hard drives? (first time i had warning noises and regular crashes for a few days, this time there was nothing - instant death)
Could I have done something wrong when fitting it?
Or what are the odds of having 2 hard drives fail in the space of a month..?
    Hope you can help.

    To Apple Discussions!
Since your HD is only a month old it should still be under warranty. I would contact the manufacturer and/or get a new one.
In case it's not the HD, see your computer comes under the following program since you have an 20" G5 iMac. Hopefully, it's a Rev B:

  • Capturing to new external drive - problem

    Hi,
I just got a new 500gb Seagate external drive to use as my capture scratch. I'm trying to capture to it and all of my footage is coming out really choppy. If I capture it to my internal drive, it works perfectly fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem, or what I could do about it? I'm using FCP 4 with OS 10.4.10. Any help would be appreciated.

Although it may not be a factor in your capture situation, I noticed that you said you are running FCP v. 4 with OSX 10.4.10. I believe FCP 4 was optimized for OSX 10.3. and Quicktime 6.
You might want to avoid future capture and edit problems by reverting back to the systems and apps versions proven to work best with your version of FCP.

  • New printer driver failed to install on Windows 7

    Hello everyone,
Yesterday I purchased a wireless printer HP Envy 5530. When I installed the driver on my HP Pavilion mini windows 7(I don't know what the product name is since it is about 3 years old) , it failed. I called the HP printer hotline and spoke with someone in India. He told me there were some errors in my computer and I should pay them $149 to have them fix my computer. I am not sure this is the way that should be, or if there is any other method I can use to solve this problem? Please advise.
    Thanks in advance!

  • New hard drive failed verification/repair

After my hard drive in my 2013 MacBook Pro suffered damage, I replaced it with "WDC WD5000BPKX-00HPJT0 Media." I formatted the hard drive with a partition. However, after several attempts to reinstall the OS X, it still failed. I tried to verify and repair the partition in the "first aide" tab, but both of those failed. What does this mean? What do I need to do?

So here's my standard liquid spill spiel:
Whenever a liquid spill occurs the first thing that has to happen is the laptop should be shut down immediately. All power must be removed as soon as possible. It is especially important that the battery be disconnected and removed.
All affected parts must be removed from the laptop. No attempt should be made to start/restart the computer since this could potentially damage the logic board beyond all repair.
Then all affected parts would be washed in deionized water and blown dry with compressed air. (In a water spill the deionized water is probably not as critical. Depends on the mineral content of the water.) and blown dry with compressed air. This is especially true of the large chips on the logic board. Water can wick under them and cause havoc.
The logic board should be placed in a drying/dehumidifing oven for at least two days. Longer depending on the spill.
The keyboard is a separate matter.
"The computer worked for a couple of months and then just qu"
Ok so even if the coffee just went onto the keyboard it would have leaked through onto the logic board.
"flashing folder with a "?" on it."
So right it's not seeing the hard drive or the OS is corrupted or the hard drive died. Unlikely the hard drive died due to coffee spill. They're mostly waterproof except for the vent hole and of course the driver board is vulnerable as are the connectors.
"In fact, I wrote the above post on the MBP."
How were you able to do that? How did you boot the machine?
External HD? If that's the case did you should try the original internal drive in the external case.
Internal HD? If that's so then the WD is defective or try to put it in the external case and see if DU sees it and can reformat it. GUID partitioning scheme.
So see the second window has the amount of RAM.

  • System recovery failed new hard drive

I have an HP Pavilion g-6 1d26dx laptop.  I just replaced the hard drive with one ordered directly from HP.  When I went through the System Recovery, using the disks from HP, I got the following message:
There might be unexpected reboot during specialize to BBV1
The process will cause CTO panic because the image might not be normal
I got this message after trying the system recovery with and without the supplement disc for Application and Driver Recovery DVD that came with my other disks.
I have no idea what that message means, but I would appreciate any help getting this resolved.  I was operating on Windows 7.
    Thank you!

    Hi:
I hate recovery disks. Too many times they don't work and you are left high and dry.
It has happened to me twice on different PC's.
Try the cyberlink patch for the recovery disks you purchased which may fix the issue.
    Description
CyberLink Recovery Discs utility resolves an issue where Recovery Discs sent from HP do not work on a new hard drive.

If that fails to work, then the only other suggestion I have for you to get the operating system installed is the following and it is only good if you can still read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the bottom of your notebook.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft Windows 7 product key and can live with the bare operating system and software/drivers found on your PC's support page, you can make a plain W7 installation media by reading the info below.
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).

  • Trouble capturing with new drive

I recently purchased a CalDigit 2TB external drive to capture media.  When I try to capture from HDV or DV tape, I get dropped frame errors. In 10 years with working in Final Cut, this has never been a problem. Now live capturing is problematic. hit or miss.  Ingesting AVCHD files is no problem cause it isn't real time. Even doing "Capture Now" presents dropped frame errors.  At first, I was able to capture from tape with this new drive no problem.
Someone said that journaling on the new drive could be the issue. What the heck is journaling and should it be set to On or Off when capturing video?

Never thought about that... (and the next time a get new hd, will do that)...
Shane, (or anyone else for that matter) do you know if it is possible to remove the hard drive from an external hard drive and replace it?
The other day I gave my old G-drive to my dad to dismantle (he likes doing that sort of thing) and low and behold, he opened it up and it looks like you could just plug in any internal hard drive... In fact I did just that. However, I had already thrown out the power cord... so I cannot test it. lol, oh well. If this is possible, I will try and purchase a new power cord...

  • I have a 27" imac (intel) my hard drive failed and I installed a new one. This is my first time dealing with this so I am having trouble re-installing the OS. Install disc spits out and ? mark with folder appears what am I missing?

Like the title says. My 1 TB drive failed and unfortunately my computer isn't covered on the replacement program even though my hard drive is the one they are claiming to replace. So that is not a solution just to get that out of the way. So I replaced the hard drive. What I am having trouble with is re-installing my OS. I have 10.6. When I load it and restart it just spits it out and I get the question mark folder. What am I doing wrong is there a step I'm missing? I did do a back up to my Time Machine before the crash. Can I plug it into it and reload format? I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.

  • Hard Drive Failed, New one Installed, Problems of course

Hellooo Everyone This is sort of a last ditch effort to see if I can fix this myself or if I am going to have to shell out 500 dollars to get my laptop back in working order. So I have a HP dv6-6140 laptop. A few weeks ago the hard drive failed and I purchased and installed a new one, ran windows 7 and have it on my laptop. When I try to hook up an ethernet cable to download and install the drivers for the laptop the ethernet cable is not recognized it says no internet connection blah blah blah. Ok so I downloaded the drivers to a flash drive and installed some of them onto my laptop, no changes.  So I was thinking of purchasing the recovery discs which im assuming include the drivers for the notebook for 35 dollars which is paltry in comparison to what I would pay if I took it to a computer repair shop, but how do I know that would work? I dont. I am looking for ideas or anything that I may be missing. I am not computer illiterate but I am not an expert. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hi, Kelly:
On your model normally it is very important to install the chipset driver first and reboot before attempting to install the ethernet (wired network) driver.
The chipset drivers install some motherboard driver which I think enables the communication to the ethernet adapter.
The problem is, HP does not include the necessary chipset drivers for your model (which I assume is a HP Pavilion dv6-6140us Entertainment Notebook PC).
So...Download and install the AMD Chipset Drivers and reboot.  You want the first driver listed on the webpage.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Then see if the ethernet adapter works again or reinstall the ethernet driver after you reboot the PC.
The parts list indicates your model comes with a Broadcom wireless/bluetooth card.
Here are the links to the drivers you need for that...

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

    Hi-
As long as the drive is a SATA drive, and as long as the install was done on a PPC machine, or at least, with a Mac OS Extended format, the drive should be plug and play:
