Live color hidden "Preserve Black" setting (which defaults to on.) (CS3mac)

I am a fairly new user, but I was mystified/stunned/angered by the fact
this hidden option I had never set myself silently overrides an explicit color conversion I had selected.
I had a simple black and white image I was working on. Late in the game, I was needed to apply color to it. Great, it looks like Illustrator does that in an obvious way! I see the Black in the Current Colors column, double-click on the New column -> leaf green. Cool.
Uhhh, wait. Its not changing black to green. Hmmmm?
Easily a half an hour was spent drilling down into all of the different tiny little icons, on the Live Color menu (twice or thrice missing the *one* icon out of 13-14 which had the hidden option), which by the way many look like they do something with palettes of color. More time spent looking at all of the help. Searching on the internet.
By the way the two icons which claim to represent random action, should have dice images in them. One of them looks to swap two different *specific* colors for one another. I suspect it does not do that.
Maybe this all would have been more simple if a simple warning came up
that suggested that you can't change the current color black to the new color green, because black is locked. Instead, clicking on OK causes this dialog to silently slide away, acting as if it was doing the only color conversion I had listed.
Because I am not a graphics professional, I probably do not appreciate some of the complications required in the color-oriented tools in Illustrator, but it seems every time I use Illustrator, I beat myself into a bloody pulp over color.
I end up with artwork where I unintentionally apply subtly different colors, in part because the blinking thing keeps sliding back to another default color. I find that managing swatches and palettes of color completely non-intuitive. Trying to find colors which look good together also seems to be completely unintuitive, even though you seem to have tools including the online kuler tool which are supposed to help here. Illustrator seems to have tool upon tool piled on top over one another to deal with color, but no rhyme or reason to their arrangement or philosophy.
I'm sure its way too late for this complexity to be fixed, since it would anger long-time users who have mastered the existing ways of doing things, but this user is disappointed by the complexity. I am stuck with that complexity if I continue to use Illustrator.

Intense reds are a problem in video, particularly on text, with its sharp edges. It has more to do with the limitations of the medium than anything else.
Final Cut Pro is showing you a lower resolution "proxy" of your movie. You need to see it on a calibrated, broadcast monitor to judge it's actual quality. Or you can render out a small section and view it in QuickTime Player, which will also show the video at its full resolution.
As to your real time editing, an iMac is not the first choice for editing HD. Your only option to get slightly better results is to move your material to external FireWire 800 drives, even then, the speed is not really enough to handle the data rates of HD.

I opened a full colored PDF document (exported from InDesign using Profile: Euroscale Coated v2) in Photoshop and tried to convert it to grayscale (image > mode > grayscale) and noticed that the black color values changed. text for example that was 100% black in the PDF document became a screen of 91% black.
is there a way to preserve color values when converting full color PDF documents to grayscale?
or in other words WHICH is the correct way to convert full color PDF documents or full color InDesign files to grayscale?

Before you open the PDF in Photoshop, set PS's Color Settings to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces. When you open the PDF set the Mode to Grayscale in the Import dialog. Just remember to reset your color settings when you're done.
Edit: Also, if you want to match black percentages as well as 100% black, set the Photoshop Color Settings to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces with the Gray working space to Dot Gain 20%.

Yes. Well, sort of: instead of a "path", set the pen tool to "shape" in the tool properties. Then set the fill colour to transparent, and the stroke colour to the colour you want. You can also set the stroke width.
Not perfect, but at least you can see the path more clearly - the anchor points and handles still remain the default colour. Open the path panel, and right-mouse click the path shape to create a selection based on that shape. The Paths panel menu also allows you to create work paths based on that shape.
Unfortunately when you try to move the handles the black thin outline appears again until you release the mouse button.
This is one of several things that works better in Photoline: in Photoline, once the path is set to a specific colour, editing the path uses the actual colour and stroke width. which is extremely handy for creating path based selection with awkward background colours and/or a high resolution screen. In Photoline the handles and bezier points are also much, much larger, which makes it rather simpler to work with as well - especially on a higher resolution screen. And when selected the handles and points are a clear red with a black outline - again easier to spot and identify. I just works better, in my opinion.

One will need to have the full software installed on each computer to get this functionality.
To set greyscale:
* Open the Printing Preferences for the CM1410 driver that installs for this printer
* Select the Color tab at the top
* Click the Print in Greyscale check box
* Save the options and attempt a print

Is there a way to set which keychain item is used by default for a site/application?

This question applies primarily to the keychain in Mavericks, but also the iCloud keychain and its use in iOS.
There are several sites and services for which I have multiple logins that serve different purposes. Whether it's because they are business/personal accounts, or accounts that pertain to different functions, I have multiple logins for many sites/services I use daily, however, there is usually one primary account for each that I use for most purposes.
What I would like to be able to do is set which of these logins appears by default. An example scenario might be if I have an "admin" account on a site, and a "dev" account that is used for testing purposes to Q/A the site from the perspective of a user who doesn't have administrative access. Most of my work happens under "admin" but whenever I go to the login page, the "dev" account prepopulates in the login form and I have to start typing admin and select that. It also does this on my iPhone, which is where this issue becomes very cumbersome, because there is no dropdown for me to select which credentials to use to autofill from. It appears to only allow autofill from whatever it sees as the first account to come up, and I can't seem to change that without deleting all the other keychain items that come up ahead of the one that I want. This kind of thing also poses a significant risk of accidents if, say, I have multiple payment methods saved and the one that comes up by default isn't my personal payment method, but a business account that's only meant to be used for business purchases. If that comes up first, if I don't replace it with my personal details, I might accidentally place a personal charge on a business account.
So I really have 2 questions:
1) Is there a way to set the priority order of which account populates a form by default from the keychain?
2) When filling out credentials on iOS, an "autofill" button appears at the top of my keyboard, and I can begin typing in a field and it will show the autocomplete of the username that I am typing, but if I click autofill, it replaces it with the original credentials and not those of whatever I began typing in. If I click on the username it's autocompleting, it just clears the autocomplete. Is there some way to choose which username I'm autocompleting a form with?
Thanks to anyone who has any ideas about a solution to this, and if there isn't, and if anyone at Apple is listening, in an ideal world, it would be like setting the priority order of known wifi networks, where you can drag your first choice to the top of the list.

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)

Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

Try saving your settings as a Preset by clicking the Preset drop down and then select Save Current Settings as a Preset.
Next try changing the settings by selecting the saved preset.
That allow saving the settings for a specific printer, I assume it may also allow selecting these settings for another printer.

You can set using UIManager of the Look and Feel.
UIManger.put("Button.background", Color.blue);
will set the color of all the JButtons to blue. Like that you can change for all the components you need.

Color Profiles even when Profile set as Default keep switching - G570

I recently had to calibrate the G570 monitor. The default profile for Lenovo is too blue and for office work this may not be a problem. However, it's an issue when drawing and illustrating.
For example, the image imbedded in this thread http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=232287
Shows someone having issues with color management because the Samsung profile is too yellow, and yet their display shows whites (ie in the layers palette, OS etc...)
If you look through the default Lenovo or Thinkpad calibration, your monitor is too blue to tell the difference between the hues. I calibrated mine with a Spyder Express.
Now on to the problem. Even though I have it on as default to be loaded in Color Management in Windows 7, it appears to keep flickering off and on between the default profile that comes with Lenovo laptops and the Calibrated profile with Spyder express.
Even in the Advanced settings in Color Management and setting the default as the Spyder icm profile, I still get the flickering when it comes out of sleep/monitor turned off etc.
Is there a way to keep it consistently on?

If you have a custom color profile for color management, you need to disable igfxpers.exe from dominating it.
I disabled it in the Startup Services, and ended the process in the Task Manager. My monitor now stays at the profile I calibrated it for.
This is a problem with Intel's software and not Lenovo.

In most cases you get this dialog box every time you print. It is called the print dialog and normally when you print, a print dialog appear showing the printer that is to be used. Which printer you see will be based on what you have set in Print & Fax as you mention. But regardless of what you have set there, you still have the option to change the printer via the print dialog.
If you are using an application that does not show the print dialog, like MS Word and that stupid "print one copy" print icon in the toolbar, then you can often change the action the print icon uses so that the print dialog appears.

When you try to print, use COMMAND P, it should bring up a window similar to this you can select the preset there. It shoud remember the preset after.

I have a Crystal Report that contains a Color Logo. The particular problem that I am facing concerns sending the report to PDFBlaster.
When PDF BLaster is selected as the "PRinter" from the Crystal Viewer Print Button, the report is rendered in color. However if the PDFBlaster is selected from my Windows form, and SelectPRinter is used to print the report to PdfBlaster, the report is rendered in Black and White.
I noticed that this happens if my default printer is Black and White printer. IF the default printer is color , then the report is rendered in color regardless of whether it is printed from the Viewer or not.
Is there a setting that I can use to preserve the Report's properties? It seems to me that I am losing the "color" properties of the report when I use the ReportObject.SelectPrinter method.

You did not say what version of CR and I don't believe this is .NET either so I moved your post where the RDC is posted. In any event what you discovered is what likely you need to do. Add another printer and set the default option to print color. Then when your app selects the printer use that printer.
CR Engines do not have a specific API to set the Color option, you select/set it in code first.

Hello, there's an option of using the Ctrl + + to zoom the Web page, but it reverts to the Firefox default zoom in the midst which is very annoying. Generally, I'd like to be able to set a certain default zoom level and then only if needed use the CTRL +/- zoom in and out options. So my optimal zoom level is used for all my browsing unless I change it.

I have listed 2 add-ons below for you to consider. I have not used NoSquint, but I use and rely on Default FullZoom Level.
