Live effects such as Drop shadow and blurs convert to flatten images with giant clipping masks preventing edits?

Without reason and at great costs, live effects convert to unusable web style graphics. This is not photoshop. Is adobe moving to kill Illustrator in favor of PhotoShop style web graphics? Suddenly every time I open a template the drop shadow or Gaussian blur has been converted to transparent overlay with a giant opacity mask applied. In trying to repair the damage by releasing the opacity mask the whole graphic jumps to a black square? Not all of the effects do this, just newer templates. I first thought because a fellow artist creates her graphics in RGB work space that this was the cause. It is not. Now randomly this happens. What am I doing wrong that causes this.

No they are ones my company creates for products we carry. We print on the items. I need to center logos on the items and not the items and the shadow. I also need to update the items as time goes by. It used to be as simple as open the file and make the needed changes. Now I have to start from scratch on the items that self convert. Any time a computer file self converts to a different type of file you have a problem. Only certain templates have morphed like this. I'm sure it's something I'm not catching.

  • Drop shadows and HTML5

When there is a Smart Shape with both a stroke and a fill, plus a drop shadow, the drop shadow looks like it only applies to the stroke. I have several such objects with fairly thick 3 or 4 pt stroke. The drop shadow should be behind both the stroke and the fill. To avoid this I've been creating two identical shapes when only one is needed. The bottom shape has a drop shadow and the top shape does not.
Does anyone know a better workaround that doesn't require so many shapes?

    Hi Jay,
As you are used to, I double-checked what was my idea about those shadows: being simply a slightly moved duplicate of the original shape with the color, alpha and other settings you setup in the PI, Shadow accordion. I published to HTML5 and everything showed up as expected, here is a screenshot of that published version:
For the first smart shape I only decremented the Alpha more for the Fill in order to see better the duplicate, shadow image. The second one has no fill, but I customized the shadow color.
Could you post a screenshot of your different result?

  • Rendering Drop Shadows and Text

You know... for a system that can play 16 video streams in HD and dynamically adjusts the playback quality to handle all of that to play in real time......
why does a drop shadow and crawling text require a render on 2 streams of SD video?
I'm editing plain NTSC 29.97 DV footage..... my sequence settings are the same as my clips... all footage plays fine and generates a green preview bar for when I start getting complicated..... but when i add a drop shadow....... no matter what.... no matter how many streams are on... (even if it's only one) red render required to play.
It just seems odd that it can handle so much more information than what a drop shadow seems to generate..... the same happens with scrolling or crawling text. Is there anyway to get this in a preview..... so i don't have to spend 4 minutes rendering something that might not even work the way I want it to in the first place?

  • Is it possible to put a drop shadow on text added to an image?

Is it possible to put a drop shadow on text added to an image using Photoshop Elements 10?

    Yes.
Open the Effects palette. In the drop-down. go to "Drop Shadows." You will find several listed. After you have applied, double click on the f on the text layer in the layers palette. This will bring up the Style Settings. Here you can fine-tune the shadow..
Note that in the drop-down referenced above, there are also Bevels which may enhance your presentation.

  • I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro?

I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro? If so, which Compressor codec is best to use in order to preserve the original 720/60p?   How do I maintain the highest quality?

No...ProRes is a high quality format. Finishing format.  Many TV networks take that as a final deliverable.
BUT...DVDs aren't high definition...they are SD.  You cannot make a 720p60 DVD with DVD Studio Pro.  Any DVD you make will be SD...720x480.  The only HD DVD format out there is BluRay, and for that you need a BluRay burner.
As for making a high quality DVD...using the BEST QUALITY settings in Compressor will work:
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it and select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the browser and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Drop Shadow Orange blur issue

    AI CC v. x.0.0
    Work PC Setup:
    Core i7
    16gb ram
    Windows 8.1
    GTX 750
The issue randomly arose on my co-workers pc. Has been working 100% until suddenly when she applies a drop shadow. The drop shadow has an orange blur extending out from it. However when we save out a file the orange disappears. No changes had been done to the pc and no updates were done. Restarting app and/or pc makes no difference. We made a new file separate from the original issue one, same deal. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Actually strangely enough we went back to take a screenshot and it seems to have fixed itself.
Options for the effect didn't matter. No matter the blending option, opacity, color, etc. Was done on varying color background as well as black and white bgs. Always had a peach-orange blur around the actual shadow itself. The exported image also was random variables I attempted. High quality or low quality jpg, PDF, TIF, or .eps. All appeared on screen perfectly fine in acrobat, windows image preview, and our rip. It was only in actual illustrator at it caused an issue. And now sadly I can't even show the silly thing. I apologize, but I do appreciate the real quick response.

  • Drop Shadows and Color Copiers

If you have a color copier or color laser printer try this test:
    1. Create a page in InDesign with a pale CMYK background (I'm using 40% C, 30% M)
    2. Create a small white box on top of the background and rotate it 10 to 60°
    3. Add a drop shadow with default settings (multiply 100% K at 75% opacity)
    4. Export a PDF using ANY export settings you like
    5. Print the PDF to your color copier out of Acrobat, again using any setting you like
What I get is a bounding box around my white square that is a slightly different color than the background tone. It is obviously the area that includes transparency because of the drop shadow, which is being rasterized either when the file is made into a PDF or when it is printed. This same PDF looks fine on screen in Acrobat and looks fine when rasterized into Photoshop: absolutely no difference in the color of the background visually or with the eye-dropper. This PDF also prints totally fine when I send it directly to my cheapo inkjet and when I drop it into my color managed RIP that runs our higher-end inkjets. I should add that there is no RIP in front of the 2 different color copiers I am testing. The same thing happens on a client's color copier.
What appears to be happening is that the color copier renders raster data differently than vector data, which results in this bounding box being visible. I've tried printing directly out of InDesign and indeed if I select "Print as Bitmap" in the advanced tab, the problem goes away. However, I need to be able to send out PDFs that will print correctly on any kind of office printer. Obviously I could rasterize the whole thing in Photoshop, but I've got hundreds of flyers to prepare, and they need to be small enough to e-mail and look good when printed.
There is no "Print as Bitmap" option when creating PDFs, and they would probably be too big anyway. How can I get the drop shadow effect to work correctly in this situation?
    Thanks in advance!
    -Todd Shirley

    Thanks for the link Bob!
It ALMOST works. In the link a procedure is described for rasterizing the whole page by creating a custom Transparency Flattener Preset, which I would THINK would solve my problem. Unfortunately the only way to access Transparency Flattener Presets in the PDF export is to set Compatibility to Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3), which creates a PDF that my color copier won't print at all! It just hangs in whatever that thing has for a RIP. I left one for about a half hour and it finally came out all crazy messed up.
The goal here is to create a relatively small PDF that can be distributed to hundreds of offices and printed correctly on whatever kind of office machine they have. My Canon color copier is brand new and if it chokes on PDF 1.3 I can only imagine what older copiers will do.
So the quest continues! Is there any way to fix the problem without rasterizing the whole page? Or is there a way to rasterize the whole page but make a PDF 1.4 or higher? Keep the suggestions coming!
    -Todd

  • DROP SHADOWS AND VIDEO ISSUES

I am using Windows7 and ID CS5.  I have discovered that having more than one drop shadow causes ID to redraw the entire page after every action.  Move a text box a fraction of an inch and it redraws everything.  This usually takes between 15-20 seconds to do.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I have 24 gigs of ram and dual video cards @ 1gb memory each and not sure why the drop shadows would cause this type of problem.  Other than doing the layout and then adding the drop shadows at the end, any other insight would be appreciated.

    You can check these settings:-
    1) Turn off the preflight from the Windows-->Output-->Preflight
    2) Change the Live screen drawing to "Never"  under Edit-->Preferences-->Interface
    3) Change the Display performance to "Typical" if it is set to "High Quality" , under View-->Display Performance

  • Can comboboxes have drop shadows, and if so, how (Flash Pro)?

    Hi
Is it possible to give the drop down part a drop shadow? At the moment, mine blends a little too much into a datagrid.
    Cheers

You can do it programmatically the same way you would assign a filter to any DisplayObject...
        import flash.filters.DropShadowFilter
        var cbFilter:DropShadowFilter = new DropShadowFilter ();
        cb.filters = [cbFilter];
Another approach sans AS3 for the same effect would be to just place cb inside a MovieClip and apply the filter to the MovieClip thru the properties panel
Though you will find that it only shadows the main element in both of those approaches, not the drop list portion with the shadow.  To add it to the drop list portion you need to target that....
        cb.dropdown.filters = [cbFilter];

  • Drop Shadows and Transparency in Illustrator CS4

    here's what's happening in Illustrator CS4.
    Create a new document
    In Attributes, check overprint fill
    Add any text
    Apply a drop shadow
Dave as Illustrator EPS - during save, set Overprint to "Preserve"
Once saved, you get the dreaded white box behind the drop shadow.
Is there any way to preserve transparency in Illustrator CS4 when applying a drop shadow?

First why are you using eps which does not support transparency except as one bit?
Why not as ai or pdf?
But you can try to use a tiff preview and select transparent there but Macintosh preview should make it so automatially.
here is the difference the top is the eps and the bottom .ai

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to add a drop shadow to an entire artboard and overlay both artboards over a background. Is there a way to do this in illustrator? • Drop Shadow Turns Bluey/Grey When Flatten Transparency is Applied

    Hello,
I'm a bit new to Illustrator (using CS2) and using it to create a CD artwork layout. I understand that i need to flatten the transparency and the artwork before generating a PDF to send to the printer.
When I choose "Flatten transparency" to flatten an a TIF image w/ a drop shadow (DS applied in Illustrator using Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow)... the shadow turns a bluey grey and looks awful. How can I make it stay black like I want it?
The settings for the drop shadow are:
    Mode: Multiply
    Opacity: 55%
    X Offset: 0.03
    Y Offset: 0.03
    Blur: 0.05
Color: 60/40/40/100 (rich black for the printing co I am using)
If anyone can clue me in as to why the color is going mushy, I'd sure apprecaite it.
    Thanks!

Well, this is preliminary, but here goes.
First, the bad news: What you're observing is real and repeatable. Transparency is a voodoo area, and it will take a real expert to explain the whys of what's happening. But it
    is happening.
Take an egdemost polaroid and, via the appearance palette, change the drop shadow so that it has a huge offset, giving you a shadow block distinct from the main image. Pull the object sufficiently off the background so that half of the shadow is in the clear. Now, dial up the flatten transparency dialog and toggle the preview. You'll see that while the portion of the shadow in the no-background area remains unchanged, the portion within your background goes light and bluish. The flattening is clearly "reacting" to your background.
I thought the same thing as jcates and tried a black-plate-only (0/0/0/100) drop shadow. While the result is a tad different, we still have the basic problem.
    Ugh.
Next, a question: Who told you transparent objects needed to be flattened before generating a press output PDF?
One of the advantages of saving out a PDF (rather than
printing to PDF via Acrobat's Distiller engine) is to preserve transparency, which is supported in the newest PDF versions. I don't want to suggest your printing company might be a tad behind the times, but one option you might consider is leaving the drop shadows as they are. Let the printer deal with transparency issues... which should not be an issue at all if they are up to handling the latest PDF spec. Of course, you will insist on a contract proof before going to press.
Next thought: For the small amount of shadow showing, there isn't really that much advantage to using a rich black. You might consider going black-plate-only to avoid tinting issues. Again, the contract proof is your friend.
Final (for now) thought: Do the drop shadows in Photoshop. Make sure there is no background and save as PSD. Place the PSD in Illustrator -- AI will respect the transparency in the PSD image. Yes, this is a PITA when it comes time to adjust the drop shadow. Being an old-timer with this stuff, that is how
I would execute this design. (We geezers don't trust Illustrator with raster effects.)
I have to go dinner shopping now to avoid getting into trouble with my wife, but I will look at this some more when I get the chance. In the meantime, let's hope someone else looking at this comes up with an "Aha!" solution.
    {Bumped in the meantime.}

  • Connections dropped, DNS and server timeouts from new Lenovo with 802.11n

New Airport Extreme, works great with Windows XP machine ethernetted into it, and also with a MacBook with wireless-N.
But my brand new Lenovo T60P with wireless-N is flakey with the Airport. It connects fine with a 100% signal, using the WPA2-PSK / AES setting on the Lenovo (WPA2 Personal security in 802.11n b/g compatibility mode on the Airport). Most of the time it works quite well.
But very frequently (every five minutes?) one of two things will happen: with the signal still registering fine in the taskbar (and in the laptop's wireless "status" utility), it will become unable to locate any website, including google.com, etc., and refreshes of currently-displayed websites yield server timeouts. The browser (firefox) gives a DNS timeout message. The second thing is just your basic dropped wireless connection. It will reconnect by itself after a while.
Any advice is hugely appreciated. It ***** to "upgrade" to headaches! (Ha! the forum software doesn't like a synonym for "vaccuums". Apologies to the nuns at Apple for my potty mouth.)

What you experienced is not a surprise as 802.11n is not a standard yet and each manufacturer has developed it own "pre-n" version. Right now Apple (base station) will work with Apple (notebooks), Dlink (routers) will work with Dlink (PCMCIA cards), etc.
Lenovo is no different. You can expect 80-90% compatibility, but not 100%. To expect cross-vendor 100% compatibility, you will likely have to wait until 802.11n is "approved" and then the firmware is updated on all devices.
