Live correcting color on multiple Mini DV cameras and MBP?

I'm looking for a solution. I am a wedding videographer, I shoot with a Canon XL1s, Canon GL2, and sometimes another Canon camera (model changes). What i am looking for is a way to plug the cameras into my macbook pro and be able to calibrate the colors. Thats what i struggle with is getting all the colors to match from camera to camera. Does anyone have any ideas?

If ionly it were that simple. Then we could all buy a $200 camera, white balance it, and it would look the same as a $30,000 camera (or more.) The way the cameras handle light is different. The amount of ccd chips makes a difference. The quality of pixel record on those ccd chips... etc. I did something similar. I used three different cameras to shoot a staged play. THen multitracked the iso tapes. It took SEVERAL hours of color correcting before I could even begin to edit. They were all white balanced to the same object on the stage, at the same time, under the same light. ANd the differences were light night and day.
There is a vector scope and histogram monitor in the capture window, but you would only be able to give yourself a preview of how much work you'll have to do in post to match the cameras. THe good news is, you can get them pretty darn close if you know how to color correct well. I actually learned a lot more about color correcting from learning photoshop than I did from learning FCP. Photoshop work greatly improved my FCP filter manipulation.
Good luck, but if you can afford to get another camera, try to get a match.Maybe sell the other ones...just suggestions...

  • Mini DisplayPort - VGA and MBP 2011 not working

    Hi,
I can't get my 13" mbp 2011 to connect to VGA screens. I've bought a mini DisplayPort to VGA converter (an Apple one, not a no name) and if I connect a display over VGA the screen stays black. My mbp recognizes the display, I can see the display's model, resolution etc but no signal. I've tried multiple screens, none work.
I don't have other converters so I can't test if HDMI screens for example do work.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have a 2011 13" i7 and am having the same issue when connecting it to my LG TV through the HDMI adapter. However when I connect it to my HP external monitor it works but it's VERY blurry... so blurry that it hurts the eyes to look at it for more than a few mins.
My previous MBP (2010 13") works fine however with both the TV and monitor. I even reconnected it just to make sure and they both work flawlessly.
I only have 14 days total to return this new MBP and 5 of those days are used up so if I can't get this fixed by then I have no choice but to return it and go back to my old MBP.

  • Digital camera and MBP

I just bought a new Canon Powershot S3 IS digital camera.
I haven't used it yet, just opened the box.
It comes with a CD, "Digital Camera Solutions" that they say
you need to install in order to be able to download pictures from camera to the computer.
My question is this: do I really need this program?
Or can iPhoto take care of downloading my pictures?
I don't really want to install something that I don't need.
    Thanks!

  • Washed Out Colors When Digitizing From Mini-DV camera

Instead of renting a deck, I figured I'd just use a mini-DV camera to digitize some footage. The reasoning I'm using, is that there is NO DIFFERENCE in quality between digitizing mini-DV footage from a professional deck vs just a mini-DV camera. Is that correct?
The problem is that the footage on the LCD screen on the camera looks great. Vivid colors, solid blacks, great contrast. However, when I digitize into FCP 7 (Snow Leopard) the footage becomes murky. Washed out colors, milky blacks and hence it looks a lot more low-res than what I'm seeing on the camera's LCD screen when it digitizes.
Now, my first thought is that the screen is just compensating with more saturation and contrast. However, I'm also worried that somehow the footage isn't being brought in properly. I'm using the standard NTSC DV Anamorphic preset and capturing that way. Is there some gamma setting along the way could have affected the footage.
As it looks great on the camera's LCD, I'm wondering if there isn't some capture setting somewhere. Otherwise, I'm going have to boost the saturation and contrast to try and make the FCP footage match what I'm seeing on the camera.

It's all there in my initial inquiry.
Kind of...(let's not forget that your profile still lists G4 / Mac OS 10.4.2)...these details are important.
We ask for specifics, because often users have inadvertently tweaked settings, or run Software Update or some other upgrade, that can affect the system as a whole, particularly FCP.
Things like... exactly which version of QT are you using? Snow Leopard loads QTX (QT10) by default, which can cause it's own issues. It is possible to load QT7 additionally, but it will go into your Utilities folder (you should be able to move it to Applications), but since I'm not versed in SL, I'll not speculate whether it's an issue for you or not.
That's one example. So, please give us exact versions/info on...
    OS/FCP/QT
Capture and Sequence settings (just to make sure)
    How is the camera connected?
How are you currently monitoring your captured media?

  • Possible Noob Question: Correcting Colors From Cheap Digital Camera

I'm somewhat embarrassed to ask this here, but ya gotta start some place.
I'm a web dev so forgive my ignorance. I work with photos a lot, but they've always come to me from people who know what they're doing. I don't really understand digital -photography- that well---which is quite different I realise than film.
Anyhoo, I'm trying to get better colors from a  pocket digital camera (Canon Elf 310) which (supposedly) has 12MP. The pictures I want to take for the job I have in mind involve clouds and landscapes and I gotta take a pocket came because we're camping/fishing.
Anyway, they -could- be very cool but the tests I've done show that the colors are going to be just -wrong-. And by 'wrong' I mean everything either seems -under- saturated or hyper-statured. For example... the subtle pinks in clouds are rendered as washed out or will be overly contrasty (hyper) yellow to orange.
The detail is quite sharp, however so does that mean there's something 'there' there which can be properly corrected? And if so, how?
If it's too wordy, perhaps maybe someone can just recommend a good text on the subject?
    TIA,
    ---JC

    I completely agree with Mylenium.
Beyond working with the various Tools in PS, for "Color Correction," I would start with a properly calibrated monitor, so that you know that what you are "correcting," is the Image, and not the monitor.
Next, familiarization with those Tools, such as Hue/Saturation, will be very useful. The Help file can get you started, by defining what each Tool can do, and a short-course on how it does it.
I would always work with non-destructive techniques, so that one can always go back and re-edit things. For that Hue/Saturation, mentioned above, I would use a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. Same for Color Balance, and the rest.
Last, you eye should be your guide, on that calibrated monitor. Adjust, until you get what YOU like (or what your client likes). Remember that by default, most of those "corrections" will be "global" for the Image, BUT with Layer Masks, you can restrict/constrain the corrections to just certain areas of that Image. At that point, knowing about the various Masking techniques will be very helpful. Besides the Help file, there are many useful tutorials on various Masking techniques, and many will apply to Layer Masks.
Also be aware that different camera sensors might bias differently, and also with lower-resolution Images, you will likely not have a great deal of Dynamic Range to work with. Start with the best possible, from your camera. If possible, shoot in Camera RAW, and use the "processing" power of ACR (Adobe Camera RAW), to get started. You should be able to create a Preset for your camera (maybe shoot a McBeth Color Checker card, and calibrate that), to get that processing started.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Canon mini Disk camera doesn't work if external drive connected

A long story.      Anyway, I have a MacPro Intel Dual Core 266 Ghz with 5 Gbs RAM,  4 internal hard drives HD1~HD4 (HD1 OSX 250 and three 500Gb) and two external HD5 (two partitions~HD5 & Time Machine Backups) and HD6 (1 Tb each).
I've been using a Canon mini DV video camera FV-M10 (Firewire 400) for live video (Skype/iChat) and also for importing video into Final Cut Express, After Effects or iMovie up until a few days ago.  Both "live" video and from the recorded mini cassette tape.  Then all of a sudden not one of the software recognized my camera anymore.  I tried both Firewire 800/400 and USB2 connections using a few different cables. In Skype...(sometimes) it automatically shows the name FV-M10 in the camera slot, but the screen is black.  No, I checked if I left the cover on.  I checked my Sony WX-5 digital camera and see if that is recognized.  Yes, both pics and AVCHD videos are seen using the USB connection.
    The problem started like this.
I was downloading a file.  Had to work for an hour and when I came back upstairs.  I noticed that the screen was frozen.   So, I shut the Mac down.  And when I started it again, well nothing happened except for a grey screen.  A half~sized cursor was stuck up in the top left.  But, my mouse also had a cursor which was movable.
It wouldn't even recognize the OSX Install Disk holding down "C" or "Option".  Only starting with "Shift" held down, "Safe Boot"  could I use the basics like Mail, Safari, Firefox.   NO sound and no video. Tried a few times as well as cleaned my OSX HD1 hard drive and re-installed from "Safe Boot" mode".   So, I had it sent into Apple Tokyo for repairs.   Apple put in a new board.     Great!      I came it back in two days.   I cleaned the OSX hard drive and re-installed Mac OSX with the up-dates as well and got some of my main backed up stuff Mail, bookmarks, address book etc.   It started fine.     But, when I went to use Skype, iChat, iMovie or Final Cut Express  they still couldn't recognize my camera.  I had been using the Canon FV M10 camera for a few years with both external hard drives on.  There were never any problems until just before I sent it into the shop.
There was only one way to use my camera.  Un-Plug the external HD6.  Then the camera functions fine.  but remember I had been using this camera with both HD's for around two years without any problems.
Notes on symptoms:  and what actions I took.
Front connections: FW400 Canon camera.  FW800 (Tried connecting HD6)
    Rear Connections: USB2 1) MidiMan 2 x2   2) mouse  3) Canon Printer
                                   FW400 HD5  FW800 (tried HD6)
    With HD6 Connected.
iMovie 11 9.02 : Start iMovie  O.K.  No camera on.   Turned camera "on" then "No Camera Connected" notice came up.   (did this a few times)   Turned camera off.   Quit iMovie.
2nd start:  Camera On.   iMovie freezes.   Spinning Colored beach ball.   I then Force Quit Option-Apple-ESC
iMovie shows (not responding)  When I turn off the camera.  (not responding) disappears and iMovie is working again.  But, "No Camera Connected" shows again.  Quit!
    Un-Plugged (Ejected) HD6.
When I un-plugged HD6,    (tried both the front and rear connections).   iMovie still on.
"No Camera Connected"  I Quit iMovie.
Re-start iMovie:  Camera on… Live video and record miniDV tape can both be seen.
Skype:  Both live video and mini DV tape recording even plays back over Skype screen.
    iChat (same as Skype) O.K.
Since Apple replaced the board 661-3932 Card Video, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT which cost just about $X00.00  (¥XX,000).   I assume that they don't also check all the connections etc. I mean from the connector to the video board.
The call to Apple Tokyo today.
Just talked to Apple (Mac) Tokyo about my computer problem.  Seems like they're trying to squeeze their way of more repairs by saying I have a hard drive configuration problem.   But it doesn't seem like that!   I worked with it 2~3 hours today...and  here is the basic problem.
I've used the Canon FV M10 mini DV camera with Skype, iChat, iMovie and FCEx for few  years  (HD6) is over a year old-the most recent add on) with no problem.    With both external 1Tb hard drives.  And Apple said that it's a 3-party problem.  (different makers etc.)  But, it's NOT!     Yes, they put in a new board.   But, I'd say the problem is from the connection (where I plug the cable into the Mac)  to the board.
When I connect HD6 (1Tb ext hard drive).   FW 800 (either back or front connection) the video camera doesn't work in  Skype, iChat, iMovie, or Final Cut Express.     If I eject and Un-Plug HD6  all of them work fine.  The camera "live" or the camera playing back the mini DV tape video.
Wouldn't this be a problem between the connections (front & back) to the new video board?  Or does anyone have an answer.   Apple seems to have said, "We can't help you".   Please someone help!  thanks

+My mini isn't responding to startup commands like "C" or "D" from the keyboard.+
You'll need a wired usb keyboard for these commands to work -- and the Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work either.
But just about any PC usb keyboard will work. Alt maps to Option and Win-key to CMD.

  • Correct Color Profile for a 17" PB

It appears the monitor profile on my PowerBook is not representing the correct color saturation on graphic files I create. It is set to the default Color LCD under the Displays Preference Pane.
The problem first came to light after I submitted a post card design for my business to our online printer. We have processed many jobs through the same printer and haven't had any problems. Yet on this job, the design looked great on my PB but when I got the printed cards back they were way over saturated. This week I did another new design but this time I sent it to my designer to take a look at it first before I sent it off to the printer. And she said the same thing, the file was over saturated. So she corrected it on her calibrated monitor and I sent the file off for printing. I'm sure when I get the post cards back they will be fine.
But my question is, how can I adjust the saturation on my PB and do so correctly. The display looks good to me and the colors look right. I have tried the Color Sync calibration tool with no success. And I don't have the resource to buy a hardware calibration device. So my questions are...
Which Displays profile should I be using assuming the Color LCD is incorrect?
Does any one have a Color Profile that they've created on the same PB as mine that has proven to been calibrated correctly?
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

there have been at least two versions of the pb 17" 1.67ghz, so to get another user's profile you'd need to say exactly which model you have, but age/setting variations mean it may still not be a good match
i use a hardware calibrator, but even with a custom profile there are still problems, mainly because the displayed image is very sensitive to viewing angle, so even if calibrated it is still easy to get things wrong when adjusting an image
you may be able to improve on the default 'color lcd' profile this way...
if you open the display preferences, click on the 'color' tab, and then click 'calibrate' you can create a custom profile 'by eye', you may find this gives better results, make sure you do this after the pb has been left for a few minutes at your usual brightness setting and in the same light conditions you usually work in
if your pb is the same model as mine i can give you a copy of one of my profiles for you to try

  • New 13" Macbook Pro trying to connect to a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 as second monitor. I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. The Macbook does not sense the second monitor (TV). Help?!

I've been a Mac since 2008, so I know my way around the system pretty well. This issue, however, has me stumped. I had an iMac until now and only now am I experiencing some difficulty with my new MacBook Pro. The model I have is the newest 13" Macbook Pro model and I'm trying to connect a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 42" HDTV as a second monitor via the Thunderbolt port.
It worked the first two times and hasn't worked since, after 10-15 attempts with different configurations, turning things on n off, restarting the mac, unplugging the cables, adapters, TV, resetting the P RAM, etc... I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. No matter what I do, the Macbook does not sense the TV as a second monitor anymore.
I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store, and their "genius" there had it working fine with a DVI connection to a regular monitor. The Panasonic TV I have has HDMI connections and one VGA connection which does not support HD, but no DVI option. I want an HD connection to mirror or extend my MacBook Pro screen. At the Apple Store, they didn't have a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so he could not try that out for me.
Anyone else have this configuration or another similar one with a Panasonic HDTV?
    Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?! Help!!
P.S. I'm running Mountain Lion, if that wasn't already obvious. Everything is up to date in my App Store as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • How to color-correct / color-match a lot of photos to a certain target.

    Hi there,
I have something like 1,850 photos, taken in RAW and later converted to DNG, to create a stop motion. All the photos were taken with the same camera (Canon 5D Mk II) and most of them with a 24-70L. All were taken in the same lighting conditions (in an interior, with the house lighting from flourescent lights) and the same day, in a period of maybe 2 or 3 hours. Each "take" was with the exact same camera and exposure parameters.
When processing the photos in Lightroom (using the LR4 beta) I can see some minor but very noticeable differences between color an exposure in the photos of the same "take". The exposure can be more or less automatically corrected by the Matching total exposures (although I think this doesn't work when the exposures are really similar, but there are some subtle differences like in this case, say, something along ~1/5 stop or so), but I haven't found how to try to match the white balance. All of the photos have already been set to a specific WB (I took a ColorChecker Passport at the beginning of the session), but there are still some differences between some of the shots. Some of them look a tad more greener. I blame the flourescent bulbs, but I'm not sure of the real cause.
So, the question is: is there a way to match the color balance of a series of photos to a target one? I really don't want to go photo by photo setting the white balance manually. Is there a tool like the Match total exposures, but for color balance? I have already tried with the automatic white balance and it helps somewhat, but the problem is that the decided WB for the photos is not the one I need, and I need to have the same WB for all the session, and this could change from different takes. The difference between shots is usually around 4 or 5 "points" in the Tint scale, some are with Tint +11, some with +15.
Any ideas? Or any other tool that could process this after? At the end I'll use JPGs to create the stop motion, so if there is a tool that could process the exported jpgs it could work too.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rodrigo Gómez

Thanks Lee. I thought that could be the cause too. It's strange that some photos taken, for instance, at 1/100 doesn't show that problem but others taken at 1/30 do show that issue... Uhm, now that I think about this, here in Europe the frequency is 50hz, so it would make sense with this numbers.
I was expecting a more optimistic answer! But I've searched everywhere I can think of and haven't found anything, so I guess I'll have to test how much does it show in the stop motion and see if a correction it's really needed.
    Thanks!

  • Color temperature setting on camera and in Lightroom do not match

I found that Lightroom shows different value of color temperature then was set on the camera body when the photograph was taken.
For example I have set up color temp. to 3700K for the given scene according to what the external color meter was showing (Sekonic Color meter C-500 Prodigi Color). It was 3700K, no color correction.
When I imported this Raw file into Lightroom the reading of color temp. was 3550 and -10 to green.
When I import the same file into Capture NX2 the temperature reading in the software is same as was set on the camera: 3700,0,0. Why this difference. Do I have some hidden setting somewhere in the Lightroom adjusting the CT during import into Lightroom?

    >Hi Lee Jay, so if I understand you well I should ignore the number. But then how LR knows what are the neutrals? Is it calculating something like average tonality and then sets the white balance so that this average is neural gray like some simple cameras do?
Regardless what LR does it would be nice to see what was the camera set to when the shot was taken at least for reference purposes.
You see a different number because LR uses a different color temperature model than your camera. There are different color models in use and there is no standard unfortunately so I guess that the ACR developers simply chose one that they liked best. In the Lightroom model a certain color temperature has a different meaning than the same temperature in another model. The calculation between the two is trivial. So when you see value A in Lightroom it is exactly equivalent to value B in your camera. No analysis of your image happens, it is just doing a simple transform of your camera's measured temp and tint values into the system used in Lightroom.

  • Help.Looking for a new HD/ mini DV camera that will work with FCP ExpressHD

I just bought a imac with final cut express HD and am looking to buy a new HD/mini DV camera for under $900.00 that i will have no problems with my mac.I was looking at the Sony-HDR-HC3 HD mini which i found for $700.00 and that seemed pretty good.Does any one have any suggestions??I would greatly appreciate it.

When you say no problems with your Mac are you aware of the workflow difficulties editing HDV? e.g monitoring via external HD monitor is an expensive option, burning HD DVD's similarly so.
However this cam has an HDMI out to enable you to connect to your HDTV to view your recorded content, so if you can live with monitoring through your computer for editing, this is a decent camera for the $$'s.
A friend of mine has a Sony DCR-HC96 and is pleased with the larg(ish) single CCD, giving improved low light capabilities over other domestic miniDV camcorders.
At around $500, it is a miniDV alternative worthy of consideration, if more suitable for your budget without the HDV editing headaches.
It depends whether you really need/want HDV rather than SD and what your final output requirements are.

  • I want to use my I Pad mini to play videos from my Gopro Hero HD camera and also to use as a monitor if possible?

I want to use my I Pad mini to play videos from my Gopro Hero HD camera and also to use as a monitor if possible? What software would i need to use ? I movie is what i use with my I Mac not sure if this will work on I Pad Mini?

At first I thought that this solved my problem, but alas it didn't. It does appear to add display area for your computer or to suplement it. But it is not a view screen for your Mini. I guess I will just have to live on with my monitor and use my Ipad and the "remote" app to run Itunes.
Once I have the system all set up, I could use the display but I don't know why I would. Thanks for your help.

  • Pinout for HP Mini 5101 Camera (BN81U50U-000)

I got an old HP Mini 5101 that was broken and decided to just harvest parts from it. I've seen people on the internet make a USB web cam out of old laptop cameras and wanted to try it but just can't find the pinout for this camera anywhere. Does anyone know the pinout of this camera? Thanks!
Pro tip, if it's hard to see the image, just right click on it and open it in a new tab, then you can zoom in.

Dorgem has been discontinued so I think you'll have to go with MSN live messenger.

  • Where can I buy a good, affordable Mini-DV camera in Orange County?

I know 3CCD is the best for the time being, but I can't afford a 1200 camera. Where's a good place that'll have a good selection on Mini DV camcorders that I can play with, get to feel, etc. I'm in the Orange County area, or if anyone knows of any good websites. Thank you!

I have been reading reviews regarding the new CMOS cameras and it turns out they perform as well as 3 chip cameras. The advantage of CMOS is you need much less light than the thirst for light triple chippers and the color green is now accurately reproduced by a single CMOS, something single CCDs could not do. If you can locate one of these babies in the Mini DV flavor than Bob's your uncle. Unfortunately the masses have spoken and mini DV is slowly becoming extinct.
