Live Migration between two WS2012 R2 Clusters with SCVMM 2012 R2 creates multiple objects on Cluster

Hi,
I'm seeing an issue when migrating VM's between two 2012 R2 Hyper-V Clusters, using VMM 2012 R2, that have their Storage provided by a 4 Node Scale Out File Server Cluster that the two clusters share.
A migration between the two clusters is successful and the VM is operation but I'm left with two roles added to the cluster the VM has moved to instead of the expected one.
For example: Say I have a VM that was created on cluster A with SCVMM, resulting in a name of : "SCVMM Test-01 Resources"
I then do a live migration to Cluster B which has access to the same storage and then I end up with two new roles instead of one.
"SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" and "abw-app-fl-01"
The "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" is left in an unknown state and "abw-app-fl-01" is operational.
I can safely delete "SCVMM abw-app-fl-01 Resources" and everything still works but it looks like something is failing during the process.
Has anyone else seen this?
I'll probably have one of my guys open a support ticket in the new year but was wondering if anyone else is seeing this.
Kind regards,
Jas :)

In my case the VMs where created in VMM in my one and only Hyper-V cluster (that's been created and is managed by VMM).
All Higly Available VM:s have a FCM role named "SCVMM vmname" where vmname is the name if the VM in VMM. On top of that a lot
of VM:s, but not all,  have a second role name named vmname. Lots of name in that sentence.
All VMs that have duplicates are using the role named vmname.
I thought it had to do with whether a VM had been migrated so I took one that never had been migrated and did. It did not get a duplicate.
Is there any progress on this?

SCVMM has a feature called Dynamic Optimization.
Dynamic Optimization can be configured on a host group, to migrate virtual machines within host clusters with a specified frequency and aggressiveness. Aggressiveness determines the amount of load imbalance that is required to initiate a migration during
Dynamic Optimization. By default, virtual machines are migrated every 10 minutes with medium aggressiveness. When configuring frequency and aggressiveness for Dynamic Optimization, an administrator should factor in the resource cost of additional migrations
against the advantages of balancing load among hosts in a host cluster. By default, a host group inherits Dynamic Optimization settings from its parent host group.
Dynamic Optimization can be set up for clusters with two or more nodes. If a host group contains stand-alone hosts or host clusters that do not support live migration, Dynamic Optimization is not performed on those hosts. Any hosts that are in maintenance
mode also are excluded from Dynamic Optimization. In addition, VMM only migrates highly available virtual machines that use shared storage. If a host cluster contains virtual machines that are not highly available, those virtual machines are not migrated during
    Dynamic Optimization.

  • Deploy VMs with SCVMM 2012 R2 with Internet connection

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to use SCVMM 2012 R2 to create a network that will eventually hold 2 clouds, but for the moment I can't seem to create the network and connect the VMs to the Internet.
My lab is this (all hosts are in a LAN, 192.168.0.0/24, gateway 192.168.0.1, and ONLY ONE NIC per HOST ):
1 host DC, DNS, SQL, SCVMM 2012 R2 (IP 192.168.0.8)
    2 hosts with Hyper-V (IP 192.168.0.9 and 192.168.0.10)
I'm also planning to create some "virtual" networks for clustering and live migration, which will use the same physical NICs as the management network (since I have only one physical NIC per host).
Could you please give me a quick guide of how to set this up with SCVMM 2012 R2, so that I can take advantage of the new features (network virtualization, logical networks, logical switch) and for the VMs to be able to reach the Internet?!
    Thank you so much.

    Thanks for the reply.
My network architecture is exactly like the one described on your paper, with 2 differences:
    1. I only have one host in the Production group and one host in the Gateway group
    2. The first host has one physical NIC, the second host has 2 NICs, one internal and one with an Internet (routable) IP
After applying the logical switches on the hosts, I lost Internet connectivity on the gateway host (I have no idea why there is no logical Gateway Switch !!!). VMM completed the jobs with no error.
    Any thoughts?

  • Isolated Lab on Hyper-V (Prod) with SCVMM 2012 R2

    Hello,
I currently would like to make littla test lab on my Hyper-V 2012 R2 with SCVMM 2012 R2 at work.
Knowing that there is DC in prod on this Hyper-V, I would like to isolate the lab from the prod without loosing internet access.
I did try with a server gateway but no connectivity and a lot of errors.
It is so easy to do witout VMM that I can't understand why it is so difficult now.
    Please let me know.
    Ollie

You should create a new virtual switch of the type "internal" where the VMs can communicate with the hosts through this switch, and vice versa. Then it will be isolated from the production DC.

  • Migration between two environments which can't communicate with each other

My customer is intending to do migration from test environment to production environment using CCM.
But the two environments are not in the same network.
The environments' setting is as blew.
BO TEST Repository can communicate with Web BO Server.
BO PRODUCTION Repository (Cluster environment) can communicate with Web BO Server.
BO TEST Repository and BO PRODUCTION Repository (Cluster environment) are in the different network, they can't communicate with each other.
Setting Target Repository manually in CCM.
    Questions are:
    1. In CCM, as long as both Source Repository and Target Repository can communicate with Web BO Server, the migration will be successful.
       Is that right?
    2. If 1 is not right, is there additional setting should I do?
For example, If I need to open some firewall port?

    Yes that is correct

You have another option which is to use the BIAR files. Export your objects to a BIAR file in source environment, and import them from BIAR into the target environment
    3. Is there other attentions should I notice?
when using BIAR files as solution, Make sure that you keep them < 1GB size to avoid corruption
you may have to increase or adjust timeouts on input and output repository servers as well

  • Hyper-v Live Migration not completing when using VM with large RAM

    hi,
i have a two node server 2012 R2 cluster hyper-v which uses 100GB CSV, and 128GB RAM across 2 physical CPU's (approx 7.1GB used when the VM is not booted), and 1 VM running windows 7 which has 64GB RAM assigned, the VHD size is around 21GB and the BIN file
is 64GB (by the way do we have to have that, can we get rid of the BIN file?).
NUMA is enabled on both servers, when I attempt to live migrate i get event 1155 in the cluster events, the LM starts and gets into 60 something % but then fails. the event details are "The pending move for the role 'New Virtual Machine' did not complete."
however, when i lower the amount of RAM assigned to the VM to around 56GB (56+7 = 63GB) the LM seems to work, any amount of RAM below this allows LM to succeed, but it seems if the total used RAM from the physical server (including that used for the
VMs) is 64GB or above, the LM fails.... coincidence since the server has 64GB per CPU.....
    why would this be?
    many thanks
    Steve

    Hi,
I turned NUMA spanning off on both servers in the cluster - I assigned 62 GB, 64GB and 88GB and each time the VM started up no problems. with 62GB LM completed, but I cant get LM to complete with 64GB+.
my server is a HP DL380 G8, it has the latest BIOS (I just updated it today as it was a couple of months behind), i cant see any settings in BIOS relating to NUMA so i'm guessing it is enabled and cant be changed.
    if i run the cmdlt as admin I get ProcessorsAvailability : {0, 0, 0, 0...}
if i run it as standard user i get ProcessorsAvailability
my memory and CPU config are as follows, hyper-threading is enabled for the CPU but I dont
think that would make a difference?

  • Coherence clustering between two separate wka clusters

    Hi,
I am running Coherence 3.6 in my environment.Off lately I am seeing a weird issue with respect to two separate wka clusters. when I mean separate wka cluster, these are two clusters configured with a distinct wka list.
I try to connect with Coherence cmd line tool to a cluster named "cluster-ABC" which has a wka IP- 10.30.xx.xxx on "host x". Then I come out of this cluster, and connect from the same command prompt window to another host -"host y" which has a same named cluster-"cluster-ABC" but a different wka IP-10.30.yy.yyy. Between the two clusters, the only common factor is the cluster name. Other things such as wka list etc are different.
After some time, I see that nodes from "host y" start joining "host x". this seems to happen only when i connect to two different clusters, from my command line utility. The clusters here are formed using wka in each case. there is no multicast enabled on our setups. This used to never happen with coherence 3.5, where i did similar kind of operations on the cluster.
Is there some kind of reference being held by the utility even after it is disconnected from the second cluster?
    Thanks,
    Chandini

We tried out your suggestion on using unique cluster names. I had 2 hosts each running a cluster with a unique cluster name; cluster-A and cluster-B. I had another node on a third host connect to cluster-A using port 8092 and then tried connecting to the cluster-B after changing the cluster name appropriately. But, this time the node was rejected by cluster-A saying that the configurations are different.
On changing the port from 8092 to 8090 and connecting to cluster-B worked just fine. I guess, just having unique cluster names isn't helping. Would this be fixed by the ticket that's been raised?
Is there anything else we could do in the interim to get around the issue? Using different ports might not be a very helpful solution as we've noticed that 3.6 onwards, we need to open up the ports in the firewall of the host where the nodes are running. This wouldn't be too feasible for us.

  • Two-way forest trust between two (single domain) forests with multiple identical user ID's

Domain and forest levels - Windows 2003 (they both have one 2008 R2 DC)
We need to create a two-way forest trust between two separate single-domain forests. The problem is that these two forests already access each others resources through a S2S. Users have the same login names and passwords on both forests/domains. Now, we
are combining their infrastructures and need to set up a trust. From what I'm reading, you can't create forest trusts if you have the same SIDs, user ID's, or computer name in each of the forests.
I'm looking into AD migration tool to copy the userSIDs (SID history?) between forest/domain, deleting the user ID's in the domain we migrated from, and then setting up the trust, but I'm leery about doing it this way as there is no easy 'recovery' should
    something go wrong.
Any suggestions for the easiest way to setup this forest trust?

    Hi,
To eliminate your worries, two user accounts have the same user name doesn’t mean that they have the same SID. Moreover, the user’s SID remains the same even after it has been renamed.
The SID for domain account/group consists of a
Domain Identifier and a Relative Identifier. Domain Identifier is unique in every domain within a forest, and a Relative Identifier is unique within domain. It is unlikely that two user accounts with or without the same account
name from two forests have the same SID.
The Technet article you mentioned is talking about duplicate SIDs instead of “duplicate computer name or user account”, I will submit a change request to Microsoft about this.
If there are duplicate SIDs when you create forest trust, you need to delete one of them as the article guides.

  • Live Migration between AD Forests

    Hello Everyone.
I would like to LiveMigrate a VM from HostA in AD Forest1 to HostB in AD Forest2.  There is a two-way trust established between the two AD Forests.  Does anyone know if this is possible?  I have not been successful.

OK! Managed to get this working!! Changed a million things so not sure what actually resolved it.
Created secondary DNS zones of the other forest on each DC for each side of the trust
Opened up firewall rules quite relaxed, each Hyper-V server can talk to all the DCs in the other forest
On source/dest Hyper-V box added the other domain administrator + computer object to local administrators group.
Added DNS search suffixes for the other forest
Hosts file was needed as well to resolve destHyperVhost.remoteforest.fqdn for some reason (netbios name would resolve).
Had to tweak name suffix routing on the trusts. This is specific to our environment (couldn't auth properly without).
Ticked "The other domain supports Kebreros AES Encryption" on the trust settings.
Configured Kerberos delegation on each Hyper-V box. "Trust this computer for delegation (Kerberos only).
Logged in to both Hyper-V boxes as sourceforest\domainadmin, double check can query WMI (e.g Get-WMIObject -Namespace "root\virtualization\v2" -class Msvm_StorageAllocationSettingData -ComputerName theotherhost).
Confirmed all SPNs etc configured properly (they were, no changed needed).
Then it works fine. In this case, it was a standalone Windows Server 2012 host, to a clustered Windows Server 2012 R2 host (but not to a CSV).

  • Mailbox migration between two Exchange 2013 servers is horribly slow

    Hi,
when migrating mailbox between 2 exchange 2013 servers,it s horribly slow. I have found some articles which describing problems about content indexing and missing AD group. This is not my problem, I have tried solutions but it didn't work. Both exchange
are next to each one, same VLAN, same switch. Just migrating between databases.
When I start batch jobs it is migrating only 1 mailbox at once and speed is really slow (2000 - 3000 mail items per 5 minutes). So mailboxes which have 10GB it's migrating 3 hours. My server is on 1gbps LAN.
I have also checked MsExchangeMailboxReplication.exe.config on both servers:
        MaxActiveMovesPerSourceMDB="20"
        MaxActiveMovesPerTargetMDB="20"
        MaxActiveMovesPerSourceServer="100"
        MaxActiveMovesPerTargetServer="100"
        MaxTotalRequestsPerMRS="100"
Do you have any idea where to look why only 1 mailbox is migrating at once?
    Thanks

    Hello,
For the reason why only 1 mailbox is migrating at once when you start batch jobs, there is no official articles or blog to explain it.
I recommend you check if the speed is slower when you move a smaller mailbox. If the issue doesn't occur, I recommend you set
    the AllowLargeItems parameter.

  • Assign management ip address with SCVMM 2012 R2 for hyper-v converged network?

    Hi,
I am setting up a converged network for our Hyper-V clusters using vNICs for the different network traffic including management, live migration, cluster-csv, hyper-v etc.
Problem is, how do I assign the hyper-v hosts a management IP address? They need a network connection on the management network for scvmm to manage them in the first place. How do I take the existing management IP address that is directly assigned to the
host and transfer it directly to the new vNIC so scvmm has management of it? Kind of in a chicken and egg situation here. I thought about assigning a temp ip address to the host initially but am worried that assigning the address will cause problems as then
the host would then have 2 default gateways configured. How have others managed this scenario?
    Thanks

Rule of thumb: Use one connected network for your Fabric networks (read the whitepaper), and use VLAN based networks for your tenant VMs when you want to associate VM Networks with each VLAN.
    -kn
Kristian (Virtualization and some coffee: http://kristiannese.blogspot.com )
We don't have tenants as such due to this being an environment on a private company LAN for sole use of the company virtual machines.
    What I have so far:
I created "one connected network" for Hyper-V-Virtual-Machine traffic.
Unchecked "Allow new VM networks created on this logical switch to use network virtualization"
Checked "Create a VM network with the same name to allow vms to access this logical network directly"
This logical network has one site called UK.
Within this site I have defined all of the different VLANS for this site.
Created IP pools for each VLAN subnet range.
I hope I understand this correctly. Started reading the whitepaper from cover to cover now.

  • Unattend.xml parsing/merging issue with SCVMM 2012 R2

    Hi all
I have a problem with a new install of SCVMM 2012 R2. I have created templates for 2008 R2, 2012 and 2012 R2. I have an issue with the unattend.xml losing some of its configuration when the 2012 and 2012 R2 templates are built, this issue however doesn't
    occur on a 2008 R2 template build.
I have generated unattend.xml files for all 3 OS's using System Image Manager in the latest AIK using the original install.wim from each OS media.
In the unattend.xml file I have specified language settings, and a few other bits but the issue I have is when I configure autologon with local admin and password. I specify a logon count of 1, I also specify a GUIRunOnce command in SCVMM and not the answerfile.
The problem is the resulting merged unattend.xml has a logon count of 999 and no GUIRunOnce command. I have tried different variations where I specify GUIRunOnce in the xml and not SCVMM, applying the autologon to the Template or Guest OS profile and
all end with the resulting xml with logon count of 999 and no GUIRunOnce. If I remove the autologon part then GUIRunOnce gets parsed and works correctly.
As mentioned this only happens with Server 2012 and 2012 R2, 2008 R2 works correctly.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Kevin
I am struggling with the same thing during bare metal installs of Hyper-V hosts. In my case I have managed to narrow it down to the language settings in the oobe pass. If I include them, parsing of the unattend file halts (without an explicit error anywhere)
and the host fails to join the domain. Could you try to leave out the language settings in oobe pass and see if it then completes as expected? Would be interesting to see if it actually is the same issue with a slightly different flavour :)
EDIT: Got a bit further now with the new release of WS2012 R2. All the testing I've done has been with the 05182 build. Stumbled across KB2913316 which stated that a new build (31419) was released december 11th. Allthough the KB does not directly apply to our
issue I thought I'd give it a go, so I went about building a new vhdx-image. Low and behold - the first test went smoothly applying all the settings in the unattend file! I'm going to continue testing to make sure the successful run wasn't just a fluke.
